Abstract
Long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are recommended as beneficial dietary supplements for enhancing cognitive function. Although fish oil (FO) is renowned for its abundant n-3 PUFA content, combining FO with other natural products is considered as a viable option to support the sustainable development of FO products. This review aims to provide comprehensive insights into the advanced effects of combining FO or its components of DHA and EPA with natural products on protecting cognitive function. In two double-blind random control trials, no advanced effects were observed for adding curcumin to FO on cerebral function protection. However, 16 week's treatment of FO combined with vitamin E did not yield any advanced effects in cognitive factor scores. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that combinations of FO with natural products can exhibit advanced effects in addressing pathological components in cognitive impairment, including neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and neuronal survival. In conclusion, evidence from clinical trials for beneficial use of FO and natural ingredients combination is lacking. Greater cohesion is needed between preclinical and clinical data to substantiate the efficacy of FO and natural product combinations in preventing or slowing the progression of cognitive decline.

Abstract
Many eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and cataracts are preventable and treatable with lifestyle. The objective of this review is to assess the most recent research on the ideal dietary approach to prevent or support the treatment of DR, AMD, and cataracts, as well as to construct a food pyramid that makes it simple for people who are at risk of developing these pathologies to decide what to eat. The food pyramid presented here proposes what should be consumed every day: 3 portions of low glycemic index (GI) grains (for fiber and zinc content), 5 portions (each portion: ≥200 g/day) of fruits and vegetables (spinach, broccoli, zucchini cooked, green leafy vegetables, orange, kiwi, grapefruit for folic acid, vitamin C, and lutein/zeaxanthin content, at least ≥42 μg/day, are to be preferred), extra virgin olive (EVO) oil (almost 20 mg/day for vitamin E and polyphenols content), nuts or oil seeds (20-30 g/day, for zinc content, at least ≥15.8 mg/day); weekly: fish (4 portions, for omega-3 content and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) 0.35-1.4 g/day), white meat (3 portions for vitamin B12 content), legumes (2 portions for vegetal proteins), eggs (2 portions for lutein/zeaxanthin content), light cheeses (2 portions for vitamin B6 content), and almost 3-4 times/week microgreen and spices (saffron and curcumin). At the top of the pyramid, there are two pennants: one green, which indicates the need for personalized supplementation (if daily requirements cannot be met through diet, omega-3, and L-methylfolate supplementation), and one red, which indicates that certain foods are prohibited (salt and sugar). Finally, 3-4 times per week, 30-40 min of aerobic and resistance exercises are required.

Abstract
The term “neural plasticity” was first used to describe non-pathological changes in neuronal structure. Today, it is generally accepted that the brain is a dynamic system whose morphology and function is influenced by a variety of factors including stress, diet, and exercise. Neural plasticity involves learning and memory, the synthesis of new neurons, the repair of damaged connections, and several other compensatory mechanisms. It is altered in neurodegenerative disorders and following damage to the central or peripheral nervous system. Understanding the mechanisms that regulate neural plasticity in both healthy and diseased states is of significant importance to promote cognition and develop rehabilitation techniques for functional recovery after injury. In this minireview, we will discuss the mechanisms by which environmental factors promote neural plasticity with a focus on exercise- and diet-induced factors. We will highlight the known circulatory factors that are released in response to exercise and discuss how all factors activate pathways that converge in part on the activation of BDNF signaling. We propose to harness the therapeutic potential of exercise by using BDNF as a biomarker to identify novel endogenous factors that promote neural plasticity. We also discuss the importance of combining exercise factors with dietary factors to develop a lifestyle pill for patients afflicted by CNS disorders.

Abstract
At present, it is a trend to use dietary supplements to prevent age-related cognitive impairment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a dietary supplement enriched with micronutrients, phosphatidylserine, and docosahexaenoic acid on cognitive performance using a D-galactose (D-gal) induced aging rat model. Seven-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups, including the control group, D-gal model group, and low-dose (2 g/kg body weight), medium-dose (6 g/kg body weight), and high-dose (10 g/kg body weight) dietary supplement intervention groups, which were investigated for 13 weeks. The dietary supplement intervention was found to improve cognitive performance in Morris water maze test, increase superoxidase dismutase activity, reduce malondialdehyde activity, decrease tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 concentrations, inhibit the activation of astrocytes, and elevate brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein and mRNA expression in the brains of D-gal-induced aged rats. This dietary supplement customized for the aged can be applied to the restoration of cognitive performance by enhancing antioxidant and anti-neuroinflammatory abilities, up-regulating neurotrophic factors, and inhibiting the activation of astrocytes. These results will be useful for future studies focused on implementation in humans.

Abstract
Our understanding of brain biology and function is one of the least characterized and therefore, there are no effective treatments for most of neurological disorders. The influence of vitamins, and particularly vitamin B12, in neurodegenerative disease is demonstrated but largely unresolved. Behaviors are often quantified to attest brain dysfunction alone or in parallel with neuro-imaging to identify regions involved. Nevertheless, attention should be paid to extending observations made in animal models to humans, since, first, behavioral tests have to be adjusted in each model to address the initial question and second, because brain analysis should not be conducted for a whole organ but rather to specific sub-structures to better define function. Indeed, cognitive functions such as psychiatric disorders and learning and memory are often cited as the most impacted by a vitamin B12 deficiency. In addition, differential dysfunctions and mechanisms could be defined according sub-populations and ages. Vitamin B12 enters the cell bound to Transcobalamin, through the Transcobalamin Receptor and serves in two cell compartments, the lipid metabolism in the mitochondrion and the one-carbon metabolism involved in methylation reactions. Dysfunctions in these mechanisms can lead to two majors outcomes; axons demyelinisation and upregulation of cellular stress involving mislocalization of RNA binding proteins such as the ELAVL1/HuR or the dysregulation of pro- or anti-oxidant NUDT15, TXNRD1, VPO1 and ROC genes. Finally, it appears that apart from developmental problems that have to be identified and treated as early as possible, other therapeutic approaches for behavioral dysfunctions should investigate cellular methylation, oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress and mitochondrial function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neurotrophins are known to influence the development and maturation of the feto-placental unit and affect fetal growth trajectories. This study reports the levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived growth factor (BDNF) in the placenta of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS A total number of 60 women with GDM and 70 women without GDM (non-GDM) were included in the study. Placental NGF and BDNF levels were measured using commercially available ELISA kits. RESULTS Placental NGF levels were lower (p < .05) in women with GDM compared to non-GDM women. Maternal body mass index (BMI), mode of delivery, and the gender of the baby influenced the placental NGF levels. Placental BDNF levels were similar in GDM and non-GDM women. There was an influence of baby gender on the placental BDNF levels while maternal BMI and mode of delivery did not show any effect. In regression models adjusted for maternal age at delivery, gestational age, maternal BMI, mode of delivery, and baby gender, the placental NGF levels in the GDM group were lower (-0.144 pg/ml [95% CI -0.273, 22120.016] p = .028) as compared to the non-GDM group. However, there was no difference in the BDNF levels between the groups. CONCLUSION This study for the first time demonstrates differential effects on neurotrophic factors such as BDNF and NGF in the placenta in pregnancies complicated by GDM. Alterations in the levels of placental neurotrophins in GDM deliveries may affect placental development and fetal brain growth. This has implications for increased risk for neurodevelopmental pathologies in later life.

Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a form of microangiopathy. Reducing oxidative stress in the mitochondria and cell membranes decreases ischemic injury and end-organ damage to the retina. New approaches are needed, which reduce the risk and improve the outcomes of DR while complementing current therapeutic approaches. Homocysteine (Hcy) elevation and oxidative stress are potential therapeutic targets in DR. Common genetic polymorphisms such as those of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), increase Hcy and DR risk and severity. Patients with DR have high incidences of deficiencies of crucial vitamins, minerals, and related compounds, which also lead to elevation of Hcy and oxidative stress. Addressing the effects of the MTHFR polymorphism and addressing comorbid deficiencies and insufficiencies reduce the impact and severity of the disease. This approach provides safe and simple strategies that support conventional care and improve outcomes. Suboptimal vitamin co-factor availability also impairs the release of neurotrophic and neuroprotective growth factors. Collectively, this accounts for variability in presentation and response of DR to conventional therapy. Fortunately, there are straightforward recommendations for addressing these issues and supporting traditional treatment plans. We have reviewed the literature for nutritional interventions that support conventional therapies to reduce disease risk and severity. Optimal combinations of vitamins B1, B2, B6, L-methylfolate, methylcobalamin (B12), C, D, natural vitamin E complex, lutein, zeaxanthin, alpha-lipoic acid, and n-acetylcysteine are identified for protecting the retina and choroid. Certain medical foods have been successfully used as therapy for retinopathy. Recommendations based on this review and our clinical experience are developed for clinicians to use to support conventional therapy for DR. DR from both type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have similar retinal findings and responses to nutritional therapies.

Abstract
A new series of alginate/chitosan-based nanocomposite microspheres was developed to achieve the maximum health benefit and to minimize the oxidation of omega-3 rich oils (flaxseed or fish oils). The nanocomposite microspheres incorporate curcumin (Cur) as natural antioxidant, and have been prepared using a three-step procedure (oil-in-water (o/w) emulsification, gelation and microencapsulation). The average particle size of Cur-free and Cur-loaded nanocomposites ranged between 139 and 153 nm. The presence of omega-3 rich oils in core of the formulated microspheres was confirmed by XRD and FTIR. Optical microscopy, stereo microscopy, SEM and AFM showed a spherical shape of the microspheres. Microencapsulation efficiency, oxidative stability, release profile of oils as well as the antioxidant and antibacterial activities were investigated. The results suggested that the microspheres could be applied as effective and safe edible vehicles for hydrophobic nutraceuticals like omega-3 rich oils with broad spectrum antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Cognitive development may be influenced by maternal nutrition especially fats. Indian population is vegetarian and main source of fat is dairy. This study investigates the effect of dairy fat consumption during pregnancy in an animal model on fatty acids, brain neurotrophins (brain derived neurotrophic factor: BDNF; and nerve growth factor: NGF) and cognitive performance in adult offspring. Pregnant Wistar rats were assigned to control (Control C) and four treatment groups: High fat diet (HFD); High fat diet supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids (HFDO); High fat diet deficient in vitamin B12 (HFBD); High fat deficient in vitamin B12 supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids (HFBDO). Half the dams were dissected on d20 of gestation, and the brains of their pups were collected. The remaining dams delivered on d22 of gestation and were assigned to a control diet. The cognitive performance of these adult offspring was assessed at 6 mo of age. Brain fatty acids were comparable to control in the pups at birth and offspring at 6 mo of age. The protein levels of BDNF in the pup brain at birth were lower in both the HFD (p < 0.01) and HFBD (p < 0.05) groups as compared to control. The mRNA levels of TrK B were lower (p < 0.05) in the pup brain at birth in the HFD as compared to control group. In the offspring at 6 mo of age the protein levels of BDNF and NGF in all the treatment groups were similar to that of control. However, the mRNA levels of only BDNF (p < 0.01 for both) were higher in the HFBD group as compared to both control and HFD groups. The cognitive performance of the adult offspring from various dietary groups was similar to control. In conclusion, consumption of a maternal high dairy fat diet although lowered the levels of brain BDNF in the pup at birth it does not affect the cognitive health of the adult offspring.
