A pyridine-Fe gel with an ultralow-loading Pt derivative as ORR catalyst in microbial fuel cells with long-term stability and high output voltage

Engineering the electronic structure of high performance FeCo bimetallic cathode catalysts for microbial fuel cell application in treating wastewater

The development of high-performance, strong-durability and low-cost cathode catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of great significance for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this study, a series of bimetallic catalysts were synthesized by pyrolyzing a mixture of g-C₃N₄ and Fe, Co-tannic complex with various Fe/Co atomic ratios. The initial Fe/Co atomic ratio (3.5:0.5, 3:1, 2:2, 1:3) could regulate the electronic state, which effectively promoted the intrinsic electrocatalytic ORR activity. The alloy metal particles and metal-N_x sites presented on the catalyst surface. In addition, N-doped carbon interconnected network consisting of graphene-like and bamboo-like carbon nanotube structure derived from g-C₃N₄ provided more accessible active sites. The resultant Fe₃Co₁ catalyst calcined at 700 °C (Fe₃Co₁-700) exhibited high catalytic performance in neutral electrolyte with a half-wave potential of 0.661 V, exceeding that of the commercial Pt/C (0.6 V). As expected, the single chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC) with 1 mg/cm² loading of Fe₃Co₁-700 catalyst as the cathode catalyst afforded a maximum power density of 1425 mW/m², which was 10.5% higher than commercial Pt/C catalyst with the same loading (1290 mW/m²) and comparable to the Pt/C catalyst with 2.5 times higher loading ( 1430 mW/m²). Additionally, the Fe₃Co₁-700 also displayed better long-term stability over 1100 h than the Pt/C. This work provides an effective strategy for regulating the surface electronic state in the bimetallic electro-catalyst.

Enhanced performance of microbial fuel cells using Ag nanoparticles modified Co, N co-doped carbon nanosheets as bifunctional cathode catalyst

The slow kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the formation of biofilm on cathode severely limited the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). An efficient way to enhance the power-generation capacity and long-term stability of MFCs is to develop bifunctional catalyst by incorporating the efficient ORR catalysts with antibacterial ingredient. In this study, the Ag/Co-N-C nanosheets were designed and synthesized by decorating Ag nanoparticles (NPs) onto Co-N-C nanosheets, which were prepared from Zn/Co bimetallic metal-organic framework (ZIF-67/ZIF-8) precursor. The Zn/Co ratio, Ag doping amount and the calcination temperature of the precursor were systematically investigated. The optimum sample Ag/Co-N-C-30 revealed the excellent ORR performance with a half-wave potential of 0.80 V vs. RHE, which was slightly lower than that of Pt/C (0.82 V vs. RHE). The MFCs equipped with Ag/Co-N-C-30 cathode exhibited maximum power density of 548 ± 12.6 mW m^-2 and superior durability even after 1600 h operation. Besides, the selective antimicrobial ability of Ag/Co-N-C-30 was further explored and the aerobic bacteria in cathode biofilm was found to be obviously inhibited by Ag/Co-N-C-30. The results suggested the Ag/Co-N-C nanosheets can serve as a promising cathode catalyst for practical applications of MFCs.

Novel chitosan based smart cathode electrocatalysts for high power generation in plant based-sediment microbial fuel cells

Smart electrocatalysts are synthesized from chitosan polymer and magnetic particles to enhance power by plant based sediment microbial fuel cell (P-SMFC). Cross-linked procedure is performed gelatinous microspheres as supporting metals (Cu, Pd, Mn, Pt, and Ni) and magnetic particles which create a porous structure on smart catalysts for increase ORR activity. A high and quick OCV rising is achieved with addition of Mag-Pd-Ch in reactor, and OCV value immediately increase from 0.408 V to 0.819 V within 10 minutes. The highest power density is also obtained as 1298 mW m^-2 for reactor with Mag-Pd-Ch, which was 15 times higher than control. Significant metal leaching is observed using plant growth for smart catalyst containing Cu. Consequently, high power production, good stabilization, easy separation from water environment due to magnetic property, and relatively low cost make use of Mag-Pd-Ch both economic and environment friendly tools to enhance power generation in P-SMFC.
