Initial mercury evaporation from experimental Ag–Sn–Cu amalgams containing Pd

Dental Metal Matrix Composites: The Effects of the Addition of Titanium Nanoparticle Particles on Dental Amalgam

Dental amalgams have been used by dentists for the restoration of posterior human teeth. However, there have been concerns about the release of mercury from amalgams into the oral cavity. The objective of the present research is to study the effect of titanium (Ti) nanoparticles on the microstructural mechanism of the release of mercury vapor in two commonly used brands of dental amalgam (the Dispersalloy: 11.8% Cu; the Sybralloy: 33% Cu). Ti powder was added to both the Dispersalloy and the Sybralloy in increments of 10 mg up to 80 mg. The addition of Ti powder to both brands of dental amalgam has been found to result in a considerable decrease in Hg vapor release. The decrease in the Hg vapor release due to Ti addition has been explained by the formation of strong Hg-Ti covalent bonds, which reduce the availability of Hg atoms for evaporation. The Ti atoms in excess of the solubility limit of Ti in Hg reside in the grain boundaries, which also reduces the evaporation of Hg from the amalgam. The binding of Hg with Ti via a strong covalent bond also results in a significant improvement in mechanical properties such as Vickers hardness.

Determination and Calculations of Mercury Vapor Concentration and Energy Released from Freshly Condensed Dental Amalgams Having Various Copper Percentages within the Alloy

Dental amalgam is an alloy consisting of a mixture of fine metallic powder of silver, tin, zinc, copper, and a trace amount of palladium in combination with about fifty percent elemental mercury that forms a matrix phase. Dental amalgams consisting of a high-copper content are the most common types of alloys currently utilized for the restoration of decayed, broken, and fractured posterior human teeth. The present research objective was primarily to improve the material properties by determining and analyzing the amount of mercury vapor released from dental amalgam received from eight different commercial brands. The mechanical hardness of the alloys was found to increase with an increase in copper content in the amalgam. The effect of copper addition on material aging was also studied. During the release of mercury vapor, the corresponding energies associated with the release of mercury vapor from each sample were determined for each successive measurement. The results indicated that increasing the copper content of the amalgam counters the release of mercury vapor from posterior teeth and improves the hardness properties.

ESEM Detection of Foreign Metallic Particles inside Ameloblastomatous Cells

Ameloblastoma is a borderline tumor of odontogenic origin, with a high recurrence rate and possible local aggressiveness. The etiopathogenetic factors involved in its occurrence are not still defined and our study has been precisely aimed to search for novel factors associated with its development. Sections cut from paraffin blocks, containing the representative specimens of 18 different ameloblastomas, collected in a 15-year period (1999-2014), have been observed by an environmental scanning electron microscope, in order to search micro- and nano-sized particles and to identify their composition. In all the neoplastic cases, micro- and nano-sized metallic debris, differing in size and composition, have been detected inside the ameloblastomatous cells. On the contrary, the total absence of metallic particles in the healthy control cases has been emerged. Our results reveal a relationship between ameloblastoma and metallic particulate. The cigarette smoke and the routine dental practice appear the most probable source for the presence of these biopersistant inorganic particles inside the neoplastic cells.

Effect of ball milling on structures and properties of dispersed-type dental amalgam

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of ball milling on the initial mercury vapor release rate and mechanical properties such as compressive strength, diametral tensile strength and creep value, of the dispersed-type dental amalgam, and comparison was made with respect to two commercial amalgam alloys.

METHODS

Ball milling was employed to modify the configuration of the originally spherical-shaped Ag-Cu-Pd dispersant alloy particles. Improvement in mechanical properties while maintaining a low early-stage mercury vapor release rate of the amalgam is attempted.

RESULTS

The experimental results show that the amalgam (AmB10) which was made from Ag-Cu-Pd dispersant alloy particles that were ball-milled for 10 min and heat-treated at 300 °C for 2 days exhibited a low initial mercury vapor release rate of 69 pg/mm(2)/s, which was comparable with that of commercial amalgam alloy Tytin (68 pg/mm(2)/s), and was lower than that of Dispersalloy (73 pg/mm(2)/s). As for mechanical properties, amalgam AmB10 exhibited the highest 1h compressive strength (228 MPa), which was higher than that of commercial amalgam alloy Dispersalloy by 72%; while its 24h diametral tensile strength was also the highest (177 MPa), and was higher than that of Dispersalloy by 55%. Furthermore, the creep value of the amalgams made from Ag-Cu-Pd alloy particles with 10 min ball-milling and heat treatment at 300 °C for 2 days was measured to be 0.12%, which was about 20% that of Dispersalloy.

SIGNIFICANCE

It is found that ball milling of the dispersant Ag-Cu-Pd alloy particles for 10 min was able to modify the configuration of the alloy particles into irregular-shapes. Subsequently, heat treatment at 300 °C significantly lowered the initial mercury vapor release rate, increased its 1h compressive strength and 1h diametral tensile strength, and lowered its creep value.
