Abstract
Molecular tags such as fluorophores are increasingly being replaced with nanoparticles thanks to their superior optical properties, substantial chemical stability, and stability against photobleaching. Herein, we innovatively constructed a new ratiometric fluorescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (RF-ELISA) for the screening of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in early hepatocellular carcinoma in vitro diagnostics using carbon dots@SiO2@CdTe quantum dots (CDs@SiO2@CdTe QDs). Carbon dots with blue fluorescence were initially encapsulated into SiO2 nanospheres through the typical Stöber method. Thereafter, CdTe QDs with red fluorescence were modified onto the surface of CDs@SiO2 nanospheres. Dual-emission nanotags with blue and red fluorescent signals were utilized to design a RF-ELISA method for the determination of AFP on the anti-AFP capture antibody-coated microplate using glucose oxidase (GOx)-labeled anti-AFP secondary antibody. After the formation of the sandwiched immunocomplex, GOx catalyzed glucose to generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which could quench the red fluorescence of CdTe QDs on the surface of nanotags. Meanwhile, the encapsulated carbon dots in the nanotags could still maintain the initial blue fluorescence intensity. The ratio between red fluorescence intensity and blue-emission intensity could be used for the quantitative monitoring of AFP concentration under optimum conditions. The experimental results indicated that CDs@SiO2@CdTe QDs-based RF-ELISA could exhibit a good fluorescence signal with a dynamic linear range of 0.05-60 ng mL-1 at a low detection limit of 8.7 pg mL-1. Moreover, the fluorescence color of the solution including CDs@SiO2@CdTe QDs changed from pink to purple to blue with the increasing AFP level when viewed by the naked eye. Good reproducibility, high specificity, and acceptable stability were achieved for the analysis of target AFP. Importantly, the accuracy of ratiometric fluorescence immunoassay was evaluated to determine human serum samples, giving well-matched results relative to commercially usable human AFP ELISA method.

Enzyme Encapsulation by Facile Self-Assembly Silica-Modified Magnetic Nanoparticles for Glucose Monitoring in Urine. Pharmaceutics 2022; 14:pharmaceutics14061154. Abstract
Silica nanoparticles hold tremendous potential for the encapsulation of enzymes. However, aqueous alcohol solutions and catalysts are prerequisites for the production of silica nanoparticles, which are too harsh for maintaining the enzyme activity. Herein, a procedure without any organic solvents and catalysts (acidic or alkaline) is developed for the synthesis of silica-encapsulated glucose-oxidase-coated magnetic nanoparticles by a facile self-assembly route, avoiding damage of the enzyme structure in the reaction system. The encapsulated enzyme was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, and a vibrating sample magnetometer. Finally, a colorimetric sensing method was developed for the detection of glucose in urine samples based on the encapsulated glucose oxidase and a hydrogen peroxide test strip. The method exhibited a good linear performance in the concentration range of 20~160 μg mL−1 and good recoveries ranging from 94.3 to 118.0%. This work proves that the self-assembly method could be employed to encapsulate glucose oxidase into silica-coated magnetic particles. The developed colorimetric sensing method shows high sensitivity, which will provide a promising tool for the detection of glucose and the monitoring of diabetes.

Strip-shaped Co 3O 4 as a peroxidase mimic in a signal-amplified impedimetric zearalenone immunoassay. Mikrochim Acta 2019; 187:75. Abstract
An impedimetric immunoassay was designed for ultrasensitive determination of zearalenone (ZEN). It is making use of the peroxidase-like activity of strip-shaped Co3O4 (ssCo3O4) which catalyzes the oxidation of 4-chloro-1-naphthol to produce an insoluble precipitate in the presence of H2O2. The precipitate is electrically nonconductive and accumulates on the electrode, thereby retarding the electron transfer from the redox probe ferro/ferricyanide to the surface of electrode. This amplifies the impedimetric signal in accordance with logarithm of the concentration of ZEN. The electrode was further modified with TiO2 mesocrystals (TiO2 MCs) which improve the capture of more analytes and increase the performance of the immunoassay. Under optimized experimental condition, the impedimetric signal increased linearly with the logarithm of the ZEN concentration range between 0.1 fg·mL-1 to 10 pg·mL-1. The detection limit is of 33 ag· mL-1. Graphical abstractThis work describes an impedimetric immunoassay based on the use of strip-shaped Co3O4 that catalyzes the production of an insoluble precipitate in the presence of H2O2 on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. The effect was used for signal amplification in an electrochemical immunoassay for zearalenone.

Polyion oligonucleotide-decorated gold nanoparticles with tunable surface charge density for amplified signal output of potentiometric immunosensor. Anal Chim Acta 2017; 964:67-73. Abstract
Methods based on nanostructures have been developed for potentiometric immunosensors, but most involve low sensitivity or weak signal output and are unsuitable for routine use in diagnosis. Herein, we devise an in-situ signal-amplification strategy for enhanced electrical readout of potentiometric immunosensor toward target prostate-specific antigen (PSA, one kind of cancer biomarkers), based on polyion oligonucleotide-labeled gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). To decrease the background signal, monoclonal anti-human PSA capture antibody was covalently conjugated onto an activated glassy carbon electrode via typical carbodiimide coupling. AuNPs heavily functionalized with the polyion oligonucleotides and polyclonal anti-PSA detection antibodies (pAb2-AuNP-DNA) were utilized as the signal-generation nanotags. In the presence of target PSA, a sandwich-type immunoreaction was executed between capture antibody and detection antibody on the electrode. The detectable signal derived from the shift in the electric potential as a result of the change in the surface charge before and after the antigen-antibody reaction. With target PSA increased, the captured pAb2-AuNP-DNA to the electrode accompanying detection antibody increased, thereby resulting in the change of the electrode potential. Due to numerous polyion oligonucleotides with the negative charge, the signal readout amplified. Under the optimal conditions, the shift in the output potential was proportional to the logarithm of target PSA concentration and displayed a dynamic linear range from 0.05 to 20 ng mL-1 with a detection limit of 13.6 pg mL-1. An intermediate precision of ≤13.2% was accomplished with the batch-to-batch identification. The selectivity was acceptable. The method accuracy was evaluated for human serum specimens, and gave the consistent results between the potentiometric immunosensor and the referenced enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Abstract
The demand for a highly sensitive and selective glucose biosensor which can be used for implantable or on-time monitoring is constantly increasing. In this work, TiO2 nanorods were synthesized in situ on the surface of graphite microfibers to yield TiO2 nanorod/graphite microfiber hybrid electrodes. The TiO2 nanorods not only retain the high activity of the immobilized glucose molecule, but also promote the direct electron transfer process on the electrode surface. As a working electrode in an electrochemical glucose biosensor in a flowing system, the microfiber hybrid electrodes exhibit high sensitivity, selectivity and stability. Due to its simplicity, low cost, high stability, and unique morphology, the TiO2 nanorod/graphite microfiber hybrid electrode is expected to be an excellent candidate for an implantable biosensor or for in situ flow monitoring.

Abstract
Simple synthesis of a ferrocene-functionalized polydopamine [poly(DA-Fc)] is described. This redox film displays excellent electrocatalytic oxidation of H2O2 in neutral buffer solutions in a Fenton-type reaction, and is found to be selective to H2O2 with negligible interference from other small molecules.

Abstract
Redox polymer nanobeads of branched polyethylenimine binding with ferrocene (BPEI-Fc) were synthesized using a simple chemical process. The functionality and morphology of the redox polymer nanobeads were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This hydrophilic redox nanomaterial could be mixed with glucose oxidase (GOx) for drop-coating on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) for glucose sensing application. Electrochemical properties of the BPEI-Fc/GOx/SPCE prepared under different conditions were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). On the basis of these CV results, the synthetic condition of the BPEI-Fc/GOx/SPCE could be optimized. By incorporating conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), the performance of a redox polymer nanobead–based enzyme electrode could be further improved. The influence of PEDOT:PSS on the nanocomposite enzyme electrode was discussed from the aspects of the apparent electron diffusion coefficient (D(app)) and the charge transfer resistance (R(ct)). The glucose-sensing sensitivity of the BPEI-Fc/PEDOT:PSS/GOx/SPCE is calculated to be 66 μA mM(–1) cm(–2), which is 2.5 times higher than that without PEDOT:PSS. The apparent Michaelis constant (K(M)(app)) of the BPEI-Fc/PEDOT:PSS/GOx/SPCE estimated by the Lineweaver–Burk plot is 2.4 mM, which is much lower than that of BPEI-Fc/GOx/SPCE (11.2 mM). This implies that the BPEI-Fc/PEDOT:PSS/GOx/SPCE can catalytically oxidize glucose in a more efficient way. The interference test was carried out by injection of glucose and three common interferences: ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) at physiological levels. The interferences of DA (4.2%) and AA (7.8%) are acceptable and the current response to UA (1.6%) is negligible, compared to the current response to glucose.

Abstract
We report noncovalent dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in organic liquids with extremely high loading (∼2 mg mL(-1)) using polyvinylferrocene (PVF). In contrast to common dispersants, PVF does not contain any conjugated structures or ionic moieties. PVF is also shown to be effective in controlling nanotube dispersion and reprecipitation because it exhibits redox-switchable affinity for solvents, while maintaining stable physical attachment to CNTs during redox transformation. This switchability provides a novel approach to creating CNT-functionalized surfaces. The material systems described here offer new opportunities for applications of CNTs in nonaqueous media, such as nanotube-polymer composites and organic liquid-based optical limiters, and expand the means of tailoring nanotube dispersion behavior via external stimuli, with potential applications in switching devices. The PVF/CNT hybrid system with enhanced redox response of ferrocene may also find applications in high-performance biosensors and pseudocapacitors.

Abstract
A novel one-dimensional hierarchically structured TiO(2) (1DHS TiO(2)) was synthesized by a solvothermal method using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a template and evaluated for the immobilization of protein and biosensing applications. Characterization studies showed that the 1DHS TiO(2) possessed an anatase crystalline structure and a large surface area with narrow pore size distribution. Fast direct electron transfer was observed for glucose oxidase (GOx) immobilized on the 1DHS TiO(2), and excellent electrocatalytic performance for glucose detection can be obtained without a mediator. The glucose sensor based on the GOx/1DHS TiO(2)-modified electrode had a high sensitivity of 9.90 μA mM(-1) cm(-2) and a low detection limit of 1.29 μM. The fabricated biosensor displayed good selectivity and long-term stability, indicating that the novel structured TiO(2) is a promising material for the immobilization of biomolecules and the fabrication of third-generation biosensors.
