Abstract
This work presents a comprehensive mechanistic study of the ligand-controlled palladium-catalyzed prenylation (with C5 added) and geranylation (with C10 added) reactions of oxindole with isoprene. The calculated results indicate that the prenylation with the bis-phosphine ligand and geranylation with the monophosphine ligand fundamentally share a common mechanism. This mechanism involves the formation of two crucial species: a η3-allyl-Pd(II) cation and an oxindole carbon anion. Furthermore, the reactions necessitate the assistance of a second oxindole molecule, which serves as a Brønsted acid, providing a proton to generate the oxindole nitrogen anion. The oxindole nitrogen anion then acts as a Brønsted base, abstracting a C-H proton from another oxindole molecule to form an oxindole carbon anion. These mechanistic details differ significantly from those proposed in the experimental work. The present calculations do not support the presence of the Pd-H species and the η3, η3-diallyl-Pd(II) intermediate, which were previously suggested in experiments. The theoretical results rationalize the experimental finding that the bis-phosphine ligand favors the prenylation of oxindole, while the monophosphine ligand enables the geranylation of oxindole.

Abstract
Seven rarely spirooxindole alkaloids, voagafricines A-G (1-7) were isolated from the stem barks of Voacanga africana. Their structures were unambiguously elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic data and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analyses. 1 and 2 possess a unique indoleone system in conjugation with a 3,4'-decahydroquinoline spiral ring originating from seco-quinolhiddin core of the precursor, furthermore 1 undergo decarburization formed a novel C-3-nor monoterpenoid indole. All isolates were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against MBLs producing Escherichia coli strains. Compounds 1 and 7 were found to be potent inhibitors against E. coli 298 and 140 by targeting biofilm. Possible interaction sites of 1 and 7 with biofilm were preliminarily explored by means of molecular docking.

Abstract
Lyonia doyonensis is a deciduous shrub native to high-altitude regions of Asia. So far, there is no report on any chemical and biological properties of L. doyonensis. An EtOH extract of L. doyonensis twigs and leaves showed inhibitory activities on protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B and lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in BV-2 microglial cells. A phytochemical investigation of this extract led to the isolation of a, so far only ambiguously described, 24-norursane-type triterpenoid, now named lyonensinol A (1: ), along with its two new derivatives, lyonensinols B and C (2: and 3: ), and six known triterpenoids (4 - 9: ). Their structures were elucidated by detailed analysis of spectroscopic data. A combination of chemical conversions, electronic circular dichroism, and Mo2(OAc)4-induced electronic circular dichroism was used to confirm their absolute configurations. Lyonensinols B (2: ) and C (3: ) represent the first examples of norursane-type triterpenoids acylated with a p-coumaroyl moiety. The potential anti-inflammatory and protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B inhibitory activities of all the isolates were evaluated. Compounds 3, 7: , and 8: at 10 µM showed potent inhibitory activities on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in BV-2 microglial cells, with nitric oxide levels decreasing to 31.5, 41.9, and 27.1%, respectively, while compounds 3, 4, 7: , and 8: exhibited notable inhibitory activities against protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B, with IC50 values ranging from 1.7 to 18.2 µM. Interestingly, compounds 3: and 8: , bearing a C-3 trans-p-coumaroyl group, showed not only more potent anti-inflammatory effects, but also exhibited stronger protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B inhibition than their respective stereoisomers (2: and 7: ) with a cis-p-coumaroyl group.

Abstract
Three undescribed triterpene glycosides syzybullosides A-C (1-3) along with fourteen known compounds were isolated from the leaves of Syzygium bullockii (Hance) Merr.& L.M. Perry, including six triterpene glycosides (1-6), four phenolics (7-9, 17), four megastigmanes (10-13), and three flavonoids (14-16). The structures of 1-17 were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, including IR, HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra. Compounds 1-10 and 12-17 inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide activated RAW264.7 cells with IC50 values ranging from 1.30 to 13.70 µM, lower than that of the positive control compound, L-NMMA (IC50 = 33.8 µM).

Abstract
Plant byproducts and waste present enormous environmental challenges and an opportunity for valorization and industrial application. Due to consumer demands for natural compounds, the evident paucity of novel antimicrobial agents against foodborne pathogens, and the urgent need to improve the arsenal against infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), plant byproduct compounds have attracted significant research interest. Emerging research highlighted their promising antimicrobial activity, yet the inhibitory mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this review summarizes the overall research on the antimicrobial activity and inhibitory mechanisms of plant byproduct compounds. A total of 315 natural antimicrobials from plant byproducts, totaling 1338 minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) (in μg/mL) against a broad spectrum of bacteria, were identified, and a particular emphasis was given to compounds with high or good antimicrobial activity (typically <100 μg/mL MIC). Moreover, the antimicrobial mechanisms, particularly against bacterial pathogens, were discussed in-depth, summarizing the latest research on using natural compounds to combat pathogenic microorganisms and AMR. Furthermore, safety concerns, relevant legislation, consumer perspective, and current gaps in the valorization of plant byproducts-derived compounds were comprehensively discussed. This comprehensive review covering up-to-date information on antimicrobial activity and mechanisms represents a powerful tool for screening and selecting the most promising plant byproduct compounds and sources for developing novel antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Two enantiomeric pairs of macrocyclic acylphloroglucinols (1a/1b and 2a/2b) with an unprecedented carbon skeleton featuring a bicyclo[12.3.1]octadecane core, together with an undescribed biogenetically related long-chain acylphloroglucinol (3), were isolated from Syzygium szemaoense. Their structures were fully established by spectroscopic method, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and ECD calculation. Compounds 1b and 2a/2b exhibited inhibition against death-associated protein kinase-related apoptosis inducing protein kinase 2 (DRAK2) and ATP citrate lyase (ACLY), respectively.

Abstract
To study the chemical constituents from the ripe fresh fruits of Syzygium samarangense (wax apple) and their potential health effects, a phytochemical investigation was undertaken. A new δ-lactone derivative, syzysamalactone (1), along with a known biogenetically related δ-lactone derivative, 6-pentyl-α-pyrone (2), were isolated from the fresh ripe fruits of S. samarangense. Syzysamalactone (1) is an unusual 11-carbon δ-lactone derivative, and its chemical structure and absolute configuration were elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis. A plausible biogenetic pathway for 1 was also proposed. Furthermore, the potential neuroprotective effects of compounds 1 and 2 were assessed. As a result, compounds 1 and 2 displayed notable neuroprotective effects with EC50 values of 0.29 ± 0.03 and 1.28 ± 0.06 μM, respectively, using the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line. This is the first report of δ-lactone derivatives showing significant neuroprotective activities.

Abstract
The chemical characteristics and hypolipidemic effects of alkylphenols in the fruit of Syzygium jambos were investigated in this study. Three cardanols (1-3; 1 as a new compound) and three alkylresorcinols (4-6) were isolated and identified from S. jambos fruit. Cardanols 1 and 2 (10-40 μM) suppressed lipids accumulation and reduced triglyceride content in oleic acid-overloaded HepG2 cells via the activation of AMPK/PPARα signaling pathways. Furthermore, the biological distribution of cardanols after an oral intake in mice was investigated. Compound 2 was detected in mice plasma, feces, and adipose tissues after a single oral intake (80 mg/kg body weight). In addition, an alkylphenols-enriched S. jambos fruit extract containing two bioactive compounds (95.9 and 198.6 μg/mg of compounds 1 and 2, respectively) was prepared. Findings from the current study highlight the potential usage of cardanols as well as S. jambos fruit for the management of dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds are the secondary metabolites (SMs) present in plants carrying different bioactivities. In the present study, we explored the influence of a phenolic compound namely phloroglucinol on oviposition behaviour and different biochemical entities of an insect pest Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae) using artificial diet. Phloroglucinol (IUPAC name: benzene-1,3,5-triol) affected the activity of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes viz. superoxide dismutases (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidases (APOX). dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), peroxidases (POX), phenol oxidase (PO), glutathione peroxidase (GPOX), glutathione S-transferase peroxidase (GSTpox), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and esterases (EST) as well as the biological antioxidants viz. ascorbate content and glutathione. The lipid peroxide content (LP) and hydrogen peroxide content (H2O2) were significantly enhanced in the treated larvae indicating oxidative stress in the insect. Significant inhibition in oviposition was observed and effective repellency percentage increased with phloroglucinol treatment as compared to control. The oviposition deterrent activity and toxic effects of phloroglucinol on various biochemical parameters of Z. cucurbitae larvae revealed in the present study clearly confirms its suitability for use in pest management.

Abstract
Blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) is a widely used botanical in the cosmeceutical and food industries. Although blue gum leaves are known for abundant essential oils, their nonvolatile phytochemical constituents and bioactivities remain unclear. Herein, a phytochemical investigation of blue gum leaves led to the identification of eight new monoterpene acid and gallic acid glucose esters (1-4 and 14-17; glubosides A-H, respectively) and 12 known analogues (5-13 and 18-20). Their structures were determined based on extensive spectroscopic data analysis, chemical degradation, and chiral separation. Oleuropeic acid conjugated glucose esters (1-13, 15, 16, 18, and 20) are reported as epimeric mixtures. Compounds 7, 12, 14, 19, and 20 (at 30 μM) inhibited nitrite release in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Compounds 7 and 14 (at 3-30 μM) also down-regulated proinflammatory biomarkers, including cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β), protein expression (iNOS and COX-2), and transcription factor nuclear translocation (NF-κB) in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. This work highlights the anti-inflammatory potential of phytochemicals from blue gum leaves, which supports their further development as cosmeceutical and/or nutraceutical products.

Abstract
Phloroglucinol (PG) is a natural product isolated from plants, algae, and microorganisms. Aside from that, the number of PG derivatives has expanded due to the discovery of their potential biological roles. Aside from its diverse biological activities, PG and its derivatives have been widely utilized to treat microbial infections caused by bacteria, fungus, and viruses. The rapid emergence of antimicrobial-resistant microbial infections necessitates the chemical synthesis of numerous PG derivatives in order to meet the growing demand for drugs. This review focuses on the use of PG and its derivatives to control microbial infection and the underlying mechanism of action. Furthermore, as future perspectives, some of the various alternative strategies, such as the use of PG and its derivatives in conjugation, nanoformulation, antibiotic combination, and encapsulation, have been thoroughly discussed. This review will enable the researcher to investigate the possible antibacterial properties of PG and its derivatives, either free or in the form of various formulations.

Abstract
Clinacanthus nutans Lindau (Family: Acanthaceae) is a medicinal herb widely distributed in the tropic and subtropic areas of Asia. C. nutans is traditionally consumed as vegetable or herbal tea, as well as a folk medicine for anticancer and antifungal activities. However, to date, chemical constituent responsible for observed health beneficial effects of this medicinal plant is not clear. In the current study, 32 compounds (1-32), including three new megastigmanes (1-3) were isolated from the aerial parts of C. nutans. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of comprehensive NMR, MS, and CD spectroscopic data analysis, as well as chemical hydrolysis. Among the isolates, cycloartane triterpenoids (9, 10, and 12) displayed moderate anti-proliferative effects against HepG2 cell growth with IC50 values ranging from 9.12 to 19.89 μM. Data obtained from flow cytometry analysis and western blotting assays revealed that compounds 9 and 12 induced apoptosis of HepG2 cells by modulating the expression of proteins associated to mitochondrial-mediated apoptotic pathway. Furthermore, megastigmanes 1, 2, 7, and 8 enhanced the anti-Candida albicans activity of amphotericin B (AmB), supporting the synergistic effects between megastigmanes and AmB. This is the first report of anticancer and antifungal potential of cycloartane triterpenoids and megastigmanes in C. nutans, which shed useful insights on the relationship between C. nutans's chemical constituent and its beneficial effects to health. Findings from this study support further development of this medicinal plant for potential pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
Nine undescribed acylphloroglucinol derivatives, oblatones A-I, along with three known ones, were isolated from Syzygium oblatum. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, including NMR and MS data interpretation. Oblatones A and B possess an alkylated chromanone scaffold featuring a hemiketal moiety. Oblatones C and D are the first acylphloroglucinol derivatives with an α,β-unsaturated ketone lipid chain. Some of the isolates showed inhibitory effects on ATP citrate lyase in vitro. The binding mode of oblatone A was predicted by molecular docking.
