Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are poorly-coordinated ionic salts that can exist as a liquid at room temperatures (or <100 °C). ILs are also referred to as "designer solvents" because so many of them have been created to solve particular synthetic issues. ILs are regarded as "green solvents" because they have several distinctive qualities, including better ionic conduction, recyclability, improved solvation ability, low volatility, and thermal stability. These have been at the forefront of the most innovative fields of science and technology during the past few years. ILs may be employed in new drug formulation development and drug design in the field of pharmacy for various functions such as improvement of solubility, targeted drug delivery, stabilizer, permeability enhancer, or improvement of bioavailability in the development of pharmaceutical or vaccine dosage formulations. Ionic liquids have become a key component in various areas such as synthetic and catalytic chemistry, extraction, analytics, biotechnology, etc., due to their superior abilities along with highly modifiable potential. This study concentrates on the usage of ILs in various pharmaceutical applications enlisting their numerous purposes from the delivery of drugs to pharmaceutical synthesis. To better comprehend cuttingedge technologies in IL-based drug delivery systems, highly focused mechanistic studies regarding the synthesis/preparation of ILs and their biocompatibility along with the ecotoxicological and biological effects need to be studied. The use of IL techniques can address key issues regarding pharmaceutical preparations such as lower solubility and bioavailability which plays a key role in the lack of effectiveness of significant commercially available drugs.

Abstract
Enzyme-catalyzed electrolysis system (EES) is a promising technique for the efficient dechlorination of pollutants. In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) was first introduced to enhance the dichloromethane dechlorination performance of an EES. An imidazole-based IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazole tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM][BF4]), was chosen due to its excellent performance on dechlorination enhancement than other three ILs. The cyclic voltammograms with different scan rates shows that the presence of IL increased the apparent electron transfer rate constant (ks) from 0.008 to 0.013 s-1. The calculated surface electroactive species concentration (τc) also increased from 7.8 × 10-9 to 9.5 × 10-9 mol cm-2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis illustrates that the IL mainly weakened the interfacial resistance between electrolyte and cathode to accelerate the electron communication in the EES. The introduction of IL facilitated the regeneration of reduced glutathione from oxidized glutathione, whereas inhibited the catalytic activity of dehalogenase via the disruption of secondary structure shown in circular dichroism spectra. The presence of IL was also facilitated the dichloromethane diffusion from electrolyte to cathode. The mass transfer rate constants of dichloromethane (km,d) increased by 6.9 times after the addition of IL. The optimum volume concentration, pH value, reaction temperature and applied voltage were 20%, 7, 35 °C and -0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl, respectively. The study is helpful to understand the promotion mechanism of IL on the dechlorination performance of EES when it is adopted as a treatment technique.

Abstract
Poly(ionic) liquid (PIL) augmented membranes were fabricated through self-polymerization of 2-vinyl pyridine and 4-vinyl pyridine followed by dopamine triggered polymerization and bridging with inert polyamide support. The resulting membranes acquired a positive surface charge with a high degree of hydrophilicity. Fourier transformed Infra-red (FTIR) and Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopic investigation revealed the successful augmentation of PIL surface layer, whereas surface morphology was investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. This manuscript demonstrates pi electron-induced separation of dyes with the trend in permeability: Coomassie Brilliant Blue G (CBBHG) > Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) > Eichrome Black T (EBT) > Congo Red (CR). CBBG exhibited extended conjugation over large aromatic domain. RBBR and EBT were associated withtheelectron-donating -NH2 group and electron-withdrawing -NO2 group, respectively, hence pi electron density on aromatic ring varied. The steric repulsion between two pairs of ortho hydrogens (Hs) in biphenyl moieties of CR resulted in deviation of planarity and hence aromaticity leading to the lowest permeability. The sugar fractionation followed the trend: Galactose > Mannose > Fructose > Glucose > Xylose. More hydroxyl (-OH) groups in sugars and their conformational alignment in the same direction, exhibited more lone pair of electrons leading to more interaction with PIL and hence better permeability. Pentose showed poorer permeation than hexose, whereas aldose showed better permeation than ketose.

Abstract
Selecting an appropriate separation technique is essential for the application of in situ product removal (ISPR) technology in biological processes. In this work, a three-stage systematic design method is proposed as a guide to integrate ionic liquid (IL)-based separation techniques into ISPR. This design method combines the selection of a suitable ISPR processing scheme, the optimal design of an IL-based liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) system followed by process simulation and evaluation. As a proof of concept, results for a conventional acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation are presented (40,000 ton/year butanol production). In this application, ILs tetradecyl(trihexyl)phosphonium tetracyanoborate ([TDPh][TCB]) and tetraoctylammonium 2-methyl-1-naphthoate ([TOA] [MNaph]) are identified as the optimal solvents from computer-aided IL design (CAILD) method and reported experimental data, respectively. The dynamic simulation results for the fermentation process show that, the productivity of IL-based in situ (fed-batch) process and in situ (batch) process is around 2.7 and 1.8fold that of base case. Additionally, the IL-based in situ (fed-batch) process and in situ (batch) process also have significant energy savings (79.6% and 77.6%) when compared to the base case.

Abstract
Despite widespread development and use of ionic liquids (ILs) in both academic and industrial research, computational force fields (FFs) for most of those are not available for a precise description of inter-species interactions in aqueous environments. In the scope of this study, by means of molecular simulations, the osmotic coefficient of an aqueous solution of an IL is calculated and used as a basis to reparameterize popular IL-FFs existing in the literature. We first calculate the osmotic coefficients (at 298.15 K and 1 atm pressure) of aqueous solutions of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl), a generic IL, popularly used in biomass processing and the subsequent conversion to value-added intermediates. The performance of two popular atomic, nonpolarizable FFs developed for BMIMCl, one by Lopes, Pádua, and coworkers (FF-LP) and the other by Sambasivarao, Acevedo, and coworkers (FF-SA), when mixed with the SPC/E water model, is tested with respect to their ability to reproduce the experimental osmotic coefficient data. Interestingly, the osmotic coefficient is found to be increasing with a gradual increase in IL molality within the concentration range of our investigation, which is contrary to the experimental trend reported in the literature for the same IL-water mixture. Henceforth, necessary corrections to the nonbonded ion-ion and ion-water interactions are made to match the experimental osmotic coefficient. To further assess the reliability of the new FF, we extensively explore the thermodynamic (density, isothermal compressibility, and thermal expansion coefficient), dynamic (diffusivity and viscosity), and association/dissociation properties (rationalized with the help of radial distribution functions) with both the original and reparameterized FF for a wider range of concentrations up to a molality of 18.50 mol kg-1. The calculated quantities are compared against experimental data wherever available. The modified FF parameters exhibit significant improvements in terms of its ability to match experimental solution properties, such as density, viscosity, association/dissociation, etc. We report that excessive dissociation of BMIMCl in water is responsible for the shortcomings observed in the original FFs and improved prediction of physicochemical properties could be achieved using the modified FFs.

Abstract
Over the years, ionic liquids (ILs) have gained tremendous importance because of their unique properties and plethora of applications. In this work, we have developed a new nanoscale hybrid gel consisting of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethyl phosphate, [C2mim][dmp], and self-assembled peptide nanoassemblies. The peptide nanoassemblies were formed by self-assembly of a newly synthesized peptide bolaamphiphile bis(N-α-amido-threonine) 1,7 heptane dicarboxylate (ThrC7). Upon mild heating and sonication of the IL and ThrC7 nanoassemblies, ThrC7-IL nanocomposites were formed. We explored the formation of nanohybrids by varying the ratio of IL to ThrC7 assemblies. While at lower IL ratios, a gelatinous matrix was formed, at higher IL ratios, highly ordered multilayered structures were observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. The interactions between the ThrC7 nanofibers and [C2mim][dmp] IL were probed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and AFM imaging. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the nanohybrids illustrated distinct thermal phase changes due to changes in hydrogen bonding interactions and unfolding of the nanoassemblies. The viscoelastic behavior of the nanohybrids indicated that the materials displayed higher storage modulus upon incorporation of the ThrC7 nanoassemblies when compared to the IL. Furthermore, the nanohybrids were found to adhere to and promote proliferation of human dermal fibroblasts, while cytotoxicity was observed toward MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Thus, for the first time, we have developed peptide-based nanohybrids with an imidazolium-based IL with unique structural properties that may open new avenues for exploring potential biological applications.

Abstract
Imidazolium-based ionic liquids (IL) with short-alkyl side chain such as 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Emim]Cl) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) has immense application potential including in lignocellulosic bioenergy production. But they are toxic to most microorganisms, and those isolated from different environments as IL-tolerant have salt tolerance capabilities. This study evaluates the relationship between salt and [Emim]Cl tolerance of microorganisms using different salinity sediments (2-19%) and brines (35%) of India's largest inland hypersaline lake, Sambhar in Rajasthan as the model system. While samples with 2% and 35% salinities do not yield any [Emim]Cl (100 mM) tolerant colonies, others have 6-50% colonies tolerant to the IL. Similar trend was observed with 50 mM [Bmim]Cl. Moderate halophilic isolates of genera Halomonas and Bacillus (growth in 0.7-3.0 M NaCl) isolated from the sediments could grow in as high as 375 mM [Emim]Cl, or 125 mM [Bmim]Cl facilitated by higher synthesis, and uptake of organic osmolytes; and up to 1.7-fold increased activity of active efflux pumps. [Bmim]Cl was more toxic than [Emim]Cl in all performed experiments. [Emim]Cl-adapted cells could trounce IL-induced stress. Interestingly, enrichment with 100 mM [Emim]Cl resulted in increase of IL-tolerant colonies in all sediments including the one with 2% salinity. However, the salt saturated brines (35%) do not yield any such colony even after repeated incubations. Extreme halophilic archaea, Natronomonas (growth in 3.0-4.0 M NaCl) isolated from such brines, were exceedingly sensitive to even 5 mM [Emim]Cl, or 1 mM [Bmim]Cl. Two additional extremophilic archaea, namely Haloferax and Haladaptatus were also sensitive to the tested ILs. Archaeal sensitivity is possibly due to the competitive interaction of [Emim]+ with their acidic proteome (15.4-17.5% aspartic and glutamic acids, against 10.7-12.9% in bacteria) that they maintain to stabilize the high amount of K+ ion accumulated by salt-in strategy. Thus, general salt adaptation strategies of moderate halophilic bacteria help them to restrain toxicity of these ILs, but extremophilic archaea are highly sensitive and demands meticulous use of these solvents to prevent environmental contamination.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted attention in recent years due to their "greener" properties compared to conventional organic solvents. However, they may still pose a risk to the environment as their toxicity is not fully understood. Bioremediation of such ILs can be an economically and environmentally friendly approach. Therefore, this study aims to examine the interaction of three ILs (1-dodecylpyridnium chloride [DPy]+Cl, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [BMIm]+Cl, and 1-Carbamoylmethyl pyridinium chloride [CMPy]+Cl) at different concentrations with an enriched ammonia oxidising bacteria (AOB) culture, and investigate their effects on the ammonia oxidation rate (AOR) as well as their removal and transformation. The results indicated that the longer chain IL [DPy]+Cl had a negative effect on the AOR while [BMIm]+Cl and [CMPy]+Cl enhanced the AOR. However, the IL removal rates displayed the opposite results as [DPy]+Cl was observed with the highest removal. It was found that biosorption played a major role in [DPy]+Cl removal. Biotransformation products for each IL were identified and their pathways were proposed. This study demonstrated that although longer chain ILs have a greater degree of removal, and they are also more toxic to AOB at higher concentration.

Abstract
Here we report a first analytical approach to determine the spectral dependence of the complex permittivity function of molecular and macromolecular ionic conductors in the interfacial layers formed by electrode polarization effects. We show that a previous model of electrode polarization effects that was successfully applied for describing the dielectric behavior of ionic liquids ( Serghei, A.; Tress, M.; Sangoro, J. R.; Kremer, F. Electrode polarization and charge transport at solid interfaces. Phys. Rev. B 2009 , 80 , 184301 ) can be now generalized and applied for polymer/ionic liquid blends as well as for poly(ionic liquid)s. The determined dielectric function of the interfacial layers reveals a dramatic change in the charge transport process manifested by a large decrease in conductivity. Our approach brings the first evidence for a relaxation peak detected in the dielectric loss of the interfaces, which is attributed to an exchange process between the interface and the bulk. This study gives new insights into the mechanism of charge transport at interfaces and could thus contribute to a better correlation between the dielectric properties of ion conducting materials and their electrochemical behavior at interfaces.

Abstract
The effective processing method to produce fermentable sugars and modify the microstructure of black soybean okara using bio-ionic liquid (bio-IL) pretreatment and ultrasound-promoted enzymatic hydrolysis was investigated. The morphology and structural characteristics of okara before and after bio-IL pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis under different ultrasonic frequencies were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Without pretreatment, the production of total reducing sugar (TRS) under ultrasound (40 kHz/300 W) was 3.4 times of that without ultrasound. Using the bio-IL choline acetate ([Ch][OAc]) in water for the pretreatment of black soybean okara, the TRS production of enzymatic hydrolysis was further increased to 5.2 times of that without ultrasound in 4 h of reaction. The analysis by FTIR and EDS showed that the highly structured matrix of okara was unfolded and broken by the action of combining ultrasound and choline acetate pretreatment, due to which the surface structures with large pores were presented to facilitate the reduction of unfavorable hindrance for enzymatic hydrolysis. The simplified kinetic model was proposed to describe the transport and reaction phenomena of enzymes in a solid-liquid system by using two kinetic parameters to show the impeded behavior of enzyme within the matrix of okara. The combination of bio-IL pretreatment and ultrasound-promoted enzymatic hydrolysis was able to make the efficient structural changes of black soybean okara to enhance the digestion of enzymes, and the okara could be valorized for use in foods.

Abstract
Microbial biosynthesis of fuels and chemicals represents a promising route for their renewable production. Product toxicity, however, represents a common challenge limiting the efficacy of this approach. Integrated bioprocesses incorporating in situ product separation are poised to help address this intrinsic problem, but suffer their own unique shortcomings. To improve and expand the utility of this versatile bioprocessing strategy, recent innovations have focused on developing more effective separation materials and novel process configurations, as well as adapting designs to accommodate semi-continuous modes of operation. As a result, integrated bioprocesses are finding new applications to aid the biosynthesis of an ever-growing list of bioproducts. Emerging applications, meanwhile, are exploring the further expansion of such designs to interface microbial and chemical catalysts, leading to new and versatile routes for the one-pot synthesis of an even greater diversity of renewable products.

Biodegradation and toxicity of emerging contaminants: Isolation of an exopolysaccharide-producing Sphingomonas sp. for ionic liquids bioremediation. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2019; 365:88-96. Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have been characterized as contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) that often resist biodegradation and impose toxicity upon environmental release. Sphingomonas sp. MKIV has been isolated as an extreme microorganism capable for biodegradation of major classes of ILs. Six imidazolium-, pyridinium- and ammonium-based ILs (pyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate [Py][CF3SO3], 1-(4-pyridyl)pyridinium chloride [1-4PPy][Cl], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide [BMIM][Br], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate [BMIM][MeSO4], tetrabutylammonium iodide [n-Bu4N][I] and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate [n-Bu4N][PF6]) were used for microbial growth. The strain achieved 91% and 87% removal efficiency for cultures supplemented with 100 mg L-1 of [BMIM][MeSO4] and [n-Bu4N][I] respectively. The metabolic activity of MKIV was inhibited following preliminary stages of cultures conducted using [BMIM][MeSO4], [BMIM][Br], [Py][CF3SO3] and [n-Bu4N][PF6], indicating potential accumulation of inhibitory metabolites. Thus, a comprehensive toxicological study of the six ILs on Aliivibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna and Raphidocelis subcapitata was conducted demonstrating that the compounds impose moderate and low toxicity. The end-products from [BMIM][MeSO4] and [n-Bu4N][I] biodegradation were assessed using Aliivibrio fischeri, exhibiting increased environmental impact of the latter following biotreatment. MKIV produced 19.29 g L-1 of biopolymer, comprising mainly glucose and galacturonic acid, from 25 g L-1 of glucose indicating high industrial significance for bioremediation and exopolysaccharide production.

Abstract
Comparison of chemical catalysis by metal complexes, enzymatic catalysis and whole-cell biocatalysis shows well-addressed advantages of the latter approach. However, a critical limitation in the practical applications originates from the high sensitivity of microorganisms to the toxic effects of organic solvents. In the present review, we consider toxic solvent properties of ionic liquid/water systems towards the development of efficient applications in practical organic transformations.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to evaluate the antibacterial activities and mode of action of sucrose monolaurate (SML) with a desirable purity, synthesized by Lipozyme TL IM-mediated transesterification in the novel ionic liquid, against four pathogenic bacteria including L. monocytogenes, B. subtilis, S. aureus, and E. coli. The antibacterial activity was determined by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and the time⁻kill assay. SML showed varying antibacterial activity against tested bacteria with MICs and MBCs of 2.5 and 20 mM for L. monocytogenes, 2.5 and 20 mM for B. subtilis, 10 and 40 mM for S. aureus, respectively. No dramatic inhibition was observed for E. coli at 80 mM SML. Mechanism of bacterial inactivation caused by SML was revealed through comprehensive factors including cell morphology, cellular lysis, membrane permeability, K⁺ leakage, zeta potential, intracellular enzyme, and DNA assay. Results demonstrated that bacterial inactivation against Gram-positive bacteria was primarily induced by the pronounced damage to the cell membrane integrity. SML may interact with cytoplasmic membrane to disturb the regulation system of peptidoglycan hydrolase activities to degrade the peptidoglycan layer and form a hole in the layer. Then, the inside cytoplasmic membrane was blown out due to turgor pressure and the cytoplasmic materials inside leaked out. Leakage of intracellular enzyme to the supernatants implied that the cell membrane permeability was compromised. Consequently, the release of K⁺ from the cytosol lead to the alterations of the zeta potential of cells, which would disturb the subcellular localization of some proteins, and thereby causing bacterial inactivation. Moreover, remarkable interaction with DNA was also observed. SML at sub-MIC inhibited biofilm formation by these bacteria.

Abstract
The use of whole-cell biocatalysis in ionic liquid (IL)-containing systems has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Compared to bioreactions catalyzed by isolated enzymes, the major advantage of using whole cells in biocatalytic processes is that the cells provide a natural intracellular environment for the enzymes to function with in situ cofactor regeneration. To date, the applications of whole-cell biocatalysis in IL-containing systems have focused on the production of valuable compounds, mainly through reduction, oxidation, hydrolysis, and transesterification reactions. The interaction mechanisms between the ILs and biocatalysts in whole-cell biocatalysis offer the possibility to effectively integrate ILs with biotransformation. This chapter discusses these interaction mechanisms between ILs and whole-cell catalysts. In addition, examples of whole-cell catalyzed reactions with ILs will also be discussed. Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
Microorganisms have been exposed to a myriad of substrates and environmental conditions throughout evolution resulting in countless metabolites and enzymatic activities. Although mankind have been using these properties for centuries, we have only recently learned to control their production, to develop new biocatalysts with high stability and productivity and to improve their yields under new operational conditions. However, microbial cells still provide the best known environment for enzymes, preventing conformational changes in the protein structure in non-conventional medium and under harsh reaction conditions, while being able to efficiently regenerate necessary cofactors and to carry out cascades of reactions. Besides, a still unknown microbe is probably already producing a compound that will cure cancer, Alzeihmer's disease or kill the most resistant pathogen. In this review, the latest developments in screening desirable activities and improving production yields are discussed.

Abstract
Chemical and physical pretreatment of biomass is a critical step in the conversion of lignocellulose to biofuels and bioproducts. Ionic liquid (IL) pretreatment has attracted significant attention due to the unique ability of certain ILs to solubilize some or all components of the plant cell wall. However, these ILs inhibit not only the enzyme activities but also the growth and productivity of microorganisms used in downstream hydrolysis and fermentation processes. While pretreated biomass can be washed to remove residual IL and reduce inhibition, extensive washing is costly and not feasible in large-scale processes. IL-tolerant microorganisms and microbial communities have been discovered from environmental samples and studies begun to elucidate mechanisms of IL tolerance. The discovery of IL tolerance in environmental microbial communities and individual microbes has lead to the proposal of molecular mechanisms of resistance. In this article, we review recent progress on discovering IL-tolerant microorganisms, identifying metabolic pathways and mechanisms of tolerance, and engineering microorganisms for IL tolerance. Research in these areas will yield new approaches to overcome inhibition in lignocellulosic biomass bioconversion processes and increase opportunities for the use of ILs in biomass pretreatment.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop an ionic liquid (IL) system for the enzymatic resolution of racemic ibuprofen ethyl ester to produce (S)-ibuprofen. Nineteen ILs were selected for use in buffer systems to investigate the effects of ILs as cosolvents for the production of (S)-ibuprofen using thermostable esterase (EST10) from Thermotoga maritima. Analysis of the catalytic efficiency and conformation of EST10 showed that [OmPy][BF₄] was the best medium for the EST10-catalyzed production of (S)-ibuprofen. The maximum degree of conversion degree (47.4%), enantiomeric excess of (S)-ibuprofen (96.6%) and enantiomeric ratio of EST10 (177.0) were achieved with an EST10 concentration of 15 mg/mL, racemic ibuprofen ethyl ester concentration of 150 mM, at 75 °C , with a reaction time of 10 h. The reaction time needed to achieve the highest yield of (S)-ibuprofen was decreased from 24 h to 10 h. These results are relevant to the proposed application of ILs as solvents for the EST10-catalyzed production of (S)-ibuprofen.

Abstract
Synthesis of several hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs), which might be selected as good candidates for degradation of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds in a two-phase partitioning bioreactor (TPPB), were carried out. Several bioassays were also realized, such as toxicity evaluation on activated sludge and zebrafish, cytotoxicity, fluoride release in aqueous phase and biodegradability in order to verify their possible effects in case of discharge in the aquatic environment and/or human contact during industrial manipulation. The synthesized compounds consist of alkylimidazoliums, functionalized imidazoliums, isoqinoliniums, triazoliums, sulfoniums, pyrrolidiniums and morpholiniums and various counter-ions such as: PF6(-), NTf2(-) and NfO(-). Toxicity evaluation on activated sludge of each compound (5% v/v of IL) was assessed by using a glucose uptake inhibition test. Toxicity against zebrafish and cytotoxicity were evaluated by the ImPACCell platform of Rennes (France). Fluoride release in water was estimated by regular measurements using ion chromatography equipment. IL biodegradability was determined by measuring BOD28 of aqueous samples (compound concentration,1mM). All ILs tested were not biodegradable; while some of them were toxic toward activated sludge. Isoquinolinium ILs were toxic to human cancerous cell lines. Nevertheless no toxicity was found against zebrafish Danio rerio. Only one IL released fluoride after long-time agitation.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) can play multiple roles in lignocellulose biorefineries, including utilization as agents for the separation of selected compounds or as reaction media for processing lignocellulosic materials (LCM). Imidazolium-based ILs have been proposed for separating target components from LCM biorefinery streams, for example, the dehydration of ethanol-water mixtures or the extractive separation of biofuels (ethanol, butanol) or lactic acid from the respective fermentation broths. As in other industries, ILs are potentially suitable for removing volatile organic compounds or carbon dioxide from gaseous biorefinery effluents. On the other hand, cellulose dissolution in ILs allows homogeneous derivatization reactions to be carried out, opening new ways for product design or for improving the quality of the products. Imidazolium-based ILs are also suitable for processing native LCM, allowing the integral benefit of the feedstocks via separation of polysaccharides and lignin. Even strongly lignified materials can yield cellulose-enriched substrates highly susceptible to enzymatic hydrolysis upon ILs processing. Recent developments in enzymatic hydrolysis include the identification of ILs causing limited enzyme inhibition and the utilization of enzymes with improved performance in the presence of ILs.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are entirely composed of ions and they possess fascinating properties, including low volatility, tunable viscosity, miscibility and electrolytic conductivity, which make them promising alternatives to traditional organic solvents used in sample preparation. The recent surge in the number of publications clearly indicates an increasing interest of the analytical and bioanalytical community toward these exciting and unique solvents. This article highlights the recent advances in the use of ILs as extraction solvents, as materials for separation and preconcentration in chromatographic techniques, and as matrices in mass spectrometric techniques for bioassays in biocomplex samples. We also briefly discuss the potential applications of ILs in biocatalysis.

Abstract
Thermal stability limits of 33 imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) immobilized on three of the most commonly used high surface area metal-oxides, SiO2, γ-Al2O3, and MgO, were investigated. ILs were chosen from a family of 13 cations and 18 anions. Results show that the acidity of C2H of an imidazolium ring is one of the key factors controlling the thermal stability. An increase in C2H bonding strength of ILs leads to an increase in their stability limits accompanied by a decrease in interionic energy. Systematic changes in IL structure, such as changes in electronic structure and size of anion/cation, methylation on C2 site, and substitution of alkyl groups on the imidazolium ring with functional groups have significant effects on thermal stability limits. Furthermore, thermal stability limits of ILs are influenced strongly by acidic character of the metal-oxide surface. Generally, as the point of zero charge (PZC) of the metal-oxide increases from SiO2 to MgO, the interactions of IL and metal-oxide dominate over interionic interactions, and metal-oxide becomes the significant factor controlling the stability limits. However, thermal stability limits of some ILs show the opposite trend, as the chemical activities of the cation functional group or the electron donating properties of the anion alter IL/metal-oxide interactions. Results presented here can help in choosing the most suitable ILs for materials involving ILs supported on metal-oxides, such as for supported ionic liquid membranes (SILM) in separation applications or for solid catalyst with ionic liquid layer (SCILL) and supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalysts in catalysis.
