Isolation and identification of an iopromide-degrading strain and its application in an A2/O system

Occurrence of iodinated contrast media (ICM) in water environments and their control strategies with a particular focus on iodinated by-products formation: A comprehensive review

Iodinated contrast media (ICM), one of the pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), are frequently detected in various water bodies due to the strong biochemical stability and recalcitrance to conventional water treatment. Additionally, ICM pose a risk of forming iodinated by-products that can be detrimental to the aquatic ecosystem. Consequently, effectively removing ICM from aqueous environments is a significant concern for environmental researchers. This article provides a comprehensive review of the structural characteristics of ICM, their primary source (e.g., domestic and hospital wastewater), detected concentrations in water environments, and ecological health hazards associated with them. The current wastewater treatment technologies for ICM control are also reviewed in detail with the aim of providing a reference for future research. Prior researches have demonstrated that traditional treatment processes (such as physical adsorption, biochemical method and chemical oxidation method) have inadequate efficiencies in the removal of ICM. Currently, the application of advanced oxidation processes to remove ICM has become extensive, but there are some issues like poor deiodination efficiency and the risk of forming toxic intermediates or iodinated by-products. Conversely, reduction technologies have a high deiodination rate, enabling the targeted removal of ICM. But the subsequent treatment issues related to iodine (such as I- and OI-) are often underestimated, potentially generating iodinated by-products during the subsequent treatment processes. Hence, we proposed using combined reduction-oxidation technologies to remove ICM and achieved synchronous control of iodinated by-products. In the future, it is recommended to study the degradation efficiency of ICM and the control efficiency of iodinated by-products by combining different reduction and oxidation processes.

Influence of nalidixic acid on tandem heterotrophic-autotrophic kinetics in a "NIPHO" activated sludge reactor

This work analyzes the effect of nalidixic acid (NAL) on the kinetics of the heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass growth within a "NIPHO" activated sludge reactor treating municipal wastewater. Thus, the effect of this chemical in the degradation rates of carbon and nitrogen sources and net biomass growth rate is evaluated. Activated sludge samples were taken at three different operation conditions, changing the values of hydraulic retention time (2.8-3.8 h), biomass concentration (1400-1700 mgVSS L^-1), temperature (12.6-14.8 °C), and sludge retention time (11.0-12.6 day). A respirometric method was applied to model the kinetic performance of heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass in absence and presence of NAL, and a multivariable statistical analysis was carried out to characterize the influence of the operation variables on the kinetic response of the system, which was finally optimized. The results showed that there was no inhibitory effect of NAL on heterotrophic biomass, with an increase of net heterotrophic biomass growth rate from 1.70 to 6.73 mgVSS L^-1 h^-1 at the most favorable period. By contrast, the autotrophic biomass was negatively affected by NAL, reducing the value of net autotrophic biomass growth rate from 25.37 to 10.29 mgVSS L^-1 h^-1 at the best operation conditions. In general, biomass concentration and temperature had the highest influence on the degradation rate of carbon and nitrogen sources, whereas hydraulic retention time and sludge retention time were the most influential on net heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass growth rates.

Anaerobic Transformation of the Iodinated X-ray Contrast Medium Iopromide, Its Aerobic Transformation Products, and Transfer to Further Iodinated X-ray Contrast Media

The iodinated X-ray contrast medium (ICM) iopromide and its aerobic transformation products (TPs) are frequently detected in the effluents of wastewater treatment plants and in different compartments of the aquatic environment. In this study, the anaerobic transformation of iopromide and its aerobic TPs was investigated in water-sediment systems. Iopromide, its final aerobic TP didespropanediol iopromide (DDPI), and its primary aniline desmethoxyacetyl iopromide (DAMI) were used as model substances. Five biologically formed anaerobic TPs of iopromide and DAMI and six of DDPI, and the respective transformation pathways, were identified. The TPs were formed by successive deiodination and hydrolysis of amide moieties. Quantification of the iodinated TPs was achieved by further development of a complementary liquid chromatography (LC)-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-ToF-MS) and LC-inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) strategy without needing authentic standards, despite several TPs coeluting with others. A database with predicted anaerobic TPs of ICMs was derived by applying the transformation rules found for the anaerobic transformation pathways of iopromide and diatrizoate to further ICMs (iomeprol and iopamidol) and their aerobic TPs already reported in the literature. The environmental relevance of the identified transformation pathways was confirmed by identifying an experimental TP and two predicted TPs using suspect screening of water taken from anaerobic bank filtration zones.

Evaluation of simultaneous organic matters and nutrients removal from municipal wastewater using a novel bioreactor (D-A2O) system

A novel bioreactor, the divisional influent dual-anaerobic-anoxic/oxic (D-A²O) system, was applied to treat municipal wastewater. This new system improved the removal efficiency of simultaneous organic matters and nutrients, and provided a reduction in the system's energy costs and sludge yield. Results from the reactor's 18 months of operation demonstrated the following optimal conditions for the 4 key parameters of the system: (1) a divisional ratio (DR) of 8:2 between the influent flow volumes fed into the anaerobic and anoxic tanks, (2) a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h, (3) a R:r ratio of 200%:100% between the mixed liquor return ratio (R) and the return activated sludge ratio (r), and (4) an alternative operating time (t_A/B) of 1 h for the A/B anaerobic-anoxia series. Under optimal conditions, the system showed a high removal efficiency for the chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N), and total phosphorus (TP) removals, with the average removal efficiencies (with a standard deviation of less than 3%) being 95.23%, 80.64%, 90.42%, and 90.03%, respectively. The final concentration ranges of COD, TN, NH₃-N, and TP in the effluent were 26-48 mg L^-1, 6.11-11.03 mg L^-1, 2.93-4.04 mg L^-1, and 0.21-0.45 mg L^-1, respectively. The concentrations of the pollutants in the effluent from the D-A²O system were lower than those required for Level 1A (Chinese quality of wastewater discharge standard GB18918-2002). According to the results, we concluded that the divisional influent dual-anaerobic-anoxic system (which integrated the A²O and sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process) was successfully provided sufficient carbon sources for denitrification and phosphorus uptake without external carbon addition. Compared to the conventional anaerobic-anoxic/oxic (A²O) process, the D-A²O system offers a high removal efficiency, simple operation, and significant energy saving of about 0.276 kWh m^-3 based on the volume of the treated water. Therefore, the new D-A²O system has a strong potential for use in treatment plants.

Co-metabolic degradation of iomeprol by a Pseudomonas sp. and its application in biological aerated filter systems

The non-ionic water-soluble X-ray contrast agent iomeprol (IOM) enters the water supply through sewage treatment plants, which can cause considerable environmental harm. In this study, Pseudomonas sp. I-24 (I-24) was tested for its ability to remove IOM from water via co-metabolic pathways. The optimum removal rate of IOM by I-24 was 38.43% ± 3.70% when starch served as the source of external carbon, and its co-metabolism of IOM conformed to the first-order kinetics. The highest activity of intracellular enzyme (degrading enzyme) extracted from I-24 was 0.143 ± 0.005 mU in starch condition. The Michaelis constant of the degrading enzyme was found to be 91.08 μmol L^-1. However, glucose and maltose showed the best promotive effects on the growth and electron transport activity of I-24, indicating that overgrowth may result in competitive inhibition and a reduced degradation rate of IOM. Adding I-24 and degrading enzymes to biological aerated filters increased IOM removal rates without affecting COD_Mn removal.

Removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater: A review

The pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging pollutants which might pose potential hazards to environment and health. These pollutants are becoming ubiquitous in the environments because they cannot be effectively removed by the conventional wastewater treatment plants due to their toxic and recalcitrant performance. The presence of PPCPs has received increasing attention in recent years, resulting in great concern on their occurrence, transformation, fate and risk in the environments. A variety of technologies, including physical, biological and chemical processes have been extensively investigated for the removal of PPCPs from wastewater. In this paper, the classes, functions and the representatives of the frequently detected PPCPs in aquatic environments were summarized. The analytic methods for PPCPs were briefly introduced. The removal efficiency of PPCPs by wastewater treatment plants was analyzed and discussed. The removal of PPCPs from wastewater by physical, chemical and biological processes was analyzed, compared and summarized. Finally, suggestions are made for future study of PPCPs. This review can provide an overview for the removal of PPCPs from wastewater.

Cometabolic degradation of organic wastewater micropollutants by activated sludge and sludge-inherent microorganisms

Municipal wastewaters contain a multitude of organic trace pollutants. Often, their biodegradability by activated sludge microorganisms is decisive for their elimination during wastewater treatment. Since the amounts of micropollutants seem too low to serve as growth substrate, cometabolism is supposed to be the dominating biodegradation process. Nevertheless, as many biodegradation studies were performed without the intention to discriminate between metabolic and cometabolic processes, the specific contribution of the latter to substance transformations is often not clarified. This minireview summarizes current knowledge about the cometabolic degradation of organic trace pollutants by activated sludge and sludge-inherent microorganisms. Due to their relevance for communal wastewater contamination, the focus is laid on pharmaceuticals, personal care products, antibiotics, estrogens, and nonylphenols. Wherever possible, reference is made to the molecular process level, i.e., cometabolic pathways, involved enzymes, and formed transformation products. Particular cometabolic capabilities of different activated sludge consortia and various microbial species are highlighted. Process conditions favoring cometabolic activities are emphasized. Finally, knowledge gaps are identified, and research perspectives are outlined.
