Effect of transient organic load and aeration changes to pollutant removal and extracellular polymeric substances

Transient organic load shocks have an important influence on the removal of pollutants and the content and composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). This study was based on a micro-pressure reactor (MPR) with the influent COD concentration as the variable, while different operating conditions were controlled by adjusting the aeration rate. The effect of single-cycle transient organic loading shocks on EPS and pollutant removal and the correlation between their changes were investigated. The results showed that COD removal was unaffected under the shock, and the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus removal decreased. As the incoming carbon source increased, the EPS content at shock increased, with the polysaccharide (PS) content being the most affected. As aeration increased, the effect of organic load shock on EPS and pollutant removal decreased. Under different aeration conditions, PS contributed to denitrification and anaerobic phosphorus release during transient organic load shocks, and protein (PN) contributed to aerobic phosphorus uptake. The reduction in PS and PN relative to the pre-shock caused by the shock resulted in the EPS exhibiting a favourable effect on COD removal and an inhibitory effect on the effectiveness of nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

A new approach for concurrently improving performance of South Korean food waste valorization and renewable energy recovery via dry anaerobic digestion under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

Dry semicontinuous anaerobic digestion (AD) of South Korean food waste (FW) under four solid loading rates (SLRs) (2.30-9.21kg total solids (TS)/m³day) and at a fixed TS content was compared between two digesters, one each under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. Biogas production and organic matter reduction in both digesters followed similar trends, increasing with rising SLR. Inhibitor (intermediate products of the anaerobic fermentation process) effects on the digesters' performance were not observed under the studied conditions. In all cases tested, the digesters' best performance was achieved at the SLR of 9.21kg TS/m³day, with 74.02% and 80.98% reduction of volatile solids (VS), 0.87 and 0.90m³ biogas/kg VS_removed, and 0.65 (65% CH₄) and 0.73 (60.02% CH₄) m³ biogas/kg VS_fed, under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, respectively. Thermophilic dry AD is recommended for FW treatment in South Korea because it is more efficient and has higher energy recovery potential when compared to mesophilic dry AD.

Efficient treatment of azo dye containing wastewater in a hybrid acidogenic bioreactor stimulated by biocatalyzed electrolysis

In this study, a novel scaled-up hybrid acidogenic bioreactor (HAB) was designed and adopted to evaluate the performance of azo dye (acid red G, ARG) containing wastewater treatment. Principally, HAB is an acidogenic bioreactor coupled with a biocatalyzed electrolysis module. The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and ARG loading rate on the performance of HAB were investigated. In addition, the influent was switched from synthetic wastewater to domestic wastewater to examine the key parameters for the application of HAB. The results showed that the introduction of the biocatalyzed electrolysis module could enhance anoxic decolorization and COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal. The combined process of HAB-CASS presented superior performance compared to a control system without biocatalyzed electrolysis (AB-CASS). When the influent was switched to domestic wastewater, with an environment having more balanced nutrients and diverse organic matters, the ARG, COD and nitrogen removal efficiencies of HAB-CASS were further improved, reaching 73.3%±2.5%, 86.2%±3.8% and 93.5%±1.6% at HRT of 6 hr, respectively, which were much higher than those of AB-CASS (61.1%±4.7%, 75.4%±5.0% and 82.1%±2.1%, respectively). Moreover, larger TCV/TV (total cathode volume/total volume) for HAB led to higher current and ARG removal. The ARG removal efficiency and current at TCV/TV of 0.15 were 39.2%±3.7% and 28.30±1.48 mA, respectively. They were significantly increased to 62.1%±2.0% and 34.55±0.83 mA at TCV/TV of 0.25. These results show that HAB system could be used to effectively treat real wastewater.
