Utilizing CO2 in industrial off-gas for microalgae cultivation: considerations and solutions

The utilization of microalgae to treat carbon dioxide (CO2)-rich industrial off-gas has been suggested as both beneficial for emissions reduction and economically favorable for the production of microalgal products. Common sources of off-gases include coal combustion (2-15% CO2), cement production (8-15% CO2), coke production (18-23% CO2), and ore smelting (6-7% CO2). However, industrial off-gas also commonly contains other acid gas components [typically nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur dioxide (SO2)] and metals that could inhibit microalgae growth and productivity. To utilize industrial off-gas effectively in microalgae cultivation systems, a number of solutions have been proposed to overcome potential inhibitions. These include bioprospecting to identify suitable strains, genetic modification to improve specific cellular characteristics, chemical additions, and bioreactor designs and operating procedures.In this review, results from microalgae experiments related to utilizing off-gas are presented, and the outcomes of different conditions discussed along with potential solutions to resolve limitations associated with the application of off-gas.

Recent advances in the bio-application of microalgae-derived biochemical metabolites and development trends of photobioreactor-based culture systems

Microalgae are microscopic algae in sizes ranging from a few micrometers to several hundred micrometers. On average, half of the oxygen in the atmosphere is produced by the photosynthetic process of microalgae, so the role of these microorganisms in the life cycle of the planet is very significant. Pharmaceutical products derived from microalgae and commercial developments of a variety of supplements extracted from them originate from a variety of their specific secondary metabolites. Many of these microalgae are a reservoir of unique biological compounds including carotenoids, antioxidants, fatty acids, polysaccharides, enzymes, polymers, peptides, pigments, toxins and sterols with antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic, anticoagulant, and anticancer properties. The present work begins with an introduction of the importance of microalgae in renewable fuels and biodiesel production, the development of healthy food industry, and the creation of optimal conditions for efficient biomass yield. This paper provides the latest research related to microalgae-derived substances in the field of improving drug delivery, immunomodulatory, and anticancer attributes. Also, the latest advances in algal biocompounds to combat the COVID-19 pandemic are presented. In the subject of cultivation and growth of microalgae, the characteristics of different types of photobioreactors, especially their latest forms, are fully discussed along with their advantages and obstacles. Finally, the potential of microalgae biomass in biotechnological applications, biofuel production, as well as various biomass harvesting methods are described.

Hydrodynamics and mass transfer of concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactors: A review

The concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactor is a typical reactor configuration which has been adopted for a myriad of chemical and biological processes. The reactor hydrodynamics (including mixing) and the mass transfer between the gas and liquid phases remarkably affect the operational conditions and thus are crucial to the overall reactor performance. Hence, this study aims at providing a thorough description of the basic concepts and a comprehensive review of the relevant reported studies on the hydrodynamics and mass transfer of the concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactors, taking microalgae cultivation as an exemplary application. In particular, the reactor characteristics, geometry, CFD modeling, experimental characterization, and scale up considerations are elucidated. The research gaps for future research and development are also identified.

Selection and re-acclimation of bioprospected acid-tolerant green microalgae suitable for growth at low pH

For mass culture of photosynthetic green microalgae, industrial flue gases can represent a low-cost resource of CO₂. However, flue gases are often avoided, because they often also contain high levels of SO₂ and/or NO₂, which cause significant acidification of media to below pH 3 due to production of sulfuric and nitric acid. This creates an unsuitable environment for the neutrophilic microalgae commonly used in large-scale commercial production. To address this issue, we have looked at selecting acid-tolerant microalgae via growth at pH 2.5 carried out with samples bioprospected from an active smelter site. Of the eight wild samples collected, one consisting mainly of Coccomyxa sp. grew at pH 2.5 and achieved a density of 640 mg L^-1. Furthermore, three previously bioprospected green microalgae from acidic waters (pH 3-4.5) near abandoned mine sites were also re-acclimated down to their in-situ pH environment after approximately 4 years spent at neutral pH. Of those three, an axenic culture of Coccomyxa sp. was the most successful at re-acclimating and achieved the highest density of 293.1 mg L^-1 and maximum daily productivity of 38.8 mg L^-1 day^-1 at pH 3. Re-acclimation of acid-tolerant species is, therefore, achievable when directly placed at their original pH, but gradual reduction in pH is recommended to give the cells time to acclimate.

Chlorella vulgaris growth in different biodigested vinasse concentrations: biomass, pigments and final composition

Vinasse, an effluent generated during sugar and alcohol production, has great potential for soil and water pollution; however, it can be treated, used in biomass production and reused in sugarcane plantations. Thus, this work uses different types of biodigested vinasse to produce more biomass. The effect is the removal of ammonia nitrogen quickly and the end of the exponential growth phase of microalgae at different levels from the sixth day of cultivation. Among the concentrations used, the use of 50% biodigested vinasse showed the highest biomass concentration (255 mg L^-1) after 10 days of growth, coinciding with the end of ammoniacal nitrogen availability and stabilization of effluent color removal. The addition of biodigested vinasse also provides an increase in Chlorophyll a (5.33 mg L^-1) and b (4.66 mg L^-1) levels, obtained on the sixth day with 40% of vinasse, as well as protein (40.50%) with 50% effluent. Therefore, with the obtained results we noticed the variation of the biomass composition according to the vinasse concentration and increase of the pigment concentration in the presence of the effluent with higher nutrient concentration. Thus, the higher concentration of vinasse was more productive of the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris.

Numerical simulation on promoting light/dark cycle frequency to improve microalgae growth in photobioreactor with serial lantern-shaped draft tube

Computational fluid dynamics were employed to simulate microalgal cells movement with enhanced flash-light effects in a gaslift loop-current column photobioreactor (GLCP) with serial lantern-shaped draft tube (LDT). Clockwise and anticlockwise vortexes were formed in outer down-flow region of GLCP with LDT. The radial velocity, axial velocity, and turbulent kinetic energy of microalgal solution appeared periodical change around the lanterns. The average radial velocity showed a sixfold improvement from 0.003 m/s to 0.021 m/s, and average turbulent kinetic energy was enhanced by 18.2% from 22.5 × 10^-4 m²/s² to 26.6 × 10^-4 m²/s², thus increasing light/dark cycle frequency by 54%. The light/dark cycle frequency increased first and then decreased with an increase of individual lantern height. The increased lantern number promoted the light/dark cycle frequency and light time ratio. Microalgal biomass yield in the GLCP with LDT was improved by 30%, and CO₂ fixation peak rate was promoted by 35%.

Multilateral approach on enhancing economic viability of lipid production from microalgae: A review

Microalgae have been rising as a feedstock for biofuel in response to the energy crisis. Due to a high lipid content, composed of fatty acids favorable for the biodiesel production, microalgae are still being investigated as an alternative to biodiesel. Environmental factors and process conditions can alternate the quality and the quantity of lipid produced by microalgae, which can be critical for the overall production of biodiesel. To maximize both the lipid content and the biomass productivity, it is necessary to start with robust algal strains and optimal physio-chemical properties of the culture environment in combination with a novel culture system. These accumulative approaches for cost reduction can take algal process one step closer in achieving the economic feasibility.

Serial lantern-shaped draft tube enhanced flashing light effect for improving CO2 fixation with microalgae in a gas-lift circumflux column photobioreactor

A novel serial lantern-shaped draft tube (LDT) that generates vortices is proposed to increase radial velocity between dark and light regions for improving CO₂ fixation with microalgae in a gas-lift circumflux column (GCC) photobioreactor. Clockwise vortices are generated in the downflow outerloop of the GCC photobioreactor with LDT. Radial velocity was improved from 1.50 to 4.35 × 10^-2 m/s, thereby decreased liquid cycle period between dark and light regions by 1.9 times. Mixing time decreased by 21%, and mass transfer coefficient increased by 26% with LDT. Liquid radial velocity in the downflow outerloop and mass transfer coefficient in the GCC photobioreactor both first increased and then decreased when single-lantern height was increased. Peak CO₂ fixation rate increased from 0.62 to 0.87 g/L/d, microalgal biomass yield increased by 50%. Removal efficiencies of pollutants (chemical oxygen demand, ammonium, tilmicosin, and ethinylestradiol) in wastewater were 62-90% with microalgae growth in GCC photobioreactor with LDT.

Computational fluid dynamics modeling of carbon dioxide capture from air using biocatalyst in an airlift reactor

In this work, a novel three-phase and three dimensional CFD model based on the Euler-Euler approach developed for modeling the hydrodynamic, mass transfer and CO₂ fixation using microalgae in an internal loop airlift reactor with internal sparger. The main objective of this work was to development of CFD codes in order to simulate the CO₂ biofixation process under different input gas velocity during 11 days of culture time and simulate the unsteady state mass transfer based on Surface-Renewal-Stretch (SRS) model. The CFD results were compared with the our previous experimental work and they showed good agreement with a margin of less than 10%. This paper illustrated the ability of the CFD in complex process simulation such as CO₂ biofixation in the airlift reactor and provided a useful basis for further study.

Improving microalgal growth by strengthening the flashing light effect simulated with computational fluid dynamics in a panel bioreactor with horizontal baffles

Biological CO₂ elimination by photosynthetic microalgae is a sustainable way to mitigate CO₂ from flue gas and other sources. Computational fluid dynamics was used to simulate algal cell movement with an enhanced flashing light effect in a novel panel bioreactor with horizontal baffles. Calculation results showed that the light/dark (L/D) cycle period decreased by 17.5% from 17.1 s to 14.1 s and that the horizontal fluid velocity increased by 95% while horizontal baffles were used under a 0.02 vvm air aeration rate and a microalgal concentration of 0.85 g L⁻¹. The probability of the L/D cycle period within 5–10 s increased from 27.9% to 43.6%, indicating a 56% increase when horizontal baffles existed. It was proved by experiments that the mass-transfer coefficient increased by 31% and the mixing time decreased by 13% under a 0.06 vvm air aeration rate when horizontal baffles were used, and the algal biomass yield increased by ∼51% along with the decrease in the L/D cycle period when horizontal baffles were used.

Developing a water-circulating column photobioreactor for microalgal growth with low energy consumption

A water-circulating column photobioreactor (WCC-PBR) was developed to decrease bubble generation time and mixing time for growing microalgal biomass at low energy consumption. Bubble generation time was decreased by 60.4% and mixing time was decreased by 41.5% owing to an enhanced solution velocity with a water pump. Bubble residence time was decreased by 31.1% and mass transfer coefficient was decreased by 0.4% owing to a reduced distance between air aerator and solution surface. Microalgal growth rate was decreased by 12.7% from 128.9mg/Lday in an air-lifting column photobioreactor (ALC-PBR) to 112.6mg/Lday in a WCC-PBR because of the decrease in residence time of bubbles and an additional shear of cells in a water pump. However, total energy consumption of a WCC-PBR with an air compressor and a water pump was lower by 21.1% than that of an ALC-PBR with only an air compressor.

Enhanced solution velocity between dark and light areas with horizontal tubes and triangular prism baffles to improve microalgal growth in a flat-panel photo-bioreactor

Novel horizontal tubes and triangular prism (HTTP) baffles that generate flow vortices were developed to increase solution velocity between dark and light areas and thus improve microalgal growth in a flat-panel photo-bioreactor. Solution velocity, mass-transfer coefficient, and mixing time were measured with a particle-imaging velocimeter, dissolved oxygen probes, and pH probes. The solution mass-transfer coefficient increased by 30% and mixing time decreased by 21% when the HTTP baffles were used. The solution velocity between dark and light areas increased from ∼0.9cm/s to ∼3.5cm/s, resulting in a decreased dark-light cycle period to one-fourth. This enhanced flashing light effect with the HTTP baffles dramatically increased microalgae biomass yield by 70% in the flat-panel photo-bioreactor.
