Predicting xylose yield from prehydrolysis of hardwoods: A machine learning approach

Hemicelluloses are amorphous polymers of sugar molecules that make up a major fraction of lignocellulosic biomasses. They have applications in the bioenergy, textile, mining, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Industrial use of hemicellulose often requires that the polymer be hydrolyzed into constituent oligomers and monomers. Traditional models of hemicellulose degradation are kinetic, and usually only appropriate for limited operating regimes and specific species. The study of hemicellulose hydrolysis has yielded substantial data in the literature, enabling a diverse data set to be collected for general and widely applicable machine learning models. In this paper, a dataset containing 1955 experimental data points on batch hemicellulose hydrolysis of hardwood was collected from 71 published papers dated from 1985 to 2019. Three machine learning models (ridge regression, support vector regression and artificial neural networks) are assessed on their ability to predict xylose yield and compared to a kinetic model. Although the performance of ridge regression was unsatisfactory, both support vector regression and artificial neural networks outperformed the simple kinetic model. The artificial neural network outperformed support vector regression, reducing the mean absolute error in predicting soluble xylose yield of test data to 6.18%. The results suggest that machine learning models trained on historical data may be used to supplement experimental data, reducing the number of experiments needed.

Improving enzymatic hydrolysis of mechanically refined poplar branches with assistance of hydrothermal and Fenton pretreatment

The combination of different pretreatment methods can effectively overcome recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass to ensure its highly efficient conversion into bio-based products. In this study, the combined pretreatments of chemical methods (hydrothermal treatment and Fenton treatment) with mechanical refining were used to improve the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of poplar branches. The results indicated that hydrothermal pretreatment and Fenton pretreatment can effectively improve the enzymatic hydrolysis of poplar substrates, e.g., the maximum glucose conversion yield and glucose concentration reached 92.4% and 20.8 g/L, respectively. The pre-hydrolysates contained some valuable components such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, acetic acid, furfural, and hydroxymethylfurfural. The main characteristics (specific surface area, water retention value, fines content, and surface lignin concentration) of poplar substrates were obviously changed by the combined pretreatment, which benefit the enzymatic hydrolysis.

Color evolution of poplar wood chips and its response to lignin and extractives changes in autohydrolysis pretreatment

Combining chemi-mechanical pulping with autohydrolysis pretreatment is an efficient and value-added utilization approach for lignocellulosic biomass in paper industry. To further promote the utilization of autohydrolyzed biomass in chemi-mechanical pulping, the color evolution of poplar wood chips in autohydrolysis pretreatment and its chromogenic mechanism were investigated by using CIELab color system, FT-IR, NMR and GPC. The results showed that the total color difference ΔE* increased obviously, which were remarkable as the combined hydrolysis factor (CHF) increased. The lignin content led to a more significant influence on the color of poplar wood chips than the extractives. The autohydrolysis pretreatment with a higher CHF accelerated the degradation and subsequent condensation of lignin, resulting in the formation of chromophoric groups, such as Hibbert ketone, quinones and quinone methides. It is of great significance for biomass refinery and paper industry to reveal the color evolution of poplar wood chips caused by autohydrolysis pretreatment from the point of view of chemical components' structure.

Balancing the effect of pretreatment severity on hemicellulose extraction and pulping performance during auto-hydrolysis prior to kraft pulping of acacia wood

When using a combination of pre-extraction and chemical pulping, a high yield of sugar recovery and minimal negative effect on the subsequent pulping step are expected. In this work, the P factor was utilized to investigate the effect of auto-hydrolysis severity on sugar recovery, removal of the main component, and impact on the kraft pulping of acacia wood chips. Using a P factor of 235, 84.34% of the polysaccharides in 14.05 g L^-1 of dissolved sugars could be obtained. In addition, the soluble sugars were easily separated with a recovery yield of 3.54 g ·L^-1 and Mw of 4,690 g mol^-1 by direct precipitation using organic solvents. However, a maximum of 22.14 g L^-1 of dissolved sugars was obtained with approximately 72.53% polysaccharides and Mw of 2,198 g mol^-1 for a P factor of 601. Moreover, nearly 50% of the degraded carbohydrates remained in the auto-hydrolyzed wood chips. The decrease in the mass of pentosan, holocellulose, and klason lignin was 62, 30, and 8.76%, respectively. With intensifying severity, the screened yield and viscosity of pulps decreased markedly, whileas the Kappa number increased. No significant differences were observed in the morphology of the resultant fibers. Moreover, there was a decrease in the physical strength of the pulps due to the loss of the intrinsic strength of the pulp fibers, which in turn resulted from the cellulose damage. The combustion performance of the resultant pulping black liquor is improved due to the higher lignin content.

Autohydrolysis pretreatment assessment in ethanol production from agave bagasse

The aim of the present work was to assess the autohydrolysis pretreatment of Agave tequilana bagasse for ethanol production. The pretreatment was conducted using a one-liter high pressure Parr reactor under different severity factors (SF) at a 1:6w/v ratio (solid:liquid) and 200rpm. The solids obtained under the selected autohydrolysis conditions were subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis with a commercial cellulase cocktail, and the enzymatic hydrolysate was fermented using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results obtained from the pretreatment process showed that the glucan content in the pretreated solid was mostly preserved, and an increase in the digestibility was observed for the case with a SF of 4.13 (190°C, 30min). Enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated solids showed a yield of 74.3%, with a glucose concentration of 126g/L, resulting in 65.26g/L of ethanol after 10h of fermentation, which represent a 98.4% conversion according to the theoretical ethanol yield value.

Effect of autohydrolysis on the wettability, absorbility and further alkali impregnation of poplar wood chips

Autohydrolysis with different severity factors was performed on poplar wood chips prior to pulping, and the wettability, absorbility and the following impregnation of NaOH solution for the poplar wood chips were then investigated. The results showed that after autohydrolysis pretreatment the porosity, shrinkage and fiber saturation point (FSP) of the poplar wood chips were increased, while the surface contact angle decreased as the severity factor was increased. The autohydrolyzed chips absorbed more NaOH in impregnation that resulted in a low NaOH concentration in the bulk impregnation liquor (i.e., the impregnation liquor outside wood chips), while the concentration in the entrapped liquor (i.e., the impregnation liquor inside wood chips) was increased. Autohydrolysis substantially improved the effectiveness of alkali impregnation.
