The magic of algae-based biochar: advantages, preparation, and applications

Compared with other biomass sources, the use of algae as a raw material to prepare biochar (BC) has important advantages including safety, high yield and economy. The protein content of algae cells is as high as 3.2 mg DCW/L, and the graphitic-N and N-O functional groups generated by the pyrolysis of proteins could effectively activate free radicals. Combined with the generated pore structure, the electron transfer/exchange capability was enhanced, which is conducive to improving its catalytic performance. Algae as a natural N source, the manuscript analyzed the surface properties and physicochemical properties of algae-based BC, and investigated its degradation effect on organic/inorganic pollutants in wastewater. Subsequently, the effect of nitrogen-doped BC on the adsorption/catalysis capacity was discussed. Finally, the directed preparation of algae-based BC applied in different scenarios was summarized. Algae-based BC has the property of N doping, which broadens its application efficiency in the environmental field. Overall, this manuscript reviews how to achieve efficient utilization of algae-based BC in wastewater.

Overview on biofuels production in a seaweed biorefinery

The policy makers gathered at COP27 set a goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C above the pre- industrial level which requires a reduction of CO₂ emissions of 43% by 2030 (relative to 2019 value). To meet this target, it is imperative to replace fossil derivatives (fuels and chemicals) with biomass derivatives. Given that 70% of planet Earth is the ocean, blue carbon can contribute significantly to the mitigation of anthropogenic carbon emissions. Marine macroalgal, or seaweed, that stores carbon, mostly, in the form of sugars rather than lignocellulosic, like terrestrial biomass, is suitable as input raw material for biorefineries. Seaweed biomass has high growth rates, does not require fresh water or arable land, and therefore does not compete with conventional food production. To make seaweed based biorefineries profitable the valorization of biomass has to be maximized through cascade processes with the production of several high-value products such as pharmaceuticals/chemicals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, food, feed, fertilizers/biostimulants and low-carbon fuels. The composition of macroalgae, which varies depending on the species (green, red, or brown), the region in which it is grown, and the time of year, determines the variety of goods that can be made from it. Fuels must be made from seaweed leftovers since the market value of pharmaceuticals and chemicals is substantially larger than that of fuels. The following sections present a literature review on seaweed biomass valorization in the context of biorefinery with particular emphasis on low-carbon fuel production processes. An overview of seaweed's geographical distribution, composition, and production processes is also presented.

Hydrogen-Rich Syngas and Biochar Production by Non-Catalytic Valorization of Date Palm Seeds

Pyrolysis has been demonstrated to be a highly effective thermochemical process for converting complex biomaterials into biochar and syngas rich in hydrogen. The pyrolysis of mixed date palm seeds from Saudi Arabia was conducted using a fixed-bed pyrolyzer that was custom made for the purpose. The influence of the pyrolysis temperature (200–1000 °C) on the various physicochemical parameters of the date seed biochar generated through the pyrolysis process and the hydrogen-rich syngas was investigated. Proximate and ultimate analyses indicated a high carbon content in the lignocellulosic constituents such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Using energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, it was discovered that the elemental composition of biochar changes with the pyrolysis temperature. The date seeds pyrolyzed at 800 °C were found to have the maximum carbon concentration, with 97.99% of the total carbon content. The analysis of the biochar indicated a high concentration of carbon, as well as magnesium and potassium. There was a potential for the production of hydrogen-rich syngas, which increased with the pyrolysis temperature. At 1000 °C, the highest hydrogen and carbon monoxide compositions of 40 mol% and 32 mol%, respectively, were obtained. The kinetic data of the date seed pyrolysis were fitted using linearized model-free methods, such as Friedman, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS), as well as non-linear methods such as Vyazovkin and advanced Vyazovkin. The activation energies obtained from Friedman, FWO, and KAS varied in the range of 30–75 kJ/mol, 30–65 kJ/mol, and 30–40 kJ/mol, respectively, while those of Vyazovkin and advanced Vyazovkin were found in the range of 25–30 kJ/mol, and 30–70 kJ/mol, respectively. The analysis showed that the FWO and KAS models show smaller variation compared to Friedman.

Synchronous removal of emulsions and soluble organic contaminants via a microalgae-based membrane system: performance and mechanisms

In this study, we applied a flexible strategy to manufacture a microalgal biochar-based membrane (MBCM). Due to the hierarchical surface topography on a micro-nano scale, the MBCM was found to have both underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic properties. Combining an underoil superhydrophobic oil-containing region (OCR) with an underwater superoleophobic water-containing region (WCR) achieved the successive filtration of multiphase emulsions. The MBCM also served as a high-performance carbocatalyst for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), due to the N functionalities (5.08%) of the graphene-like structure. This was caused by the high-temperature pyrolysis of rich proteins and alkaline salts in the algal residue. As a result, the MBCM/AOPs system achieved greater than 99.5% emulsions separation efficiency in different emulsion mixtures, while also achieving an outstanding degradation rate (99.8%) of soluble organic contaminants (SOCs). This in-depth exploration resulted in a low-cost and green strategy for developing multifunctional membranes to treat complex wastewater. The paper explains the mechanisms used by MBCM to synchronously remove emulsions and SOCs from wastewater.

Catalytic pyrolysis of ulva lactuca macroalgae: Effects of mono and bimetallic catalysts and reaction parameters on bio-oil up-gradation

Catalytic pyrolysis of ulva lactuca (UL) macroalgae was studied over a series of ZrO₂ supported metal such as Co, Ni and Co-Ni metal catalysts at temperature range of 300-500 °C. Highest bio-oil yield (47.8 wt%) was found with Co-Ni/ZrO₂ (10 wt%) catalyst while non-catalytic yielded 42.5 wt% bio-oil. Moreover with increases the metal amount to 15 wt%, the bio-oil yield slightly increased (49.2 wt%). The bio-oil quality significantly improved with using the catalysts compared to the non-catalytic pyrolysis. Catalytic pyrolysis also revealed that introducing Co-Ni into the ZrO₂ could result in higher surface area and which increased active sites. Catalytic bio-oils were consisted of mainly long chain hydrocarbon in the range of C₆-C₁₆. Moreover, the catalytic bio-oils were showed the higher 'high heating value' (HHV) 38.1 MJ/kg as compare to non-catalytic bio-oils (29.4 MJ/kg). Catalysts have been showed excellent recyclability on bio-oil yield and compounds selectivity.

Chlorella to fuel conversion on amphiphilic SO3H-SBA-15 catalysts: Pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics

The aim of this work was to propose a novel process to make Chlorella pyrolyzed and in situ upgraded to fuel over amphiphilic SO₃H-SBA-15 catalysts. This strategy is developed to build a Pickering emulsion system through the w/o (water/decalin) droplets. Chlorella catalytic pyrolysis has been conducted under the different heating rates to get the activation energy 166 kJ/mol (α = 0.5) according to the kinetic-free model. Palmitic acid, as a model compound, was employed for TG and DRIFTS analysis to elucidate the pyrolysis and deoxygenation reaction pathway. n-hexadecane pyrolysis at 3 MPa N₂ illustrated the peak cracking temperature declining from thermally 422 °C to catalytically 413 °C. N₂ physisorption of the fresh and post-reaction catalysts indicated that there is little catalyst decay. With improved thermal stability and hydrophobicity, the SO₃H-SBA-15 catalysts showed enhanced performance for Chlorella pyrolysis, and revealed the promising application for better fuel production in aqueous conversion.

Characterization and Analysis of Malaysian Macroalgae Biomass as Potential Feedstock for Bio-Oil Production

The potential of Caulerpa lentillifera, Gracilaria coronopifolia and Chaetomorpha linum, as biomass feedstock was investigated in this study. It was concluded that seaweed is more suitable for bio-based products synthesis, i.e., bioplastic and bio-lubricants, instead of biofuels due to its relatively low calorific value (~12 MJ/kg). Since seaweed has high moisture content (~80%), hydrothermal liquefaction is recommended, and its efficiency can be further enhanced through microwave technology. Besides, it is found that the thermal degradation of seaweed was best described with the reaction order of 1. The kinetic results also indicated that seaweed consists of lower activation energy (<30 kJ/mol) in comparison with terrestrial biomass (50–170 kJ/mol). Hence, seaweed has a high potential to be used as biomass feedstock, particularly Chaetomorpha linum, as it has no conflict with other interests. Lastly, acetic-acid pre-treatment was suggested to be an optional process in order to increase the algal conversion efficiency as it can reduce up to 25% of ash content.

Thermal pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics of hemicellulose isolated from Camellia Oleifera Shell

Camellia Oleifera Shell (COS) is a kind of renewable lignocellulose resource and contains abundant hemicelluloses. In this work, the hemicelluloses in COS were extracted by alkali treatment and precipitated by ethanol with different concentration. Thermal pyrolysis kinetics of COS hemicelluloses were investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer at the heating rates of 5, 10, and 20 °C/min based on Coats-Redfern, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO), and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) model. The results showed that the best fitting thermal pyrolysis mechanism of COS hemicelluloses was one-dimensional diffusion reaction analyzed by Coats-Redfern model. The activation energies of COS hemicelluloses ranged from 175.07 to 247.87 kJ·mol^-1 and from 174.74 to 252.50 kJ·mol^-1 calculated by FWO and KAS, respectively. The thermal stabilities of COS hemicelluloses were enhanced with the precipitated ethanol concentration increasing, and reflected by thermodynamic parameters ΔH, ΔG and ΔS. This study may provide basic theoretical supports for the thermochemical conversion of COS hemicelluloses.

Pyrolysis of Musa balbisiana flower petal using thermogravimetric studies

In the present study, thermogravimetric analysis of Musa balbisiana flower petal was carried out to study the degradation behaviour and the kinetics in the pyrolytic reaction. The pyrolysis was carried out in the temperature range of 35-900 °C at different heating rates of 5, 10 and 20 °C/min. The kinetics was investigated using different models like Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Flynn-Ozawa-Wall (FOW), Friedman and Broido's plot. The average E_a values determined by KAS, FOW and Friedman methods were 137.94, 136.76 and 133.36 kJ/mol respectively. Coats-Redfern method was utilized to determine the pre-exponential factors and the reaction order of the pyrolysis. For the conversion rates 0.1 and 0.2, both Valensi and Ginstling diffusion models were found out to be appropriate for the solid state reaction mechanism. The HHV of Musa balbisiana flower petal was 16.35 MJ/kg, suggested as a potential bio-feedstock energy source from agro-waste.

Seasonal differences in the content of phenols and pigments in thalli of freshwater Cladophora glomerata and its habitat

Polyphenols are chemicals that primarily inhibit the growth of various autotrophic organisms. The presence of these metabolites greatly boosts the ecological dominance of eg. Cladophora, which creates large surface mats. The main goal of our work was to quantify the phenol and polyphenols (allelopathic substances) secreted by the macroalgae as a result of exposure to biotic stress caused by competition. The research was carried out on the Cladophora glomerata biomass collected from two freshwater ecosystems located in Wielkopolska Region (Poland, Fig. 1): Oporzynskie Lake (N52° 55', E 17° 9') and Nielba River (N52˚48', E 17° 12'). Seasonal variability (May-October 2015) in the properties of C. glomerata mats in the river and lake ecosystem was also analyzed in relation to the physicochemical parameters of water. In addition, the content of pigments in the analyzed biomass was determined during the appearance of algae mats in water reservoirs. Biomass extraction was performed to determine the phenolic and carotenoid contents (chlorophyll and carotenoids) by using two extraction methods: microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). After isolation of the phenols from the thalli (mats) and the habitat, they were analyzed using the Folin-Ciocalteu method with some modifications, while the pigment content (chlorophyll and carotenoids) was evaluated by the spectrophotometric method Liechtenthaler (1987) with some variations. Analysis of the content of these components in algae extracts indicates that the tendency of changes in their contents was similar or the same. Growth and decrease of phenolic content (Cladophora T MAE and Cladophora T SFE) and pigments (MAE chlorophyll, SFE and MAE carotenoids) at the same time were independent of the insulation method used. The mats formed by C. glomerata on the surface of Lake Oporzyńskie were more stable and larger surface area than those on the Nielba River, which could explain differences in polyphenol concentrations in these two aquatic ecosystems. The results suggest a reduction in the secretion of phenolic compounds with an aging population of algae.
