Enhanced phenol removal in an innovative lignite activated coke-assisted biological process

Symbiotic virus-bacteria interactions in biological treatment of coking wastewater manipulating bacterial physiological activities

Biological treatment is commonly used in coking wastewater (CWW) treatment. Prokaryotic microbial communities in CWW treatment have been comprehensively studied. However, viruses, as the critical microorganisms affecting microbial processes and thus engineering parameters, still remain poorly understood in CWW treatment context. Employing viromics sequencing, the composition and function of the viral community in CWW treatment were discovered, revealing novel viral communities and key auxiliary metabolic functions. Caudovirales appeared to be the predominant viral order in the oxic-hydrolytic-oxic (OHO) CWW treatment combination, showing relative abundances of 62.47 %, 56.64 % and 92.20 % in bioreactors O1, H and O2, respectively. At the family level, Myoviridae, Podoviridae and Siphoviridae mainly prevailed in bioreactors O1 and H while Phycodnaviridae dominated in O2. A total of 56.23-92.24% of novel viral contigs defied family-level characterization in this distinct CWW habitat. The virus-host prediction results revealed most viruses infecting the specific functional taxa Pseudomonas, Acidovorax and Thauera in the entire OHO combination, demonstrating the viruses affecting bacterial physiology and pollutants removal from CWW. Viral auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) were screened, revealing their involvement in the metabolism of contaminants and toxicity tolerance. In the bioreactor O1, AMGs were enriched in detoxification and phosphorus ingestion, where glutathione S-transferase (GSTs) and beta-ketoadipyl CoA thiolase (fadA) participated in biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols, respectively. In the bioreactors H and O2, the AMGs focused on cell division and epicyte formation of the hosts, where GDPmannose 4,6-dehydratase (gmd) related to lipopolysaccharides biosynthesis was considered to play an important role in the growth of nitrifiers. The diversities of viruses and AMGs decreased along the CWW treatment process, pointing to a reinforced virus-host adaptive strategy in stressful operation environments. In this study, the symbiotic virus-bacteria interaction patterns were proposed with a theoretical basis for promoting CWW biological treatment efficiency. The findings filled the gaps in the virus-bacteria interactions at the full-scale CWW treatment and provided great value for understanding the mechanism of biological toxicity and sludge activity in industrial wastewater treatment.

Effects of nitrate reduction on the biotransformation of 1H-1,2,4-triazole: Mechanism and community evolution

Due to the refractory of 1 H-1,2,4-triazole (TZ), conventional anaerobic biological treatment technology is usually restricted by low removal efficiency and poor system stability. In this study, TZ biodegradation and nitrate reduction was coupled to improve the removal efficiency of TZ from polluted wastewater. Batch assay was performed with pure culture strain Raoultella sp. NJUST42, which was reported to have the capability to degrade TZ in our previous study. Based on batch assay result, complete removal of TZ could be achieved in the presence of nitrate, whereas only 50% of TZ could be removed in the control system. Long-term stability experiment indicated that the relative abundance of microorganisms (Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17, Georgenia, Anaerolinea, etc) was obviously enhanced under nitrate reduction condition. During long-term period, major intermediates for TZ biodegradation such as [1,2,4]Triazolidine-3,5-diol, hydrazine dibasic carboxylic acid and carbamic acid were detected. A novel TZ biotransformation approach via hydration, TZ-ring cleavage, deamination and oxidation was speculated. PICRUSt1 and KEGG pathway analyses indicated that hydration (dch), oxidation (adhD, oah, pucG, fdhA) of TZ and nitrate reduction (Nar, napA, nrfA, nirBK, norB, nosZ) were significantly enhanced in the presence of nitrate. Moreover, the significant enrichment of TCA cycle (gab, sdh, fum, etc.) indicated that carbon and energy metabolism were facilitated with the addition of nitrate, thus improved TZ catabolism. The proposed mechanism demonstrated that TZ biodegradation coupled with nitrate reduction would be a promising approach for efficient treatment of wastewater contaminated by TZ.

Hydroquinone Ecotoxicity: Unveiling Risks in Soil and River Ecosystems with Insights into Microbial Resilience

Despite widespread industrial use, the environmental safety of hydroquinone (HQ), a benzene compound from plants used in processes like cosmetics, remains uncertain. This study evaluated the ecotoxicological impact of HQ on soil and river environments, utilizing non-target indicator organisms from diverse trophic levels: Daphnia magna, Aliivibrio fischeri, Allium cepa, and Eisenia fetida. For a more environmentally realistic assessment, microbial communities from a river and untreated soil underwent 16S rRNA gene sequencing, with growth and changes in community-level physiological profiling assessed using Biolog EcoPlate™ assays. The water indicator D. magna exhibited the highest sensitivity to HQ (EC50 = 0.142 µg/mL), followed by A. fischeri (EC50 = 1.446 µg/mL), and A. cepa (LC50 = 7.631 µg/mL), while E. fetida showed the highest resistance (EC50 = 234 mg/Kg). Remarkably, microbial communities mitigated HQ impact in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. River microorganisms displayed minimal inhibition, except for a significant reduction in polymer metabolism at the highest concentration (100 µg/mL). Soil communities demonstrated resilience up to 100 µg/mL, beyond which there was a significant decrease in population growth and the capacity to metabolize carbohydrates and polymers. Despite microbial mitigation, HQ remains highly toxic to various trophic levels, emphasizing the necessity for environmental regulations.

Temperature-regulated and starvation-induced refractory para-toluic acid anaerobic biotransformation

Little research was focused on the anerobic degradation of refractory para-toluic acid at present. Thus, temperature-regulated anaerobic system of para-toluic acid fed as sole substrate was built and investigated via microbiota, metabolism intermediates, and function prediction in this study. Results showed that low methane yield was produced in para-toluic acid anaerobic system at alkaline condition. And the causes were owing to anaerobic methane oxidation and potentially H2S production at 37 °C, N2 production by denitrification before starvation and propionic acid occurrence after starvation at 27 °C, and production of N2 and free ammonia, and accumulation of acetic acid at 52 °C. Simultaneously, hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis dependent on syntrophic acetate oxidation (SAO) was predominant, facilitating the removal of para-toluic acid at 52 °C. Moreover, the key intermediate changed from phthalic acid of 37 °C and 27 °C before starvation to terephthalic acid of 52 °C. Starvation promoted removal of para-toluic acid through benzoyl-CoA pathway by Syntrophorhabdus, enrichment of syntrophic propionate degraders of Bacteroidetes and Ignavibacteriaceae, and increase of methylotrophic methanogens.

Synergistic Treatment of Congo Red Dye with Heat Treated Low Rank Coal and Micro-Nano Bubbles

In this study, the adsorption method and micro-nano bubble (MNB) technology were combined to improve the efficiency of organic pollutant removal from dye wastewater. The adsorption properties of Congo red (CR) on raw coal and semi-coke (SC) with and without MNBs were studied. The mesoporosity of the coal strongly increased after the heat treatment, which was conducive to the adsorption of macromolecular organics, such as CR, and the specific surface area increased greatly from 2.787 m²/g to 80.512 m²/g. MNBs could improve the adsorption of both raw coal and SC under different pH levels, temperatures and dosages. With the use of MNBs, the adsorption capacity of SC reached 169.49 mg/g, which was much larger than that of the raw coal at 15.75 mg/g. The MNBs effectively reduced the adsorption time from 240 to 20 min. In addition, the MNBs could ensure the adsorbent maintained a good adsorption effect across a wide pH range. The removal rate was above 90% in an acidic environment and above 70% in an alkaline environment. MBs can effectively improve the rate of adsorption of pollutants by adsorbents. SC was obtained from low-rank coal through a rapid one-step heating treatment and was used as a kind of cheap adsorbent. The method is thus simple and easy to implement in the industrial context and has the potential for industrial promotion.

Bacterial diversity evolution process based on physicochemical characteristics of sludge treating hydroquinone during acclimation

Hydroquinone is one of the main pollutants in coal-gasification wastewater, which is biologically toxic and difficult to remove. The aerobic biodegradation rate, organic toxicity, and microbial community structure at different acclimation stages of degradation of hydroquinone by activated sludge were investigated. In each acclimation cycle, the removal of hydroquinone reached 100% after 5 days, indicating that high-concentration hydroquinone in the activated sludge could be completely biodegraded. When the microbial flora was inhibited by the influent hydroquinone, the enzyme system experienced stress conditions and led to the secretion of secondary metabolites, extracellular protein of 5-10 kDa mainly contributing to the sludge organic toxicity. Microbial diversity analysis showed that with the increase of the concentration of hydroquinone, β-Proteus bacteria such as Azoarcus and Dechloromonas gradually accumulated, which improved the removal of hydroquinone with aerobic activated sludge in the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system. As the inhibition degree exceeded the appropriate tolerance range of microorganisms, bacteria would secrete much more secondary metabolites, and the organic toxicity of sludge would reach a relatively high level.

Immobilized enzymes and cell systems: an approach to the removal of phenol and the challenges to incorporate nanoparticle-based technology

The presence of phenol in wastewater poses a risk to ecosystems and human health. The traditional processes to remove phenol from wastewater, although effective, have several drawbacks. The best alternative is the application of ecological biotechnology tools since they involve biological systems (enzymes and microorganisms) with moderate economic and environmental impact. However, these systems have a high sensitivity to environmental factors and high substrate concentrations that reduce their effectiveness in phenol removal. This can be overcome by immobilization-based technology to increase the performance of enzymes and bacteria. A key component to ensure successful immobilization is the material (polymeric matrices) used as support for the biological system. In addition, by incorporating magnetic nanoparticles into conventional immobilized systems, a low-cost process is achieved but, most importantly, the magnetically immobilized system can be recovered, recycled, and reused. In this review, we study the existing alternatives for treating wastewater with phenol, from physical and chemical to biological techniques. The latter focus on the immobilization of enzymes and microorganisms. The characteristics of the support materials that ensure the viability of the immobilization are compared. In addition, the challenges and opportunities that arise from incorporating magnetic nanoparticles in immobilized systems are addressed.

Study on the differences in sludge toxicity and microbial community structure caused by catechol, resorcinol and hydroquinone with metagenomic analysis

The aerobic biodegradation rate, organic toxicity and microbial community structure of activated sludge acclimated by catechol, resorcinol and hydroquinone were investigated, to study the relationship between microbial structure and sludge organic toxicity caused by phenolic compounds. At the stable operation stage, the degradation rates of the dihydroxy benzenes in a single sequencing batch reactor (SBR) cycle were followed the order: resorcinol (89.71%) > hydroquinone (85.64%) > catechol (59.62%). Sludge toxicity bioassay indicated that the toxicity of sludge was catechol (45.63%) > hydroquinone (40.28%) > resorcinol (38.15%). The accumulation of secondary metabolites such as 5-10 kDa tryptophan and tyrosine protein substances caused the differential sludge toxicity. Microbial metagenomic analysis showed that the toxicity of sludge was significantly related to the microbial community structure. Thauera, Azoarcus, Pseudomonas and other Proteobacteria formed in the sludge during acclimation. Catechol group had the least dominant bacteria and loop ring opening enzyme genes (catA, dmpB, dxnF, hapD) numbers. Therefore, the degradation of catechol was the most difficult than resorcinol and hydroquinone, resulting the highest sludge toxicity.

Effects of temperature, oxygen and steam on pore structure characteristics of coconut husk activated carbon powders prepared by one-step rapid pyrolysis activation process

Activated carbon powders made from coconut husk (CHCs) were prepared by one-step rapid pyrolysis activation process. Effects of temperature, oxygen and steam on the pore structure of CHCs were investigated. Results showed that high temperature, oxygen and steam all motivated the development of the CHCs pore structure. High temperature accelerated the evaporation of volatiles and led to more micropore structures. Oxygen promoted the development of both micropores and mesopores. CHCs' porosity separately presented a linear and a logarithmic growth with the increase of the preparation temperature and oxygen content. CHCs prepared under 1000 ℃ with activation agents of 6% oxygen and 20% steam exhibited the largest specific surface area and total pore volume of 415.85 m²/g and 0.1748 cm³/g. Steam can diffuse into the CHC matrix and enhance the formation of more mesopores. Steam over 20% would over-burn the substance and lead to the collapse of some pore structures.

Partial oxidation of phenol in supercritical water with NaOH and H2O2: Hydrogen production and polymer formation

The catalytic supercritical water partial oxidation of phenol using H₂O₂ as oxidant in the presence of NaOH was explored to enhance hydrogen production and inhibit phenol polymerization. The results indicated that H₂ production was enhanced in the presence of NaOH when phenol supercritical water oxidation was controlled at a lower O/C ratio. Compared with the individual catalytic partial oxidation of phenol, the reaction with NaOH and H₂O₂ simultaneously enhanced H₂ production and inhibited polycyclic polymer generation at O/C ratios below 0.5. A peak hydrogen gasification efficiency value of 62.35% was observed at an O/C ratio of 0.3 with 1.0 wt% NaOH, and a phenol removal efficiency of nearly 75% was reported. Phenol polymerization was effectively inhibited for reaction times limited to 50 s. Moreover, other phenol reaction pathways reported in the literature were compared with the partial oxidation of phenol in supercritical water with NaOH and H₂O₂.

Hazardous waste treatment technologies

This is a review of the literature published in 2018 on topics related to hazardous waste management in water, soils, sediments, and air. The review covers treatment technologies applying physical, chemical, and biological principles for contaminated water, soils, sediments, and air. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The management of waters, wastewaters, and soils contaminated by various hazardous chemicals including inorganic (e.g., oxyanions, salts, and heavy metals), organic (e.g., halogenated, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, pesticides, and persistent organic chemicals) was reviewed according to the technology applied, namely, physical, chemical and biological methods. Physical methods for the management of hazardous wastes including adsorption, coagulation (conventional and electrochemical), sand filtration, electrosorption (or CDI), electrodialysis, electrokinetics, membrane (RO, NF, MF), photocatalysis, photoelectrochemical oxidation, sonochemical, non-thermal plasma, supercritical fluid, electrochemical oxidation, and electrochemical reduction processes were reviewed. Chemical methods including ozone-based, hydrogen peroxide-based, persulfate-based, Fenton and Fenton-like, and potassium permanganate processes for the management of hazardous were reviewed. Biological methods such as aerobic, anaerobic, bioreactor, constructed wetlands, soil bioremediation and biofilter processes for the management of hazardous wastes, in mode of consortium and pure culture were reviewed.

Polymerization and oxidation of phenols in supercritical water

The treatment of toxic and difficult-to-degrade phenolic compounds has become a key issue in the coking, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Considering the polymerization and oxidation of phenolic compounds in supercritical water partial oxidation/supercritical water oxidation (SCWPO/SCWO), the present study reviewed the removal efficiency and reaction pathway of phenolic compounds and phenolic waste/wastewater under different reaction conditions. Temperature is the dominant factor affecting the SCWO reaction. When the oxidizing ability is insufficient, the organics polymerize to form phenolic compounds. The gradual increase of oxidant equivalent causes the intermediate product to gradually oxidize to CO₂ and H₂O completely. Finally, the free radical reaction mechanism is considered to be a typical SCWO reaction mechanism.

Synergistic degradation on phenolic compounds of coal pyrolysis wastewater (CPW) by lignite activated coke-active sludge (LAC-AS) process: Insights into succession of microbial community under selective pressure

This study illustrated synergistic degradation of phenolic compounds by LAC-AS process via the insight into succession of microbial community under selective pressure. The results demonstrated that high phenols exhibited toxicity pressure to single AS process by eliminating non-tolerate bacteria, inducing vicious circulation by intermediates (catechol, nitrate, etc.) accumulation. However, LAC exerted another selective pressure and facilitated positive bio-community succession of moving biological bed reactor (MBBR). Firstly, it created rich microenvironments for diverse bacteria and promoted resilient adsorption for phenols with the assistance of biodegradation. Secondly, LAC enriched facultative bacteria, which developed multiple degradation paths on phenols and nitrogen based on multifunctional genes, counteracting the toxicity pressure. Specifically, phenols were degraded by the combination of anaerobic hydrolysis and oxidation, while conventional and shortcut nitrification-denitrification (SND) and nitrogen fixation all participated in nitrogen removal, achieving high removal of COD (93.49%), Tph (93.74%), TN (92.20%) and NH₄⁺-N (93.20%) under the highest phenols.
