Enhancement of sugar production from coconut husk based on the impact of the combination of surfactant-assisted subcritical water and enzymatic hydrolysis

Combined iron (III) chloride/sodium citrate with enzymatic hydrolysis for xylo-oligosaccharides and monosaccharides production from poplar

Currently, the production of xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) from lignocelluloses by chelating system hydrolysis has not been investigated. Herein, iron (III) chloride/sodium citrate (IC/SC) chelating system hydrolysis and xylanase hydrolysis were used to produce XOS from poplar. Then, the delignification of IC/SC-hydrolyzed poplar was performed by p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) pretreatment to increase the accessibility of cellulase. The results demonstrated that 42.3% of XOS with an extremely low by-product (xylose/XOS = 0.11) was produced from poplar by 50 mM IC/SC hydrolysis (molar ratio of 1:1, 170 °C, 60 min) and xylanase hydrolysis. The second step IC/SC hydrolysis and xylanase hydrolysis of poplar increased the yield of XOS to 51.3%. Finally, the glucose yield of p-TsOH-pretreated poplar (60% p-TsOH, 70 °C, 30 min) was greatly increased from 37.5% to 83.8% by cellulase hydrolysis with Tween 80 addition. The novel strategy proposed in this work was feasible for XOS and monosaccharides production from poplar.

Subcritical Water Process for Reducing Sugar Production from Biomass: Optimization and Kinetics

The competitive reactions of lignocellulose hydrolysis and monosaccharide degradation in the subcritical water (SCW) hydrolysis of coconut husk were investigated to optimize the reducing sugar yield. Optimization analysis was performed by response surface methodology (RSM) and kinetics studies. Parameters of process optimization were varied at 130-170 °C for 15-45 min. The reducing sugars were measured using the Dinitro salicylic acid method. The sugar yield increased when the temperature increased from 130 °C to 170 °C. The highest reduction sugar yield of 4.946 g/L was obtained at 183.6 °C for 4.8 min and 23.4 liquid/solid ratio (LSR). Kinetics studies were carried out at temperature variations of 150, 170, and 190 °C and pressures of 60, 80, and 100 bar for 5 to 60 min. The yield of reducing sugar decreased with increasing temperature. The kinetic model 2B is the best method to explain the competitive reaction kinetics of coconut husk hydrolysis. Optimization of Microwave-Assisted Alkali Pretreatment for Enhancement of Delignification Process of Cocoa Pod Husk

In this study, the optimization of microwave-assisted alkaline (MAA) pretreatment is performed to attain the optimal operating parameters for the delignification of cocoa pod husk (CPH). The MAA performance was examined by heating the CPH solid with different particle sizes (60–120 mesh) and NaOH solution with a different sample to a solvent (SS) ratio (0.02–0.05 g/L), for short irradiation time (1–4 min). Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was utilized to optimize the percentage of lignocellulose composition changes. The results show that by enlarging particle size, the content of lignin and cellulose decreased while hemicellulose increased. By prolong irradiation time, the content of lignin and hemicellulose decreased while cellulose elevated. On the other hand, increasing the SS ratio was not significant for hemicellulose content changes. From FTIR and SEM characterization, the MAA drove the removal of lignin and hemicellulose of CPH and increased cellulose slightly. Supported by kinetic study which conducted in this work, it was exhibited that MAA pretreatment technology is an effective delignification method of CPH which can tackle the bottleneck of its commercial biofuel production. Effect of Severity Factor on the Subcritical Water and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Coconut Husk for Reducing Sugar Production

Preventing the further degradation of monomeric or oligomeric sugar into by-product during biomass conversion is one of the challenges for fermentable sugar production. In this study, the performance of subcritical water (SCW) and enzymatic hydrolysis of coconut husk toward reducing sugar production was investigated using a severity factor (SF) approach. Furthermore, the optimal condition of SCW was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), where the composition changes of lignocellulose and sugar yield as responses. From the results, at low SF of SCW, sugar yield escalated as increasing SF value. In the enzymatic hydrolysis process, the effect of SCW pressure is a significant factor enhancing sugar yield. A maximum total sugar yield was attained on the mild SF condition of 2.86. From this work, it was known that the SF approach is sufficient parameter to evaluate the SCW and enzymatic hydrolysis of coconut husk. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Synergism of organic acid and deep eutectic solvents pretreatment for the co-production of oligosaccharides and enhancing enzymatic saccharification

A novel pretreatment using organic acid synergism with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was developed to the co-production of oligosaccharides, especially for the functional oligosaccharides, and enhancement of corn straws enzymatic saccharification. It was found that lactic acid (Lac) pretreatment combined with choline chloride/Lac system could not only selectively convert the hemicellulose to xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS), which account for 89.7% of total xylose in prehydrolysate (the functional XOS (DP < 5) took up about 35%), but also significantly promote the glucose release (33.2 g/100 g material) and well lignin separation (representing 40.9% in whole process), which better than the single organic pretreatment at higher modified severity index (SI). Structural features of various solids were characterized to better comprehend how hemicellulose and lignin removal influenced enzymatic hydrolysis. This work offered the mild and potential method to co-produce fermentable sugars with the effective separation and valorization of lignin.

The byproduct-organic acids strengthened pretreatment of cassava straw: Optimization and kinetic study

The subcritical liquid hot water (SLHW) pretreatment could be strengthened by its byproduct-organic acids, such as acetic acid (AA), lactic acid (LA) and formic acid (FA). The effects of these three acids on the pretreatment were investigated by the yield of fermentable sugars. The results showed that the addition of acids could effectively catalyze the hydrolysis of hemicellulose to C5 sugars and contribute to the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. It was found that all three organic acids promote xylose production, and the copresence of AA + LA could limit the content of the fermentation inhibitor. The optimum proportion of three organic acids were 0.33 wt%AA + 0.45 wt%LA + 0.20 wt%FA, and the yield of C5 sugars after pretreatment and C6 sugar after enzymatic hydrolysis were 89.06% and 78.56%, respectively. The kinetic studies proved that byproduct-organic acids could promote xylose production and inhibit its further degradation and explained that xylose would accumulate at lower temperatures.
