Abstract
The global population is increasing, with a predicted demand for 1250 million tonnes of animal-derived protein by 2050, which will be difficult to meet. Single-cell protein (SCP) offers a sustainable solution. This review covers SCP production mechanisms, microbial and substrate choices, and advancements in metabolic engineering and CRISPR-Cas. It emphasizes second-generation substrates and fermentation for a circular economy. Despite challenges like high nucleic acid content, SCP promises to solve the global nutrition problem.

Abstract
Single cell protein (SCP, or microbial protein) is one of the emerging alternative protein sources to address the global challenge of food insecurity. Recently, the SCP produced from methane has attracted substantial attention since methane is a renewable resource attainable from anaerobic digestion. However, the supply of methane, an insoluble gas in water, is one of the major challenges in producing methane-based SCP. This work developed a novel bioreactor configuration, in which hollow fiber membrane was used for efficient methane supply while microorganisms were growing in the suspended form favourable for the biomass harvest. Over a 312-day operation, the impacts of three critical parameters on the SCP production were investigated, including the ratio of methane loading to ammonium loading, the ratio of methane loading to oxygen loading, and the sludge retention time (SRT). Under the condition of 4 g CH4/g NH4+, 4 g O2/g CH4, and SRT of 4 days, the highest SCP production yield was observed and determined to be 1.36 g SCP/g CH4 and 5.05 g SCP/g N, respectively. The protein content was up to 67 %, which is higher than the majority of reported values to date. Moreover, the methane and ammonium utilization efficiencies were both close to 100 %, suggesting the highly efficient utilization of substrates in this new bioreactor configuration. A high relative abundance of essential amino acids (EAA) above 42 % was achieved, representing the highest EAA content reported. These findings provide valuable insights into SCP production using methane as a feedstock.

Abstract
Microorganisms are a promising means to address many societal sustainability challenges owing to their ability to thrive in diverse environments and interface with the microscale chemical world via diverse metabolic capacities. Synthetic biology can engineer microorganisms by rewiring their regulatory networks or introducing new functionalities, enhancing their utility for target applications. In this Review, we provide a broad, high-level overview of various research efforts addressing sustainability challenges through synthetic biology, emphasizing foundational microbiological research questions that can accelerate the development of these efforts. We introduce an organizational framework that categorizes these efforts along three domains - factory, farm and field - that are defined by the extent to which the engineered microorganisms interface with the natural external environment. Different application areas within the same domain share many fundamental challenges, highlighting productive opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations between researchers working in historically disparate fields.

Abstract
The food insecurity due to a vertical increase in the global population urgently demands substantial advancements in the agricultural sector and to identify sustainable affordable sources of nutrition, particularly proteins. Single-cell protein (SCP) has been revealed as the dried biomass of microorganisms such as algae, yeast, and bacteria cultivated in a controlled environment. Production of SCP is a promising alternative to conventional protein sources like soy and meat, due to quicker production, minimal land requirement, and flexibility to various climatic conditions. In addition to protein production, it also contributes to waste management by converting it into food and feed for both human and animal consumption. This article provides an overview of SCP production, including its benefits, safety, acceptability, and cost, as well as limitations that constrains its maximum use. Furthermore, this review criticizes the downstream processing of SCP, encompassing cell wall disruption, removal of nucleic acid, harvesting of biomass, drying, packaging, storage, and transportation. The potential applications of SCP, such as in food and feed as well as in the production of bioplastics, emulsifiers, and as flavoring agents for baked food, soup, and salad, are also discussed.

Abstract
Single cell protein (SCP) has emerged as an alternative protein source, potentially based on the recovery of carbon and nutrients from waste-derived resources as part of the circular economy. From those resources, gaseous substrates have the advantage of an easy sterilization, allowing the production of pathogen-free SCP. Sterile gaseous substrates allow producing pathogen-free SCP. This study evaluated the use of an enriched phototrophic purple bacteria (PPB) consortium for SCP production using H2 and CO2 as electron and C sources. The influence of pH (6.0-8.5), temperature (15-50 °C) and light intensity (0-50 W·m-2) on the growth kinetics and biomass yields was investigated using batch tests. Optimal conditions were found at pH 7, 25 °C and light intensities over 30 W·m-2. High biomass and protein yields were achieved (~ 1 g CODbiomass·g CODH2consumed-1 and 3.9-4.4 g protein·g H2-1) regardless of the environmental conditions, being amongst the highest values reported from gaseous streams. These high yields were obtained thanks to the use of light as a sole energy source by the PPB consortium, allowing a total utilization of H2 for growth. Hydrogen uptake rates varied considerably, with values up to 61 ± 5 mg COD·d-1 for the overall H2 consumption rates and 2.00 ± 0.14 g COD·g COD-1·d-1 for the maximum specific uptake rates under optimal growth conditions. The latter value was estimated using a mechanistic model able to represent PPB growth on H2. The biomass exhibited high protein contents (>50 % w/w) and adequate amino acid profiles, showing its suitability as SCP for feed. PPB were the dominant bacteria during the experiments (relative abundance over 80 % in most tests), with a stable population dominated by Rhodobacter sp. and Rhodopseudomonas sp. This study demonstrates the potential of enriched PPB cultures for H2 bioconversion into SCP.

Abstract
Awareness is growing that human health cannot be considered in isolation but is inextricably woven with the health of the environment in which we live. It is, however, under-recognized that the sustainability of human activities strongly relies on preserving the equilibrium of the microbial communities living in/on/around us. Microbial metabolic activities are instrumental for production, functionalization, processing, and preservation of food. For circular economy, microbial metabolism would be exploited to produce building blocks for the chemical industry, to achieve effective crop protection, agri-food waste revalorization, or biofuel production, as well as in bioremediation and bioaugmentation of contaminated areas. Low pH is undoubtedly a key physical-chemical parameter that needs to be considered for exploiting the powerful microbial metabolic arsenal. Deviation from optimal pH conditions has profound effects on shaping the microbial communities responsible for carrying out essential processes. Furthermore, novel strategies to combat contaminations and infections by pathogens rely on microbial-derived acidic molecules that suppress/inhibit their growth. Herein, we present the state-of-the-art of the knowledge on the impact of acidic pH in many applied areas and how this knowledge can guide us to use the immense arsenal of microbial metabolic activities for their more impactful exploitation in a Planetary Health perspective.

Abstract
The consistent population growth is directly tied to the annual rise in livestock production, placing a substantial burden on the crop sector that supplies animal feed. The Danish government has been relying on importing soybeans and soybean meal to be used as animal feed. However, this sparked environmental concerns that require more environmentally friendly solutions, such as self-sufficiency in animal feed production. The rise of green biorefineries allows new avenues of animal proteinaceous feed production using green biomass to produce leaf protein concentrate (LPC) and utilize side-stream products, such as brown juice and press cake, for feed-quality products. This study evaluated the combination of grass-clover biorefinery and the power-to-X concept, including power-to-protein technology, for its environmental sustainability through a consequential life cycle assessment (CLCA). The production of protein concentrate from organic grass clover exhibits optimal environmental performance when press cake and brown juice are used for bioenergy recovery. The findings indicate that combining a green biorefinery with power-to-protein to fully valorize the carbon and nitrogen content of brown juice and press cake into feed-grade protein can increase the environmental benefits. Such an integration resulted in an avoided impact of -995.9 kg CO2-eq/tonne of protein concentrate. The avoided impacts of climate change could be higher within the first 20 years due to a higher carbon sequestration rate. However, even after 20 years when a new carbon balance in the soil is reached, the environmental gain could be big enough to encourage the production and use of organic grass-clover protein concentrate.

Abstract
The accumulation of a large amount of organic solid waste and the lack of sufficient protein supply worldwide are two major challenges caused by rapid population growth. Anaerobic digestion is the main force of organic waste treatment, and the high-value utilization of its products (biogas and digestate) has been widely concerned. These products can be used as nutrients and energy sources for microorganisms such as microalgae, yeast, methane-oxidizing bacteria(MOB), and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria(HOB) to produce single cell protein(SCP), which contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals. This new model of energy conversion can construct a bioeconomic cycle from waste to nutritional products, which treats waste without additional carbon emissions and can harvest high-value biomass. Techno-economic analysis shows that the SCP from biogas and digestate has higher profit than biogas electricity generation, and its production cost is lower than the SCP using special raw materials as the substrate. In this review, the case of SCP-rich microorganisms using anaerobic digestion products for growth was investigated. Some of the challenges faced by the process and the latest developments were analyzed, and their potential economic and environmental value was verified.

Abstract
Finding new and sustainable proteinaceous feed ingredients, especially those produced from locally available resources, is at the top of the agenda of many countries, including Denmark, to become feed protein self-sufficient. Protein concentrate (PC) production via the biorefining of green biomass has attracted considerable interest in recent years since they are more land efficient and productive than soybeans. The biorefining of clover-grass into protein concentrate (GPC) is a promising substitute for soybean and soybean meal, however, the environmental impacts of GPC have not been studied. The Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method, developed by EU Joint Research Centre for the "Single Market for Green Products Initiative" was employed to assess the environmental footprints of organic GPC. The instructions, methodology, and guidelines detailed in Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) Feed for Food-Producing Animals were followed to implement this PEF study. The results were intended for in-house management, process improvement, early guidance on the environmental footprint (EF) of compound feeds containing GPC, and the EF of livestock and animal production whose feed ration contains GPC. Our results showed that GPC would have a climate change impact of 1091.47 kg CO2,eq/t GPC. We found that farming/cultivation, more specifically direct emissions from manure slurry, dominated most impact categories, including acidification and eutrophication. The results were found sensitive to the choice of allocation method and very case-specific. For instance, the climate change impact of GPC was higher under economic allocation than direct substation, but the acidification impact was lower in economic allocation than direct substitution. However, the direct substitution method, showed that treating the process residues in biogas plants could result in GPC with lower EFs. The sensitivity analysis confirmed that increasing the clover-grass productivity and decreasing either manure slurry application or nitrogenous emissions from its application are the keys to further decreasing the overall environmental impacts.

Abstract
This study evaluated the possibility of combining methane oxidizing bacteria (MOB) with sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB) to enable the utilization of sulfide-rich biogas for microbial protein production. For this purpose, a MOB-SOB mixed-culture enriched by feeding both methane and sulfide was benchmarked against an enrichment of solely MOB. Different CH4:O2 ratios, starting pH values, sulfide levels and nitrogen sources were tested and evaluated for the two enrichments. The MOB-SOB culture gave promising results in terms of both biomass yield (up to 0.07±0.01 g VSS/g CH4-COD) and protein content (up to 73±5% of VSS) at 1500 ppm of equivalent H2S. The latter enrichment was able to grow also under acidic pH (5.8-7.0), but as inhibited outside the optimal CH4:O2 ratio of 2:3. The obtained results show the capability of MOB-SOB mixed-cultures to directly upcycle sulfide-rich biogas into microbial protein potentially suited for feed, food or biobased product applications.

Abstract
In search of the candidate for animal feed and clean energy, a new vision of algal biorefinery was firstly proposed to coproduce amino acids and biohythane via hydrothermal treatment and two-stage anaerobic fermentation. This study focused on the comprehensive analysis of amino acids recovered from Chlorella sp. and the subsequent biohythane production from microalgal residues. The content and recovery rate of amino acids were in the range of 2.07-27.62 g/100 g and 3.65 %-48.66 % with increasing temperature due to more cell wall disruptions. Furthermore, it was rich in essential amino acids for livestock, including leucine, arginine, isoleucine, valine and phenylalanine. A comparable hydrogen production (9 mL/g volatile solids (VS)) was reached at 70 °C and 90 °C, while it reduced to 5.84 mL/gVS at 150 °C. The group at 70 °C got the maximum methane generation of 311.9 mL/gVS, which was 16.67 %, 24.94 %, 38.38 % and 46.49 % higher than that of other groups. Microalgal residues at lower temperature contained more organics, which was the reason for the better biohythane production. The coproduction of amino acids and biohythane at 130 °C was favorable, which led to 43.71 % amino acids recovery and 93.82 mL biohythane production from per gVS of Chlorella sp. The improved microalgal biorefinery could provide an alternative way to mitigate the crisis of food and energy, but animal experimentations and techno-economic assessments should be considered for further study.

Abstract
Securing a sustainable protein supply at the global level is among the greatest challenges currently faced by humanity. Alternative protein sources, such as second-generation microbial protein (MP), could give rise to innovative circular bioeconomy practices, synthesizing high-value bioproducts through the recovery and upcycling of resources from overabundant biowastes and residues. Within such a multi-feedstock biorefinery scenario, the wide range of microbial pathways and networks that characterize mixed microbial cultures, offers interesting and not yet fully explored advantages over conventional monoculture-based processes. In this review, we combine a comprehensive analysis of waste recovery platforms for second-generation MP production with a critical evaluation of the research gaps and potentials offered by mixed culture-based MP fermentation processes.

Abstract
The safe and robust yeast Candida utilis was employed for nitrogen recovery as single cell protein from biogas slurry. The maximum biomass of 6.2 g/L with protein content of 53.5% was produced in batch cultivation with glucose as the carbon source, C/N ratio of 3:1, NH4+-N concentration of 3000 mg/L, initial pH of 8.0, and the addition of 0.35% (w/v) Na2HPO4. It was speculated that C. utilis can grow well with free ammonia below 197 mg/L. In fed-batch fermentation, a biomass of 14.8 g/L was obtained, and the maintenance of aerobic conditions was critical to improving the production of single cell protein. The sterilized and non-sterilized biogas slurry can be used as an effective pH regulator. The obtained single cell protein was a nutritious, safe, and reliable protein source. This study provides novel insights into nitrogen recovery via C. utilis as a single cell protein from biogas slurry.

Abstract
Microbial proteins, i.e., single-cell proteins or microbial biomass, can be cultivated for food and animal feed due to their high protein content and the fact that they represent a rich source of carbohydrates, minerals, fats, vitamins, and amino acids. Another advantage of single-cell proteins is their rapid production due to the growth rate of microorganisms and the possibility of using agro-industrial waste, residues and by-products for production through this renewable technology. Agro-industrial residues and by-products represent materials obtained from various processes in agriculture and agriculture-related industries; taking into account their composition and characteristics, as well as vast amounts, they have an enormous potential to generate sustainable bioproducts, such as microbial proteins. This review aims to summarize contemporary scientific research related to the production of microbial proteins on various agro-industrial residues and by-products, as well as to emphasize the current state of production of single-cell proteins and the importance of their production to ease the food crisis and support sustainable development.

Abstract
Microbial protein is a promising dietary supplement alternative to traditional sources, being methane oxidising bacteria (MOB) an attractive option to produce it. Though current production processes rely on fossil resources, there is an increasing trend of using recovered residual nutrient streams, with most research focusing on nitrogen and methane, paying little attention to phosphorus. Struvite and precipitated calcium phosphate (PCP) were evaluated as potential residual P sources for microbial protein production after dissolved them with strong acids. MOB growth was studied in batch experiments. Yields ranged from 0.21 to 0.29 g CDW g CH4-1. Crude protein contents above 50% of dried weight were achieved, and neither the P nor the N source affected the amino acid profile significantly. The highest protein content (75%) was observed when using struvite as nutrient source, but also yielded cadmium and lead accumulation above limits set in legislation.

Abstract
The constant increment in the world's population leads to a parallel increase in the demand for food. This situation gives place the need for urgent development of alternative and sustainable resources to satisfy this nutritional requirement. Human nutrition is currently based on fisheries, which accounts for 50% of the fish production for human consumption, but also on agriculture, livestock, and aquaculture. Among them, aquaculture has been pointed out as a promising source of animal protein that can provide the population with high-quality protein food. This productive model has also gained attention due to its fast development. However, several aquaculture species require considerable amounts of fish protein to reach optimal growth rates, which represents its main drawback. Aquaculture needs to become sustainable using renewable source of nutrients with high contents of proteins to ensure properly fed animals. To achieve this goal, different approaches have been considered. In this sense, single-cell protein (SCP) products are a promising solution to replace fish protein from fishmeal. SCP flours based on microbes or algae biomass can be sustainably obtained. These microorganisms can be cultured by using residues supplied by other industries such as agriculture, food, or urban areas. Hence, the application of SCP for developing innovative fish meal offers a double solution by reducing the management of residues and by providing a sustainable source of proteins to aquaculture. However, the use of SCP as aquaculture feed also has some limitations, such as problems of digestibility, presence of toxins, or difficulty to scale-up the production process. In this work, we review the potential sources of SCP, their respective production processes, and their implementation in circular economy strategies, through the revalorization and exploitation of different residues for aquaculture feeding purposes. The data analyzed show the positive effects of SCP inclusion in diets and point to SCP meals as a sustainable feed system. However, new processes need to be exploited to improve yield. In that direction, the circular economy is a potential alternative to produce SCP at any time of the year and from various cost-free substrates, almost without a negative impact.

Abstract
The looming climate and energy crises, exacerbated by increased waste generation, are driving research and development of sustainable resource management systems. Research suggests that organic materials, such as food waste, grass, and manure, have potential for biotransformation into a range of products, including: high-value volatile fatty acids (VFAs); various carboxylic acids; bioenergy; and bioplastics. Valorizing these organic residues would additionally reduce the increasing burden on waste management systems. Here, we review the valorization potential of various sustainably sourced feedstocks, particularly food wastes and agricultural and animal residues. Such feedstocks are often micro-organism-rich and well-suited to mixed culture fermentations. Additionally, we touch on the technologies, mainly biological systems including anaerobic digestion, that are being developed for this purpose. In particular, we provide a synthesis of VFA recovery techniques, which remain a significant technological barrier. Furthermore, we highlight a range of challenges and opportunities which will continue to drive research and discovery within the field. Analysis of the literature reveals growing interest in the development of a circular bioeconomy, built upon a biorefinery framework, which utilizes biogenic VFAs for chemical, material, and energy applications.

The environmental impact of the dairy industry is heavily influenced by the overproduction of nitrogen- and carbon-rich effluents. The present study proposes an innovative process to recover waste contaminated nitrogen from anaerobic digestate while treating excess cheese whey (CW) and producing high-quality, clean single cell protein (SCP). By relying on direct aeration stripping techniques, employing an airflow subsequently used in the aerobic cheese whey fermentation step, the investigated process was able to strip 41-80% of the total ammonium nitrogen (N-NH4+) from liquid digestate. The stripped ammonia gas (NH3) was completely recovered as N-NH4+ in the acidic CW, and further upcycled into SCP having a total protein content of 74.7% and a balanced amino acids profile. A preliminary techno-economic analysis revealed the potential to directly recover and upcycle nitrogen into SCP at costs (4.3-6.3 €·kgN-1) and energetic inputs (90-132 MJ·kgN-1) matching those of conventional feed and nitrogen management processes.

Abstract
Global catastrophes such as a supervolcanic eruption, asteroid impact, or nuclear winter could cause global agricultural collapse due to reduced sunlight reaching the Earth's surface. The human civilization's food production system is unprepared to respond to such events, but methane single cell protein (SCP) could be a key part of the solution. Current preparedness centers around food stockpiling, an excessively expensive solution given that an abrupt sunlight reduction scenario (ASRS) could hamper conventional agriculture for 5-10 years. Instead, it is more cost-effective to consider resilient food production techniques requiring little to no sunlight. This study analyses the potential of SCP produced from methane (natural gas and biogas) as a resilient food source for global catastrophic food shocks from ASRS. The following are quantified: global production potential of methane SCP, capital costs, material and energy requirements, ramp-up rates, and retail prices. In addition, potential bottlenecks for fast deployment are considered. While providing a more valuable, protein-rich product than its alternatives, the production capacity could be slower to ramp up. Based on 24/7 construction of facilities, 7%-11% of the global protein requirements could be fulfilled at the end of the first year. Despite significant remaining uncertainties, methane SCP shows significant potential to prevent global protein starvation during an ASRS at an affordable price-US$3-5/kg dry.

Abstract
Global shift to sustainability has driven the exploration of alternative feedstocks beyond sugars for biomanufacturing. Recently, C1 (CO2, CO, methane, formate and methanol) and C2 (acetate and ethanol) substrates are drawing great attention due to their natural abundance and low production cost. The advances in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology and industrial process design have greatly enhanced the efficiency that microbes use these next-generation feedstocks. The metabolic pathways to use C1 and C2 feedstocks have been introduced or enhanced into industrial workhorses, such as Escherichia coli and yeasts, by genetic rewiring and laboratory evolution strategies. Furthermore, microbes are engineered to convert these low-cost feedstocks to various high-value products, ranging from food ingredients to chemicals. This review highlights the recent development in metabolic engineering, the challenges in strain engineering and bioprocess design, and the perspectives of microbial utilization of C1 and C2 feedstocks for the biomanufacturing of value-added products.

Abstract
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) have extensive energy processes that undermine their economic and environmental performance. In this context, the integration of wastewater treatment with other biochemical processes such as co-digestion of sludge with organic wastes, and production of value-added products at their downstream processes will shift conventional WWTPs into biorefinery platforms with better sustainability performance. The sustainability of such a biorefinery platform has been investigated herein using an economic and life cycle assessment approach. This WWTP-based biorefinery treats wastewater from Copenhagen municipality, co-digests the source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste and sludge, and upgrades biogas into biomethane using a hydrogen-assisted upgrading method. Apart from bioenergy, this biorefinery also produces microbial protein (MP) using recovered nutrients from WWTP's reject water. The net environmental savings achieved in two damage categories, i.e., -1.07 × 10-2 species.yr/FU in ecosystem quality and -1.68 × 106 USD/FU in resource scarcity damage categories along with high potential windows for the further environmental profile improvements make this biorefinery platform so encouraging. Despite being promising in terms of environmental performance, the high capital expenditure and low gross profit have undermined the economic performance of the proposed biorefinery. Technological improvements, process optimization, and encouraging incentives/subsidies are still needed to make this platform economically feasible.

Abstract
Municipal organic waste (biowaste) consists of food derived starch, protein and sugars, and lignocellulose derived cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and pectin. Proper management enables nutrient recycling and sustainable production of platform chemicals such as lactic acid (LA). This review gathers the most important information regarding use of biowaste for LA fermentation covering pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation and downstream processing to achieve high purity LA. The optimal approach was found to treat the two biowaste fractions separately due to different pre-treatment and enzyme needs for achieving enzymatic hydrolysis and to do continues fermentation to achieve high cell density and high LA productivity up to 12 g/L/h for production of both L and D isomers. The specific productivity was 0.4 to 0.5 h-1 but with recalcitrant biomass, the enzymatic hydrolysis was rate limiting. Novel purification approaches included reactive distillation and emulsion liquid membrane separation yielding purities sufficient for polylactic acid production.

Abstract
Methane is an abundant and low-cost gas with high global warming potential and its use as a feedstock can help mitigate climate change. Variety of valuable products can be produced from methane by methanotrophs in gas fermentation processes. By using methane as a sole carbon source, methanotrophic bacteria can produce bioplastics, biofuels, feed additives, ectoine and variety of other high-value chemical compounds. A lot of studies have been conducted through the years for natural methanotrophs and engineered strains as well as methanotrophic consortia. These have focused on increasing yields of native products as well as proof of concept for the synthesis of new range of chemicals by metabolic engineering. This review shows trends in the research on key methanotrophic bioproducts since 2015. Despite certain limitations of the known production strategies that makes commercialization of methane-based products challenging, there is currently much attention placed on the promising further development.

Abstract
Residual biomass is acknowledged as a key sustainable feedstock for the transition towards circular and low fossil carbon economies to supply whether energy, chemical, material and food products or services. The latter is receiving increasing attention, in particular in the perspective of decoupling nutrition from arable land demand. In order to provide a comprehensive overview of the technical possibilities to convert residual biomasses into edible ingredients, we reviewed over 950 scientific and industrial records documenting existing and emerging waste-to-nutrition pathways, involving over 150 different feedstocks here grouped under 10 umbrella categories: (i) wood-related residual biomass, (ii) primary crop residues, (iii) manure, (iv) food waste, (v) sludge and wastewater, (vi) green residual biomass, (vii) slaughterhouse by-products, (viii) agrifood co-products, (ix) C1 gases and (x) others. The review includes a detailed description of these pathways, as well as the processes they involve. As a result, we proposed four generic building blocks to systematize waste-to-nutrition conversion sequence patterns, namely enhancement, cracking, extraction and bioconversion. We further introduce a multidimensional representation of the biomasses suitability as potential as nutritional sources according to (i) their content in anti-nutritional compounds, (ii) their degree of structural complexity and (iii) their concentration of macro- and micronutrients. Finally, we suggest that the different pathways can be grouped into eight large families of approaches: (i) insect biorefinery, (ii) green biorefinery, (iii) lignocellulosic biorefinery, (iv) non-soluble protein recovery, (v) gas-intermediate biorefinery, (vi) liquid substrate alternative, (vii) solid-substrate fermentation and (viii) more-out-of-slaughterhouse by-products. The proposed framework aims to support future research in waste recovery and valorization within food systems, along with stimulating reflections on the improvement of resources' cascading use.

Abstract
Increasing efforts are directed towards the development of sustainable alternative protein sources among which microbial protein (MP) is one of the most promising. Especially when waste streams are used as substrates, the case for MP could become environmentally favorable. The risks of using organic waste streams for MP production-the presence of pathogens or toxicants-can be mitigated by their anaerobic digestion and subsequent aerobic assimilation of the (filter-sterilized) biogas. Even though methane and hydrogen oxidizing bacteria (MOB and HOB) have been intensively studied for MP production, the potential benefits of their co-cultivation remain elusive. Here, we isolated a diverse group of novel HOB (that were capable of autotrophic metabolism), and co-cultured them with a defined set of MOB, which could be grown on a mixture of biogas and H2/O2. The combination of MOB and HOB, apart from the CH4 and CO2 contained in biogas, can also enable the valorization of the CO2 that results from the oxidation of methane by the MOB. Different MOB and HOB combinations were grown in serum vials to identify the best-performing ones. We observed synergistic effects on growth for several combinations, and in all combinations a co-culture consisting out of both HOB and MOB could be maintained during five days of cultivation. Relative to the axenic growth, five out of the ten co-cultures exhibited 1.1-3.8 times higher protein concentration and two combinations presented 2.4-6.1 times higher essential amino acid content. The MP produced in this study generally contained lower amounts of the essential amino acids histidine, lysine and threonine, compared to tofu and fishmeal. The most promising combination in terms of protein concentration and essential amino acid profile was Methyloparacoccus murrelli LMG 27482 with Cupriavidus necator LMG 1201. Microbial protein from M. murrelli and C. necator requires 27-67% less quantity than chicken, whole egg and tofu, while it only requires 15% more quantity than the amino acid-dense soybean to cover the needs of an average adult. In conclusion, while limitations still exist, the co-cultivation of MOB and HOB creates an alternative route for MP production leveraging safe and sustainably-produced gaseous substrates.

Abstract
Wastewater treatment plants have been traditionally developed for the aerobic degradation of effluent organic matter, and are associated with high energy consumption. The adoption of sustainable development targets favors the utilization of every available energy source, and the current work aims at the identification of biomethane potential from non-conventional sources derived from municipal wastewater treatment processes. Byproducts derived from the primary treatment process stage were collected from four sewage treatment plants in Greece with great variation in design capacity and servicing areas with wide human activities, affecting the quality of the influents and the corresponding primary wastes. The samples were characterized for the determination of their solids and fats content, as well as the concentration of leached organic matter and nutrients, and were subjected to anaerobic digestion treatment for the measurement of their biomethane production potential according to standardized procedures. All samples exhibited potential for biogas utilization, with screenings collected from a treatment plant receiving wastewater from an area with combined rural and agro-industrial activities presenting the highest potential. Nevertheless, these samples had a methanogens doubling time of around 1.3 days, while screenings from a high-capacity unit proved to have a methanogens doubling time of less than 1 day. On the other hand, floatings from grit chambers presented the smallest potential for energy utilization. Nevertheless, these wastes can be utilized for energy production, potentially in secondary sludge co-digestion units, converting a treatment plant from an energy demanding to a zero energy or even a power production process.

Abstract
The anaerobic digestion is a well-established process for the treatment of organic solid waste, pursuing its conversion into a methane rich gas destined to energy generation. Research has largely dealt with the enhancement of the overall bioconversion yields, providing several strategies to maximize the production of bio-methane from the anaerobic processing of a wide variety of substrates. Nevertheless, the valorization of the process effluents should be pursued as well, especially if the anaerobic digestion is regarded in the light of the circular economy principles. Aim of this work is in identifying the state of the art of the strategies to manage the digestate from the anaerobic processing of the organic fractions of municipal solid waste. Conventional approaches are described and novel solutions are figured out in order to highlight their potential scale up as well as to address future research perspectives.

Abstract
Global methane emissions have been steadily increasing over the past few decades, exerting a negative effect on the environment. Biogas from landfills and sewage treatment plants is the main anthropogenic source of methane. This makes methane bioconversion one of the priority areas of biotechnology. This process involves the production of biochemical compounds from non-food sources through microbiological synthesis. Methanotrophic bacteria are a promising tool for methane bioconversion due to their ability to use this greenhouse gas and to produce protein-rich biomass, as well as a broad range of useful organic compounds. Currently, methane is used not only to produce biomass and chemical compounds, but also to increase the efficiency of water and solid waste treatment. However, the use of gaseous substrates in biotechnological processes is associated with some difficulties. The low solubility of methane in water is one of the major problems. Different approaches have been involved to encounter these challenges, including different bioreactor and gas distribution designs, solid carriers and bulk sorbents, as well as varying air/oxygen supply, the ratio of volumetric flow rate of gas mixture to its consumption rate, etc. The aim of this review was to summarize the current data on different bioreactor designs and the aspects of their applications for methane bioconversion and wastewater treatment. The bioreactors used in these processes must meet a number of requirements such as low methane emission, improved gas exchange surface, and controlled substrate supply to the reaction zone.

Abstract
Single cell protein (SCP) provides an alternative protein source to partially replace the conventional agricultural resources and support the increased nutritional needs. Inexpensive feeding source is one of the key limiting factors for the expansion of SCP production. The present study examined the valorization of biogas derived from the anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge and the discarded effluent as nutrients source to produce SCP using methanotrophic bacteria. Results indicated that the mixed methanotrophic culture can grow well on the pasteurized AD supernatant and biogas, succeeding in promising dry weight (DW) yield (0.66 ± 0.01 g-DW/g-CH4 and 11.54 ± 0.12 g-DW/g-NH4+). Methylomonas (56.26%) and Methylophilus (24.60%) spp. were the two main representatives of the mixed culture. The produced dried biomass had a protein content higher than 41% w/w, including essential amino acids like histidine, valine, phenylalanine, isoleucine, leucine, threonine and lysine. The cultivated SCP shows potential utilization as protein source for animal diets.

Abstract
To achieve a sustainable production of food and feed production, inexpensive carbon and nutrient sources are needed. In the present study, biologically upgraded biogas is coupled with electrochemically extracted nitrogen from digested biowaste to cultivate mixed methanotrophs as protein source. Results showed that an increase from less than 5 μgCu2+/L to 100 μgCu2+/L increased the biomass production by 41%. Microbial analysis revealed that the dominated Methylomonas spp. followed by Methylophilus spp. created a specialized community for high CH4 assimilation. Moreover, duplicate semi-continuous fermenters run for 120 days validating the efficiency of alternative carbon and nitrogen feedstocks at long-term operation. As for dry cell weight (DCW) production, more than 2.5 g-DCW/L were produced using biologically upgraded biogas and electrochemically extracted nitrogen. Furthermore, the protein content and amino acid profile (>50% of DCW) demonstrated that the microbial biomass pose the characteristics to be used as animal feed additive.

Abstract
Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) that can use biogas and recycled nitrogen from wastewater as a sustainable feedstock for single cell protein (SCP) synthesis are receiving increasing attention. Though promising, limited knowledge is available on the alternative strains especially the ones that can tolerant to strict environments such as acidic conditions. Furthermore, how would the hydrogen sulfide affect the MOB (especially the alternative strains) for SCP synthesis when crude biogas is used as feedstock is still unknown. In this study, the capability of an acidic-tolerant methanotrophic bacterium Methylocapsa acidiphila for SCP production using raw biogas and the associated inhibitory effect of sulfide on the bioconversion was for the first time investigated. Results showed that the inhibitory effect of sulfide on the growth of M. acidiphila was observed starting from 8.13 mg L-1 Na2S (equivalent to approximately 1000 ppm of H2S in crude biogas). The total amino acid content in the dry biomass decreased more than two times due to sulfide inhibition compared with the control samples without the presence of sulfide (585.96 mg/g dry biomass), while the proportion of essential amino acids in the total amino acid was not affected when the concentration of Na2S was lower than 5.73 mg L-1. The performance of M. acidiphila in a sulfide-rich environment was further studied at different operational conditions. The feeding gas with a CH4/O2 ratio of 6:4 could help to alleviate the sulfide inhibition, compared with other ratios (4:6 and 8:2). Moreover, the sequential supply of the feed gas could also alleviate sulfide inhibition. In addition, the MOB's growth rate was higher when applying a higher mixing rate of 120 rpm, compared with 70 rpm and 0, due to a better gas-liquid mass transfer. The inoculum size of 20% and 10% resulted in a faster growth rate compared with the 5%. Furthermore, M. acidiphila could assimilate either NH4+ or NO3- as nitrogen source with a similar growth rate, giving it the potential to recycle nitrogen from a wide range of wastewaters. The results will not only create new knowledge for better understanding the role of hydrogen sulfide in the assimilation of raw biogas by acid-tolerant M. acidiphila but also provide technical insights into the development of an efficient and robust process for the waste-to-protein conversion.

Abstract
Conventional treatment of residual resources relies on nutrient removal to limit pollution. Recently, nutrient recovery technologies have been proposed as more environmentally and energetically efficient strategies. Nevertheless, the upcycling of recovered resources is typically limited by their quality or purity. Specifically, nitrogen extracted from residual streams, such as anaerobic digestion (AD) effluents and wastewaters, could support microbial protein production. In this context, this study was performed as a proof-of-concept to combine nitrogen recovery via electrochemical reactors with the production of high quality microbial protein via cultivation of methanotrophs. Two types of AD effluents, i.e., cattle manure and organic fraction of municipal solid waste, and urine were tested to investigate the nitrogen extraction efficiency. The results showed that 31-51% of the nitrogen could be recovered free of trace chemicals from residual streams depending on the substrate and voltage used. Based on the results achieved, higher nitrogen concentration in the residual streams resulted in higher nitrogen flux between anodic and cathodic chambers. Results showed that the extraction process has an energy demand of 9.97 (±0.7) - 14.44 (±1.19) kWh/kg-N, depending on the substrate and operating conditions. Furthermore, a mixed-culture of methanotrophic bacteria could grow well with the extracted nitrogen producing a total dry weight of 0.49 ± 0.01 g/L. Produced biomass contained a wide range of essential amino acids making it comparable with conventional protein sources.

Abstract
Cities are at crossroads, confronting challenges posed by increasing population growth, climate change and faltering livability. These problems are prompting urban areas to chart novel path towards adopting sustainable production/consumption strategies. The alluring concept of circular economy (CE) that focuses on reuse and recycling of materials in technical and biological cycles to reduce waste generation is a critical intervention. Present article aims on precisely highlighting the importance of biogenic materials which have an immense potential to be transformed into a source of value in an urban ecosystem. It also sets out to explore the scope of implementing 'urban biocycles' that strategically directs the flow of resources, their use, extracting value in the form of nutrients, energy and materials post consumption within an urban metabolic regime. The concepts discussed contribute to biocycle economy by outlining emerging requirements, identification of common strategies, policies and emerging areas of research in line with sustainable development goals.

Abstract
Marine-derived biowaste was valorized to develop chitin/fish gelatin porous materials with the aim of being used as moisture scavengers and bioactive carriers. Chitin was extracted from squid pens, abundant and available biowastes from fishery industry, through a sustainable process and the environmental assessment was carried out. Besides the valorization of biowaste, it is worth noting that the use of this specific biowaste allows the avoidance of discoloration and demineralization processes to extract chitin and, thus, a lower consumption of resources, both chemicals and energy, in comparison to the conventional chitin extraction from crustacean shells. Consequently, this alternative source of chitin brings economic and environmental benefits. In addition to the reduction of food waste disposal, the incorporation of squid pen-extracted chitin into fish gelatin formulations led to the conversion of a biowaste into a value-added product. In this regard, chitin was employed as a reinforcing agent in order to improve the mechanical behavior of fish gelatin materials. It is worth noting that good compatibility between gelatin and chitin was achieved since no chitin aggregation was observed. Furthermore, more defined pores were obtained after chitin addition. Additionally, tetrahydrocurcumin was incorporated into the formulation as a bioactive and its release was analyzed during three days. It was observed that samples prepared with chitin and THC showed potential as active porous materials for bioactive delivery.

Abstract
Digestate management for anaerobic digestion (AD) is becoming a bottleneck of the sustainability of AD plants when the use of digestate for agricultural application is restricted due to nutrient surplus and low market acceptance. Digestate quality and treatment in high solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) can be better than conventional low-solid system. The rheological behavior of digestate in high solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) can have a great impact on the energy consumption of digestate management. After post-conditioning guided by rheological parameters, the solid digestate can be further treated based on the integrated solutions to enhance the energy efficiency or nutrients recovery. The environmental impacts for some core parts of those integrated systems were also evaluated in this study. This article presented a critical review of recent investigations of digestate management for HSAD, especially focusing on the rheology of HSAD digestate, integrated solutions and their environmental performances.

Abstract
The global demand for high-quality, protein-rich foods will continue to increase as the global population grows, along with income levels. Aquaculture is poised to help fulfill some of this demand, and is thus the fastest growing animal protein industry. A key challenge for it, though, is sourcing a sustainable, renewable protein ingredient. Single cell protein (SCP) products, protein meals based on microbial or algal biomass, have the potential to fulfill this need. Here, we review potential sources of SCP strains and their respective production processes, highlight recent advances on identification of new SCP strains and feedstocks, and, finally, review new feeding trial data on important aquaculture species, specifically Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, and whiteleg shrimp.

Abstract
Conventional microbial protein production relies on the usage of pure chemicals and gases. Natural gas, which is a fossil resource, is the common input gas for bacterial protein production. Alternative sources for gas feedstock and nutrients can sufficiently decrease the operational cost and environmental impact of microbial protein production processes. In the present study, the effluents streams of municipal biowaste anaerobic digestion, were used to grow methane oxidising bacteria which can be used as protein source. Results demonstrated that a 40:60 CH4:O2 (v/v) gas feeding resulted in microbial biomass production of 0.95 g-DM/L by a Methylophilus dominated community. When raw biogas was used as input for methane corresponding to the same initial methane partial pressure as before, instead of pure methane, the growth was partially hindered (0.61 g-DM/L) due to the presence of H2S (IC50: 1376 ppm). Hence, desulfurization is suggested before using biogas for microbial protein production. At semi-continuous mode, results showed that the produced biomass had relatively high protein content (>40% of dry weight) and the essential amino acids lysine, valine, leucine and histidine were detected at high levels.
