Abstract
Major challenge in biorefineries is the use of all lignocellulosic components, particularly lignins. In this study, Thermobacillus xylanilyliticus grew on kraft lignin, steam-exploded and native wheat straws produced different sets of phenoloxidases and xylanases, according to the substrate. After growth, limited lignin structural modifications, mainly accompanied by a decrease in phenolic acids was observed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. The depletion of p-coumaric acid, vanillin and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde combined to vanillin production in the culture media indicated that the bacterium can transform some phenolic compounds. Proteomic approaches allowed the identification of 29 to 33 different hemicellulases according to the substrates. Twenty oxidoreductases were differentially expressed between kraft lignin and steam-exploded wheat straw. These oxidoreductases may be involved in lignin and aromatic compound utilization and detoxification. This study highlights the potential value of Thermobacillus xylanilyticus and its enzymes in the simultaneous valorization of hemicellulose and phenolic compounds from lignocelluloses.

Abstract
The efficient degradation of lignocellulose is a bottleneck for its integrated utilization. This research performed species analysis and made functional predictions in various ecosystems using multiomics coupling to construct a core synthetic microbial community with efficient lignocellulose degradation function. The synthetic microbial community was employed to degrade corn straw via solid-state fermentation. The degradation mechanisms were resolved using proteomics. The optimum culture conditions included 10% inoculum level (w/v), 4% nitrogen source ratio and a fermentation time of 23 d. Under these conditions, the degradation rates of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin were 34.91%, 45.94%, and 23.34%, respectively. Proteomic analysis revealed that lignin 1,4-β-xylanase, β-xylosidase and endo-1,4-β-xylanase were closely related to lignocellulose degradation. The metabolic pathways involved in lignocellulose degradation and the functional roles of eight strains were obtained. The synthesis of a microbial community via multiomics linkage technology can effectively decompose lignocellulose, which is useful for their further utilization.

Abstract
The biorefining process of lignocellulosic biomass has recently emerged as one of the most profitable biofuel production options. However, pretreatment is required to improve the recalcitrant lignocellulose's enzymatic conversion efficiency. Among biomass pretreatment methods, the steam explosion is an eco-friendly, inexpensive, and effective approach to pretreating biomass, significantly promoting biofuel production efficiency and yield. This review paper critically presents the steam explosion's reaction mechanism and technological characteristics for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. Indeed, the principles of steam explosion technology for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment were scrutinized. Moreover, the impacts of process factors on pretreatment efficiency and sugar recovery for the following biofuel production were also discussed in detail. Finally, the limitations and prospects of steam explosion pretreatment were mentioned. Generally, steam explosion technology applications could bring great potential in pretreating biomass, although deeper studies are needed to deploy this method on industrial scales.

Abstract
The screening of ligninolytic enzyme-producing fungal species in samples led to the identification of Paracremonium sp. LCB1, Clonostachys compactiuscula LCD1 and C. compactiuscula LCN1. Both these strains produced high levels of hemicellulase and ligninolytic enzyme production over a relatively short fermentation period of 3-5 days while exhibiting very low levels of cellulase activity. The results of the tests indicated that co-culturing LCB1 and LCN1 enhanced the ability to degrade lignin, and the ideal degrading circumstances and internal degrading mechanism of combined fungi were examined. The results showed that under conditions of temperature (30°C), pH (5), culture time (40 d), solid-liquid ratio (1:2.5), the pretreatment of bamboo culms with a co-culture of LCB1 and LCN1 resulted in a pronounced 76.37% drop in lignin weight and a high lignin/cellulose loss ratio (>10). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of these bio-pretreated bamboo culms, further confirming that LCB1 and LCN1 co-culture represents an effective approach to bamboo delignification.

Abstract
Birch wood is a potential feedstock for biogas production in Northern Europe; however, the lignocellulosic matrix is recalcitrant preventing efficient conversion to methane. To improve digestibility, birch wood was thermally pre-treated using steam explosion at 220 °C for 10 min. The steam-exploded birch wood (SEBW) was co-digested with cow manure for a period of 120 days in continuously fed CSTRs where the microbial community adapted to the SEBW feedstock. Changes in the microbial community were tracked by stable carbon isotopes- and 16S r RNA analyses. The results showed that the adapted microbial culture could increase methane production up to 365 mL/g VS day, which is higher than previously reported methane production from pre-treated SEBW. This study also revealed that the microbial adaptation significantly increased the tolerance of the microbial community against the inhibitors furfural and HMF which were formed during pre-treatment of birch. The results of the microbial analysis indicated that the relative amount of cellulosic hydrolytic microorganisms (e.g. Actinobacteriota and Fibrobacterota) increased and replaced syntrophic acetate bacteria (e.g. Cloacimonadota, Dethiobacteraceae, and Syntrophomonadaceae) as a function of time. Moreover, the stable carbon isotope analysis indicated that the acetoclastic pathway became the main route for methane production after long-term adaptation. The shift in methane production pathway and change in microbial community shows that for anaerobic digestion of SEBW, the hydrolysis step is important. Although acetoclastic methanogens became dominant after 120 days, a potential route for methane production could also be a direct electron transfer among Sedimentibacter and methanogen archaea.

Abstract
The microbial decomposition and utilization of lignocellulosic biomass present in the plant tissues are driven by a series of carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes) acting in concert. As the non-catalytic domains widely found in the modular CAZymes, carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs) are intimately associated with catalytic domains (CDs) that effect the diverse hydrolytic reactions. The CBMs function as auxiliary components for the recognition, adhesion, and depolymerization of the complex substrate mediated by the associated CDs. Therefore, CBMs are deemed as significant biotools available for enzyme engineering, especially to facilitate the enzymatic hydrolysis of dense and insoluble plant tissues to acquire more fermentable sugars. This review aims at presenting the taxonomies and biological properties of the CBMs currently curated in the CAZy database. The molecular mechanisms that CBMs use in assisting the enzymatic hydrolysis of plant polysaccharides and the regulatory factors of CBM-substrate interactions are outlined in detail. In addition, guidelines for the rational designs of CBM-fused CAZymes are proposed. Furthermore, the potential to harness CBMs for industrial applications, especially in enzymatic pretreatment of the recalcitrant lignocellulose, is evaluated. It is envisaged that the ideas outlined herein will aid in the engineering and production of novel CBM-fused enzymes to facilitate efficient degradation of lignocellulosic biomass to easily fermentable sugars for production of value-added products, including biofuels.

Abstract
This study aims to obtain anaerobic fungi from the rumen and fecal samples and investigates their potential for lignocellulosic bioconversion. Multiple anaerobic strains were isolated from rumen contents (CR1–CR21) and fecal samples (CF1–CF10) of Bactrian camel using the Hungate roll tube technique. After screening for fiber degradability, strains from rumen contents (Oontomyces sp. CR2) and feces (Piromyces sp. CF9) were compared with Pecoramyces sp. F1 (earlier isolated from goat rumen, having high CAZymes of GHs) for various fermentation and digestion parameters. The cultures were fermented with different substrates (reed, alfalfa stalk, Broussonetia papyrifera leaves, and Melilotus officinalis) at 39°C for 96 h. The Oontomyces sp. CR2 had the highest total gas and hydrogen production from most substrates in the in vitro rumen fermentation system and also had the highest digestion of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and cellulose present in most substrates used. The isolated strains provided higher amounts of metabolites such as lactate, formate, acetate, and ethanol in the in vitro rumen fermentation system for use in various industrial applications. The results illustrated that anaerobic fungi isolated from Bactrian camel rumen contents (Oontomyces sp. CR2) have the highest lignocellulosic bioconversion potential, suggesting that the Bactrian camel rumen could be a good source for the isolation of anaerobic fungi for industrial applications.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the effect of microecological agents (MA) combined with molasses (M) on the biodegradation of rice straw in the rumen. Rice straw was pretreated in laboratory polyethylene 25 × 35 cm sterile bags with no additive control (Con), MA, and MA + M for 7, 15, 30, and 45 days, and then the efficacy of MA + M pretreatment was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. The scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that the MA or MA + M pretreatment altered the physical and chemical structure of rice straw. Meanwhile, the ruminal microbial attachment on the surface of rice straw was significantly increased after MA+M pretreatment. Furthermore, MA + M not only promoted rice straw fermentation in vitro but also improved digestibility by specifically inducing rumen colonization of Prevotellaceae_UCG-001, Butyrivibrio, and Succinimonas. Altogether, we concluded that microecological agents and molasses could be the best choices as a biological pretreatment for rice straw to enhance its nutritive value as a ruminant's feed.

Abstract
Anaerobic fungi, though low in abundance in rumen, play an important role in the degradation of forage for herbivores. When only anaerobic fungi exist in the fermentation system, the continuous accumulation of metabolites (e.g., hydrogen (H2) and formate) generated from their special metabolic organelles—the hydrogenosome—inhibits the enzymatic reactions in the hydrogenosome and reduces the activity of the anaerobic fungi. However, due to interspecific H2 transfer, H2 produced by the hydrogenosome can be used by other microorganisms to form valued bioproducts. This symbiotic interaction between anaerobic fungi and other microorganisms can be used to improve the nutritional value of animal feeds and produce value-added products that are normally in low concentrations in the fermentation system. Because of the important role in the generation and further utilization of H2, the study of the hydrogensome is increasingly becoming an important part of the development of anaerobic fungi as model organisms that can effectively improve the utilization value of roughage. Here, we summarize and discuss the classification and the process of biomass degradation of anaerobic fungi and the metabolism and function of anaerobic fungal hydrogensome, with a focus on the potential role of the hydrogensome in the efficient utilization of biomass.

Abstract
To improve the lignin degradation efficiency, we established a co-culture consortium (LDFC) consisting of Trametes hirsuta BYL-3, Trametes versicolor BYL-7 and Trametes hirsuta BYL-8. The testing results showed that the constructed consortium showed improved the lignin degradation rate by fungi. The optimal cultivation conditions were mixture at 1:1:1 vol ratio of each fungus, 7% (w/v) of inoculum amount, culture temperature at 26 °C, pH was 6.9 and 10 days of culturing time. Under these conditions, the degradation rate of lignin was 39.7%, which was 9.3% higher than those before optimization (30.4%). Using rice straw for treatment by LDFC to papermaking, the paper tensile strength was 8 N, and the ring pressure index was 2.46 N·m/g, which meets the standards for the production of corrugated paper for packaging. These results indicate that LDFC has potential application value to convert rice straw resources for bio-pulping to make papers.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion of organic waste and wastewater represents an attractive sustainable bio-technology to produce methane as an alternative to fossil energy. In response to improvement of methane production via enhancing methanogenesis, current strategies of the addition of external biological/non-biological materials have to confront either the loss of materials, high cost and/or possible destruction of the microbial community. Here, we report the first case of using immobilized fungi Aspergillus sydowii 8L-9-F02 to optimize the microbial community, achieving remarkable improvement of the methane production in both batch test (1.5 times) and continuous flow operation (1.13-1.31 times). The crucial role of fungi is associated with the stimulation of enrichment of Methanosaeta and Methanobacterium for methanogenesis from 28.2 to 67.4% as well as the improved activity of enzyme F420. Moreover, fungi also increase the content of extracellular polymeric substances, facilitating the formation of bio-aggregates. This work provides a new pathway to enhance methanogenesis during anaerobic digestion of wastewater by using fungi as bio-enhancer.

Abstract
Anaerobic fungi in the digestive tract of herbivores are one of the critical types of fiber-degrading microorganisms present in the rumen. They degrade lignocellulosic materials using unique rhizoid structures and a diverse range of fiber-degrading enzymes, producing metabolic products such as H2/CO2, formate, lactate, acetate, and ethanol. Methanogens in the rumen utilize some of these products (e.g., H2 and formate) to produce methane. An investigation of the interactions between anaerobic fungi and methanogens is helpful as it provides valuable insight into the microbial interactions within the rumen. During the last few decades, research has demonstrated that anaerobic fungi stimulate the growth of methanogens and maintain methanogenic diversity. Meanwhile, methanogens increase the fiber-degrading capability of anaerobic fungi and stimulate metabolic pathways in the fungal hydrogenosome. The ability of co-cultures of anaerobic fungi and methanogens to degrade fiber and produce methane could potentially be a valuable method for the degradation of lignocellulosic materials and methane production.

Abstract
To reduce the cost of lignocellulosic pretreatment, rice straw was ensiled with dilute formic acid (FA, 0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6%) for 3, 6, 9, 15 and 30 days, and evaluated its effects on fermentation dynamics, lignocellulosic degradation and enzymatic hydrolysis. The results showed that the application of FA, especially at 0.6% level, reduced total fermentation losses of the resulting silages, as evidenced by low dry matter loss, ammonia nitrogen and ethanol content. Meanwhile, the 0.6% FA application promoted hemicellulose removal (232.41 vs 187.52 g/kg DM) and xylose production (0.35 vs 2.80 g/kg DM). The glucose yield and cellulose convertibility of rice straw increased after 30 days of ensiling, and further enhanced by the 0.6% FA application. In conclusion, the 0.6% FA-assisted ensiling pretreatment improved both biomass preservation, hemicellulose removal and enzymatic hydrolysis of rice straw, which is beneficial to the subsequent biofuel production chain.

Abstract
Objective The present study was conducted to examine the gas production, fermentation characteristics, nutrient degradation, and methanogenic community composition of a rumen fluid culture with Broussonetia papyrifera (B. papyrifera) subjected to ensiling or steam explosion (SE) pretreatment. Methods Fresh B. papyrifera was collected and pretreated by ensiling or SE, which was then fermented with ruminal fluids as ensiled B. papyrifera group, steam-exploded B. papyrifera group, and untreated B. papyrifera group. The gas and methane production, fermentation characteristics, nutrient degradation, and methanogenic community were determined during the fermentation. Results Cumulative methane production was significantly improved with SE pretreatment compared with ensiled or untreated biomass accompanied with more volatile fatty acids production. After 72 h incubation, SE and ensiling pretreatments decreased the acid detergent fiber contents by 39.4% and 22.9%, and neutral detergent fiber contents by 10.6% and 47.2%, respectively. Changes of methanogenic diversity and abundance of methanogenic archaea corresponded to the variations in fermentation pattern and methane production. Conclusion Compared with ensiling pretreatment, SE can be a promising technique for the efficient utilization of B. papyrifera, which would contribute to sustainable livestock production systems.

Abstract
Nanobubble water (NBW) has been proven to efficiently improve methane production from organic solid wastes. However, the increase in reactor volume due to addition of NBW hinders its practical applications. In this study, anaerobically digested sludge was first pre-augmented by N2-NBW and O2-NBW using corn straw as sole substrate for methane production with electron transfer activity being monitored. 20%, 33% and 38% of cellulose and 29%, 35% and 35% of hemicellulose were reduced respectively from the control, N2-NBW and O2-NBW pre-augmented sludge reactors. N2-NBW and O2-NBW pre-augmented sludge reactors achieved methane yields of 127 and 142 mL/g-VS, about 10% and 22% higher than that from the control. Results show that use of NBW pre-augmented anaerobically digested sludge as inoculum can remarkably enhance methane yield from corn straw, providing a novel concept for NBW-based anaerobic digestion system with no increase of reactor volume and construction cost in practice.

Abstract
In this study, rapeseed was pretreated by steam explosion pretreatment technology and subsequently pressed to prepare rapeseed oil. GC, UPLC, and HPLC techniques were employed to analyze the quality characteristics of the rapeseed oil, including the canolol content and other quality characteristics. Additionally, the effect of steam explosion pretreatment technology on the canolol content of rapeseed oil was studied and the formation mechanism of canolol elucidated. The results revealed that when the steam explosion pressure reached 1.0 MPa, the canolol content of the tested oil increased from 41.21 to 2,168.69 mg/kg (52.63-fold increase) and that sinapic acid played a significant role in the conversion of canolol. Thus, the sinapine was converted into the intermediate (sinapic acid) by hydrolysis, which in turn was transformed into canolol through decarboxylation. The instantaneous high-energy environment generated by steam explosion pretreatment could intensify the hydrolysis and decarboxylation reactions of sinapine and sinapinic acid, thereby significantly increasing the canolol content of the oil. To prove the superiority of steam explosion pretreatment, we compared it with other pretreatment technologies, including traditional high-temperature roasting and popular microwave pretreatment. The results revealed that rapeseed oil prepared by steam explosion pretreatment displayed the best quality characteristics. This study can be a reference for the preparation process of rapeseed oil with superhigh canolol content and superior quality characteristics using steam explosion pretreatment.

Abstract
To determine ways to improve the utilization of corn stover, this study investigated methane production from different parts of corn stover using a simple co-culture of an anaerobic fungus (Pecoramyces species) and methanogen (Methanobrevibacter species). The simple co-culture was incubated with the stem pith, leaf blade, or stem bark of corn stover (as substrates) at 39°C for 72 h. The results showed that the stem bark had the lowest (P < 0.05) digestibility (38.0 ± 1.36%) and neutral detergent solubles, that is, cell solubles (31.6 ± 0.45%), and the highest (P < 0.05) lignin content (4.8 ± 0.56%). The leaf blade had a significantly higher methane conversion rate (56.6 ± 0.76 mL/g digested substrate) than the stem pith (49.2 ± 1.60 mL/g digested substrate), even though they showed similar levels of methane production (42.4 ± 1.0 mL and 40.9 ± 1.35 mL, respectively). Both the leaf blade and stem pith of corn stover have the potential to produce methane in a simple co-culture of an anaerobic fungus and methanogen.

Abstract
In this study, flaxseed was pretreated by steam explosion technology and subsequently pressed to prepare flaxseed oil. GC, UPLC, HPLC, and GC-MS techniques were used to analyze the quality characteristics of the prepared flaxseed oil. These included the food safety risk indices, micronutrient components, and oxidative stability. The effects of different steam explosion pressures on the quality characteristics and relative volatile components of flaxseed oil were also investigated. The results revealed that steam explosion pretreatment technology could significantly increase the oil yield, improve micronutrient content, and strengthen the oxidation stability of the product. Moreover, the food safety risk indices (e.g., benzopyrene) were controlled within a reasonable range, while the fatty acid content remained almost unchanged. Notably, the relative pyrazine content in the total volatile components of flaxseed oil was 68.25% when the steam explosion pressure reached 1.2 MPa. This was considered as the main factor that contributed to the unique concentrated fragrance of the produced flaxseed oil. To prove the superiority of the steam explosion pretreatment, we compared this technique with traditional high-temperature roasting and popular microwave pretreatment techniques. The results revealed that flaxseed oil prepared by steam explosion pretreatment displayed the best quality characteristics and most concentrated fragrance. Thus, steam explosion technology shows great potential for application to produce high-quality concentrated fragrance flaxseed oil. This study provides significant reference and guidance for the preparation process of flaxseed oil.
