Sulfur dioxide-ethanol-water fractionation platform for conversion of recycled wood to sugars, lignin and lignosulfonates

Tuning the electronic metal-carbon interactions in Lignin-based carbon-supported ruthenium-based electrocatalysts for enhanced hydrogen evolution reactions

Ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles dispersed on carbon support are promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to strong electronic metal-carbon interactions (EMCIs). Defects engineering in carbon supports is an effective strategy to adjust EMCIs. We prepared nitrogen/sulfur co-doped carbon supported Ru nanoparticles (Ru@N/S-LC) using sodium lignosulfonate and urea as feedstocks. Intrinsic S dopants from sodium lignosulfonate create rich S defects, thus enhancing the EMCIs within Ru@N/S-LC, leading a faster electron transfer between Ru nanoparticles and N/S-LC compared with N-doped carbon supported Ru nanoparticles (Ru@N-CC). The resulting Ru@N/S-LC exhibits an enhanced work function and a down-shifted d-band center, inducing stronger electron capturing ability and weaker hydrogen desorption energy than Ru@N-CC. Ru@N/S-LC requires only 7 and 94 mV overpotential in acidic medium and alkaline medium to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to clarify the impact of sulfur (S) doping and the mechanism underlying the notable catalytic activity of Ru@N/S-LC. This study offers a perspective for utilizing the natural dopants of biomass to adjust the EMCIs for electrocatalysts.

Development of a simple and versatile process for commercial and municipal lignocellulosic waste conversion into fermentable sugars

Lignocellulosic wastes are valuable feedstock in biorefinery thanks to their high sugars content and low level of fibers intricacy. However, their massification is often a limiting parameter in the development of industrial projects. Hence, this study aims to develop an efficient process enabling the conversion of several waste streams within the same process line. Several pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis parameters were firstly evaluated with Old Corrugated Cardboards (OCC) as a model substrate. A chemical free pretreatment followed by an enzymatic hydrolysis (Cellic Ctec 3 enzymatic cocktail at 0.06 g of cocktail per g of Total Sugars (TS)) efficiently depolymerized OCC into monomeric sugars (0.50 g/gTS) consequently fermented into ethanol (0.24 g/gTS). Then, the suitability of this process was validated for sugars production from Pulp and Paper (P&P) sludge (0.48 g/gTS), sieved toilets papers (0.40 g/gTS), the Organic fraction of municipal solid waste (0.37 g/gTS) and Waste Wood B (0.08 g/gTS).

Organosolv pretreatment for biorefineries: Current status, perspectives, and challenges

Biorefineries integrate processes for the sustainable conversion of biomass into chemicals, materials, and bioenergy so that resources are optimized and effluents are minimized. Despite the vast potential of lignocellulosic biorefineries, their success depends heavily on effective, economically viable, and sustainable biomass fractionation. Although efficient, organosolv pretreatment still faces challenges that must be overcome for its widespread utilization, mainly related to solvent type and recycling, robustness regarding biomass type and integration of hemicellulose recovery and use. This review shows the recent advances and state-of-the-art of organosolv pretreatment, discussing the advances, such as the use of biobased solvents, whilst also shedding light on the perspectives of using the streams - cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin - to produce biofuels and products of high added value. In addition, it presents an overview of the existing industrial implementations of organosolv processes and, lastly, shows the main scientific and industrial challenges and opportunities for this process.

Nanocellulose for Sustainable Water Purification

Nanocelluloses (NC) are nature-based sustainable biomaterials, which not only possess cellulosic properties but also have the important hallmarks of nanomaterials, such as large surface area, versatile reactive sites or functionalities, and scaffolding stability to host inorganic nanoparticles. This class of nanomaterials offers new opportunities for a broad spectrum of applications for clean water production that were once thought impractical. This Review covers substantial discussions based on evaluative judgments of the recent literature and technical advancements in the fields of coagulation/flocculation, adsorption, photocatalysis, and membrane filtration for water decontamination through proper understanding of fundamental knowledge of NC, such as purity, crystallinity, surface chemistry and charge, suspension rheology, morphology, mechanical properties, and film stability. To supplement these, discussions on low-cost and scalable NC extraction, new characterizations including solution small-angle X-ray scattering evaluation, and structure-property relationships of NC are also reviewed. Identifying knowledge gaps and drawing perspectives could generate guidance to overcome uncertainties associated with the adaptation of NC-enabled water purification technologies. Furthermore, the topics of simultaneous removal of multipollutants disposal and proper handling of post/spent NC are discussed. We believe NC-enabled remediation nanomaterials can be integrated into a broad range of water treatments, greatly improving the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of water purification.

Recent advances in commercial biorefineries for lignocellulosic ethanol production: Current status, challenges and future perspectives

Cellulosic ethanol production has received global attention to use as transportation fuels with gasoline blending virtue of carbon benefits and decarbonization. However, due to changing feedstock composition, natural resistance, and a lack of cost-effective pretreatment and downstream processing, contemporary cellulosic ethanol biorefineries are facing major sustainability issues. As a result, we've outlined the global status of present cellulosic ethanol facilities, as well as main roadblocks and technical challenges for sustainable and commercial cellulosic ethanol production. Additionally, the article highlights the technical and non-technical barriers, various R&D advancements in biomass pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation strategies that have been deliberated for low-cost sustainable fuel ethanol. Moreover, selection of a low-cost efficient pretreatment method, process simulation, unit integration, state-of-the-art in one pot saccharification and fermentation, system microbiology/ genetic engineering for robust strain development, and comprehensive techno-economic analysis are all major bottlenecks that must be considered for long-term ethanol production in the transportation sector.

Simulation and optimization of organosolv based lignocellulosic biomass refinery: A review

Organosolv pretreatment can be considered as the core of the lignocellulosic biomass fractionation within the biorefinery concept. Organosolv facilitates the separation of the major fractions (cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin), and their use as renewable feedstocks to produce bioenergy, biofuels, and added-value biomass derived chemicals. The efficient separation of these fractions affects the economic feasibility of the biorefinery complex. This review focuses on the simulation of the organosolv pretreatment and the optimization of (i) feedstock delignification, (ii) sugars production (mainly from hemicelluloses), (iii) enzymatic digestibility of the cellulose fraction and (iv) quality of lignin. Simulation is used for the technoeconomic optimization of the biorefinery complex. Simulation and optimization implement a holistic approach considering the efficient technological, economic, and environmental performance of the biorefinery operational units. Consequently, an optimized organosolv stage is the first step for a sustainable, economically viable biorefinery complex in the concept of industrial ecology and zero waste circular economy.

Pilot scale sulfur dioxide-ethanol-water fractionation of recycled wood to sugars, bioethanol, lignin and lignosulfonates: Carbohydrate balance

Two grades of recycled wood (Waste Wood A and Waste Wood B) were fractionated on a pilot scale (800 BD kg) to monomeric sugars, lignin and lignosulfonates using SO₂-Ethanol-Water (AVAP®) technology, including pretreatment, separation of cellulosic and hemicellulosic streams, and saccharification. Carbohydrate mass balance was obtained through determination of poly-, oligo- and monosaccharides as well as sugar degradation products in process streams. High monosaccharide yields were obtained confirming laboratory scale findings. Fermentability of mixed cellulosic and hemicellulosic sugar stream was confirmed on bench scale (25 kg).
