Upcycling biowaste into advanced carbon materials via low-temperature plasma hybrid system: applications, mechanisms, strategies and future prospects

This review focuses on the recent advances in the sustainable conversion of biowaste to valuable carbonaceous materials. This study summarizes the significant progress in biowaste-derived carbon materials (BCMs) via a plasma hybrid system. This includes systematic studies like AI-based multi-coupling systems, promising synthesis strategies from an economic point of view, and their potential applications towards energy, environment, and biomedicine. Plasma modified BCM has a new transition lattice phase and exhibits high resilience, while fabrication and formation mechanisms of BCMs are reviewed in plasma hybrid system. A unique 2D structure can be designed and formulated from the biowaste with fascinating physicochemical properties like high surface area, unique defect sites, and excellent conductivity. The structure of BCMs offers various activated sites for element doping and it shows satisfactory adsorption capability, and dynamic performance in the field of electrochemistry. In recent years, many studies have been reported on the biowaste conversion into valuable materials for various applications. Synthesis methods are an indispensable factor that directly affects the structure and properties of BCMs. Therefore, it is imperative to review the facile synthesis methods and the mechanisms behind the formation of BCMs derived from the low-temperature plasma hybrid system, which is the necessity to obtain BCMs having desirable structure and properties by choosing a suitable synthesis process. Advanced carbon-neutral materials could be widely synthesized as catalysts for application in environmental remediation, energy conversion and storage, and biotechnology.

Gasification of biomass for syngas production: Research update and stoichiometry diagram presentation

This mini-review provides an update on current research on producing high-quality syngas from biomass via gasification. Specifically, the review highlights the effective valorization of feedstocks, the development of novel catalysts for reforming reactions, the configuration of novel integrated gasification processes with an assisted field, and the proposal of advanced modeling tools, including the use of machine learning strategies for process design and optimization. The review also includes examples of using a stoichiometry diagram to describe biomass gasification. The research efforts in this area are constantly evolving, and this review provides an up-to-date overview of the most recent advances and prospects for future research. The proposed advancements in gasification technology have the potential to significantly contribute to sustainable energy production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Food waste valorisation via gasification - A review on emerging concepts, prospects and challenges

Disposing of the enormous amounts of food waste (FW) produced worldwide remains a great challenge, promoting worldwide research on the utilization of FW for the generation of value-added products. Gasification is a significant approach for decomposing and converting organic waste materials into biochar, bio-oil, and syngas, which could be adapted for energy (hydrogen (H₂) and heat) generation and environmental (removal of pollutants and improving the soil quality) applications. Employment of FW matrices for syngas production through gasification is one of the effective methods of energy recovery. This review explains different gasification processes (catalytic and non-catalytic) used for the decomposition of unutilized food wastes and the effect of operating parameters on H₂-rich syngas generation. Also, potential applications of gasification byproducts such as biochar and bio-oil for effective valorization have been discussed. Besides, the scope of simulation to optimize the gasification conditions for the effective valorization of FW is elaborated, along with the current progress and challenges in the research to identify the feasibility of gasification technology for FW. Overall, this review concludes the sustainable route for conversion of unutilized food into hydrogen-enriched syngas production.

Valorization of biomass through gasification for green hydrogen generation: A comprehensive review

Green and sustainable hydrogen from biomass gasification processes is one of the promising ways to alternate fossil fuels-based hydrogen production. First off, an overview of green hydrogen generation from biomass gasification processes is presented and the corresponding possible gasification reactions and the effect of respective experimental criteria are explained in detail. In addition, a comprehensive explanation of the catalytic effect on tar reduction and hydrogen generation via catalytic gasification is presented regarding the functional mechanisms of various types of catalysts. Furthermore, the commercialization aspects, the associated technical challenges and barriers, and the prospects of a biomass gasification process for green hydrogen generation are discussed. Finally, this comprehensive review provides the related advancements, challenges, and great insight of biomass gasification for the green hydrogen generation to realize a sustainable hydrogen society via biomass valorization.

Current Trends in Waste Plastics’ Liquefaction into Fuel Fraction: A Review

Polymers and plastics are crucial materials in many sectors of our economy, due to their numerous advantages. They also have some disadvantages, among the most important are problems with the recycling and disposal of used plastics. The recovery of waste plastics is increasing every year, but over 27% of plastics are landfilled. The rest is recycled, where, unfortunately, incineration is still the most common management method. From an economic perspective, waste management methods that lead to added-value products are most preferred—as in the case of material and chemical recycling. Since chemical recycling can be used for difficult wastes (poorly selected, contaminated), it seems to be the most effective way of managing these materials. Moreover, as a result this of kind of recycling, it is possible to obtain commercially valuable products, such as fractions for fuel composition and monomers for the reproduction of polymers. This review focuses on various liquefaction technologies as a prospective recycling method for three types of plastic waste: PE, PP and PS.

Torrefied herb residues in nitrogen, air and oxygen atmosphere: Thermal decomposition behavior and pyrolytic products characters

The thermal decomposition behavior and pyrolytic products characters of herb residue (HR) torrefied in N₂, air and O₂ were investigated in present work. The clear gradual regularity of samples in Van Krevelen diagram exhibited the severity and some similarities of torrefaction. The activation energy (E) calculated by distributed activation energy model (DAEM) found that the E values of torrefied samples was higher than raw HR if the conversion is below 0.8. Torrefaction treatment would beneficial to increase the yield of gas but inhibit the formation of oil, and the compounds of gas and bio-oil under different torrefaction conditions are also quite different. It should be noticed that the presence of oxygen in the torrefaction atmosphere would reduce the torrefaction temperature significantly, while maintaining the severity of torrefaction and pyrolytic products distribution.
