New insight into continuous recirculation-process for treating arsenate using bacterial biosorbent

Arsenic and antimony desorption in water treatment processes: Scaling up challenges with emerging adsorbents

The metalloids arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) belong to the pnictogen group of the periodic table; they share many characteristics, including their toxic and carcinogenic properties; and rank as high-priority pollutants in the United States and the European Union. Adsorption is one of the most effective techniques for removing both elements and desorption, for further reuse, is a part of the process to make adsorption more sustainable and feasible. This review presents the current state of knowledge on arsenic and antimony desorption from exhausted adsorbents previously used in water treatment, that has been reported in the literature. The application of different types of eluents to desorb As and Sb and their desorption performance are described. The regeneration of saturated adsorbents and adsorbate recovery techniques are outlined, including the fate of spent media and possible alternatives for waste disposal of exhausted materials. Future research directions are discussed, as well as current issues including the lack of environmental impact analysis of emerging adsorbents.

Cadmium biosorption and mechanism investigation using two cadmium-tolerant microorganisms isolated from rhizosphere soil of rice

Microbial remediation of cadmium-contaminated soil offers advantages like environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and simple operation. However, the efficacy of this remediation process relies on obtaining dominant strains and a comprehensive understanding of their Cd adsorption mechanisms. This study identified two Cd-resistant bacteria, Burkholderia sp. 1-22 and Bacillus sp. 6-6, with significant growth-promoting effects from rice rhizosphere soil. The strains showed remarkable Cd resistance up to ∼200 mg/L and alleviated Cd toxicity by regulating pH and facilitating bacterial adsorption of Cd. FTIR analysis showed crucial surface functional groups, like carboxyl and amino groups, on bacteria played significant roles in Cd adsorption. The strains could induce CdCO3 formation via a microbially induced calcium precipitation (MICP) mechanism, confirmed by SEM-EDS, X-ray analysis, and elemental mapping. Pot experiments showed these strains significantly increased organic matter and enzyme activity (e.g., urease, sucrase, peroxidase) in the rhizosphere soil versus the control group. These changes are crucial for restricting Cd mobility. Furthermore, strains 6-6 and 1-22 significantly enhance plant root detoxification of Cd, alleviating toxicity. Notably, increased pH likely plays a vital role in enhancing Cd precipitation and adsorption by strains, converting free Cd into non-bioavailable forms.

Removal of arsenic from semiarid area groundwater using a biosorbent from watermelon peel waste

Groundwater is one of the most important reservoirs in semi-arid and arid zones of the world, particularly in Mexico. The aims of this work were to produce a biosorbent from watermelon peel waste and a biosorbent with citric acid treatment and to evaluate both biosorbents with different concentrations of arsenic in groundwater. The biosorbents were produced with watermelon peel residues, which were observed by SEM microscopy to evaluate their physical morphology. Its removal potential was tested at concentrations of 0, 1, 13, 22, and 65 μg/L of arsenic, and both adsorption capacity and removal percentage were analyzed by final measurement obtained by atomic absorption spectrometry. The pH was measured throughout the experimentation maintaining ranges between 5.5 and 7.5. The biosorbent without treatment presented clearer and more compact flakes. At the microscopic level, the biosorbent without treatment presented pores with a more circular shape, and the biosorbent with treatment was more polygonal, similar to a honeycomb. The highest removal percentage was 99.99%, for both treatments at 4 h. The biosorbent without treatment at 4 h with arsenic concentrations of 65 μg/L presented the highest adsorption capacity (2.42 μg/g). It is concluded that watermelon peel biosorbent is a material that has the potential to remove arsenic from groundwater. This type of biosorbent is effective to remove arsenic and could be used in the field, however, it still needs to be optimized to convert it into a material completely suitable for large-scale use.

Continuous Systems Bioremediation of Wastewaters Loaded with Heavy Metals Using Microorganisms

Heavy metal pollution is a serious concern of the modern era due to its widespread negative effects on human health and to the environment. Conventional technologies applied for the uptake of this category of persistent pollutants are complex, often expensive, and inefficient at low metal concentrations. In the last few years, non-conventional alternatives have been studied in search of better solutions in terms of costs and sustainability. Microbial adsorbents are one of the biomass-based sorbents that have extensively demonstrated excellent heavy metals removal capacity even at low concentrations. However, most of the carried-out research regarding their application in wastewater treatment has been performed in discontinuous systems. The use of microorganisms for the uptake of metal ions in continuous systems could be an important step for the upscale of the remediation processes since it facilitates a faster remediation of higher quantities of wastewaters loaded with heavy metals, in comparison with batch systems removal. Thus, the current research aims to analyze the available studies focusing on the removal of metal ions from wastewaters using microorganisms, in continuous systems, with a focus on obtained performances, optimized experimental conditions, and the sustainability of the bioremoval process. The present work found that microbial-based remediation processes have demonstrated very good performances in continuous systems. Further sustainability analyses are required in order to apply the bioremediation technology in an optimized environmentally friendly way in large-scale facilities.

Arsenic in drinking water: overview of removal strategies and role of chitosan biosorbent for its remediation

Accessibility to clean drinking water often remains a crucial task at times. Among other water pollutants, arsenic is considered a more lethal contaminant and has become a serious threat to human life globally. This review discussed the sources, chemistry, distribution, and toxicity of arsenic and various conventional technologies that are in option for its removal from the water system. Nowadays, biosorbents are considered the best option for arsenic-contaminated water treatment. We have mainly focused on the need and potential of biosorbents especially the role of chitosan-based composites for arsenic removal. The chitosan-based sorbents are economically more efficient in terms of their, low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, eco-friendly nature, and reusability. The role of various modification techniques, such as physical and chemical, has also been evaluated to improve the physicochemical properties of biosorbent. The importance of adsorption kinetic and isotherm models and the role of solution pH and pHPZC for arsenic uptake from the polluted water have also been investigated. Some other potential applications of chitosan-based biosorbents have also been discussed along with its sustainability aspect. Finally, some suggestions have been highlighted for further improvements in this field.

Extremophilic Exopolysaccharides: Biotechnologies and Wastewater Remediation

Various microorganisms thrive under extreme environments, like hot springs, hydrothermal vents, deep marine ecosystems, hyperacid lakes, acid mine drainage, high UV exposure, and more. To survive against the deleterious effect of these extreme circumstances, they form a network of biofilm where exopolysaccharides (EPSs) comprise a substantial part. The EPSs are often polyanionic due to different functional groups in their structural backbone, including uronic acids, sulfated units, and phosphate groups. Altogether, these chemical groups provide EPSs with a negative charge allowing them to (a) act as ligands toward dissolved cations as well as trace, and toxic metals; (b) be tolerant to the presence of salts, surfactants, and alpha-hydroxyl acids; and (c) interface the solubilization of hydrocarbons. Owing to their unique structural and functional characteristics, EPSs are anticipated to be utilized industrially to remediation of metals, crude oil, and hydrocarbons from contaminated wastewaters, mines, and oil spills. The biotechnological advantages of extremophilic EPSs are more diverse than traditional biopolymers. The present review aims at discussing the mechanisms and strategies for using EPSs from extremophiles in industries and environment bioremediation. Additionally, the potential of EPSs as fascinating biomaterials to mediate biogenic nanoparticles synthesis and treat multicomponent water contaminants is discussed.

Use of biomass-derived adsorbents for the removal of petroleum pollutants from water: a mini-review

Over the past decades, a large amount of petroleum pollutants has been released into the environment resulting from various activities related to petrochemicals. The discharge of wastewater with petrochemicals can pose considerable risk of harm to the human health and the environment. The use of adsorbents has received much consideration across the environmental field as an effective approach for organic pollutant removal. There is a particular interest in the use of biomass adsorbent as a promising environmentally-friendly and low-cost option for removing pollutants. In this article, we present a review of biomass-derived adsorbents for the removal of petroleum pollutants from water. The features of different adsorbents such as algae, fungi, and bacteria biomasses are summarized, as is the process of removing oil and PAHs using biomass-derived adsorbents. Finally, recommendations for future study are proposed.
