Abstract
Agrowaste sources can be utilized to produce biogas by anaerobic digestion reaction. Fossil fuels have damaged the environment, while the biogas rectifies the issues related to the environment and climate change problems. Techno-economic analysis of biogas production is followed by nutrient recycling, reducing the greenhouse gas level, biorefinery purpose, and global warming effect. In addition, biogas production is mediated by different metabolic reactions, the usage of different microorganisms, purification process, upgrading process and removal of CO₂ from the gas mixture techniques. This review focuses on pre-treatment, usage of waste, production methods and application besides summarizing recent advancements in biogas production. Economical, technical, environmental properties and factors affecting biogas production as well as the future perspective of bioenergy are highlighted in the review. Among all agro-industrial wastes, sugarcane straw produced 94% of the biogas. In the future, to overcome all the problems related to biogas production and modify the production process.

Key Drivers for Non-Centrifugal Sugar Cane Research, Technological Development, and Market Linkage: A Technological Roadmap Approach for Colombia. SUGAR TECH : AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SUGAR CROPS & RELATED INDUSTRIES 2022; 25:373-385. Abstract
UNLABELLED Food science innovation depends on consumers' needs and is currently seeking functional food with health effects. Non-centrifugal cane sugar (NCS) is known for its potential health effects, but there is a lack of holistic analysis on technological advancement and socio-economic and market trends for decision-making in the development of the technology. The aim of this article was to analyse the research trends, recent patents, and market trends and niches for NCS to structure an NCS technological roadmap. Scientometric, bibliometric methods, and global and local market information on NCS were used. Comprehensive analysis of the worldwide research trends and patents on NCS processing and of the growth of the main niche markets for Colombian NCS exports in the last five years was conducted. Finally, with the information obtained, an NCS technological roadmap was structured, which can be used as a tool for planning innovation processes and supporting the development of new research using market information and new norms forged by the COVID-19 pandemic for Colombian case. Furthermore, the methodological design could be used for other NCS producer countries. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12355-022-01200-9.

Mendieta O, Castro L, Escalante H, Garfí M. Low-cost anaerobic digester to promote the circular bioeconomy in the non-centrifugal cane sugar sector: A life cycle assessment. BIORESOURCE TECHNOLOGY 2021; 326:124783. [PMID: 33535151 DOI: 10.1016/j.biortech.2021.124783] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/17/2020] [Revised: 01/20/2021] [Accepted: 01/23/2021] [Indexed: 06/12/2023]
Abstract
This study aimed to assess the potential environmental benefits of implementing low-cost digesters to valorize agro-industrial waste in the non-centrifugal cane sugar (NCS) sector. Two scenarios were considered: i) the current scenario in which organic waste and wastewater were burned outdoor and discharged into a water body, respectively; ii) the anaerobic digestion (AD) scenario, in which low-cost biodigesters were used for organic waste and wastewater treatment on-site. Results showed that low-cost digesters were a sustainable alternative to mitigate environmental impacts, especially those associated with water source pollution. Indeed, in the AD scenario, the environmental impact categories of Freshwater Eutrophication and Marine Eutrophication showed a decrease of 87.6% and 99.4%, respectively, compared to the current scenario. Thus, by treating organic waste and wastewater on-site while producing bioproducts (i.e. biofuel and biofertilizer), low-cost digesters could contribute to boosting the circular bioeconomy in the NCS production sector.
