Hydroconversion of Kraft lignin for biofuels production using bifunctional rhenium-molybdenum supported zeolitic imidazolate framework nanocatalyst

Lignin valorization: Status, challenges and opportunities

As an abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin has the potential to produce various chemicals, biofuels of interest through biorefinery activities and is expected to benefit the future circular economy. However, lignin valorization is hindered by a series of constraints such as heterogeneous polymeric nature, intrinsic recalcitrance, strong smell, dark colour, challenges in lignocelluloses fractionation and the presence of high bond dissociation enthalpies in its functional groups etc. Nowadays, industrial lignin is mostly combusted for electricity production and the recycling of inorganic compounds involved in the pulping process. Given the research and development on lignin valorization in recent years, important applications such as lignin-based hydrogels, surfactants, three-dimensional printing materials, electrodes and production of fine chemicals have been systematically reviewed. Finally, this review highlights the main constraints affecting industrial lignin valorization, possible solutions and future perspectives, in the light of its abundance and its potential applications reported in the scientific literature.

Thermogravimetric pyrolysis of onion skins: Determination of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for devolatilization stages using the combinations of isoconversional and master plot methods

Thermogravimetric pyrolysis of onions skins was studied thoroughly for the first time. Kinetic calculations of devolatilization stages were performed applying direct Arrhenius plot (DAP) method and combinations of isoconversional and Criado's Z(α) master plot (CZMP) methods. The kinetic parameters calculated using combined methods were utilized successfully to reproduce the experimental kinetic curves whereas those calculated using DAP method failed in this sense. The average E_a values of isoconversional methods were between 164.0 and 172.0 kJ/mol. The CZMP method yielded multiple F-type reaction mechanisms. The simplified kinetic models of combined methods were also developed by using single reaction mechanisms deduced from multiple reaction mechanisms. The Friedman-CZMP combination was the best option for developing simplified/unsimplified kinetic models. Determination of reaction mechanism using DAP method by searching for the highest R² value of regression equation among several candidates was found unreliable. ΔH, ΔG and ΔS values were calculated for 10 °C/min heating rate.

Production of liquid fuels from Kraft lignin over bimetallic Ni-Mo supported on ZIF-derived porous carbon catalyst

Non-noble bimetallic NiMo supported on zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived porous carbon (NiMo@FDC) catalyst for lignin depolymerization has been successfully developed. The synergism between Ni and Mo species in NiMo@FDC catalyst could promote the catalytic cleavage of C–O linkages in Kraft lignin. At a low reaction temperature of 240 °C and under 4 MPa H₂, the lignin liquefaction yield was 98.85 wt% and minimum coke yield was 1 wt%, particularly when using 10%NiMo@FDC catalyst. Additionally, at a high reaction temperature of 300 °C and under 2 MPa H₂, there was an overall yield of 86 wt% of liquid product and 42 wt% of petroleum ether soluble product. The higher heating value (HHV) increased from 27.65 MJ kg⁻¹ to 34.11 MJ kg⁻¹. In the cycling experiment, the bifunctional catalyst also demonstrated reversability and stability. The synergy of Ni hydrogenation sites and Mo coupled adsorption sites identified a possible mechanism path, which could offer considerable potential for lignin depolymerization.

The structure and synergy of NiMo@FDC catalyst have a significant effect on realizing the production of lignin-derived liquid fuels from Kraft lignin.
