Mini-review: Nanoparticles for enhanced biogas upgrading

This mini-review is intended to explore the innovative applications of nanoparticles (NPs) in biogas upgrading, emphasizing their capacity to enhance biogas quality. Numerous studies underscore how NPs, when applied during anaerobic digestion, can boost not only the quantity but also the quality of the produced biogas, leading to reduce significantly the concentration of hydrogen sulphide or even to remove it completely. Moreover, NPs are proving to be excellent alternatives as adsorbent materials, achieving up to 400 mgH2S g-1 NPs. In addition, new studies are exploring the application of NPs to increase the efficiency of biological treatments thanks to their unique features. This review also emphasizes the potential benefits and addresses the challenges that need to be overcome for these technologies to reach their full potential, ultimately contributing to the development of a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape.

Utilization of nanoparticles for biogas production focusing on process stability and effluent quality

Abstract

One of the most important techniques for converting complex organic waste into renewable energy in the form of biogas and effluent is anaerobic digestion. Several issues have been raised related to the effectiveness of the anaerobic digestion process in recent years. Hence nanoparticles (NPs) have been used widely in anaerobic digestion process for converting organic wastes into useful biogas and effluent in an effective way. This review addresses the knowledge gaps and summarizes recent researchers’ findings concentrating on the stability and effluent quality of the cattle manure anaerobic digestion process using single and combinations nanoparticle. In summary, the utilization of NPs have beneficial effects on CH4 production, process optimization, and effluent quality. Their function, as key nutrient providers, aid in the synthesis of key enzymes and co-enzymes, and thus stimulate anaerobic microorganism activities when present at an optimum concentration (e.g., Fe NPs 100 mg/L; Ni NPs 2 mg/L; Co NPs 1 mg/L). Furthermore, utilizing Fe NPs at concentrations higher than 100 mg/L is more effective at reducing H2S production than increasing CH4, whereas Ni NPs and Co NPs at concentrations greater than 2 mg/L and 1 mg/L, respectively, reduce CH4 production. Effluent with Fe and Ni NPs showed stronger fertilizer values more than Co NPs. Fe/Ni/Co NP combinations are more efficient in enhancing CH4 production than single NPs. Therefore, it is possible to utilize NPs combinations as additives to improve the effectiveness of anaerobic digestion.

Evaluation of In Vitro Cytotoxic, Genotoxic, Apoptotic, and Cell Cycle Arrest Potential of Iron-Nickel Alloy Nanoparticles

The use of iron-nickel alloy nanoparticles (Fe-Ni ANPs) is increasing daily in various fields. People are increasingly exposed to these nanoparticles for occupational and environmental reasons. Our study determined some of the effects of Fe-Ni ANP exposure and impacts on human health at the cellular level. The cytotoxic and genotoxic potentials of Fe-Ni ANPs were investigated by XTT, clonogenic, comet, and GammaH2AX analyses using Beas-2B cells. Annexin V, multicaspase, and cell cycle arrest methods were used to understand the apoptotic mechanism of action. The intracellular ROS method was used to determine the primary mechanism that leads to cytotoxic and genotoxic activity. The Fe-Ni ANPs showed cytotoxic activity with the XTT and clonogenic methods: they had genotoxic potential, as demonstrated via genotoxicity methods. It was determined that the cytotoxic effect was realized by the caspase-dependent apoptotic pathway, and the cells were stopped at the G0/G1 stage by Fe-Ni ANPs. Increased intracellular ROS due to Fe-Ni ANPs led to cytotoxic, genotoxic, and apoptotic activity. Potential risks to human health due to Fe-Ni ANPs were then demonstrated at the cellular level.

Enhancement of Anaerobic Digestion with Nanomaterials: A Mini Review

In recent years, the number of articles reporting the addition of nanomaterials to enhance the process of anaerobic digestion has exponentially increased. The benefits of this addition can be observed from different aspects: an increase in biogas production, enrichment of methane in biogas, elimination of foaming problems, a more stable and robust operation, absence of inhibition problems, etc. In the literature, one of the current focuses of research on this topic is the mechanism responsible for this enhancement. In this sense, several hypotheses have been formulated, with the effect on the redox potential caused by nanoparticles probably being the most accepted, although supplementation with trace materials coming from nanomaterials and the changes in microbial populations have been also highlighted. The types of nanomaterials tested for the improvement of anaerobic digestion is today very diverse, although metallic and, especially, iron-based nanoparticles, are the most frequently used. In this paper, the abovementioned aspects are systematically reviewed. Another challenge that is treated is the lack of works reported in the continuous mode of operation, which hampers the commercial use of nanoparticles in full-scale anaerobic digesters.

Analytical and regulatory considerations to mitigate highly hazardous toxins from environmental matrices

The ubiquitous occurrence, toxicological influence, and bioaccumulation of toxic entities, e.g., pesticides and toxic elements in the environment, biota, and humans, directly or indirectly, are posing severe social, ecological, and human health concerns. Much attention has been given to the rising bioaccumulation of toxins and their adverse impact on various environmental matrices. For example, the inappropriate and exacerbated use of xenobiotics and related hazardous substances have caused the deterioration of the agricultural environment, e.g., fertile soils where plants are grown. Moreover, the harmful toxins have negatively impacted human health through the trophic chains. However, the analytical and regulatory considerations to effectively monitor and mitigate any or many pesticides and toxic elements from environmental matrices are still lacking in the existing literature. For decades, the scientific community has overseen the consequences caused by pollutants, however, the improvement of analytical detection methods and regulatory considerations are not yet fully covered. This review covers the notable literature gap by stressing the development and deployment of robust analytical and regulatory considerations for an efficient abatement of hazardous substances. Following detailed information on occurrence, toxicological influence, and bioaccumulation of pesticides and toxic elements, the most relevant analytical detection tools and regulatory measures are given herein, with suitable examples, to mitigate or reduce the damage caused by these pollutants.

Overview on agricultural potentials of biogas slurry (BGS): applications, challenges, and solutions

The residual slurry obtained from the anaerobic digestion (AD) of biogas feed substrates such as livestock dung is known as BGS. BGS is a rich source of nutrients and bioactive compounds having an important role in establishing diverse microbial communities, accelerating nutrient use efficiency, and promoting overall soil and plant health management. However, challenges such as lower C/N transformation rates, ammonia volatilization, high pH, and bulkiness limit their extensive applications. Here we review the strategies of BGS valorization through microbial and organomineral amendments. Such cohesive approaches can serve dual purposes viz. green organic inputs for sustainable agriculture practices and value addition of biomass waste. The literature survey has been conducted to identify the knowledge gaps and critically analyze the latest technological interventions to upgrade the BGS for potential applications in agriculture fields. The major points are as follows: (1) Bio/nanotechnology-inspired approaches could serve as a constructive platform for integrating BGS with other organic materials to exploit microbial diversity dynamics through multi-substrate interactions. (2) Advancements in next-generation sequencing (NGS) pave an ideal pathway to study the complex microflora and translate the potential information into bioprospecting of BGS to ameliorate existing bio-fertilizer formulations. (3) Nanoparticles (NPs) have the potential to establish a link between syntrophic bacteria and methanogens through direct interspecies electron transfer and thereby contribute towards improved efficiency of AD. (4) Developments in techniques of nutrient recovery from the BGS facilities' negative GHGs emissions and energy-efficient models for nitrogen removal. (5) Possibilities of formulating low-cost substrates for mass-multiplication of beneficial microbes, bioprospecting of such microbes to produce bioactive compounds of anti-phytopathogenic activities, and developing BGS-inspired biofertilizer formulations integrating NPs, microbial inoculants, and deoiled seed cakes have been examined.

Effect of Engineered Biomaterials and Magnetite on Wastewater Treatment: Biogas and Kinetic Evaluation

In this study, the principle of sustaining circular economy is presented as a way of recovering valuable resources from wastewater and utilizing its energy potential via anaerobic digestion (AD) of municipality wastewater. Biostimulation of the AD process was investigated to improve its treatability efficiency, biogas production, and kinetic stability. Addressing this together with agricultural waste such as eggshells (CE), banana peel (PB), and calcined banana peels (BI) were employed and compared to magnetite (Fe₃O₄) as biostimulation additives via 1 L biochemical methane potential tests. With a working volume of 0.8 L (charge with inoculum to substrate ratio of 3:5 v/v) and 1.5 g of the additives, each bioreactor was operated at a mesophilic temperature of 40 °C for 30 days while being compared to a control bioreactor. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) analysis was used to reveal the absorbent’s morphology at high magnification of 10 kx and surface pore size of 20.8 µm. The results showed over 70% biodegradation efficiency in removing the organic contaminants (chemical oxygen demand, color, and turbidity) as well as enhancing the biogas production. Among the setups, the bioreactor with Fe₃O₄ additives was found to be the most efficient, with an average daily biogas production of 40 mL/day and a cumulative yield of 1117 mL/day. The kinetic dynamics were evaluated with the cumulative biogas produced by each bioreactor via the first order modified Gompertz and Chen and Hashimoto kinetic models. The modified Gompertz model was found to be the most reliable, with good predictability.

Recent innovations of nanotechnology in water treatment: A comprehensive review

Environmental pollution from organic and inorganic pollutants poses a threat to the ecosystem. Pollutant's prevalence and persistence have increased significantly in recent years. In order to enhance the quality of naturally accessible water to a level suitable for human consumption, a number of techniques have been employed. In this context, the use of cutting-edge nanotechnology to classical process engineering paves the way for technical encroachments in advanced water and wastewater technology. Nanotechnology has the potential to ameliorate the quality, availability, and viability of water supplies in the long run by facilitating reuse, recycling and remediation of water. The promising role of nanotechnology in wastewater remediation is highlighted in this paper, which also covers current advancements in nanotechnology-mediated remediation systems. Moreover, nano-based materials such as nano-adsorbents, photocatalysts, nano-metals and nanomembranes are discussed in this review of recent breakthroughs in nanotechnologies for water contaminant remediation.

Impact of electro-conductive nanoparticles additives on anaerobic digestion performance - A review

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biochemical process that converts waste organic matter into energy-rich biogas with methane as the main component. Addition of electric electro-conductive, such as that nanoparticles (NP), has been shown to improve biogas generation. Interspecies electron transfer and direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) using conductive materials is one of the mechanisms responsible for observed increases in CH₄. This article discusses the effect of the type and size of electro-conductive NPs on improving microbial degradation within AD systems, as well as the effect of electro-conductive NPs on microbial community shifts and syntrophic metabolism. Limitations and future perspectives of using NPs in an AD system is also discussed.
