Abstract
This study evaluated the hydrogen production potential through lactate-driven dark fermentation (LD-DF) of organic wastes from solid waste treatment plants, including the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), mixed sewage sludge, and two OFMSW leachates. In initial batch fermentations, only OFMSW supported a significant hydrogen yield (70.1 ± 7.7 NmL-H2/g-VS added) among the tested feedstocks. Lactate acted as an important hydrogen precursor, requiring the presence of carbohydrates for sequential two-step lactate-type fermentation. The impact of operational pH (5.5-6.5) and initial total solids (TS) concentration (5-12.5 % w/w) was also evaluated using OFMSW as substrate, obtaining hydrogen yields ranging from 6.6 to 55.9 NmL-H2/g-VSadded. The highest yield occurred at 6.5 pH and 7.5 % TS. The LD-DF pathway was indicated to be present under diverse pH and TS conditions, supported by employing a specialized microbial consortium capable of performing LD-DF, along with the observed changes in lactate levels during fermentation.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) coexist with Clostridium spp. in hydrogen production processes from complex substrates; however, the role of LAB is still unclear. This study analyzed the fermentation products in a wide range of initial pH (pHi, 5.5-6.9) and total solids (TS%, 8-22%) to determine the activity of these two microbial groups over time (from 24 to 120 h). Agave bagasse served as the feedstock for hydrogen production via consolidated bioprocess (CBP), while the inoculum source was the indigenous mature microbiota. In the early stage of the CBP, hydrogen production from lactic acid occurred only at pHi ≥ 6.0 (ρ = 0.0004) with no effect of TS%; lactic acid accumulated below this pHi value. In this stage, lactic acid production positively correlated with a first cluster of LAB represented by Paucilactobacillus (r = 0.64) and Bacillus (r = 0.81). After 72 h, hydrogen production positively correlated with a second group of LAB led by Enterococcus (r = 0.71) together with the hydrogen producer Clostridium sensu stricto 1 (r = 0.8) and the acetogen Syntrophococcus (r = 0.52) with the influence of TS% (ρ < 0.0001). A further experiment showed that buffering the pH to 6.5 increased and lengthened the lactic acid production, doubling the hydrogen production from 20 to 41 mL H2/gTSadded. This study confirmed the prevalence of distinct groups of LAB over time, whose microbial activity promoted different routes of hydrogen production.

Abstract
Microbial communities in dark fermentation continuous systems are affected by substrate type, concentration, and product accumulation (e.g., H2 and CO2). Metatranscriptomics and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were used to assess how high organic loading rates (OLR) from 60 to 160 g total carbohydrates (TC)/L-d modify the microbial community diversity and expression of key dark fermentative genes. Overall, the microbial communities were composed of H2-producing bacteria (Clostridium butyricum), homoacetogens (Clostridium luticellarii), and lactic acid bacteria (Enteroccocus gallinarum and Leuconostoc mesenteroides). Quantification through qPCR showed that the abundance of genes encoding the formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase (fthfs, homoacetogens) and hydrogenase (hydA, H2-producing bacteria) was strongly associated with the OLR and H2 production performance. Similarly, increasing the OLR influenced the abundance of the gene transcripts responsible for H2 production and homoacetogenesis. To evaluate the effect of decreasing the H2 partial pressure, silicone oil was added to the reactor at an OLR of 138 and 160 g TC/L-d, increasing the production of H2, the copies of genes codifying for hydA and fthfs, and the genes transcripts related to H2 production and homoacetogenesis. Moreover, the metatranscriptomic analysis also showed that lactate-type fermentation and dark fermentation simultaneously occurred without compromising the reactor performance for H2 production.

Abstract
The functional role of lactate (HLac), as a co-substrate along with glucose (Glu) as well as an electron donor for the synthesis of caproic acid (HCa), a medium chain fatty acid (MCFAs) was studied. A varied HLac and Glu ratios were thus investigated in fed-batch anaerobic reactors (R1-R5) operated at pH 6 with a heat-treated anaerobic consortium. R1 and R5 were noted as controls and operated with sole Glu and HLac, respectively. Strategically, ethanol (HEth) was additionally supplemented as co-electron donor after the production of short chain carboxylic acids (SCCAs) for chain elongation in all the reactors. The reactor operated with HLac and Glu in a ratio of 0.25:0.75 (1.25 g/L (HLac) and 3.75 g/L (Glu)) showed the highest HCa production of 1.86 g/L. R5 operated with solely HLac yielded propionic acid (HPr) as the major product which further led to the higher valeric acid (HVa) production of 1.1 g/L within the reactor. Butyric acid (HBu) was observed in R1, which used Glu as carbon source alone indicating the importance of HLac as electron co-donor. Clostridium observed as the most dominant genera in shotgun metagenome sequencing in R2 and R3, the reactors that produced the highest HCa in comparison to other studied reactors. The study thus provided insight into the importance of substrate and electron donor and their supplementation strategies during the production of MCFAs.

Abstract
The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the continuous lactate-driven dark fermentation (LD-DF) of food waste (FW) was investigated. The robustness of the bioprocess against feast/famine perturbations was also explored. The stepwise HRT decrease from 24 to 16 and 12 h in a continuously stirred tank fermenter fed with simulated restaurant FW impacted on hydrogen production rate (HPR). The optimal HRT of 16 h supported a HPR of 4.2 L H2/L-d. Feast/famine perturbations caused by 12-h feeding interruptions led to a remarkable peak in HPR up to 19.2 L H2/L-d, albeit the process became stable at 4.3 L H2/L-d following perturbation. The occurrence of LD-DF throughout the operation was endorsed by metabolites analysis. Particularly, hydrogen production positively correlated with lactate consumption and butyrate production. Overall, the FW LD-DF process was highly sensitive but resilient against transient feast/famine perturbations, supporting high-rate HPRs under optimal HRTs.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the impact of utilizing lactic acid fermentation (LAF) as storage method of food waste (FW) prior to dark fermentation (DF). LAF of FW was carried out in batches at six temperatures (4 °C, 10 °C, 23 °C, 35 °C, 45 °C, and 55 °C) for 15 days followed by biological hydrogen potential (BHP) tests. Different storage temperatures resulted in different metabolites distribution, with either lactate or ethanol being dominant (159.2 ± 20.6 mM and 234.4 ± 38.2 mM respectively), but no negative impact on BHP (averaging at 94.6 ± 25.1 mL/gVS). Maximum hydrogen production rate for stored FW improved by at least 57%. Microbial analysis showed dominance of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) namely Lactobacillus sp., Lactococcus sp., Weisella sp., Streptococcus sp. and Bacillus sp. after LAF. Clostridium sp. emerged after DF, co-existing with LAB. Coupling LAF as a storage method was demonstrated as a novel strategy of FW management for DF, for a wide range of temperatures.

Abstract
Harnessing fruit-vegetable waste (FVW) as a resource to produce hydrogen via dark fermentation (DF) embraces the circular economy concept. However, there is still a need to upgrade continuous FVW-DF bioprocessing to enhance hydrogen production rates (HPR). This study aims to investigate the influence of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the DF of FVW by mixed culture. A stirred tank reactor under continuous mesophilic conditions was operated for 47 days with HRT stepwise reductions from 24 to 6 h, leading to organic loading rates between 47 and 188 g volatile solids (VS)/L-d. The optimum HRT of 9 h resulted in an unprecedented HPR from FVW of 11.8 NL/L-d, with a hydrogen yield of 95.6 NmL/g VS fed. Based on an overarching inspection of hydrogen production in conjunction with organic acids and carbohydrates analyses, it was hypothesized that the high FVW-to-biohydrogen conversion rate achieved was powered by lactate metabolism.

Abstract
Though deemed a prospective method, the bioconversion of organic waste to biohydrogen via dark fermentation (DF) has multiple drawbacks and limitations. Technological difficulties of hydrogen fermentation may, in part, be eliminated by making DF a viable method for biohythane production. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a little-known organic waste spurring a growing interest in the municipal sector; its characteristics indicate the feasibility of its use as a substrate for biohydrogen production. The major goal of the present study was to determine the effect of AGS pretreatment with solidified carbon dioxide (SCO2) on the yield of H2 (biohythane) production during anaerobic digestion (AD). It was found that an increasing dose of SCO2 caused an increase in concentrations of COD, N-NH4+, and P-PO43- in the supernatant at the SCO2/AGS volume ratios from 0 to 0.3. The AGS pretreatment at SCO2/AGS ratios within the range of 0.1-0.3 was shown to enable the production of biogas with over 8% H2 (biohythane) content. The highest yield of biohythane production, reaching 481 ± 23 cm3/gVS, was obtained at the SCO2/AGS ratio of 0.3. This variant produced 79.0 ± 6% CH4 and 8.9 ± 2% H2. The higher SCO2 doses applied caused a significant decrease in the pH value of AGS, modifying the anaerobic bacterial community to the extent that diminished anaerobic digestion performance.

Abstract
pH is notably known as the main variable defining distinct metabolic pathways during sugarcane vinasse dark fermentation. However, different alkalinizing (e.g. sodium bicarbonate; NaHCO3) and/or neutralizing (e.g. sodium hydroxide; NaOH) approaches were never directly compared to understand the associated impacts on metabolite profiles. Three anaerobic structured-bed reactors (AnSTBR) were operated in parallel and subjected to equivalent operational parameters, except for the pH control: an acidogenic-sulfidogenic (R1; NaOH + NaHCO3) designed to remove sulfur compounds (sulfate and sulfide), a hydrogenogenic (R2; NaOH) aimed to optimize biohydrogen (bioH2) production, and a strictly fermentative system without pH adjustment (R3) to mainly evaluate lactic acid (HLa) production and other soluble metabolites. NaHCO3 dosing triggered advantages not only for sulfate reduction (up to 56%), but also to enhance the stripping of sulfide to the gas phase (75-96% of the theoretical sulfide produced) by the high and constant biogas flow resulting from the CO2 released during NaHCO3 dissociation. Meanwhile, molasses-based vinasse presented higher potential for bioH2 (up to 4545 mL-H2 L-1 d-1) and HLa (up to 4800 mg L-1) production by butyric-type and capnophilic lactic fermentation pathways. Finally, heterolactic fermentation was the main metabolic route established when no pH control was provided (R3), as indicated by the high production of both HLa (up to 4315 mg L-1) and ethanol (1987 mg L-1). Hence, one single substrate (from which one single source of inoculum was originated) offers a wide range of metabolic possibilities to be exploited, providing substantial versatility to the application of anaerobic digestion in sugarcane biorefineries.

Abstract
To improve the catalytic efficiency and stability of hydrogen-producing bacteria (HPB), the Fe3O4 nanoparticles modified Aspergillus tubingensis mycelial pellets (AT)-based anaerobic granular sludge (Fe3O4@AT-AGS) was developed. The Fe3O4@AT-AGS protected flora with abundant extracellular polymeric substances, which increased diversity and stability of flora in early and late stage. The porous structure enhanced mass transfer efficiency, thus promoted dominant flora transferred from lactate-producing bacteria (LPB) to HPB in middle stage. The Fe3O4 improved biomass of mycelial by 19.5 %. The enhancement of dehydrogenase and conductivity of Fe3O4 increased the HPB proportion, electron transfer, and butyrate fermentation in early and middle stage. The Fe3O4@AT-AGS enhanced HPB abundance, dehydrogenase activity and stability, and significantly inhibited propionate fermentation. The biohydrogen production and yield respectively reached 2792 mL/L and 2.56 mol/mol glucose. Clostridium sensu stricto 11 as dominant microbes reached 77.3 %. This provided strategy for alleviating inhibition of LPB and improving competitiveness of HPB during biohydrogen production.

Abstract
This review investigates the development of bioproducts from biomass and their contribution towards net zero carbon emissions. The promising future of biomasses conversion techniques to produce bioproducts was reviewed. The advances in anaerobic digestion as a biochemical conversion technique have been critically studied and contribute towards carbon emissions mitigation. Different applications of microalgae biomass towards carbon neutrality were comprehensively discussed, and several research findings have been tabulated in this review. The carbon footprints of wastewater treatment plants were studied, and bioenergy utilisation from sludge production was shown to mitigate carbon footprints. The carbon-sinking capability of microalgae has also been outlined. Furthermore, integrated conversion processes have shown to enhance bioproducts generation yield and quality. The anaerobic digestion/pyrolysis integrated process was promising, and potential substrates have been suggested for future research. Lastly, challenges and future perspectives of bioproducts were outlined for a contribution towards meeting carbon neutrality.

Abstract
Dark fermentation (DF) is a promising process for mitigating environmental pollution and producing “green” H2. However, wider implementation and scaling of this technology is hampered by insufficient process efficiency. In this work, for the first time, the effect of innovative pretreatment of cheese whey (CW) in a vortex layer apparatus (VLA) on characteristics and DF of CW was studied. Pretreatment in VLA resulted in a heating of the CW, slight increase in pH, volatile fatty acids, iron, and reduction in fat, sugar, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The biochemical hydrogen potential test and analysis of H2 production kinetics confirmed the significant potential of using VLA in enhancement of dark fermentative H2 production. The maximum potential H2 yield (202.4 mL H2/g COD or 3.4 mol H2/mol hexose) was obtained after pretreatment in VLA for 45 s and was 45.8% higher than the control. The maximum H2 production rate after 5 and 45 s of pretreatment was 256.5 and 237.2 mL H2/g COD/d, respectively, which is 8.06 and 7.46 times higher than in the control. The lag phase was more than halved as a function of the pretreatment time. The pretreatment time positively correlated with the total final concentration of Fe2+ and Fe3+ and negatively with the lag phase, indicating a positive effect of pretreatment in VLA on the start of H2 production.

Abstract
This study aims at investigating the influence of operational parameters on biohydrogen production from fruit-vegetable waste (FVW) via lactate-driven dark fermentation. Mesophilic batch fermentations were conducted at different pH (5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, and non-controlled), total solids (TS) contents (5, 7, and 9%) and initial cell biomass concentrations (18, 180, and 1800 mg VSS/L). Higher hydrogen yields and rates were attained with more neutral pH values and low TS concentrations, whereas higher biomass densities enabled higher production rates and avoided wide variations in hydrogen production. A marked lactate accumulation (still at neutral pH) in the fermentation broth was closely associated with hydrogen inhibition. In contrast, enhanced hydrogen productions matched with much lower lactate accumulations (even it was negligible in some fermentations) along with the acetate and butyrate co-production but not with carbohydrates removal. At pH 7, 5% TS, and 1800 mg VSS/L, 49.5 NmL-H2/g VSfed and 976.4 NmL-H2/L-h were attained.

Abstract
This study evaluated the combined impact of salinity (2.5, 13, and 19.3 g NaCl/L) and inoculum pretreatment (acid/alkali) on the genomic and metabolic profiles of mesophilic fermentative bacteria for hydrogen (H2) production from food waste. Experimental results revealed that acid-treated inoculum showed the highest H2 yield (201.12 ± 13.84 mL H2/g of volatile solids added) under medium salinity levels compared to other experimental conditions. A 7-56% increase in H2 yield was observed for pretreated inoculum than untreated inoculum. Genomic analysis and metabolic pattern revealed that the H2 production was mainly through Clostridial-type fermentation under medium to high salinity levels, whereas Enterococcus-type fermentation under low salinity levels. Further, the genomic analysis uncovered that phyla Firmicutes (69.71-96.81%) and genus Clostridium sensu stricto 1 (33.28-94.04%) dominated during the exponential gas production phase. Overall, this study showed the significance of inoculum pretreatment for the bioconversion of food waste at different salinity levels.

Abstract
This study aimed to characterize the prokaryotic community and putative microbial interactions involved in hydrogen (H2) production during the dark fermentation (DF) process, applying principal components analysis (PCA) to correlate changes in operational, physicochemical, and biological variables. For this purpose, a continuous stirred-tank reactor-type digester fed with tequila vinasses was operated at 24, 18, and 12 h of hydraulic retention times (HRTs) to apply organic loading rates of 20, 36, and 54 g-COD L-1 d-1, corresponding to stages I, II, and III, respectively. Results indicated high population dynamics for Archaea during the DF process toward a decrease in total sequences from 6299 to 99. Concerning the Bacteria community, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were dominant reaching a relative abundance of 57.67%, while dominant H2-producing bacteria (HPB) decreased from 25.76% to 21.06% during stage III. Putative competitive exclusion mechanisms such as competition for substrates, bacteriocins production, and micronutrient depletion carried out by Archaea and non-H2-producing bacteria (non-HPB), especially LAB, could negatively impact the dominance of HPB such as Ethanoligenens harbinense and Clostridium tyrobutyricum. As a consequence, low maximal volumetric H2 production rate (672 mL-H2 L-1 d-1) and yield (3.88 mol-H2 assimilated sugars-1) were obtained. The global scenario obtained by PCA correlations suggested that C. tyrobutyricum positively impacted H2 molar yield through butyrate fermentation using the butyryl-CoA:acetate CoA transferase pathway, while the most abundant HPB E. harbinense decreased its relative abundance at the shortest HRT toward the dominance of non-HPB. This study provides new insights into the microbial interactions and helps to better understand the DF performance for H2 production using tequila vinasses as substrate. KEY POINTS: • E. harbinense and C. tyrobutyricum were responsible for H2 production. • Clostridiales used acetate and butyrate fermentations for H2 production. • LAB won the competition for sugars against Clostridiales during DF. • Putative bacteriocins production and micronutrients depletion could favor LAB.

Abstract
This study proposed a lactate-based two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) process to enhance bioenergy production rate from food waste (FW) and investigated the effect of inoculum addition and culture pH on hydrolysis-acidogenesis and further methanization. A series of batch fermentations were performed with an enriched lactate-producing consortium and without inoculum addition under controlled (5.7) and uncontrolled pH (initial 6.7) conditions. The interplay between the studied factors dictated the fate of lactate, particularly if it is produced and accumulated in the fermentation broth or is consumed by butyrogenic bacteria. Only the self-fermentation of FW with uncontrolled pH resulted in lactate accumulation (0.2 g/g volatile solid (VS) fed) with limited off-gas production (0.32 NL/L) and VS losses (≈16%). Such lactate-rich broth was successfully digested through biochemical methane potential tests, resulting in a maximum bioenergy production rate of 2891 MJ/ton-VS fed per day, which was two-fold higher compared to that achieved by one-stage AD.

Abstract
AIMS The objective of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory activity of compounds secreted by bacteria isolated from a hydrogen-producing bioreactor to understand how these microorganisms interact in this community. METHODS AND RESULTS In vitro inhibitory assays were performed using samples secreted by bacteria subject to different treatments to determine if their inhibitory effect was due to organic acids, non-proteinaceous compounds, or bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS). Bacterial isolated were suppressed 43%, 30%, and 27% by neutralized, precipitated, and non-neutralized cell-free supernatants, respectively. Non-hydrogen producers (Non-H2 P) LAB (Lactobacillus plantarum LB1, L. pentosus LB7, Pediococcus acidilactici LB4) and hydrogen producers (H2 P) LAB (Enterococcus faecium F) were inhibited by the production of organic acids, non-proteinaceous compounds, and BLIS. Meanwhile, the obligate anaerobe H2 P (Clostridium beijerinckii B) inhibited by the production of non-proteinaceous compounds and BLIS. The presence of BLIS was confirmed when proteolytic enzymes affected the inhibitory activity of secreted proteins in values ranging from 20 to 42%. The BLIS produced by L. plantarum LB1, P. acidilactici LB4, L. pentosus LB7, and E. faecium F showed molecular masses of ~ 11 kDa, 25 kDa, 20 kDa, and 11 kDa, respectively. CONCLUSIONS It was demonstrated antagonistic interactions between Lactobacillus- Enterococcus, and Pediococcus-Enterococcus species, generated by the secretion of organic acids, non-proteinaceous compounds, and BLIS. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY We report the interactions between LAB isolated from hydrogen-producing bioreactors. These interactions might impact the dynamics of the microbial population during hydrogen generation. Our work lays a foundation for strategies that allow controlling bacteria that can affect hydrogen production.

Enhanced Fermentative Hydrogen Production from Food Waste in Continuous Reactor after Butyric Acid Treatment. ENERGIES 2022. Abstract
End-product accumulation during dark fermentation leads to process instability and hydrogen production inhibition. To overcome this constraint, microbial community adaptation to butyric acid can induce acid tolerance and thus enhance the hydrogen yields; however, adaptation and selection of appropriate microbial communities remains uncertain when dealing with complex substrates in a continuous fermentation mode. To address this question, a reactor fed in continuous mode with food waste (organic loading rate of 60 gVS·L·d−1; 12 h hydraulic retention time) was first stressed for 48 h with increasing concentrations of butyric acid (up to 8.7 g·L−1). Performances were compared with a control reactor (unstressed) for 13 days. During 6 days in a steady-state, the pre-stressed reactor produced 2.2 ± 0.2 LH2·L·d−1, which was 48% higher than in the control reactor (1.5 ± 0.2 LH2·L·d−1). The pretreatment also affected the metabolites’ distribution. The pre-stressed reactor presented a higher production of butyric acid (+44%) achieving up to 3.8 ± 0.3 g·L−1, a lower production of lactic acid (−56%), and an enhancement of substrate conversion (+9%). The performance improvement was attributed to the promotion of Clostridium guangxiense, a hydrogen -producer, with a relative abundance increasing from 22% in the unstressed reactor to 52% in the stressed reactor.

Abstract
Over four billion tons of foods are produced annually on the planet, and about a third is wasted. A minimal part of this waste is incinerated or sent to landfills for treatment, avoiding contamination and diseases; the rest is disposed of elsewhere. The current review was aimed at broadening the panorama on the potential of agroindustrial by-products in applications such as biofuels, biomaterials, biocompounds, pharmaceuticals, and food ingredients. It also exposes the main chemical, physical, and biochemical treatments for converting by-products into raw materials with added value through low environmental impact processes. The value of agroindustrial waste is limited due to the scarce information available. There is a need for further research in unexplored areas to find ways of adding value to these by-products and minimizing their contamination. Instead of throwing away or burning by-products, they can be transformed into useful materials such as polymers, fuels, antioxidants, phenols, and lipids, which will effectively reduce food waste and environmental impact.

Abstract
The technical feasibility of valorizing tequila vinasse (TV), a wastewater with high pollution potential, through the production of biogenic hydrogen via dark fermentation, has long been proven in diverse lab-scale reactors that were operated either in batch or continuous mode. However, such systems have mainly been tested with diluted streams and nutrient supplementation, hindering the techno-economic attractiveness of the TV-to-hydrogen concept at large scale. In this study, the feasibility of producing hydrogen from high-strength undiluted TV with no added extra nutrients was evaluated under batch mesophilic conditions. Additionally, the use of two different acidogenic inocula obtained either by heat or heat-aeration pretreatment was investigated to get a greater understanding of the effect of inoculum type on the process. The results obtained showed that the TV utilized herein contained macro- and micro-nutrients high enough to support the hydrogenogenic activity of both cultures, entailing average hydrogen yields of 2.4–2.6 NL H2/L vinasse and maximum hydrogen production rates of 1.4–1.9 NL H2/L-d. Interestingly, the consumption of lactate and acetate with the concomitant production of butyrate was observed as the main hydrogen-producing route regardless of the inoculum, pointing out the relevance of the lactate-driven dark fermentative process. Clostridium beijerinckii was ascertained as key bacteria, but only in association with microorganisms belonging to the genera Enterobacter and Klebsiella, as revealed by phylogenetic analyses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study focuses on the processes occurring during the acidogenic step of anaerobic digestion, especially resulting from nutritional interactions between dark fermentation (DF) bacteria and lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Previously, we have confirmed that DF microbial communities (MCs) that fed on molasses are able to convert lactate and acetate to butyrate. The aims of the study were to recognize the biodiversity of DF-MCs able and unable to convert lactate and acetate to butyrate and to define the conditions for the transformation. RESULTS MCs sampled from a DF bioreactor were grown anaerobically in mesophilic conditions on different media containing molasses or sucrose and/or lactate and acetate in five independent static batch experiments. The taxonomic composition (based on 16S_rRNA profiling) of each experimental MC was analysed in reference to its metabolites and pH of the digestive liquids. In the samples where the fermented media contained carbohydrates, the two main tendencies were observed: (i) a low pH (pH ≤ 4), lactate and ethanol as the main fermentation products, MCs dominated with Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Leuconostoc and Fructobacillus was characterized by low biodiversity; (ii) pH in the range 5.0-6.0, butyrate dominated among the fermentation products, the MCs composed mainly of Clostridium (especially Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12), Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Prevotella. The biodiversity increased with the ability to convert acetate and lactate to butyrate. The MC processing exclusively lactate and acetate showed the highest biodiversity and was dominated by Clostridium (especially Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12). LAB were reduced; other genera such as Terrisporobacter, Lachnoclostridium, Paraclostridium or Sutterella were found. Butyrate was the main metabolite and pH was 7. Shotgun metagenomic analysis of the selected butyrate-producing MCs independently on the substrate revealed C.tyrobutyricum as the dominant Clostridium species. Functional analysis confirmed the presence of genes encoding key enzymes of the fermentation routes. CONCLUSIONS Batch tests revealed the dynamics of metabolic activity and composition of DF-MCs dependent on fermentation conditions. The balance between LAB and the butyrate producers and the pH values were shown to be the most relevant for the process of lactate and acetate conversion to butyrate. To close the knowledge gaps is to find signalling factors responsible for the metabolic shift of the DF-MCs towards lactate fermentation. Video Abstract.

Abstract
The study aimed to identify interspecies interactions within a native microbial community present in a hydrogen-producing bioreactor fed with two wheat straw cultivars. The relationships between the microbial community members were studied building a canonical correspondence analysis and corroborated through in vitro assays. The results showed that the bioreactor reached a stable hydrogen production of ca. 86 mL/kg·d in which the cultivar change did not affect the average performance. Lactobacillus and Clostridium dominated throughout the whole operation period where butyric acid was the main metabolite. A canonical correspondence analysis correlated positively Lactobacillus with hydrogen productivity and hydrogen-producing bacteria like Clostridium and Ruminococaceae. Agar diffusion testing of isolated strains confirmed that Lactobacillus inhibited the growth of Enterococcus, but not of Clostridium. We suggest that the positive interaction between Lactobacillus and Clostridium is generated by a division of labor for degrading the lignocellulosic substrate in which Lactobacillus produces lactic acid from the sugar fermentation while Clostridium quickly uses this lactic acid to produce hydrogen and butyric acid. The significance of this work lies in the fact that different methodological approaches confirm a positive association in the duo Lactobacillus-Clostridium in a bioreactor with stable hydrogen production from a complex substrate.
