Husbandry waste derived coralline-like composite biomass material for efficient heavy metal ions removal

Fabrication and application of chitosan-based biomass composites with fire safety, water treatment and antibacterial properties

In this work, a biomass composite material (CS@NC@PA-Na) was prepared from chitosan (CS), nano-cellulose (NC) and sodium phytate (PA-Na). The prepared products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The fire/water safety and antimicrobial properties of the CS@NC@PA-Na were fully studied. The results indicated CS@NC@PA-Na (50 mg) could effectively reduce the concentration of methyl orange by 85 % under 30 min adsorption. Meanwhile, only 5 wt% CS@NC@PA-Na could increase the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of epoxy resin composite from 24.5 to 30.1 %, and decrease the peak heat/smoke release rate by 29.5 and 33.3 %, respectively. Moreover, CS@NC@PA-Na also exhibited excellent antibacterial effect. This work provides an efficient, feasible and eco-friendly route for large-scale production of multi-functional CS-based biomass materials that could be used in the fields of fire safety and environmental conservation.

Fly-antennae-inspired biomass-based fluorescent platform for NH3 quantitative detection and visual real-time monitoring of seafood spoilage

Traditional strategies for quantitative detection of NH₃ and monitoring of seafood spoilage still have some pervasive issues of cumbersome operation, time-consuming, high-cost, and inefficient real-time monitoring, and visualization. Integration of biomass-based materials and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence probes exhibit conceivable potential in seafood detection and environmental monitoring. Herein, a fly-antennae-inspired biomass-based solid-state fluorescent platform (PAA-FP) with effective, easy-to-use, reusable, low-cost and highly sensitive characteristics is nanoengineered for NH₃ quantitative detection (detection limit = 0.5 ppm) and visual real-time monitoring of seafood spoilage using smartphones. The PAA-FP possesses an anticipative "fly-antennae-like" microstructure and offers selective recognition of NH₃ by naked eyes in daylight with excellent solid-state fluorescence properties. Moreover, PAA-FP is simply reused at least 5 times after AcOH fumigation. Comprehensive application experiments substantiate that PAA-FP successfully achieves quantitative detection of NH₃ and realizes the visual real-time daylight monitoring of food spoilage using a simple color recognizing smartphone software. The present study demonstrates an effective fabrication strategy to explore various multifunctional biomass-based materials for sensing hazardous and noxious substances.

Recent advances in waste-derived functional materials for wastewater remediation

Water pollution is a major concern for public health and a sustainable future. It is urgent to purify wastewater with effective methods to ensure a clean water supply. Most wastewater remediation techniques rely heavily on functional materials, and cost-effective materials are thus highly favorable. Of great environmental and economic significance, developing waste-derived materials for wastewater remediation has undergone explosive growth recently. Herein, the applications of waste (e.g., biowastes, electronic wastes, and industrial wastes)-derived materials for wastewater purification are comprehensively reviewed. Sophisticated strategies for turning wastes into functional materials are firstly summarized, including pyrolysis and combustion, hydrothermal synthesis, sol-gel method, co-precipitation, and ball milling. Moreover, critical experimental parameters within different design strategies are discussed. Afterward, recent applications of waste-derived functional materials in adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, electrochemical treatment, and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are analyzed. We mainly focus on the development of efficient functional materials via regulating the internal and external characteristics of waste-derived materials, and the material's property-performance correlation is also emphasized. Finally, the key future perspectives in the field of waste-derived materials-driven water remediation are highlighted.

Adsorption of dyes methyl violet and malachite green from aqueous solution on multi-step modified rice husk powder in single and binary systems: Characterization, adsorption behavior and physical interpretations

A novel modified rice husk (MRH) has been prepared for removing cationic dyes in both single system and binary system. SEM-EDS, FT-IR, XRD and XPS were used to characterize the physical and chemical properties of MRH. It showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of MRH for methyl violet (MV) and malachite green (MG) in single system was 154.49 and 996.97 mg g^-1, while in binary system was 530.94 and 408.58 mg g^-1, respectively. The experimental results showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was better to describe the kinetic behavior of MV and MG adsorption. By using double layer adsorption model, we found that the n_D for MV adsorption were 2.52, 2.65 and 3.34 at 298, 308 and 318 K, respectively, and the n_D for MG adsorption were 4.59, 4.85 and 4.30, respectively. These results illustrated that multiple dye molecules were adsorbed on one adsorption site in non-parallel direction, indicating that the adsorption of dyes is multi-molecular mechanism. Furthermore, synergistic and antagonistic adsorption might be existed simultaneously in binary system. In summary, MRH has been shown well adsorption properties and reusability and our finding might provide a new idea for developing low-cost, efficient and reusable adsorbent to remove dyes from wastewater.

Biofiber waste derived zwitterionic and photocatalytic dye adsorbent: Switchable selectivity, in-situ degradation and multi-tasking application

Dye wastewater and discarded biofiber have brought huge pressure to sustainable developments of ecology and economy. By utilizing dopamine chemistry and benzophenone mediated "grafting onto" atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), this work reported a biomass adsorbent containing discarded wool substrate, photocatalytic PDA coating and zwitterionic polymer brushes for dyes removal. The grafted zwitterionic polymer brushes impart the material with not only high adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate, but also switchable adsorption selectivity and pH-controlled regeneration capability. Benefiting from such outstanding adsorption performance and excellent free-standing property, the adsorbent could fulfill diversified needs of both static and dynamic adsorptions. Under daylight, the constructed photocatalytic PDA coating could in-situ degrade the captured pollutant, thus achieving consecutive adsorption-degradation-regeneration utilization. Furthermore, through simple dip-coating and cleaner UV-irradiation techniques, the preparation process could be scaled up. This work contributes to both the upcycling of discarded biofiber waste and the development of advanced biomass adsorbent.

Fabrication of MNPs/rGO/PMMA Composite for the Removal of Hazardous Cr(VI) from Tannery Wastewater through Batch and Continuous Mode Adsorption

Herein, we report the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP)-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) composite (MNPs/rGO/PMMA) as adsorbent via an in situ fabrication strategy and, in turn, the application for adsorptive removal and recovery of Cr(VI) from tannery wastewater. The composite material was characterized via XRD, FTIR and SEM analyses. Under batch mode experiments, the composite achieved maximum adsorption of the Cr(VI) ion (99.53 ± 1.4%, i.e., 1636.49 mg of Cr(VI)/150 mg of adsorbent) at pH 2, adsorbent dose of 150 mg/10 mL of solution and 30 min of contact time. The adsorption process was endothermic, feasible and spontaneous and followed a pseudo-2nd order kinetic model. The Cr ions were completely desorbed (99.32 ± 2%) from the composite using 30 mL of NaOH solution (2M); hence, the composite exhibited high efficiency for five consecutive cycles without prominent loss in activity. The adsorbent was washed with distilled water and diluted HCl (0.1M), then dried under vacuum at 60 °C for reuse. The XRD analysis confirmed the synthesis and incorporation of magnetic iron oxide at 2θ of 30.38°, 35.5°, 43.22° and 57.36°, respectively, and graphene oxide (GO) at 25.5°. The FTIR analysids revealed that the composite retained the configurations of the individual components, whereas the SEM analysis indicated that the magnetic Fe3O4-NPs (MNPs) dispersed on the surface of the PMMA/rGO sheets. To anticipate the behavior of breakthrough, the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models were applied to fixed-bed column data, which indicated good agreement with the experimental data. This study evaluates useful reference information for designing a cost-effective and easy-to-use adsorbent for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Therefore, it can be envisioned as an alternative approach for a variety of unexplored industrial-level operations.

Role of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch-Derived Cellulose in Improving the Sonocatalytic Activity of Silver-Doped Titanium Dioxide

In this study, a novel cellulose/Ag/TiO₂ nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The cellulose extracted from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) could address the disposal issue created by OPEFB biomass. Characterization studies such as FESEM, EDX, HRTEM, XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, PL, XPS, and surface analysis were conducted. It was observed that the incorporation of cellulose could hinder the agglomeration, reduce the band gap energy to 3 eV, increase the specific surface area to 150.22 m³/g, and lower the recombination rate of the generated electron-hole pairs compared to Ag/TiO₂ nanoparticles. The excellent properties enhance the sonocatalytic degradation efficiency of 10 mg/L Congo red (up to 81.3% after 10 min ultrasonic irradiation) in the presence of 0.5 g/L cellulose/Ag/TiO₂ at 24 kHz and 280 W. The improvement of catalytic activity was due to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag and numerous hydroxyl groups on cellulose that capture the holes, which delay the recombination rate of the charge carriers in TiO₂. This study demonstrated an alternative approach in the development of an efficient sonocatalyst for the sonocatalytic degradation of Congo red.
