Biomineralized manganese oxide mediated nitrogen-contained wastewater treatment

In recent years, manganese (Mn) has emerged as an accelerator for nitrogen metabolism. However, the bioactivity of manganese is limited by the restricted contact between microbes and manganese minerals in the solid phase and by the toxicity of manganese to microbes. To enhance the bioactivity of solid-phase manganese, biomineralized manganese oxide (MnOx) modified by Lactobacillus was introduced. Nitrogen removal performance have confirmed the effective role of biomineralized MnOx in accelerating the removal of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). Metagenomic analysis has confirmed the enhancement of the nitrogen metabolic pathway and microbial extracellular electron transfer (MEET) in biomineralized MnOx treatment group (BIOA group). Additionally, the enrichment of manganese oxidation and denitrification genus indicates a coupling between nitrogen metabolism and manganese metabolism. One point of views is that biomineralized MnOx-mediated nitrogen transformation processes could serve as a substitute for traditional nitrogen removal processes.

Anaerobic co-digestion of corn straw, sewage sludge and fresh leachate: Focusing on synergistic/antagonistic effects and microbial mechanisms

Effects of sewage sludge (SS) and fresh leachate (FL) addition on corn straw (CS) digestion and underlying mechanisms were investigated. Co-digestion of CS, SS and FL significantly increased cumulative methane production by 7.2-61.1%. Further analysis revealed that co-digestion acted mainly on slowly degradable substrates and exerted dual effects on methane production potential, which was closely related to the volatile solids (VS) content. Antagonistic effects of co-digestion resulted from the dominance of norank_c_Bathyarchaeia, a mixotrophic methanogen that may generate methane inefficiently and consume existing methane. The synergistic enhancement of methane production (0.7-12.7%) was achieved in co-digestion with 33.5-45.5% of total VS added as SS and FL. Co-digestion with more balanced nutrients and higher buffering capacity enriched Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, and Synergistota, thereby facilitating the substrate degradation. Furthermore, the predominant acetoclastic methanogens, increased hydrogenotrophic methanogens, and decreased methylotrophic methanogens in the digester combined to prompt the synergy.

Pyrrhotite-dependent microbial reduction and magnetic separation for efficient vanadium detoxification and recovery in contaminated aquifer

Microbial reduction under anaerobic condition is a promising method for remediating vanadate [V(V)] contamination in aquifers, while V(V) may be re-generated with redox fluctuations. The inability to remove vanadium after remediation has become a key issue limiting bioremediation. In this study, we proposed the use of pyrrhotite, a natural mineral with magnetic properties, to immobilize V(V) to insoluble V(IV) under microbial action and remove vanadium from the aquifer using a magnetic field, which could avoid the problem of V(V) recontamination under redox fluctuating conditions. Up to 49.0 ± 4.7 % of vanadium could be removed from the aquifer by the applied magnetic field, and the vanadium in the aquifer after the reaction was mainly in the acid-extractable and reducible states. pH had a strong effect on the magnetic recovery of V(V), while the influence of initial V(V) concentration was weak. Microbial community structure analysis showed that Thiobacillus, Proteiniphilum, Fermentimonas, and Desulfurivibrio played key roles for V(V) reduction and pyrrhotite oxidation. Structural equation model indicated the positive correlation between these genera with the magnetic recovery of vanadium. Real time-qPCR confirmed the roles of functional genes of V(V) reduction (napA and nirK) and SO42- reduction (dsrA) in such biological processes. This study provides a novel route to sustainable V(V) remediation in aquifers, with synchronous recovery of vanadium resources without rebound.

Enhancement of medium-chain fatty acids production from sludge anaerobic fermentation liquid under moderate sulfate reduction

In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the production of excess sludge. Chain-elongation (CE) fermentation presents a promising approach for carbon resource recovery from sludge, enabling the transformation of carbon into medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). However, the impact of sulfate, commonly presents in sludge, on the CE process remains largely unexplored. In this study, batch tests for CE process of sludge anaerobic fermentation liquid (SAFL) under different SCOD/SO42- ratios were performed. The moderate sulfate reduction under the optimum SCOD/SO42- of 20:1 enhanced the n-caproate production, giving the maximum n-caproate concentration, selectivity and production rate of 5.49 g COD/L, 21.4% and 4.87 g COD/L/d, respectively. The excessive sulfate reduction under SCOD/SO42- ≤ 5 completely inhibited the CE process, resulting in almost no n-caproate generation. The variations in n-caproate production under different conditions of SCOD/SO42- were all well fitted with the modified Gompertz kinetic model. Alcaligenes and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 were the dominant genus-level biomarkers under moderate sulfate reduction (SCOD/SO42- = 20), which enhanced the n-caproate production by increasing the generation of acetyl-CoA and the hydrolysis of difficult biodegradable substances in SAFL. The findings presented in this work elucidate a strategy and provide a theoretical framework for the further enhancement of MCFAs production from excess sludge.

Fermentation of micro- and macroalgae as a way to produce value-added products

Fermentation of both microalgae and macroalgae is one of the most efficient methods of obtaining valuable value-added products due to the minimal environmental pollution and the availability of economic benefits, as algae do not require arable land and drift algae and algal bloom biomass are considered waste and must be recycled and their fermentation waste utilized. The compounds found in algae can be effectively used in the fuel, food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries, depending on the type of fermentation used. Products such as methane and hydrogen can be produced by anaerobic digestion and dark fermentation of algae, and lactic acid and its polymers can be produced by lactic acid fermentation of algae. Article aims to provide an overview of the different types potential of micro- and macroalgae fermentation, the advantages and disadvantages of each type considered, and the economic feasibility of algal fermentation for the production of various value-added products.

Enhancing volatile fatty acid production from sewage sludge in batch fermentation tests

Volatile fatty acids (VFA) from sewage sludge represent an excellent recovered resource from wastewater treatment. This study investigated four sludge pre-treatments (namely, potassium permanganate - KMnO4, initial pH = 10, initial pH = 2.5 and low-temperature thermal hydrolysis) by operating batch reactors under acidogenic fermentation conditions. Results revealed that 0.1 g KMnO4/g of total suspended solids represents the best pre-treatment obtaining up to 2713 mgCOD L-1 and 452 mgCOD/g of volatile suspended solids. These results also paralleled metataxonomic analysis highlighting changes in prokaryotic microbial structures of sewage sludge of the batch fermentations subjected to the different pre-treatments.

Robust and high-efficient nitrogen removal from real sewage and waste activated sludge (WAS) reduction in zero-external carbon PN/A combined with in-situ fermentation-denitrification process under decreased temperatures

Despite the advantages of the combined anammox and fermentation-driven denitrification process in nitrogen removal and energy consumption, stable performance at decreased temperatures remains a challenge. In this study, a robust and high-efficient nitrogen removal efficiency (95.0-93.1 ∼ 86.8-93.4%) with desirable effluent quality (3.0-4.1 ∼ 7.9-4.9 mg/L) under long-term decreased temperatures (30 °C→25 °C→20 °C) was achieved in a zero-external carbon Partial Nitritation/Anammox combined with in-situ sludge Fermentation-Denitrification process treating sewage. Excellent sludge reduction averaged at 14.9% assuming no microbial growth. Increased hzsB mRNA (2.2-fold) and reduced Ea (80.9 kJ/mol) proved resilient anammox to lower temperature. RT-qPCR tests revealed increased NarG/NirK (5.1) and NarG/NirS (4.9) mRNA at 20 °C, suggesting higher NO3-→NO2- over NO2-→N2 pathway. Metagenomics unraveled dominant anammox bacteria (Candidatus_Brocadia, 2.27%), increased denitritation bacteria containing more NarG (Hyphomicrobium, 0.8%), fatty acid biosynthesis and CAZymes genes. Enhanced denitritation with recovered organics from sludge reserved nitrite for anammox and facilitated higher anammox contribution to N removal at 20 °C (42.4%) than 30 °C (39.5%). This study proposed an innovative low-temperature strategy for in-situ sludge fermentation, and demonstrated stability of advanced municipal wastewater treatment and sludge disposal through energy savings and carbon recovery under decreased temperatures.

Insight into the effect of rice-straw ash on enhancing the anaerobic digestion performance of high salinity organic wastewater

Anaerobic digestion is an economic method for treating high salinity organic wastewater (HSOW), but performance enhancement is needed because of the inhibitory effect of high salinity. In this study, rice-straw ash (RSA) was applied to alleviate the inhibitory effect during HSOW anaerobic digestion. The results showed that, when the NaCl content increased from 0% to 3.0%, the methane production decreased by 87.35%, and the TOC removal rate decreased to 34.12%. As a K+ and alkalinity source, RSA addition enhanced the anaerobic digestion performance, and the optimal dosage was 0.88 g/L. Under this dosage, the methane production increased by 221.60%, and TOC removal rate reached 66.42% at 3.0% salinity. The addition of RSA increased the proportion of living cells in the high salinity environment, and enhanced the activity of key enzymes and electron transfer efficiency in the anaerobic digestion process. The addition of RSA with a dosage of 0.88 g/L promoted the accumulation of acetoclastic methanogen Methanothrix. The abundance of substrate transporters, ion transporters and electron transfer related functional genes were enriched, which might be key for promoting HSOW anaerobic digestion performance. The results also showed that RSA addition played an important role in maintaining the stability of the anaerobic digestion system, and it could be a potential strategy for enhancing the anaerobic digestion performance under high salinity conditions.

Enhancing the production of volatile fatty acids by potassium permanganate from wasted sewage sludge: A batch test experiment

Recovering resources from wastewater treatment is vital for the transition from a linear to a circular economy model in the water sector. Volatile Fatty Acids (VFAs) are valuable products among the possible recovered resources. This study investigates the influence of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) addition during acidogenic fermentation of waste activated sludge for enhancing VFAs production. Specifically, different fermentation batch tests with and without KMnO4 addition were carried out using two distinctive sewage sludges as feedstocks. Results showed that KMnO4 addition increased the VFAs yield up to 144 and 196 mgCOD/g VSS for the two sludges. When KMnO4 was used as pre-treatment, 55 % of sCOD were VFAs. This latter result was mainly debited to the recalcitrant organics' disruption promoted by the oxidative permanganate ability.

Simultaneous Removal of Sulfamethoxazole during Fermentative Production of Short-Chain Fatty Acids

This study explores the simultaneous sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production by a Clostridium sensu stricto-dominated microbial consortium. SMX is a commonly prescribed and persistent antimicrobial agent frequently detected in aquatic environments, while the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant genes limits the biological removal of SMX. Under strictly anaerobic conditions, sequencing batch cultivation coupled with co-metabolism resulted in the production of butyric acid, valeric acid, succinic acid, and caproic acid. Continuous cultivation in a CSTR achieved a maximum butyric acid production rate and yield of 0.167 g/L/h and 9.56 mg/g COD, respectively, while achieving a maximum SMX degradation rate and removal capacity of 116.06 mg/L/h and 55.8 g SMX/g biomass. Furthermore, continuous anaerobic fermentation reduced sul genes prevalence, thus limiting the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes during antibiotic degradation. These findings suggest a promising approach for efficient antibiotic elimination while simultaneously producing valuable products (e.g., SCFAs).

Application and improvement methods of sludge alkaline fermentation liquid as a carbon source for biological nutrient removal: A review

Alkaline fermentation can reduce the amount of waste activated sludge and prepare sludge alkaline fermentation liquid (SAFL) rich in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which can be used as a high-quality carbon source for the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process. This review compiles the production method of SAFL and the progress of its application as a BNR carbon source. Compared with traditional carbon sources, SAFL has the advantages of higher efficiency and economy, and different operating conditions can influence the yield and structure of SCFAs in SAFL. SAFL can significantly improve the nutrient removal efficiency of the BNR process. Taking SAFL as the internal carbon source of BNR can simultaneously solve the problem of carbon source shortage and sludge treatment difficulties in wastewater treatment plants, and further reduce the operating cost. However, the alkaline fermentation process results in many refractory organics, ammonia and phosphate in SAFL, which reduces the availability of SAFL as a carbon source. Purifying SCFAs by removing nitrogen and phosphorus, directly extracting SCFAs, or increasing the amount of SCFAs in SAFL by co-fermentation or combining with other pretreatment methods, etc., are effective measures to improve the availability of SAFL.

Medium-chain fatty acid production from thermal hydrolysed sludge without external electron donor supplementation

In this study, medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) generation from mixed sludge (including primary sludge and waste activated sludge) was investigated without additional electron donors (EDs). 0.5 g COD/L of MCFAs was produced and the in situ generated ethanol could serve as the EDs during the anaerobic fermentation of mixed sludge without thermal hydrolysis process (THP) pretreatment. THP increased the MCFA production by approximately 128% in the anaerobic fermentation. During 102 days of operation, the fermentation of THP pre-treated mixed sludge stably generated 2.9 g COD/L MCFAs. The self-generated EDs could not maximize MCFA production, and external addition of ethanol improved MCFA yield. Caproiciproducens was the dominant chain-elongating bacteria. PICRUST2 revealed that both fatty acid biosynthesis and reverse β-oxidation pathways could participate in MCFA synthesis, and ethanol addition could enhance the contribution of the reverse β-oxidation pathway. Future studies should focus on the improvement of MCFA production from THP-assisted sludge fermentation.

Electroplating sludge-derived metal and sulfur co-doping catalyst and its application in methanol production by CO2 catalytic hydrogenation

Electroplating sludge is a hazardous waste and its recycling is a hot topic. Electroplating sludge usually contains plenty of transition metals and multi-hetero atoms, which are potential resources. For the first time, this work synthesized spinel catalyst from Zn- and Cr-containing electroplating sludges by a simple calcination method, and applied the obtained catalysts in CH₃OH production by CO₂ catalytic hydrogenation. The spinel was doped by various heteroatoms, including Fe, Mn, Cu, and even S. According to detailed characterizations, the metal doping increased the low-temperature conversion efficiency of CO₂ but decreased the CH₃OH selectivity at the same time. After a further doping of S, although CO₂ conversion efficiency was slightly decreased, the selectivity of CH₃OH was significantly increased. After all, the optimized catalyst attained a conversion efficiency of 8.6% (CO₂) as well as a selectivity of 73.3% (CH₃OH) at 250 °C and 3 MPa. As a result, above results realized high-value-added utilization of hazardous waste and producing valuable product at the same time, which was in favor of circular development.

Persulfate-based strategy for promoted acesulfame removal during sludge anaerobic fermentation: Combined chemical and biological effects

The acesulfame (ACE) degradation in waste activated sludge (WAS) via direct anaerobic fermentation is difficult and the efficient elimination techniques are imperative for the ultimate safe WAS disposal. Persulfate (PS)-based approach was developed to promote the ACE removal during WAS anaerobic fermentation. Results demonstrated the effectiveness of PS-based treatments on ACE degradation, and the ACE removal efficiency was respectively 48.2% and 96.2% in the PS and PS/Fe-treated reactors while it was only 6.0% in the control reactor. Mechanism explorations revealed that the active free radicals (i.e. OH• and SO₄^•-) generated in the PS-based reactors were the key oxidative species for the ACE degradation. However, such effects were interfered by the released soluble substrates (i.e. protein, carbohydrate and inorganic ions) during anaerobic fermentation by competing and/or quenching free radicals, which caused the deceleration of the ACE removal efficiency. Moreover, the PS-based treatment facilitated the enrichment of functional microorganisms (i.e. Phyllobacteriaceae and Bradyrhizobiaceae) and upregulated the critical genes (i.e. pncB and nadE) involved in the ACE degradation. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) and metabolic intermediates analysis, the hydroxylation and oxidative ring-opening were the two main proposed metabolic pathways for ACE degradation. Overall, the combined chemical and biological metabolism effects collectively contributed to the efficient ACE degradation, and it provided a novel and effective strategy for refractory pollutants removal during WAS anaerobic fermentation.

Stepwise freezing-thawing treatment promotes short-chain fatty acids production from waste activated sludge

Waste activated sludge (WAS), as the byproducts of wastewater treatment plants, has been greatly produced. With high cost and environmental risk of WAS disposal, to explore a low-cost and environment-friendly technology has been a great challenge. Considering that WAS is a collection of organic matters, anaerobic fermentation has been selected as a sustainable way to simultaneously recover resources and reduce environmental pollution. To recover short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) has gained great concern because of the high value-added application and high-efficiency production process. Considering the temperature in some areas of the world can reach to below 0 °C, this study proposed an efficient strategy, i.e., stepwise freezing and thawing treatment, to promote SCFAs production. The maximal production of SCFAs, i.e., 246 mg COD/g volatile suspended solid, was obtained with the shortened retention time of five days. Mechanistic studies showed that the solubilization of both extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and microbial cells could be accelerated, with the EPSs removal of 58.3% for proteins and 59.0% for polysaccharides. Also, the hydrolysis process was promoted to provide more substrates for subsequent acidogenisis, and the functional microorganisms, such as Romboutsia, Paraclostridium, Macellibacteroides and Conexibacter, were greatly enriched, with a total abundance of 26.2%. Moreover, compared to control, methanogenesis was inhibited at a shortened sludge retention time (e.g., five days), which benefited to the accumulation of SCFAs, but the methane production was increased by 25.2% at a longer sludge retention time (e.g., ten days). Thus, these findings of this work may provide some new solutions for the enhanced resource recovery from WAS, and further for carbon-neutral operation of wastewater treatment plants.

Corncob ash boosts fermentative hydrogen production from waste activated sludge

With the increasing demand for sustainable development, the recycling and utilization of wastes has received widespread attention. This study proposed a green method of using one waste, corncob ash, to boost microbial the production of hydrogen from another waste, waste activated sludge, during anaerobic fermentation. The corncob ash dosage and the fermentative hydrogen production was positively correlated, and the maximum production of hydrogen reached up to 46.8 ± 1.0 mL/g VS, which was about 3.5 times that of the control group without corncob ash dosage (17.0 ± 0.9 mL/g VS). Mechanistic studies found that corncob ash was beneficial to the solubilization, hydrolysis and acetogenesis processes involved in fermentative hydrogen production process. The microbial community analysis indicated that corncob ash enriched more hydrolytic microorganisms (e.g., Bacteroides sp. and Leptolinea sp.), and has less impact on acidifying microorganisms, compared to the control group. The strategy of using corncob ash to boost the production of hydrogen during anaerobic waste activated sludge fermentation proposed in this study might provide a new waste-control-waste paradigm, making sludge disposal and wastewater treatment more sustainable.

Revealing the intrinsic drawbacks of waste activated sludge for efficient anaerobic digestion and the potential mitigation strategies

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective approach for waste activated sludge (WAS) disposal with substantial recovery of valuable substrates. Previous studies have extensively explored the correlations of common operational parameters with AD efficiency, but the impacts of intrinsic characteristics of WAS on the AD processes are generally underestimated. This study focused on disclosing the association of intrinsic drawbacks in WAS with AD performance, and found that the cemented WAS structure, low fraction of biomass and various high levels of inhibitory pollutants (e.g., organic pollutants and heavy metals), as the integral parts of WAS all greatly restricted the AD performance. The main potential strategies and underlying mechanisms to mitigate the restrictions for efficient WAS digestion, including the practical pretreatment methods, bioaugmentation and aided substances addition, were critically analyzed. Also, future directions for the improvement of WAS digestion were proposed from the perspectives of technical, management and economic aspects.
