All-iron ions mediated electron transfer for biomass pretreatment coupling with direct generation of electricity from lignocellulose

Selective separation of hemicellulose from poplar by hydrothermal pretreatment with ferric chloride and pH buffer

As an environmentally friendly lignocellulosic biomass separation technology, hydrothermal pretreatment (HP) has a strong application prospect. However, the low separation efficiency is a main factor limiting its application. In this study, the poplar components were separated using HP with ferric chloride and pH buffer (HFB). The optimal conditions were ferric chloride concentration of 0.10 M, reaction temperature of 150 °C, reaction time of 15 min and pH 1.9. The separation of hemicellulose was increased 34.03 % to 77.02 %. The pH buffering resulted in the highest cellulose and lignin retention yields compared to ferric chloride pretreatment (FC). The high efficiency separation of hemicellulose via HFB pretreatment inhibited the degradation of xylose. The hydrolysate was effectively reused for five times. The fiber crystallinity index reached 60.05 %, and the highest C/O ratio was obtained. The results provide theoretical support for improving the efficiency of HP and promoting its application.

Enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis of waste sunflower straw by clean hydrothermal pretreatment

Hydrothermal pretreatment is an effective way to change the lignocellulose structure and improve its saccharification. An efficient hydrothermal pretreatment of sunflower straw was conducted when the severity factor (LogR0) was 4.1. 60.4% of xylan and 36.5% of lignin were removed at 180 ℃ for 120 minutes with a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:15. A series of characterizations (such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, chemical component analysis, cellulase accessibility) proved that hydrothermal pretreatment destroyed sunflower straw surface structure, enlarged its pores, and enhanced the accessibility to cellulase (371.2 mg/g). After the enzymatic saccharification of treated sunflower straw for 72 h, 68.0% yield of reducing sugar and 61.8% yield of glucose were achieved, and 4.0 g/L xylo-oligosaccharide was obtained in the filtrate. Overall, this easy-to-operate and green hydrothermal pretreatment could effectively destroy the surface barrier of lignocellulose, help remove lignin and xylan, and increase the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency.

Bioresource Upgrade for Sustainable Energy, Environment, and Biomedicine

We conceptualize bioresource upgrade for sustainable energy, environment, and biomedicine with a focus on circular economy, sustainability, and carbon neutrality using high availability and low utilization biomass (HALUB). We acme energy-efficient technologies for sustainable energy and material recovery and applications. The technologies of thermochemical conversion (TC), biochemical conversion (BC), electrochemical conversion (EC), and photochemical conversion (PTC) are summarized for HALUB. Microalgal biomass could contribute to a biofuel HHV of 35.72 MJ Kg-1 and total benefit of 749 $/ton biomass via TC. Specific surface area of biochar reached 3000 m2 g-1 via pyrolytic carbonization of waste bean dregs. Lignocellulosic biomass can be effectively converted into bio-stimulants and biofertilizers via BC with a high conversion efficiency of more than 90%. Besides, lignocellulosic biomass can contribute to a current density of 672 mA m-2 via EC. Bioresource can be 100% selectively synthesized via electrocatalysis through EC and PTC. Machine learning, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle analysis are essential to various upgrading approaches of HALUB. Sustainable biomaterials, sustainable living materials and technologies for biomedical and multifunctional applications like nano-catalysis, microfluidic and micro/nanomotors beyond are also highlighted. New techniques and systems for the complete conversion and utilization of HALUB for new energy and materials are further discussed.

Photoenzymatic decarboxylation: A promising way to produce sustainable aviation fuels and fine chemicals

As one of the fastest-growing carbon emission sources, the aviation sector is severely restricted by carbon emission reduction targets. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has emerged as the most potential alternative to traditional aviation fuel, but harsh production technologies limit its commercialization. Fatty acids photodecarboxylase from Chlorella variabilis NC64A (CvFAP), the latest discovered photoenzyme, provides promising approaches to produce various carbon-neutral biofuels and fine chemicals. This review highlights the state-of-the-art strategies to enhance the application of CvFAP in carbon-neutral biofuel and fine chemicals production, including supplementing alkane as decoy molecular, screening efficient CvFAP variants with directed evolution, constructing genetic strains, employing biphasic catalytic system, and immobilizing CvFAP in an efficient photobioreactor. Furthermore, future opportunities are suggested to enhance photoenzymatic decarboxylation and explore the catalytic mechanism of CvFAP. This review provides a broad context to improve CvFAP catalysis and advance its potential applications.

Oxidative pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for enzymatic hydrolysis: Progress and challenges

Deconstruction of cell wall structure is important for biorefining of lignocellulose to produce various biofuels and chemicals. Oxidative delignification is an effective way to increase the enzymatic digestibility of cellulose. In this work, the current research progress on conventional oxidative pretreatment including wet oxidation, alkaline hydrogen peroxide, organic peracids, Fenton oxidation, and ozone oxidation were reviewed. Some recently developed novel technologies for coupling pretreatment and direct biomass-to-electricity conversion with recyclable oxidants were also introduced. The primary mechanism of oxidative pretreatment to enhance cellulose digestibility is delignification, especially in alkaline medium, thus eliminating the physical blocking and non-productive adsorption of enzymes by lignin. However, the cost of oxidative delignification as a pretreatment is still too expensive to be applied at large scale at present. Efforts should be made particularly to reduce the cost of oxidants, or explore valuable products to obtain more revenue.
