Abstract
Okara, as a by-product of soybean processing, is rich in insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), which is a carbohydrate polymer with various insoluble polysaccharides. Nowadays, the extraction of IDF with excellent functional properties has become a research hotspot. In this work, we further proposed an alternating alkali/ultrasound method for the efficient extraction of IDF. The sequential treatments of alkali (A-ISF), alkali-ultrasonic (AU-ISF), ultrasonic-alkali (UA-ISF), ultrasonic-alkali-ultrasonic (UAU-ISF) and alkali-ultrasonic-alkali (AUA-ISF) were applied to extract insoluble soybean fiber (ISF). FTIR and XRD results proved the typical structure of ISFs, and TGA results demonstrated the improved thermal stability of UAU-ISF and AUA-ISF. Chemical composition measurement showed that UAU-ISF and AUA-ISF exhibited higher cellulose content (>83 %). SEM results revealed that ultrasonic treatment led to a decomposition of okara matrix and significant porous structure in ISFs with an amplified collapse effect, resulting in an increase of the pore size of ISFs, and strengthening the properties of UAU-ISF and AUA-ISF in higher water (>15 g/g)/oil (>12 g/g) holding capacities, cholesterol binding capacity (>36 mg/g), and cation exchange capacity (>0.3 mmol/g), thus providing new insights for the preparation of ISF with high functional properties that are beneficial for human intestinal health.

Abstract
The complete deployment of a bio-based economy is essential to meet the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals from the 2030 Agenda. In this context, food waste and lignocellulosic residues are considered low-cost feedstocks for obtaining industrially attractive products through biological processes. The effective conversion of these raw materials is, however, still challenging, since they are recalcitrant to bioprocessing and must be first treated to alter their physicochemical properties and ease the accessibility to their structural components. Among the full pallet of pretreatments, physical methods are recognised to have a high potential to transform food waste and lignocellulosic residues. This review provides a critical discussion about the recent advances on milling, extrusion, ultrasound, and microwave pretreatments. Their mechanisms and modes of application are analysed and the main drawbacks and limitations for their use at an industrial scale are discussed.

Abstract
Dilute sulfuric acid and acidic ionic liquids are pretreatment methods used to selectively hydrolyze hemicellulose from lignocellulosic biomasses. In this work, a comparison between these techniques is carried out by treating sugarcane bagasse both with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate at different ionic-liquid and water contents and with H 2 SO 4 at the same conditions and equivalent ionic liquid molar contents. Results from the use of ionic liquid showed that it was possible to tune the biomass treatment either to achieve high hemicellulose hydrolysis yields of 72.5 mol% to very low furan and glucose co-production, or to obtain furfural at moderate yields of 18.7 mol% under conditions of low water concentration. In comparison to the use of ionic liquid, sulfuric acid pretreatment increased hemicellulose hydrolysis yields by 17%, but the 8.6 mol% furfural yield was also higher, and these yields were obtained at high water concentration conditions. Besides, no such tuning ability of the biomass treatment conditions can be made.

Abstract
Present study aims at sustainable utilization of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) for production of valuable prebiotic xylooligosaccharides (XOS) along with second generation ethanol. Fractionation of SCB into hemicellulose rich liquid fraction and cellulose rich solid residue was achieved using alkaline treatment. Carbohydrate rich precipitate obtained from liquid fraction was utilized for XOS production using inhouse produced endoxylanase. XOS production from SCB xylan was optimized by employing response surface methodology. Under optimized conditions, maximum XOS yield was 227.72 mg/g of carbohydrate rich precipitates. The solid residue obtained after alkaline pretreatment was used for ethanol fermentation by prehydrolysis and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (P-SSF) process using cellulolytic enzyme cocktail and Saccharomyces cerevisiae SM1. Maximum ethanol concentration, productivity and yield were 79.76 ± 0.16 g/L, 0.83 g/L/h and 69.38%, respectively by employing P-SSF process. Based on the experimental data it can be predicted that bioconversion of 100 g raw SCB can yield 6.26 g of XOS (DP 2-DP 5), 15.95 g ethanol and 1.44 g of xylitol. Present investigation reports an integrated process for effective bioconversion of SCB into value added products by maximum utilization of cellulosic and hemicellulosic fractions simultaneously using indigenously produced fungal enzymes.

Abstract
In this work, the investigation mainly focused on ultrasonic-assisted dual-alkali pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse followed by Candida tropicalis fermentation to produce xylitol. The results showed that the combination of NaOH and ammonia water had the best effect by comparing the effects of the four single-alkali (NaOH, KOH, ammonia water, Ca(OH)2) and their mixed double-alkali pretreatments on xylose content. Then, the optimal conditions for ultrasonic-assisted pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse were obtained by response surface methodology. When the ratio of NaOH and ammonia water was 2:1, the mixed alkali concentration (v/v) was 17%, the ultrasonic temperature was 45°C, the ultrasonic power was 300 W, and the ultrasonic time was 40 min, the content of xylose reached a maximum of 2.431 g/L. Scanning electron microscopy showed that sugarcane bagasse by ultrasonic-assisted alkali pretreatment aggravated with more folds and furrows. Moreover, the fermentation results showed that the concentration ratio of enzymatic hydrolysate of sugarcane bagasse affected the xylitol yield, and when concentrated three times, the highest yield of xylitol (54.42%) was obtained.
