Treatment of cadmium and zinc-contaminated water systems using modified biochar: Contaminant uptake, adsorption ability, and mechanism

Biochar with KMnO4-hematite modification promoted foxtail millet growth by alleviating soil Cd and Zn biotoxicity

The excessive accumulation of Cd and Zn in soil poisons crops and threatens food safety. In this study, KMnO4-hematite modified biochar (MnFeB) was developed and applied to remediate weakly alkaline Cd-Zn contaminated soil, and the heavy metal immobilization effect, plant growth, and metal ion uptake of foxtail millet were studied. MnFeB application reduced the phytotoxicity of soil heavy metals; bioavailable acid-soluble Cd and Zn were reduced by 57.79% and 35.64%, respectively, whereas stable, non-bioavailable, residual Cd and Zn increased by 96.44% and 32.08%, respectively. The chlorophyll and total protein contents and the superoxide dismutase (SOD)activity were enhanced, whereas proline, malondialdehyde, the H2O2 content, glutathione reductase (GR), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT) activities were reduced. Accordingly, the expressions of GR, APX, and CAT were downregulated, whereas the expression of MnSOD was upregulated. In addition, MnFeB promoted the net photosynthetic rate and growth of foxtail millet plants. Furthermore, MnFeB reduced the levels of Cd and Zn in the stems, leaves, and grains, decreased the bioconcentration factor of Cd and Zn in shoots, and weakened the translocation of Cd and Zn from roots to shoots. Precipitation, complexation, oxidation-reduction, ion exchange, and π-π stacking interaction were the main Cd and Zn immobilization mechanisms, and MnFeB reduced the soil bacterial community diversity and the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Planctomycetota. This study provides a feasible and effective remediation material for Cd- and Zn-contaminated soils.

Nano-Biochar Prepared from High-Pressure Homogenization Improves Thermal Conductivity of Ethylene Glycol-Based Coolant

As an environmentally friendly material, biochar is increasingly being utilized in the field of heat transfer and thermal conduction. In this study, nano-biochar was prepared from high-pressure homogenization (HPH) using sesame stalks as the raw material. It was incorporated into ethylene glycol (EG) and its dispersion stability, viscosity, and thermal conductivity were investigated. The nano-biochar was stably dispersed in EG for 28 days. When the concentration of the nano-biochar added to EG was less than 1%, the impact on viscosity was negligible. The addition of 5 wt.% nano-biochar to EG improved the thermal conductivity by 6.72%, which could be attributed to the graphitized structure and Brownian motion of the nano-biochar. Overall, nano-biochar has the potential to be applied in automotive thermal management.

A novel and recyclable silica gel-modified biochar to remove cadmium from wastewater: Model application and mechanism exploration

Water pollution caused by heavy metals is a major environmental problem, threatening water production, food safety, and human health. Cadmium (Cd) pollution is particularly serious because of food-chain biomagnification at toxic concentrations. Modified biochar is promising for heavy metal removal; however, efficient adsorbents for Cd removal are lacking. In the present study, a novel adsorbent, silica gel-modified biochar (SGB), was prepared and applied to treat sewage polluted by Cd. Through the batch adsorption experiments, it is known that SGB possessed outstanding Cd removal ability and recycleability. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior and mechanisms were analyzed by the application of kinetic and isotherm models. The maximum Cd2+ adsorption capacity of SGB was 38.08 mg g-1, and after five recycling processes, the Cd2+ removal rate was still 86.89 %. When the pH of the solution was 7.0, SGB showed the strongest Cd2+ adsorption capacity (29.06 mg g-1). When competitive ions existed, biochar also had high Cd removal efficiency, although the effect of Pb2+ was greater than those of Cu2+ and Zn2+, indicating that SGB was applicable to complex polluted water. Additionally, the main Cd2+ adsorption mechanisms by SGB were electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, complexation, and co-precipitation. These results showed that SGB can effectively treat Cd-contaminated wastewater as a new adsorbent.

Functionality of wheat straw-derived biochar enhanced its efficiency for actively capping Cd and Pb in contaminated water and soil matrices: Insights through batch adsorption and flow-through experiments

The impact of functionality of biochar on pressing environmental issue of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) co-contamination in simultaneous soil and water systems has not sufficiently reported. This study investigated the impact of Fe- and Mg-functionalized wheat straw biochar (Fe-WSBC and Mg-WSBC) on Cd and Pb adsorption/immobilization through batch sorption and column leaching trials. Importantly, Fe-WSBC was more effective in adsorbing Cd and Pb (82.84 and 111.24 mg g-1), regeneration ability (removal efficiency 94.32 and 92.365), and competitive ability under competing cations (83.15 and 84.36%) compared to other materials (WSBC and Mg-WSBC). The practical feasibility of Fe-WSBC for spiked river water verified the 92.57% removal of Cd and 85.73% for Pb in 50 mg L-1 and 100 mg L-1 contamination, respectively. Besides, the leaching of Cd and Pb with Fe-WSBC under flow-through conditions was lowered to (0.326 and 17.62 mg L-1), respectively as compared to control (CK) (0.836 and 40.40 mg L-1). In short, this study presents the applicable approach for simultaneous remediation of contaminated water and soil matrices, offering insights into environmentally friendly green remediation strategies for heavy metals co-contaminated matrices.

Pinecone biochar for the Adsorption of chromium (VI) from wastewater: Kinetics, thermodynamics, and adsorbent regeneration

High concentration of chromium in aquatic environments is the trigger for researchers to remediate it from wastewater environments. However, conventional water treatment methods have not been satisfactory in removing chromium from water and wastewater over the last decade. Similarly, many adsorption studies have been focused on one aspect of the treatment, but this study dealt with all aspects of adsorption packages to come up with a concrete conclusion. Therefore, this study aimed to prepare pinecone biochar (PBC) via pyrolysis and apply it for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. The PBC was characterized using FTIR, SEM-EDX, BET surface area, pHpzc, Raman analyses, TGA, and XRD techniques. Chromium adsorption was studied under the influence of PBC dose, solution pH, initial Cr(VI) concentration, and contact time. The characteristics of PBC are illustrated by FTIR spectroscopic functional groups, XRD non-crystallite structure, SEM rough surface morphology, and high BET surface area125 m2/g, pore volume, 0.07 cm3/g, and pore size 1.4 nm. On the other hand, the maximum Cr (VI) adsorption of 69% was found at the experimental condition of pH 2, adsorbent dosage 0.25 mg/50 mL, initial Cr concentration 100 mg/L, and contact time of 120 min. Similarly, the experimental data were well-fitted with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm at R2 0.96 and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model at R2 0.99. This implies the adsorption process is mainly attributed to monolayer orientation between the adsorbent and adsorbate. In the thermodynamics study of adsorption, ΔG was found to be negative implying the adsorption process was feasible and spontaneous whereas the positive values of ΔH and ΔS indicated the adsorption process was endothermic and increasing the degree of randomness, respectively. Finally, adsorbent regeneration and reusability were successful up to three cycles. In conclusion, biochar surface modification and reusability improvements are urgently required before being applied at the pilot scale.

Effects of calcium-to-silicon ratio on the properties of fly ash-based tobermorite and its removal performance of Zn2+ and Mn2

The effects of calcium-to-silicon ratio on the properties of fly ash (FA)-based tobermorite and its removal performance of Zn2+ and Mn2+ were studied. The calcium-to-silicon ratio had a significant effect on the structural properties of the tobermorite samples. The specific surface area, pore volume, and average pore size of mesoporous tobermorite samples with different calcium-to-silicon ratios (0.8TOB, 1.2TOB, and 1.6TOB) were much larger than those of FA, and those of 1.2TOB were the largest, which were 53.29 m2/g, 0.448 cm3/g, and 30.50 nm, respectively. The removal efficiencies of Zn2+ and Mn2+ by 1.2TOB were 84.19% and 47.67%, respectively, which were much higher than those of 0.8TOB (60.62% and 42.41%), 1.6TOB (46.69% and 24.31%), and FA (4.13% and 6.95%). The adsorption of Zn2+ and Mn2+ by 0.8TOB, 1.2TOB, and 1.6TOB was corresponding to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. Particularly, 1.2 TOB showed the highest maximum adsorption capacities of Zn2+ and Mn2+ calculated from the Langmuir model, which were 129.70 mg/g and 82.09 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption mechanisms might be due to the combination with -OH and the interlayer adsorption of the samples. This research provides new insight into the fly ash-based adsorbents towards Zn2+ and Mn2+ in wastewater.

Iron and silicon modified biochar for enhancing cadmium removal from water: Unveiling the crucial role of iron-induced silicon dissolution

The interaction mechanisms of silicon (Si) and active ingredient iron (Fe) on cadmium (Cd) removal are still unknown. Herein, the Fe/Si modified biochar (Fe/Si-BC) was synthesized to enhance Cd removal by pre-immersion of Fe and ball milling loading of Si. Detailed characterizations indicated that Fe and Si were successfully introduced into Fe/Si-BC, resulting in the formation of a new metallic silicate (Ca2.87Fe0.13(SiO3)2). The maximum Cd adsorption capacity of Fe/Si-BC (31.66 mg g-1) was 3.6 times and 2.5 times higher than that of Fe-BC (8.89 mg g-1) and Si-BC (11.03 mg g-1), respectively, deriving from an enhancement of Si dissolution induced by Fe introduction. The dissolved Si could capture and combine Cd to form CdSiO3 precipitation, which was strongly supported by the random forest regression and correlation between dissolved Si content and Cd adsorption capacity. This study advances the mechanistic insights into synergistic functions of Si and Fe in Cd removal.

Utilization of biochar for remediation of heavy metals in aqueous environments: A review and bibliometric analysis

Biochar usage for removing heavy metals from aqueous environments has emerged as a promising research area with significant environmental and economic benefits. Using the PICO approach, the research question aimed to explore using biochar to remove heavy metals from aqueous media. We merged the data from Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection databases to acquire a comprehensive perspective of the subject. The PRISMA guidelines were applied to establish the search parameters, identify the appropriate articles, and collect the bibliographic information from the publications between 2010 and 2022. The bibliometric analysis showed that biochar-based heavy metal remediation is a research field with increasing scholarly attention. The removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) was the most studied among the heavy metals. We identified five main clusters centered on adsorption, water treatment, adsorption models, analytical techniques, and hydrothermal carbonization by performing keyword co-occurrence analysis. Trending topics include biochar reusability, modification, acid mine drainage (AMD), wastewater treatment, and hydrochar. The reutilization of heavy metal-loaded spent biochar includes transforming it into electrodes for supercapacitors or stable catalyst materials. This study provides a comprehensive overview of biochar-based heavy metal remediation in aquatic environments and highlights knowledge gaps and future research directions.

Adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of Cd(II) from wastewater by modified chicken manure biochar

Due to the threat to food supply and human health posed by cadmium-contaminated wastewater, a highly effective adsorbent is under necessary development to remove cadmium from wastewater. In this study, four new types of modified biochars with different modifier concentrations were prepared from chicken manure using K2FeO4 as a modifier, and the modified biochar KFBC1 with the best adsorption effect was obtained through optimal experiments. Various characterization analyses have shown that KFBC1 has a rough surface structure, abundant pore structure, and a large number of functional groups. Additionally, iron oxides are introduced on the surface of the biochar, which provided a favorable condition for the adsorption of Cd(II) in wastewater. The adsorption performance of Cd(II) on the biochar before and after modification was investigated through batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption kinetic model of KFBC1 to Cd(II) in solution was in accordance with the quasi-secondary kinetic model, and the adsorption isothermal model was in accordance with the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 330.06 mg/g, which was 5.15 fold of pristine BC. Meanwhile, the adsorption rate of Cd(II) by KFBC1 was positively correlated with dosage and pH. Pore adsorption, ion exchange, surface precipitation, interaction with -π electrons, and complexation of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface were considered as important mechanisms for the removal of Cd(II) by KFBC1. According to the results, KFBC1 is a novel and efficient adsorbent that can be used as a treatment agent for cadmium-contaminated wastewater.

The Effect of Sodium Alginate-Coated Nano-Zinc Oxide on the Growth Performance, Serum Indexes and Fecal Microbial Structure of Weaned Piglets

High dose of zinc oxide (ZnO) could improve growth performance and alleviate disease status, whereas it caused serious environmental pollution and bacterial resistance. This study was to investigate whether low doses of sodium alginate-coated nano zinc oxide (saZnO), a new type of zinc resource, could serve as a potential alternative to pharmacological doses of traditional ZnO in weaned piglets. A total of 144 crossbred piglets were randomly allocated into three groups, including a basal diet without the addition of Zn (CON), a basal diet with 1600 mg Zn/kg from traditional ZnO (ZnO), and a basal diet with 500 mg Zn/kg from saZnO (saZnO). The experiment lasted for 28 days. The results showed that supplementing with ZnO and saZnO for 14 and 28 days significantly improved body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) (p < 0.01) and markedly reduced the feed intake-to-gain ratio (F/G) (p < 0.05) and diarrhea rate. In addition, dietary ZnO and saZnO significantly increased the activities of the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (p < 0.01). Supplementing with saZnO also promoted the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), IgM and copper- and zinc-containing superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) in serum (p < 0.05), whereas a ZnO addition decreased the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) (p < 0.05), indicating the beneficial effect of Zn on antioxidant and immune functions. Piglets fed the ZnO diet showed higher serum Zn accumulations than those fed the CON and saZnO diets at d 28 (p < 0.01), and supplementing with ZnO and saZnO markedly contributed to Zn excretion in feces, especially in the ZnO diet (p < 0.01). Additionally, piglets fed the saZnO diet had greater valeric acid concentrations (p < 0.05) in their feces, while other short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were not affected by different treatments (p > 0.05). Microbial alpha diversity was reduced in the saZnO group compared with the CON group (p < 0.05), while an obvious separation of microbial composition, the marker of beta diversity, was shown among the three groups (p < 0.05). At the genus level, six genera, including Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Terrisporobacter, f_Muribaculaceae, Subdoligranulum and Intestinibacter, were pronouncedly increased in the ZnO and saZnO groups (p < 0.05); another nine species were dramatically downregulated, such as f_Lachnospiraceae, f_Prevotellaceae, f_Butyricicoccaceae and f_Ruminococcaceae (p < 0.05). Finally, a functional analysis indicated that altered microbes significantly changed the "Metabolism" pathway (p < 0.05). These findings suggested that saZnO could act as a feasible substitute for ZnO to reduce Zn emission and enhance growth performance, antioxidant and immune functions, and to adjust the structure of gut microbiota in piglets.

Hydrothermal Ammonia Carbonization of Rice Straw for Hydrochar to Separate Cd(II) and Zn(II) Ions from Aqueous Solution

Hydrochar is considered to be a good adsorbent for the separation of metal ions from aqueous solutions. However, the yield of hydrochar from raw straw is generally low, because the hydrothermal carbonization occurs via dehydration, polymerization, and carbonization. In this work, various hydrochar samples were prepared from rice straw with nitrogen and phosphorus salt; moreover, toilet sewage was used instead of nitrogen, and phosphorus salt and water were used to promote the polymerization and carbonization process. The modified carbon was characterized using XRD, XPS, SEM, and FTIR, and the adsorption capacity was investigated. A significant increase in hydrochar yield was observed when toilet sewage was used as the solvent in the hydrothermal carbonization process. The adsorption capacity of N/P-doped rice straw hydrochar for Cd2+ and Zn2+ metal ions was 1.1-1.4 times higher than that those using the rice straw hydrochar. The Langmuir models and pseudo-second-order models described the metal adsorption processes in both the single and binary-metal systems well. The characterization results showed the contribution of the surface complexation, the electrostatic interaction, the hydrogen bond, and the ion exchange to the extraction of Cd2+ and Zn2+ using N/P-doped rice straw hydrochar.

Adsorption of Rhodamine B and Pb(II) from aqueous solution by MoS2 nanosheet modified biochar: Fabrication, performance, and mechanisms

Mediated by polydopamine, MoS2 nanosheets were immobilized on the porous biochar derived from fungus residue, forming a novel biochar-based nanocomposite (MoS2-PDA@FRC) for the removal of Rhodamine B(RhB) and Pb(II) from water. Utilizing MoS2 nanosheets with abundant active adsorption sites, MoS2-PDA@FRC showed higher adsorption capacities than raw biochar, with 2.76 and 1.78 times higher capacities for RhB and Pb(II) respectively. MoS2-PDA@FRC also exhibited fast adsorption kinetics for RhB (120 min) and Pb (180 min) removal, as well as satisfactory adsorption selectivity in the presence of coexisting substances. The underlying removal mechanism was explored via Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Furthermore, during cyclic adsorption-regeneration and the fixed-bed adsorption experiments, the nanocomposite removed RhB and Pb(II) with high effectiveness and stability. Collectively, the results demonstrated the bright prospects of MoS2-PDA@FRC as a highly efficient decontamination agent of RhB and Pb(II) from water.

Enhanced removal performance of magnesium-modified biochar for cadmium in wastewaters: Role of active functional groups, processes, and mechanisms

In this study, a series of biochar products with different active functional groups were developed by one-pot coprecipitation method, including magnesium-modified biochar (MgBC) and functional group-grafted MgBC (Cys@MgBC, Try@MgBC, and Glu@MgBC), for effective adsorption of cadmium (Cd(II)) from wastewaters. These biochars exhibited excellent removal performance for Cd(II), particularly Cys@MgBC, whose maximum Cd(II) adsorption capacity reached 223.7 mg g-1. The highly active and weakly crystalline Mg could adsorb Cd(II) through precipitation and ion exchange, which was further promoted by the introduced functional groups through complexation and precipitation. After 120 d of natural process, the immobilization efficiency of Cd(II) by Cys@MgBC, Try@MgBC, and Glu@MgBC was still maintained at 98.7%, 95.2%, and 82.7% respectively. This study proposes and clarifies the complexation mechanism of functional group-grafted Mg-modified biochar for heavy metals, providing new insights into the practical application of these biochars.
