Silver Nanoparticle-Embedded Conductive Hydrogels for Electrochemical Sensing of Hydroquinone

In this work, a conductive hydrogel was successfully synthesized, taking advantage of the high number density of active amino and hydroxyl groups in carboxymethyl chitosan and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. These biopolymers were effectively coupled via hydrogen bonding with the nitrogen atoms of the heterocyclic rings of conductive polypyrrole. The inclusion of another biobased polymer, sodium lignosulfonate (LS), was effective to achieve highly efficient adsorption and in-situ reduction of silver ions, leading to silver nanoparticles that were embedded in the hydrogel network and used to further improve the electro-catalytic efficiency of the system. Doping of the system in the pre-gelled state led to hydrogels that could be easily attached to the electrodes. The as-prepared silver nanoparticle-embedded conductive hydrogel electrode exhibited excellent electro-catalytic activity towards hydroquinone (HQ) present in a buffer solution. At the optimum conditions, the oxidation current density peak of HQ was linear over the 0.1-100 μM concentration range, with a detection limit as low as 0.12 μM (signal-to-noise of 3). The relative standard deviation of the anodic peak current intensity was 1.37% for eight different electrodes. After one week of storage in a 0.1 M Tris-HCl buffer solution at 4 °C, the anodic peak current intensity was 93.4% of the initial current intensity. In addition, this sensor showed no interference activity, while the addition of 30 μM CC, RS, or 1 mM of different inorganic ions does not have a significant impact on the test results, enabling HQ quantification in actual water samples.

Aptamer-binding zirconium-based metal-organic framework composites prepared by two conjunction approaches with enhanced bio-sensing for detecting isocarbophos

A novel label-free and enzyme-free detection strategy has been developed for the electrochemical biosensor detection of isocarbophos (ICP) using UiO-66-NH₂ and aptamer as the signal transducers. In this work, the ICP aptamers were attached to UiO-66-NH₂ through physical mixing and chemical combination methods. In the presence of ICP, the aptamers could undergo conformational change and bind to them, which prevent the electron transfer to the surface of electrode. By comparing the two conjunction approaches of aptasensors, these proposed strategies could selectively and sensitively detect ICP with a detection limit of 6 ng mL^-1 (20.74 nM) and 0.9 ng mL^-1 (3.11 nM). Furthermore, we have also demonstrated the capability of this strategy in the detection of ICP in real samples from vegetable and fruit extract, indicating the potential application of this strategy in food safety issues.

Continuous and Polarization-Tuned Redox Capacitive Anion Sensing at Electroactive Interfaces

Continuous, real-time ion sensing is of great value across various environmental and medical scenarios but remains underdeveloped. Herein, we demonstrate the potential of redox capacitance spectroscopy as a sensitive and highly adaptable ion sensing methodology, exemplified by the continuous flow sensing of anions at redox-active halogen bonding ferrocenylisophthalamide self-assembled monolayers. Upon anion binding, the redox distribution of the electroactive interface, and its associated redox capacitance, are reversibly modulated, providing a simple and direct sensory readout. Importantly, the redox capacitance can be monitored at a freely chosen, constant electrode polarization, providing a facile means of tuning both the sensor analytical performance and the anion binding affinity, by up to 1 order of magnitude. In surpassing standard voltammetric methods in terms of analytical performance and adaptability, these findings pave the way for the development of highly sensitive and uniquely tunable ion sensors. More generally, this methodology also serves as a powerful and unprecedented means of simultaneously modulating and monitoring the thermodynamics and kinetics of host-guest interactions at redox-active interfaces.

Electrochemical Anion Sensing: Supramolecular Approaches

Anions play a vital role in a broad range of environmental, technological, and physiological processes, making their detection/quantification valuable. Electroanalytical sensors offer much to the selective, sensitive, cheap, portable, and real-time analysis of anion presence where suitable combinations of selective (noncovalent) recognition and transduction can be integrated. Spurred on by significant developments in anion supramolecular chemistry, electrochemical anion sensing has received considerable attention in the past two decades. In this review, we provide a detailed overview of all electroanalytical techniques that have been used for this purpose, including voltammetric, impedimetric, capacititive, and potentiometric methods. We will confine our discussion to sensors that are based on synthetic anion receptors with a specific focus on reversible, noncovalent interactions, in particular, hydrogen- and halogen-bonding. Apart from their sensory properties, we will also discuss how electrochemical techniques can be used to study anion recognition processes (e.g., binding constant determination) and will furthermore provide a detailed outlook over future efforts and promising new avenues in this field.

Determination of Phosphate in Human Serum with Zirconium/Reduced Graphene Oxide Modified Electrode

An electrochemical phosphate sensor based on zirconium and reduced graphene oxide modified pencil graphite electrode (Zr/rGO-PGE) is proposed. The XRD, CV and EIS confirmed that GO was partially reduced on the PGE. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) exhibited the layered and wrinkled structures for the rGO-PGE and Zr/rGO-PGE, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry showed the immobilized rGO was highly stable and had high activity toward zirconium adsorption. The prepared electrode was used for the electrochemical determination of phosphate. Based on the optimum condition using differential pulse voltammetry, the limit of detection and sensitivity for phosphate was obtained as [0.011(± 0.004) μM] (S/N = 3) and [622.4(± 9.6) μA μM^-1 cm^-2], respectively. The sensor was successfully evaluated for phosphate determination in human serum samples. In practical terms, the construction of this sensor was exceptionally simple, fast, cost effective and reproducible.

Aptamer-Embedded Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Composites Prepared by De Novo Bio-Inspired Approach with Enhanced Biosensing for Detecting Trace Analytes

A series of Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) composites embedded with three kinds of aptamer strands (509-MOF@Apt) were achieved by a one-step de novo synthetic approach. A platform for ultrasensitive detection of analytes, namely, thrombin, kanamycin, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), was also established. Considering the conformational changes caused by the binding interactions between aptamer strands and targeted molecules, the label-free electrochemical aptasensors based on 509-MOF@Apt composites could be developed to detect various target molecules. By comparing the common fabrication approaches of aptasensors, a distinct determination mechanism was presented through analysis of the electrochemical measurements on different interaction behaviors between probe aptamer strands and 509-MOF materials. The optimized aptasensors based on 509-MOFs@Apt demonstrated excellent sensitivity (with the detection limit of 0.40, 0.37, and 0.21 pg mL^-1 for CEA, thrombin, and kanamycin, respectively), stability, repeatability, and applicability. This work will provide a new platform for direct and feasible detection in biosensing related to clinical diagnostics and therapeutics, and further, extend the scope of potential applications for MOF materials.

Simple and fast electrochemical detection of sequence-specific DNA via click chemistry-mediated labeling of hairpin DNA probes with ethynylferrocene

In this work, the azido-containing hairpins were exploited as the capture probes; after hybridization, labeling of electroactive probes, ethynylferrocene, was conveniently and efficiently achieved via the Cu(i)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition.

PEI/Zr⁴⁺-coated nanopore for selective and sensitive detection of ATP in combination with single-walled carbon nanotubes

By virtue of a biomimetic nanopore and single-walled carbon nanotubes, a new sensor for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) detection is designed. As compared to the routine approach, the present scenario does not entail the surface modification of nanopore with analyte-specific probes. The underlying mechanism relies on a symmetric nanopore sequentially modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and Zr(4+) that can quantitate the concentration of ATP-bound aptamer, while other free aptamers are removed by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The detection limit of the nanopore sensor is 27.46 nM, and the linear range is from 50 nM to 400 nM. The biosensor with an excellent selectivity against guanosine triphosphate (GTP), uridine triphosphate (UTP), and cytosine triphosphate (CTP) can be applied in the real samples such as Hela cell.

Biomimetic nanopore for sensitive and selective detection of Hg(ii) in conjunction with single-walled carbon nanotubes

Through SWNTs, duplex DNA derived from folding of single-stranded DNA can be quantitated with Zr⁴⁺–PEI coated cone-shaped nanopore. With Hg²⁺ detection, sensitivity and selectivity based on this paradigm is guaranteed without probe immobilization.

Gold-deferrioxamine nanometric interface for selective recognition of Fe(III) using square wave voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods

Deferrioxamine, a bacterial hydroxamic siderophore having high binding affinity for Fe(III), is used in its immobilized form, as self-assembled monolayer on Au, for accumulation and recognition of Fe(III) from the solution phase. The accumulated Fe(III) is detected via both active mode based on faradaic reduction current of Fe(III), and inactive mode based on impedimetric effect of accumulated Fe(III) against redox reaction of a suitable probe. Appropriate electrochemical techniques, square wave voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, are used for the transduction of analytical signals obtained by this sensor. Then, the parameters influencing the sensor response are optimized. In the best conditions, a linear response, from 1.0×10(-10) to 1.0×10(-7)M Fe(III) in logarithmic scale with a detection limit of 2.0×10(-11)M, and mean relative standard deviation of 1.7% for n=4 is observed. The results show that the sensor can be used for determination of Fe(III) in the presence of various inorganic ions and biological species. Validity of the method and applicability of the sensor are successfully tested by determination of Fe(III) in various real samples including plant tissue (corn leaves), industrial alloy (Ferrotitanium), and pharmaceutical samples (Venofer(®) ampoule, Ironorm(®) capsule, and V.M. Protein(®) powder).

Lipid bilayer templated gold nanoparticles nanoring formation using zirconium ion coordination chemistry

We used positively charged lipids to prepare lipid bilayer assemblies (LBAs) upon which we assembled negatively charged gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Treatment of the assembly with zirconium chloride resulted in the formation of nanorings of the diameters inversely related to the zirconium ion concentration. The nanorings were attributed to the zirconium ion coordinated AuNPs formed during the lipid bilayer budding process promoted by the acid effect of zirconium chloride. Nanoring organization was also dependent on the fluidity of lipid bilayers, an indication of LBA-assisted nanomaterials organization. We suggest that such bioorganic-inorganic hybrid assemblies coupled to unique topological and morphological variations might be useful as stimuli-responsive sensors or storage compartments for proteins or drugs.
