Abstract
Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) are low dimensional carbon based materials with interesting physical, chemical and biological properties that enable their applications in numerous fields. GQDs possess unique electronic structures that impart special functional attributes such as tunable optical/electrical properties in addition to heteroatom-doping and more importantly a propensity for surface functionalization for applications in biosensing and bioimaging. Herein, we review the recent advancements in the top-down and bottom-up approaches for the synthesis of GQDs. Following this, we present a detailed review of the various surface properties of GQDs and their applications in bioimaging and biosensing. GQDs have been used for fluorescence imaging for visualizing tumours and monitoring the therapeutic responses in addition to magnetic resonance imaging applications. Similarly, the photoluminescence based biosensing applications of GQDs for the detection of hydrogen peroxide, micro RNA, DNA, horse radish peroxidase, heavy metal ions, negatively charged ions, cardiac troponin, etc. are discussed in this review. Finally, we conclude the review with a discussion on future prospects.

Abstract
The accumulation of pesticide residues poses a significant threat to the health of people and the surrounding ecological systems. However, traditional methods are not only costly but require expertise in analysis. An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor was developed using chitosan and molybdenum disulfide (CTS-MoS2), along with acetylene black (AB@CTS) for the rapid detection of malathion residues. Due to the weak interaction force, simple composite may lead to uneven dispersion; MoS2 and AB were dissolved in CTS solution, respectively, and utilized the biocompatibility of CTS to interact with each other on the electrode. The MoS2 nanosheets provided a large specific surface area, enhancing the utilization rate of catalytic materials, while AB exhibited excellent conductivity. Additionally, the dendritic polylysine (PLL) contained numerous amino groups to load abundant luminol to catalyze hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). The proposed ECL aptasensor obtained a low detection limit of 2.75 × 10-3 ng/mL (S/N = 3) with a good detection range from 1.0 × 10-2 ng/mL to 1.0 × 103 ng/mL, demonstrating excellent specificity, repeatability, and stability. Moreover, the ECL aptasensor was successfully applied for detecting malathion pesticide residues in authentic samples with recovery rates ranging from 94.21% to 99.63% (RSD < 2.52%). This work offers valuable insights for advancing ECL sensor technology in future applications.

Abstract
2,4-Dinitroaniline is a multifunctional product and has been applicated in various fields. It has absorbed much concerns due to its large consumption and occurrence in many environmental matrices. It is urgent to explore reliable and sensitive measurement technology. Present study described an outstanding fluorescence sensor constructed with carbon dots (CDs) derived from vitamin B1. The CDs were fabricated by dealing with a facile hydrothermal process, and exhibited good water solubility, fluorescence stability and highly fluorescence quenching characteristics in presence of 2,4-dinitroaniline. The excitation and emission wavelengths of the obtained CDs were 305 and 378 nm, respectively. The sensor displayed good selectivity and sensitivity for 2,4-dinitroaniline. Good linearity can be achieved in two-stage of 0.2-3 μmol L-1 and 3-20 μmol L-1. The sensor earned low detection limit for 2,4-dinitroaniline down to 0.05 μmol L-1. The sensor has been commendably employed for analysis of 2,4-dinitroaniline in real aqueous samples with spiked recoveries in the range of 95.0-99.6%. The proposed sensor provided a promising alternative for analysis of environmental pollutants or other meaningful employment.

Abstract
Doping plays a crucial role in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) due to the followings: (1) Modulation of electronic structure, alteration of the surface state of nanoparticles (NPs), providing effective protection from the surrounding environment, thereby leading to ECL emitters with exceptional properties including tunable spectra, high luminescence efficiency, low excitation potential, and good stability. (2) Employment of doped NPs as promising coreactant alternatives due to the presence of functional groups such as amines induced by NP doping. (3) Serving as novel co-reaction accelerators (CRAs) for ECL through doping induced high catalytic properties. (4) Behaving as excellent carriers to load ECL emitters, recognition elements, and catalysts due to doping-induced larger surface area, higher conductivity and better biocompatibility of NPs. As a consequence, doped NPs have aroused broad interest and found wide applications in various ECL sensing platforms. In this review, the current promising improvements, concepts, and excellent applications of doped NPs for ECL biosensing are addressed. We aim to bring to light the physicochemical characteristics of various doped NPs that endow them with appealing ECL performance, leading to diverse applications in biosensing.

Abstract
Herein, a novel strategy for electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection of nitrite based on its sensitization effect on cathode ECL emission of 3,6-di(2-thienyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo [3,4-c] pyrrole-1,4-dione (TH-DPP) polymeric films (PTH-DPP) was formulated, by means of a one-step electropolymerization of TH-DPP with a short time on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). It was shown that the PTH-DPP film-modified GCE exhibited a strong ECL response when S2O82- was used as a co-reactant. The ECL emission could be greatly enhanced by PTH-DPP with nitrite in a K2S2O8/PBS solution system and occurred at a relatively lower potential in comparison with traditional cathode ECL emitter, leading to high sensitivity and good selectivity. The ECL sensor exhibits excellent linear relationship in the ranges of 0.3 to 100 μM and 100 to 1000 μM for nitrite detection, with an outstanding detection limit of 0.08 μM (S/N = 3). The ECL sensor provides an impressive outcome for the detection of practical samples.

Abstract
Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), as a novel graphene-based nanoparticle, presented a bright prospect in fields of biomedicine due to their excellent optical property. However, the biosafety assessment of GQDs is far behind their rapid development, which could restrict their wilder applications. This study focused on the potential adverse effects of two kinds of promising GQDs, i.e. nitrogen-doping graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and amino-modified graphene quantum dot (A-GQDs) on primary target organs of GNMs, including lung, liver and kidney. The intranasal instillation used here was to imitate the respiratory exposure of GQDs that is a commonly exposure route of GQDs in the environment. Although no severe damages associated with general health occurred in mice treated with GQDs, the fibrosis evidenced by statistically significant increases in the area of collagen I and TGF-ß1 and p-Smad3 expressions were observed in the lung, liver and kidney tissues. Interestingly, the fibrotic effect induced by GQDs could be effectively alleviated by a ferroptosis-specific inhibitor, which demonstrated a close relationship of fibrosis and ferroptosis. This study not only provides new insights on the toxicity mechanisms of GQDs, but also offers some efficient ways to control toxicity of GQDs, like dosage threshold and small molecular drugs.

Abstract
Along with the rapidly increasing applications of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) in the field of biomedicine, the exposure of N-GQDs undoubtedly pose a risk to the health of human beings, especially in the nervous system. In view of the lack of data from in vivo studies, this study used the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), which has become a valuable animal model in nanotoxicological studies due to its multiple advantages, to undertake a bio-safety assessment of N-GQDs in the nervous system with the assistance of a deep learning model. The findings suggested that accumulated N-GQDs in the nematodes' bodies damaged their normal behavior in a dose- and time-dependent manner, and the impairments of the nervous system were obviously severe when the exposure dosages were above 100 μg/mL. When assessing the morphological changes of neurons caused by N-GQDs, a quantitative image-based analysis based on a deep neural network algorithm (YOLACT) was used because traditional image-based analysis is labor-intensive and limited to qualitative evaluation. The quantitative results indicated that N-GQDs damaged dopaminergic and glutamatergic neurons, which are involved in the neurotoxic effects of N-GQDs in the nematode C. elegans. This study not only suggests a fast and economic C. elegans model to undertake the risk assessment of nanomaterials in the nervous system, but also provides a valuable deep learning approach to quantitatively track subtle morphological changes of neurons at an unbiased level in a nanotoxicological study using C. elegans.

Abstract
Herein, we validated novel functionalized hybrid semiconductor bioconjugates made of fluorescent quantum dots (QD) with the surface capped by chitosan (polysaccharide) and chemically modified with O-phospho-L-serine (OPS) that are biocompatible with different human cell sources. The conjugation with a directing signaling molecule (OPS) allows preferential accumulation in human bone mesenchymal stromal cells (HBMSC). The chitosan (Chi) shell with the fluorescent CdS core was characterized by spectroscopical (UV spectrophotometry and photoluminescence), by morphological techniques (Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)) and showed small size (ø 2.3 nm) and a stable photoluminescence emission band. The in vitro biocompatibility results were not dependent on the polysaccharide chain length (Chi with higher and lower molecular weight) but were remarkably affected by the surface modification (Chi or Chi-OPS). In addition, the efficiency of nanoparticles uptake by the cells was dependent on cells nature (human primary cells or cell lines) and tissue source (bone or skin) in the presence or absence of the OPS modification. The complex cellular uptake pathways involved in the cell labeling with the nanoparticles do not interfere on the normal cellular biology (adhesion and proliferation), osteogenic differentiation, and gene expression. The bone cells particles uptake evaluation showed a possible pathway by Caveolin-1 that regulates cell transduction in the membrane’s Caveolae. Caveolae mediates non-specific endocytosis, and it is upregulated in HBMSC. The OPS-modified nanoparticles promoted an intense intracellular trafficking by the HBMSCs that showed late-osteoblast phenotype with an increase of extracellular matrix (ECM) mineralization (Alizarin red and Von Kossa staining for calcium phosphate crystals). In this work, the OPS modified bioconjugated QD proved to be a reliable and stable fluorescent bioprobe for cell imaging and targeting research that could also help in clarifying some cellular mechanisms of particles intracellular traffic through the cytoplasmic membrane and osteogenic differentiation induction. The in vitro HBMSC’s biocompatibility responses indicated that the OPS-modified chitosan QDs have a prospective future in laboratory and pre-clinical applications such as bioimaging analysis and for ex-vivo cellular evaluation of biomedical implants.

Abstract
Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are carbon-based fluorescent nanomaterials having various applications due to attractive properties. But the low photoluminescence (PL) yield and monochromatic PL behavior of GQDs put limitations on their real-time applications. Therefore, heteroatom doping of GQDs is recognized as the best approach to modify the optical as well as electronic properties of GQDs by modifying their chemical composition and electronic structure. In this review, the new strategies for preparing the heteroatom (N, B, S, P) doped GQDs by using different precursors and methods are discussed in detail. The particle size, emission wavelength, PL emissive color, and quantum yield of recently developed heteroatom doped GQDs are reported in this article. The investigation of structure, crystalline nature, and composition of heteroatom doped GQDs by various characterization techniques such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are also described. The recent progress on the impact of mono or co-doping of heteroatoms on PL behavior, and optical, electrochemiluminescence (ECL), and electrochemical properties of GQDs is also surveyed. Further, heteroatom doped GQDs with attractive properties used in sensing of various metal ions, biomolecules, small organic molecules, etc. by using various techniques with different limits of detection are also summarized. This review provides progressive trends in the development of heteroatom doped GQDs and their various applications.

Abstract
Simple and efficient synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with anodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) remains a great challenge. Herein, we present an anodic ECL-sensing platform based on nitrogen-doped GQDs (N-GQDs), which enables sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose. N-GQDs are easily prepared using one-step molecular fusion between carbon precursor and a dopant in an alkaline hydrothermal process. The synthesis is simple, green, and has high production yield. The as-prepared N-GQDs exhibit a single graphene-layered structure, uniform size, and good crystalline. In the presence of H2O2, N-GQDs possess high anodic ECL activity owing to the functional hydrazide groups. With N-GQDs being ECL probes, sensitive detection of H2O2 in the range of 0.3–100.0 μM with a limit of detection or LOD of 63 nM is achieved. As the oxidation of glucose catalyzed by glucose oxidase (GOx) produces H2O2, sensitive detection of glucose is also realized in the range of 0.7–90.0 μM (LOD of 96 nM).

Abstract
An ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was developed based on MIL-53(Al)@CdS QDs and SiO2@AuNPs for trichlorfon detection. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were used as a loading platform that provided a large surface area to load targets and modified materials onto the electrode. At the same time, SiO2@AuNPs loaded plenty of AuNPs which effectively increased the ECL resonance energy transfer between the CdS QDs, so that the ECL signal was strongly quenched and resulted in an amplified response. In the range of 10-11-10-4 M, the ECL response showed a linear relationship with the concentration (logarithm) of trichlorfon, and the detection limit was 5.1 × 10-12 M (S/N = 3). When the biosensor was applied to detect trichlorfon in lettuce, broccoli, cucumber, and chives, the recoveries obtained from the spiked samples were 97%-105%, 102%-104%, 100%-104%, and 98%-104%, respectively. Thus, this novel ECL biosensor has potential applications for the analysis of trichlorfon in food samples.

Abstract
Graphene quantum dots (GQD) is an efficient nanomaterial composed of one or more layers of graphene with unique properties that combine both graphene and carbon dots (CDs). It can be synthesized using carbon-rich materials as precursors, such as graphite, macromolecules polysaccharides, and fullerene. This contribution emphasizes the utilization of GQD-based materials in the fields of sensing, bioimaging, energy storage, and corrosion inhibitors. Inspired by these numerous applications, various synthetic approaches have been developed to design and fabricate GQD, particularly bottom-up and top-down processes. In this context, the prime goal of this review is to emphasize possible eco-friendly and sustainable methodologies that have been successfully employed in the fabrication of GQDs. Furthermore, the fundamental and experimental aspects associated with GQDs such as possible mechanisms, the impact of size, surface alteration, and doping with other elements, together with their technological and industrial applications have been envisaged. Till now, understanding simple photo luminance (PL) operations in GQDs is very critical as well as there are various methods derived from the optical properties of manufactured GQDs can differ. Lack of determining exact size and morphology is highly required without loss of their optical features. Finally, GQDs are promising candidates in the after-mentioned application fields.

Abstract
The CdS/TiO2 nanocomposite (NC) photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was constructed based on a new sensing strategy for nitrite assay. The CdS etching process caused by nitrite-in-acid solution was confirmed and applied to nitrite sensing. The CdS etching phenomenon occurring on the sensor led to an obvious reduction in the photocurrent response under visible-light irradiation, which responded to the nitrite concentration. The CdS/TiO2 NC-based PEC sensor exhibited excellent performance on nitrite detection. The linear range for nitrite determination was from 1-100 and 100-500 μM, and the sensitivity of the PEC sensor was 2.91 and 0.186 μA μM-1 cm-2, respectively. The detection limit of the sensor was 0.56 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, the PEC sensor was also equipped with advantages such as good selectivity, excellent stability, low background, and recyclability. Satisfying results were obtained for the nitrite assay in real samples by such a PEC sensor. In summary, this work contributed a fresh idea to precisely determinate nitrite through PEC sensing.

Abstract
Quantum dots (QDs) have been established in our daily life, for instance, in display screens and light-harvesting technologies, mainly owing to their peculiar opto-electronic features. However, toxicity of inorganic QDs, such as CdSe, CdTe, and perovskites, limits their applications in biological environments for medical diagnosis and bio-imaging purposes. A new generation of QDs called carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been progressing rapidly over the past few years. CQDs have become as popular as other carbon-based nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), due to their ease of preparation, ultra-small size, biocompatibility, and bright luminescence.

Abstract
Tuning of the electronic spectra of carbon dots by means of inserting heteroatoms into the π-conjugated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) system is a popular tool to achieve a broad range of absorption and emission frequencies. Especially nitrogen atoms have been used successfully for that purpose. Despite the significant progress achieved with these procedures, the prediction of specific shifts in the UV-vis spectra and the understanding of the electronic transitions is still a challenging task. In this work, high-level quantum chemical methods based on multireference (MR) and single-reference (SR) methods have been used to predict the effect of different nitrogen doping patterns inserted into the prototypical PAH pyrene on its absorption spectrum. Furthermore, a simple classification scheme based on valence bond (VB) theory and the Clar sextet rule in combination with the harmonic oscillator measure of aromaticity (HOMA) index was applied to arrange the different doping structures into groups and rationalize their electronic properties. The results show a wide variety of mostly redshifts in the spectra as compared to the pristine pyrene case. The most interesting doping structures with the largest red shifts leading to absorption energies below one eV could be readily explained by the occurrence of diradical VB structures in combination with Clar sextets. Moreover, analysis of the electronic transitions computed with MR methods showed that several of the low-lying excited states possess double-excitation character, which cannot be realized by the popular SR methods and, thus, are simply absent in the calculated spectra.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent sensing platform based on nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) is presented, which is able to detect various metabolites (cholesterol, glucose, lactate, and xanthine) rapidly, sensitively, and selectively. Hg2+ can attach on the surface of N-GQDs, leading to the quenching of N-GQD fluorescence. In the presence of cysteine (Cys), Hg2+ is released from N-GQDs and associates with Cys. Then, the fluorescence of N-GQDs is recovered. Hydrogen peroxide, resulting from the enzymatic oxidation of metabolites, can convert two molecules of Cys into one molecule of cystine, which cannot bind with Hg2+. So, the fluorescence of N-GQDs quenched again. For cholesterol, glucose, lactate, and xanthine, the limits of detection are 0.035 μmol/L, 0.025 μmol/L, 0.07 μmol/L, and 0.04 μmol/L, respectively, and the linear ranges are 1-12 μmol/L, 0.06-3 μmol/L, 0.2-70 μmol/L, and 0.12-17 μmol/L, respectively. The presented method was applied to quantify metabolites in human blood samples with satisfactory results. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Due to the proliferative cancer rates, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, autoimmune diseases and a plethora of infections across the globe, it is essential to introduce strategies that can rapidly and specifically detect the ultralow concentrations of relevant biomarkers, pathogens, toxins and pharmaceuticals in biological matrices. Considering these pathophysiologies, various research works have become necessary to fabricate biosensors for their early diagnosis and treatment, using nanomaterials like quantum dots (QDs). These nanomaterials effectively ameliorate the sensor performance with respect to their reproducibility, selectivity as well as sensitivity. In particular, graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which are ideally graphene fragments of nanometer size, constitute discrete features such as acting as attractive fluorophores and excellent electro-catalysts owing to their photo-stability, water-solubility, biocompatibility, non-toxicity and lucrativeness that make them favorable candidates for a wide range of novel biomedical applications. Herein, we reviewed about 300 biomedical studies reported over the last five years which entail the state of art as well as some pioneering ideas with respect to the prominent role of GQDs, especially in the development of optical, electrochemical and photoelectrochemical biosensors. Additionally, we outline the ideal properties of GQDs, their eclectic methods of synthesis, and the general principle behind several biosensing techniques.

Abstract
A highly selective and sensitive aptasensor is described for voltammetric determination of the pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPS). The sensor was constructed by modifying a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with gold nanorods and a polymer that was molecularly imprinted with an aptamer against CPS. This results in double specific recognition. Under optimal conditions and a working potential as low as 0.22 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the nanotools has a dynamic range that covers the 1.0 fM - 0.4 pM CPS concentration range, and the detection limit is 0.35 fM. This is lower than any of the previously reported methods. This MIP-aptasensor is selective over structural analogs, stable, and adequately reproducible. It was successfully applied to the determination of CPS in spiked food samples. Graphical abstract Impedimetric detection of Chlorpyrifos by using a Fe(CN)63-/4- probe based on double recognition of aptamer-molecular imprinted polymer onto a glassy carbon electrode modified with gold nanorod nanocomposite. Abstract
Being exogenous environmental pollutants, nitroanilines (NAs) are highly toxic and have mutagenic and carcinogenic activity. Being lack of studies on interactions between NAs and lysozyme at molecular level, the binding interactions of lysozyme with o-nitroaniline (oNA), m-nitroaniline (mNA) and p-nitroaniline (pNA) were investigated by means of steady-state fluorescence, synchronous fluorescence, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, as well as molecular modeling. The experimental results revealed that the fluorescence of lysozyme is quenched by oNA and mNA through a static quenching, while the fluorescence quenching triggered by pNA is a combined dynamic and static quenching. The number of binding sites (n) and the binding constant (Kb) corresponding thermodynamic parameters ΔH⊖, ΔS⊖, ΔG⊖ at different temperatures were calculated. The reactions between NAs and lysozyme were spontaneous and entropy driven and the binding of NAs to lysozyme induced conformation changes of lysozyme. The difference of the position of -NO2 group affected the binding and the binding constants Kb decreased in the following pattern: Kb (pNA) >Kb (mNA) >Kb (oNA). Molecular docking studies were performed to reveal the most favorable binding sites of NAs on lysozyme. Our recently results could offer mechanistic insights into the nature of the binding interactions between NAs and lysozyme and provide information about the toxicity risk of NAs to human health.

Abstract
Doping of nitrogen is a promising strategy to modulate chemical, electronic, and structural functionalities of graphene (G)and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for their outstanding properties in energy and environmental applications. This paper reviews various synthesis approaches of nitrogen-doped graphene (N-G) and nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs).;Thermal, ultrasonic, solvothermal, hydrothermal, and electron-beam methods have been applied to synthesize N-G and N-GQDs.These nitrogen-doped carbon materials are characterized to obtain their structural configurations in order to achieve better performance in their applications compared to only either graphene or graphene quantum dots. Both N-G and N-GQDs may be converted into functional materials by integrating with other compounds such as metal oxides/nitrides, polymers, and semiconductors. These functional materials demonstrate superior performance over N-G and N-GQDs materials.Examples of applications of N-G and N-GQDs include supercapacitors, batteries, sensors, fuel cells, solar cells, and photocatalyst.

Electrochemiluminescent aptasensor for thrombin using nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots. Mikrochim Acta 2018; 185:430. [PMID: 30143874 DOI: 10.1007/s00604-018-2942-z] [Citation(s) in RCA: 12] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/17/2018] [Accepted: 08/02/2018] [Indexed: 10/28/2022]
Abstract
An electrochemiluminescent (ECL) aptamer based method is described for the determination of thrombin. Three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene oxide (3D-NGO) was placed on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to provide an electrode surface that displays excellent electrical conductivity and acts as a strong emitter of ECL. The modified electrode was further coated with chitosan via electrodeposition. Finally, the amino-modified aptamer was immobilized on the modified GCE. The interaction between thrombin and aptamer results in a decrease in ECL. The assay has a linear response in the 1 fM to 1 nM thrombin concentration range and a 0.25 fM lower detection limit (at an S/N ratio of 3). The method was applied to the determination of thrombin in spiked human plasma samples, and recoveries ranged between 94 and 105% (with RSDs of <3.6%). The calibration plot was recorded at potential and wavelength of fluorescence emission (wavelength: 445 nm; potential: 0 to -2 V). Graphical abstract A bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) does not display electrochemiluminescence (ECL). If, however, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots, chitosan, and three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene oxide (NGQD-chitosan/3D-NGO) are electrodeposited on the GCE, strong ECL can be observed. The ECL intensity decreased after aptamer and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were dropped onto the electrode (curve a). However, the ECL further decreases after addition of thrombin (TB; curve b).

Abstract
Nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) were synthesized to explore and extend their potential applications in biomedical field. The hemocompatibility and cytotoxity of the obtained N-GQDs were primarily assessed at concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 μg/ml. From the results, it was found that the proliferation of rat Bone Mesenchymal Stem Cells (rBMSCs) was depressed to a certain extent after incubating with the high concentration (100 μg/ml) of N-GQDs. The nanoscale size and superior dispersibility endow N-GQDs with good cell permeability. Meanwhile, owing to their intrinsic photoluminescence characteristic, the N-GQDs can be used to label cells with high uniformity and light stability in absence of chemical dyes. More importantly, the up-regulated expression of alkaline phosphate (ALP), extracellular matrix, osteopontin (OPN) and osteocalcin (OCN) in rBMSCs cultured with N-GQDs, indicating N-GQDs have the abilities to promote rBMSCs osteogenic differentiation. This work would help give a new insight into the advantages of N-GQDs and pave the way for application of N-GQDs in regenerative medicine fields.

Abstract
In this paper, a facilely prepared electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was developed for Escherichia coli O157:H7 quantitative detection based on a polydopamine (PDA) surface imprinted polymer (SIP) and nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs). N-GQDs with a high quantum yield of 43.2% were synthesized. The uniform PDA SIP film for E. coli O157:H7 was established successfully with a facile route. The dopamine and target bacteria were electropolymerized directly on the electrode. After removal of the E. coli O157:H7 template, the established PDA SIP can selectively recognize E. coli O157:H7. Accordingly, E. coli O157:H7 polyclonal antibody (pAb) was labeled with N-GQDs. The bioconjugation of SIP-E. coli O157:H7/pAb-N-GQDs can generate intensive ECL irradiation with K2S2O8. As a result, E. coli O157:H7 was detected with the ECL sensing system. Under optimal conditions, the linear relationships between the ECL intensity and E. coli O157:H7 concentration were obtained from 101 colony-forming units (CFU) mL-1 to 107 CFU mL-1 with a limit of detection of 8 CFU mL-1. The biosensor based on this SIP film was applied in water sample detection successfully. The N-GQD-based ECL analytical method for E. coli O157:H7 was reported for the first time. The sensing system had high selectivity to the target analyte, provided new opportunities for use, and increased the rate of disease diagnosis and treatment and the prevention of pathogens.

Novel N-Doped Carbon Dots/β-Cyclodextrin Nanocomposites for Enantioselective Recognition of Tryptophan Enantiomers. SENSORS 2016; 16:s16111874. [PMID: 27834863 PMCID: PMC5134533 DOI: 10.3390/s16111874] [Citation(s) in RCA: 30] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/25/2016] [Revised: 10/14/2016] [Accepted: 10/28/2016] [Indexed: 01/24/2023]
Abstract
Based on N-doped carbon dots/β-cyclodextrin nanocomposites modified glassy carbon electrodes (N-CDs/β-CD/GCE), an effective electrochemical sensor for enantioselective recognition of tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers was developed by differential pulse voltammograms (DPVs). Fluorescent N-CDs were synthesized through a hydrothermal method and characterized by spectroscopic approaches. The N-CDs/β-CD nanocomposites were efficiently electrodeposited on the surface of GCE through C-N bond formation between N-CDs and electrode. The obtained N-CDs/β-CD/GCE was characterized by multispectroscopic and electrochemical methods. Such N-CDs/β-CD/GCE generated a significantly lower Ip and more negative Ep in the presence of l-Trp in DPVs, which was used for the enantioselective recognition of Trp enantiomers. The N-CDs/β-CD nanocomposites showed different binding constants for tryptophan enantiomers, and they further selectively bonded with l-Trp to form inclusion complexes. This N-CDs/β-CD/GCE combined advantages of N-CDs with strong C-N binding ability and β-CD with specific recognition of Trp enantiomers to fabricate a novel sensing platform for enantioselective recognition of Trp enantiomers. This strategy provided the possibility of using a nanostructured sensor to discriminate the chiral molecules in bio-electroanalytical applications.
