Generation of genetic codes with 2-adic codon algebra and adaptive dynamics

This is a brief review on modeling genetic codes with the aid of 2-adic dynamical systems. In this model amino acids are encoded by the attractors of such dynamical systems. Each genetic code is coupled to the special class of 2-adic dynamics. We consider the discrete dynamical systems, These are the iterations of a function F:Z2→Z2, where Z2 is the ring of 2-adic numbers (2-adic tree). A genetic code is characterized by the set of attractors of a function belonging to the code generating functional class. The main mathematical problem is to reduce degeneration of dynamic representation and select the optimal generating function. Here optimality can be treated in many ways. One possibility is to consider the Lipschitz functions playing the crucial role in general theory of iterations. Then we minimize the Lip-constant. The main issue is to find the proper biological interpretation of code-functions. One can speculate that the evolution of the genetic codes can be described in information space of the nucleotide-strings endowed with ultrametric (treelike) geometry. A code-function is a fitness function; the solutions of the genetic code optimization problem are attractors of the code-function. We illustrate this approach by generation of the standard nuclear and (vertebrate) mitochondrial genetics codes.

Life, its definition, origin, evolution, and four-dimensional hierarchical structure

The main unique features of biological systems are reviewed, and four necessary and sufficient attributes of life are formulated, based on the ideas of Ervin Bauer. The possibility of the occurrence of each of these attributes during the origin of life is analyzed. As a result, different scenarios for the origin of life are presented, with their pros and cons. Next, the mainstream of biological evolution is discussed, considering it as a special case of general complexification, and structuredness is defined as a quantitative measure of structural complexity. By introducing the concepts of post-dissipative structure and ratcheting process based on "frozen" patterns, their role in the generation of biological structures underlying biological evolution is demonstrated. Furthermore, it is proposed that all living things can be divided into micro- (unicellular) and macro- (multicellular) creatures, which differ from each other even more radically than the difference between prokaryotes and unicellular eukaryotes. Then the fifth, sufficient, but not necessary attribute of life, hierarchicality, is formulated, which is fully applicable only to macrolife. It is also shown that living organisms are primarily chemodynamic rather than thermodynamic systems, and three basic laws of biochemodynamics are formulated. Finally, fifteen basic features of living beings, grouped into four basic blocks, are summarized.

The tri-flow adaptiveness of codes in major evolutionary transitions

Life codes increase in both number and variety with biological complexity. Although our knowledge of codes is constantly expanding, the evolutionary progression of organic, neural, and cultural codes in response to selection pressure remains poorly understood. Greater clarification of the selective mechanisms is achieved by investigating how major evolutionary transitions reduce spatiotemporal and energetic constraints on transmitting heritable code to offspring. Evolution toward less constrained flows is integral to enduring flow architecture everywhere, in both engineered and natural flow systems. Beginning approximately 4 billion years ago, the most basic level for transmitting genetic material to offspring was initiated by protocell division. Evidence from ribosomes suggests that protocells transmitted comma-free or circular codes, preceding the evolution of standard genetic code. This rudimentary information flow within protocells is likely to have first emerged within the geo-energetic and geospatial constraints of hydrothermal vents. A broad-gauged hypothesis is that major evolutionary transitions overcame such constraints with tri-flow adaptations. The interconnected triple flows incorporated energy-converting, spatiotemporal, and code-based informational dynamics. Such tri-flow adaptations stacked sequence splicing code on top of protein-DNA recognition code in eukaryotes, prefiguring the transition to sexual reproduction. Sex overcame the spatiotemporal-energetic constraints of binary fission with further code stacking. Examples are tubulin code and transcription initiation code in vertebrates. In a later evolutionary transition, language reduced metabolic-spatiotemporal constraints on inheritance by stacking phonetic, phonological, and orthographic codes. In organisms that reproduce sexually, each major evolutionary transition is shown to be a tri-flow adaptation that adds new levels of code-based informational exchange. Evolving biological complexity is also shown to increase the nongenetic transmissibility of code.

The calculus of codes - From entropy, complexity, and information to life

Exploring the core components that define living systems and their operational mechanisms within emerging biological entities is a complex endeavor. In the realm of biological systems literature, the terms matter, energy, information, complexity, and entropy are frequently referenced. However, possessing these concepts alone does not guarantee a comprehensive understanding or the ability to reconstruct the intricate nature of life. This study aims to illuminate the trajectory of these organic attributes, presenting a theoretical framework that delves into the integrated role of these concepts in biology. We assert that Code Biology serves as a pivotal steppingstone for unraveling the mechanisms underlying life. Biological codes (BCs) emerge not only from the interplay of matter and energy but also from Information. Contrary to deriving information from the former elements, we propose that information holds its place as a fundamental physical aspect. Consequently, we propose a continuum perspective called Calculus of Fundamentals involving three fundamentals: Matter, Energy, and Information, to depict the dynamics of BCs. To achieve this, we emphasize the necessity of studying Entropy and Complexity as integral organic descriptors. This perspective also facilitates the introduction of a mathematical theoretical framework that aids in comprehending continuous changes, the driving dynamics of biological fundamentals. We posit that Energy, Matter, and Information constitute the essential building blocks of living systems, and their interactions are governed by Entropy and Complexity analyses, redefined as biological descriptors. This interdisciplinary perspective of Code Biology sheds light on the intricate interplay between the controversial phenomenon of life and advances the idea of constructing a theory rooted in information as an organic fundamental.

Toward the Relational Formulation of Biological Thermodynamics

Classical thermodynamics employs the state of thermodynamic equilibrium, characterized by maximal disorder of the constituent particles, as the reference frame from which the Second Law is formulated and the definition of entropy is derived. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics analyzes the fluxes of matter and energy that are generated in the course of the general tendency to achieve equilibrium. The systems described by classical and non-equilibrium thermodynamics may be heuristically useful within certain limits, but epistemologically, they have fundamental problems in the application to autopoietic living systems. We discuss here the paradigm defined as a relational biological thermodynamics. The standard to which this refers relates to the biological function operating within the context of particular environment and not to the abstract state of thermodynamic equilibrium. This is defined as the stable non-equilibrium state, following Ervin Bauer. Similar to physics, where abandoning the absolute space-time resulted in the application of non-Euclidean geometry, relational biological thermodynamics leads to revealing the basic iterative structures that are formed as a consequence of the search for an optimal coordinate system by living organisms to maintain stable non-equilibrium. Through this search, the developing system achieves the condition of maximization of its power via synergistic effects.

Macroevolution, differentiation trees, and the growth of coding systems

An open process of evolution of multicellular organisms is based on the rearrangement and growth of the program of differentiation that underlies biological morphogenesis. The maintenance of the final (adult) stable non-equilibrium state (stasis) of a developmental system determines the direction of the evolutionary process. This state is achieved via the sequence of differentiation events representable as differentiation trees. A special type of morphogenetic code, acting as a metacode governing gene expression, may include electromechanical signals appearing as differentiation waves. The excessive energy due to the incorporation of mitochondria in eukaryotic cells resulted not only in more active metabolism but also in establishing the differentiation code for interconnecting cells and forming tissues, which fueled the evolutionary process. The "invention" of "continuing differentiation" distinguishes multicellular eukaryotes from other organisms. The Janus-faced control, involving both top-down control by differentiation waves and bottom-up control via the mechanical consequences of cell differentiations, underlies the process of morphogenesis and results in the achievement of functional stable final states. Duplications of branches of the differentiation tree may be the basis for continuing differentiation and macroevolution, analogous to gene duplication permitting divergence of genes. Metamorphoses, if they are proven to be fusions of disparate species, may be classified according to the topology of fusions of two differentiation trees. In the process of unfolding of morphogenetic structures, microevolution can be defined as changes of the differentiation tree that preserve topology of the tree, while macroevolution represents any change that alters the topology of the differentiation tree.

Aging and group selection: New arguments in favor of partially directed evolution

In this study, theories of aging and its mechanisms under various environmental conditions were analyzed. The analysis of published data suggested that aging is a controlled process. It is known that many mathematical algorithms utilize an analogy of aging. However, this is possible only when a "target set" is known in advance. Various forms of selection in relation to aging were analyzed both collectively and separately. The general conclusion is that aging is one of the mechanisms of directed evolution. A model was constructed, which shows how aging is integrated into partially directed evolution.

How ambiguity codes specify molecular descriptors and information flow in Code Biology

The article presents IUPAC ambiguity codes for incomplete nucleic acid specification, and their use in Code Biology. It is shown how to use this nomenclature in order to extract accurate information on different properties of the biological systems. We investigated the use of ambiguity codes, as mathematical and logical operators and truth table elements, for the encoding of amino acids by means of the Standard Genetic Code. It is explained how to use ambiguity codes and truth functions in order to obtain accurate information on different properties of the biological systems. Nucleotide ambiguity codes could be applied to: 1. encoding descriptive information of nucleotides, amino acids and proteins (e.g., of polarity, relative solvent accessibility, atom depth, etc.), and 2. system modelling ranging from standard bioinformatics tools to classic evolutionary models (i.e. from Miyazawa-Jernigan statistical potential to Kimura three-substitution-type model, respectively). It is shown that the algorithms based on IUPAC ambiguity codes, Boolean functions and truth table, Probabilistic Square of Opposition/Semiotic Square and Klein 4-groups-could be used for the bioinformatics analyses and Relational data modelling in natural science. Underlying mathematical, logical and semiotic concepts of interest are presented and addressed.

Karyotype as code of codes: An inheritance platform to shape the pattern and scale of evolution

Organismal evolution displays complex dynamics in phase and scale which seem to trend towards increasing biocomplexity and diversity. For over a century, such amazing dynamics have been cleverly explained by the apparently straightforward mechanism of natural selection: all diversification, including speciation, results from the gradual accumulation of small beneficial or near-neutral alterations over long timescales. However, although this has been widely accepted, natural selection makes a crucial assumption that has not yet been validated. Specifically, the informational relationship between small microevolutionary alterations and large macroevolutionary changes in natural selection is unclear. To address the macroevolution-microevolution relationship, it is crucial to incorporate the concept of organic codes and particularly the "karyotype code" which defines macroevolutionary changes. This concept piece examines the karyotype from the perspective of two-phased evolution and four key components of information management. It offers insight into how the karyotype creates and preserves information that defines the scale and phase of macroevolution and, by extension, microevolution. We briefly describe the relationship between the karyotype code, the genetic code, and other organic codes in the context of generating evolutionary novelties in macroevolution and imposing constraints on them as biological routines in microevolution. Our analyses suggest that karyotype coding preserves many organic codes by providing system-level inheritance, and similar analyses are needed to classify and prioritize a large number of different organic codes based on the phases and scales of evolution. Finally, the importance of natural information self-creation is briefly discussed, leading to a call to integrate information and time into the relationship between matter and energy.

Is Darwinian selection a retrograde driving force of evolution?

Modern science has still not provided a satisfactory empirical explanation for the increasing complexity of living organisms through evolutionary history. As no agreed-upon definitions of the complexity exist, the working definition of biological complexity has been formulated. There is no theoretical reason to expect evolutionary lineages to increase in complexity over time, and there is no empirical evidence that they do so. In our discussion we have assumed the hypothesis that at the origins of life, evolution had to first involve autocatalytic systems that only subsequently acquired the capacity of genetic heredity. We discuss the role of Darwinian selection in evolution and pose the hypothesis that Darwinian selection acts predominantly as a retrograde driving force of evolution. In this context we understand the term retrograde evolution as a degeneration of living systems from higher complexity towards living systems with lower complexity. With the proposed hypothesis we have closed the gap between Darwinism and Lamarckism early in the evolutionary process. By Lamarckism, the action of a special principle called complexification force is understood here rather than inheritance of acquired characteristics.

On the semantics of ecoacoustic codes

Ecological codes have been defined as every biological code integrated by factors originated by the environmental context that participates in the codepoiesis process. Ecological codes create a strict relationship between the inner world of organsims and the external relational world, and represent the mechanism with which the vivo-scape is realized. Acoustic codes are used in nature to decode acoustic signals between individuals of the same or different species and belong to the category of biological codes. Ecoacoustic codes are the outcome of the evolution of acoustic codes, and results as the interplay between acoustic codes and environmental factors. Soundtope codes represent the results of emerging properties of the acoustic communities.

Reflexive structure of the conscious subject and the origin of language codes

The code paradigm in biological and social sciences arises to Aristotle. For conscious activity, Aristotle introduced the notion of reflexive self-awareness in sense perception. This reflexive process generates the codes that signify sensual perceptive events and constrain human behavior. Coding systems grow via the generation of hypertextual statements reflecting new meanings in the process defined by Marcello Barbieri as a codepoiesis. It results in the establishment of higher-level codes (metacodes) forming the semiotic screen that has a nature of the set of perceived objects internalized by the conscious subject in encoding the symbolic actions. The characteristic feature of the semiotic screen consists in its property of being shared between the communicating agents. A sufficient complexity of nervous system, through the appearance of mirror neurons that are fired both when a subject executes certain action and when he observes another subject performing a similar action, represents a prerequisite for the emergence of reflexive codes in evolution. The codes appearing as a result of reflexive awareness and establishing different sociotypes, span from the symbolic systems of art and music through the common language to the formal language of logic and mathematics. Social dynamics is based on the implementation of reflexive coding activity and results in the growth and decay of social systems and civilizations.

Genomic Instability Evolutionary Footprints on Human Health: Driving Forces or Side Effects?

In this work, we propose a comprehensive perspective on genomic instability comprising not only the accumulation of mutations but also telomeric shortening, epigenetic alterations and other mechanisms that could contribute to genomic information conservation or corruption. First, we present mechanisms playing a role in genomic instability across the kingdoms of life. Then, we explore the impact of genomic instability on the human being across its evolutionary history and on present-day human health, with a particular focus on aging and complex disorders. Finally, we discuss the role of non-coding RNAs, highlighting future approaches for a better living and an expanded healthy lifespan.

A self-sustaining serpentinization mega-engine feeds the fougerite nanoengines implicated in the emergence of guided metabolism

The demonstration by Ivan Barnes et al. that the serpentinization of fresh Alpine-type ultramafic rocks results in the exhalation of hot alkaline fluids is foundational to the submarine alkaline vent theory (AVT) for life's emergence to its 'improbable' thermodynamic state. In AVT, such alkaline fluids ≤ 150°C, bearing H2 > CH4 > HS--generated and driven convectively by a serpentinizing exothermic mega-engine operating in the ultramafic crust-exhale into the iron-rich, CO2> > > NO3--bearing Hadean ocean to result in hydrothermal precipitate mounds comprising macromolecular ferroferric-carbonate oxyhydroxide and minor sulfide. As the nanocrystalline minerals fougerite/green rust and mackinawite (FeS), they compose the spontaneously precipitated inorganic membranes that keep the highly contrasting solutions apart, thereby maintaining redox and pH disequilibria. They do so in the form of fine chimneys and chemical gardens. The same disequilibria drive the reduction of CO2 to HCOO- or CO, and the oxidation of CH4 to a methyl group-the two products reacting to form acetate in a sequence antedating the 'energy-producing' acetyl coenzyme-A pathway. Fougerite is a 2D-layered mineral in which the hydrous interlayers themselves harbor 2D solutions, in effect constricted to ~ 1D by preferentially directed electron hopping/tunneling, and proton Gröthuss 'bucket-brigading' when subject to charge. As a redox-driven nanoengine or peristaltic pump, fougerite forces the ordered reduction of nitrate to ammonium, the amination of pyruvate and oxalate to alanine and glycine, and their condensation to short peptides. In turn, these peptides have the flexibility to sequester the founding inorganic iron oxyhydroxide, sulfide, and pyrophosphate clusters, to produce metal- and phosphate-dosed organic films and cells. As the feed to the hydrothermal mound fails, the only equivalent sustenance on offer to the first autotrophs is the still mildly serpentinizing upper crust beneath. While the conditions here are very much less bountiful, they do offer the similar feed and disequilibria the survivors are accustomed to. Sometime during this transition, a replicating non-ribosomal guidance system is discovered to provide the rules to take on the incrementally changing surroundings. The details of how these replicating apparatuses emerged are the hard problem, but by doing so the progenote archaea and bacteria could begin to colonize what would become the deep biosphere. Indeed, that the anaerobic nitrate-respiring methanotrophic archaea and the deep-branching Acetothermia presently comprise a portion of that microbiome occupying serpentinizing rocks offers circumstantial support for this notion. However, the inescapable, if jarring conclusion is drawn that, absent fougerite/green rust, there would be no structured channelway to life.

Is information the other face of causation in biological systems?

Is information the other face of causation? This issue cannot be clarified without discussing how these both are related to physical laws, logic, computation, networks, bio-signaling, and the mind-body problem. The relation between information and causation is also intrinsically linked to many other concepts in complex systems theory such as emergence, self-organization, synergy, criticality, and hierarchy, which in turn involve various notions such as observer-dependence, dimensionality reduction, and especially downward causation. A canonical example proposed for downward causation is the collective behavior of the whole system at a macroscale that may affect the behavior of each its member at a microscale. In neuroscience, downward causation is suggested as a strong candidate to account for mental causation (free will). However, this would be possible only on the condition that information might have causal power. After introducing the Causal Equivalence Principle expanding the relativity principle for coarse-grained and fine-grained linear causal chains, and a set-theoretical definition of multiscale nested hierarchy composed of modular ⊂-chains, it is shown that downward causation can be spurious. It emerges only in the eyes of an observer, though, due to information that could not be obtained by "looking" exclusively at the behavior of a system at a microscale. On the other hand, since biological systems are hierarchically organized, this information gain is indicative of how information can be a function of scale in these systems and a prerequisite for scale-dependent emergence of cognition and consciousness in neural networks.

Toward understanding the emergence of life: A dual function of the system of nucleotides in the metabolically closed autopoietic organization

General structure of metabolism includes the reproduction of catalysts that govern metabolism. In this structure, the system becomes autopoietic in the sense of Maturana and Varela, and it is closed to efficient causation as defined by Robert Rosen. The autopoietic maintenance and operation of the catalysts takes place via the set of free nucleotides while the synthesis of catalysts occurs via the information encoded by the set of nucleotides arranged in polymers of RNA and DNA. Both energy charge and genetic information use the components of the same pool of nucleoside triphosphates, which is equilibrated by thermodynamic buffering enzymes such as nucleoside diphosphate kinase and adenylate kinase. This occurs in a way that the system becomes internally stable and metabolically closed, which initially could be realized at the level of ribozymes catalyzing basic metabolic reactions as well as own reproduction. The function of ATP, GTP, UTP, and CTP is dual, as these species participate both in the general metabolism as free nucleotides and in the transfer of genetic information via covalent polymerization to nucleic acids. The changes in their pools directly impact both bioenergetic pathways and nucleic acid turnover. Here we outline the concept of metabolic closure of biosystems grounded in the dual function of nucleotide coenzymes that serve both as energetic and informational molecules and through this duality generate the autopoietic performance and the ability for codepoietic evolutionary transformations of living systems starting from the emergence of prebiotic systems.

The reversibility of cellular determination: An evolutive pattern of epigenetic plasticity

Until the middle of the 20th century, embryogenesis patterns were considered as based on a rigid, unidirectional ontogenetic development, whose nuclear programming yields an irreversibility feature for cellular determination. Further empirical pieces of evidence have provided new insights about a certain reversibility to cellular determination, finding new biomolecular mechanisms (nuclear reprogramming, dedifferentiation, transdifferentiation) which have clearly shown that such a reversibility exists, warranting a certain cellular plasticity inside cell cycle; moreover, they seem mainly ruled by epigenetic factors. In this framework, evolution can be viewed as a systemic transformation of the spatiotemporal epigenetic organization, and the maintenance of the stable final adult stage includes a possibility of dedifferentiation at the particular points of ontogenetic development leading to the achievement of the final stage though the alternate sets of epigenetic trajectories. This paper is aimed to briefly outline historically the main aspects which have led to define the mechanisms of cellular plasticity, highlighting the chief empirical facts supporting it and the related still unresolved problematic issues.

Overcoming the limits of natural computation in biological evolution toward the maximization of system efficiency

The goal-directedness of biological evolution is realized via the anticipatory achievement of the final state of the system that corresponds to the condition of its perfection in self-maintenance and in adaptability. In the course of individual development, a biological system maximizes its power via synergistic effects and becomes able to perform external work most efficiently. In this state, defined as stasis, robust self-maintaining configurations act as attractors resistant to external and internal perturbations. This corresponds to the local energy–time constraints that most efficiently fit the integral optimization of the whole system. In evolution, major evolutionary transitions that establish new states of stasis are achieved via codepoiesis, a process in which the undecided statements of existing coding systems form the basis for the evolutionary unfolding of the system by assigning new values to them. The genetic fixation of this macroevolutionary process leads to new programmes of individual development representing the process of natural computation. The phenomenon of complexification in evolution represents a metasystem transition that results in maximization of a system’s power and in the ability to increase external work performed by the system.

The hiatus between organism and machine evolution: Contrasting mixed microbial communities with robots

Mixed microbial communities, usually composed of various bacterial and fungal species, are fundamental in a plethora of environments, from soil to human gut and skin. Their evolution is a paradigmatic example of intertwined dynamics, where not just the relations among species plays a role, but also the opportunities - and possible harms - that each species presents to the others. These opportunities are in fact affordances, which can be seized by heritable variations and selection. In this paper, starting from a systemic viewpoint of mixed microbial communities, we focus on the pivotal role of affordances in evolution and we contrast it to the artificial evolution of programs and robots. We maintain that the two realms are neatly separated, in that natural evolution proceeds by extending the space of its possibilities in a completely open way, while the latter is inherently limited by the algorithmic framework in which it is defined. This discrepancy characterizes also an envisioned setting in which robots evolve in the physical world. We present arguments supporting our claim and we propose an experimental setting for assessing our statements. Rather than just discussing the limitations of the artificial evolution of machines, the aim of this contribution is to emphasize the tremendous potential of the evolution of the biosphere, beautifully represented by the evolution of communities of microbes.

Complexification of eukaryote phenotype: Adaptive immuno-cognitive systems as unique Gödelian block chain distributed ledger

The digitization of inheritable information in the genome has been called the 'algorithmic take-over of biology'. The McClintock discovery that viral software based transposable elements that conduct cut-paste (transposon) and copy-paste (retrotransposon) operations are needed for genomic evolvability underscores the truism that only software can change software and also that viral hacking by internal and external bio-malware is the Achilles heel of genomic digital systems. There was a paradigm shift in genomic information processing with the Adaptive Immune System (AIS) 500 mya followed by the Mirror Neuron System (MNS), latterly mostly in primate brains, which reaches its apogee in human social cognition. The AIS and MNS involve distinctive Gödelian features of self-reference (Self-Ref) and offline virtual self-representation (Self-Rep) for complex self-other interaction with prodigious open-ended capacity for anticipative malware detection and novelty production within a unique blockchain distributed ledger (BCDL). The role of self-referential information processing, often considered to be central to the sentient self with origins in the immune system 'Thymic self', is shown to be part of the Gödel logic behind a generator-selector framework at a molecular level, which exerts stringent selection criteria to maintain genomic BCDL. The latter manifests digital and decentralized record keeping where no internal or external bio-malware can compromise the immutability of the life's building blocks and no novel blocks can be added that is not consistent with extant blocks. This is demonstrated with regard to somatic hypermutation with novel anti-body production in the face of external non-self antigen attacks.

The stochastic organization of genomes and the doctrine of energy-information evolution based on bio-antenna arrays

The article is devoted to the possibilities of considering the evolution of biological systems in connection with the unique emergent properties of antenna arrays, that is, systems of mutually matched antennas widely used in technology. Materials are presented in favor of the proposition that the evolution of biosystems can be formally considered as the evolution of systems of bio-antenna arrays and their energy-information wave activity, which participates in biological computation and contributes to the unification of body parts into a coherent whole. The use of digital antenna arrays in technology is based on their tensor-matrix theory. The author discovers a structural analogy of this theory with the tensor-matrix features of genetic coding systems, as well as algebraic modeling of the universal rules for the stochastic DNA organization of the genomes of higher and lower organisms. This analogy is just one of the facts presented in the article in favor of the usefulness of borrowing knowledge from modern antenna technology to consider the evolution of biosystems. The described new approach may exist along with other known approaches in evolutionary biology.

Human-driven spreading and evolution of plants during the Holocene epoch: The pioneering works of Valery Taliev

Valery Taliev (1872-1932) was one of the first natural scientists who investigated the importance of anthropogenic factors in the evolution and geographic distribution of higher plants. He outlined major parameters of the origin and spreading of weed plants, of the flora of riverbanks, and proposed a direct role of man in changing the balance between forests and steppes. Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as a predecessor of the epigenetic concept of evolution

The contribution of Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) to evolutionary biology is reviewed in commemoration of his 250th birthday. Geoffroy's views on saltational changes during embryogenesis of animals characterize him as a predecessor of the epigenetic concept of evolution, which is now developing in the frames of the extended evolutionary synthesis or evo-devo. While Lamarck distinguished between the two modes of evolution, one within the same level of organization and the other characterized by the transition to a more complex organization, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire attempted to explain the second mode by the changes in embryogenesis triggered by environmental influences. In this regard, he placed the phenomenon of complexification in the centre of the evolutionary context. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire can be considered also as an early predecessor of the cell theory. His ideas about the unique plan of structure for animal species and of the fundamental connections that establish the homology of anatomical parts represent an important contribution to the evolutionary concept.
