Valorization of residual lignocellulosic biomass in South America: a review

Residual lignocellulosic biomass (RLB) is a valuable resource that can help address environmental issues by serving as an alternative to fossil fuels and as a raw material for producing various value-added molecules. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the use of lignocellulosic waste in South America, a review was conducted over the last 4 years. The review focused on energy generation, biofuel production, obtaining platform molecules (such as ethanol, hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, and levulinic acid), and other materials of interest. The review found that Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador had the most RLB sources, with sugarcane, oil palm, and rice crop residues being the most prominent. In South America, RLB is used to produce biogas, syngas, hydrogen, bio-oil, biodiesel, torrefied biomass, pellets, and biomass briquettes. The most studied and produced value-added molecule was ethanol, followed by furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural, and levulinic acid. Other applications of interest that have been developed with RLB include obtaining activated carbon and nanomaterials. Significant progress has been made in South America in utilizing RLB, and some countries have been more proactive in regulating its use. However, there is still much to learn about the potential of RLB in each country. This review provides an updated perspective on the typification and valorization of residual biomass in South America and discusses the level of research and technology being applied in the region. This information can be helpful for future research on RLB in South America.

Evaluation of Queen Palm residues and kraft lignin in the production of biofuels using densification and slow pyrolysis technology

This study aims to enhance the energy use of two products of industry - Queen Palm residue and kraft lignin (KF) - through the combination of two technologies - briquetting and slow pyrolysis. The addition of 20% KF provided briquettes with higher physical, energy, and mechanical properties. The yields of the pyrolysis products were affected by both the pyrolysis temperature and the addition of KF. In the bio-oil, the presence of phenols, methyl phenols, and methoxy phenols was highlighted; these compounds were present in greater quantities in the treatments with KF. It is concluded that combining the briquetting and pyrolysis processes produces both energy and economic benefits because it is possible to transport lighter loads with the same amount of energy per volume. Under the briquetting conditions adopted in this study, the addition of KF as a binder is necessary because this results in briquettes with better physical, energy and mechanical properties.

Valorization of Different Fractions from Butiá Pomace by Pyrolysis: H2 Generation and Use of the Biochars for CO2 Capture

This work valorizes butiá pomace (Butia capitata) using pyrolysis to prepare CO2 adsorbents. Different fractions of the pomace, like fibers, endocarps, almonds, and deoiled almonds, were characterized and later pyrolyzed at 700 °C. Gas, bio-oil, and biochar fractions were collected and characterized. The results revealed that biochar, bio-oil, and gas yields depended on the type of pomace fraction (fibers, endocarps, almonds, and deoiled almonds). The higher biochar yield was obtained by endocarps (31.9%wt.). Furthermore, the gas fraction generated at 700 °C presented an H2 content higher than 80%vol regardless of the butiá fraction used as raw material. The biochars presented specific surface areas reaching 220.4 m2 g-1. Additionally, the endocarp-derived biochar presented a CO2 adsorption capacity of 66.43 mg g-1 at 25 °C and 1 bar, showing that this material could be an effective adsorbent to capture this greenhouse gas. Moreover, this capacity was maintained for 5 cycles. Biochars produced from butiá precursors without activation resulted in a higher surface area and better performance than some activated carbons reported in the literature. The results highlighted that pyrolysis could provide a green solution for butiá agro-industrial wastes, generating H2 and an adsorbent for CO2.

Hydrogen-Rich Syngas and Biochar Production by Non-Catalytic Valorization of Date Palm Seeds

Pyrolysis has been demonstrated to be a highly effective thermochemical process for converting complex biomaterials into biochar and syngas rich in hydrogen. The pyrolysis of mixed date palm seeds from Saudi Arabia was conducted using a fixed-bed pyrolyzer that was custom made for the purpose. The influence of the pyrolysis temperature (200–1000 °C) on the various physicochemical parameters of the date seed biochar generated through the pyrolysis process and the hydrogen-rich syngas was investigated. Proximate and ultimate analyses indicated a high carbon content in the lignocellulosic constituents such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Using energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, it was discovered that the elemental composition of biochar changes with the pyrolysis temperature. The date seeds pyrolyzed at 800 °C were found to have the maximum carbon concentration, with 97.99% of the total carbon content. The analysis of the biochar indicated a high concentration of carbon, as well as magnesium and potassium. There was a potential for the production of hydrogen-rich syngas, which increased with the pyrolysis temperature. At 1000 °C, the highest hydrogen and carbon monoxide compositions of 40 mol% and 32 mol%, respectively, were obtained. The kinetic data of the date seed pyrolysis were fitted using linearized model-free methods, such as Friedman, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS), as well as non-linear methods such as Vyazovkin and advanced Vyazovkin. The activation energies obtained from Friedman, FWO, and KAS varied in the range of 30–75 kJ/mol, 30–65 kJ/mol, and 30–40 kJ/mol, respectively, while those of Vyazovkin and advanced Vyazovkin were found in the range of 25–30 kJ/mol, and 30–70 kJ/mol, respectively. The analysis showed that the FWO and KAS models show smaller variation compared to Friedman.

Briquettes of acai seeds: characterization of the biomass and influence of the parameters of production temperature and pressure in the physical-mechanical and energy quality

Agro-industries, leveraged by the high demand of acai products, promote environmental impact through the generation of wastes in several locals in Amazon. The use with bioenergetic purposes has capacity to mitigate these scenario. Thus, the aim of the study was to characterize the biomass of acai seeds and establish the technical parameters of temperature and pressure of work to the production of briquettes of physical, mechanical and thermal quality. Temperatures of 120, 140 and 160 °C; and pressures of 15, 20 and 25 MPa were studied. We analyzed the briquettes mechanical compressive strength, rate of water absorption, rate of volumetric expansion and energy and apparent density. To the characterization of in natura seeds, the proximate analysis, chemical composition (extractives, holocellulose and lignin contents), higher, lower and useful heating value were determined. The proximate analysis indicated biomass thermal resistance, potential to direct burning and conversion by thermochemical processes. The lignin content may increase briquettes compressive strength produced in high temperatures. It was observed that the temperature had more influence in the evaluated briquettes characteristics than the pressure. The compressive strength was greater in 160 °C and 15 MPa briquettes, indicating that the lignin works as binder in this temperature, however, with pressure improvement the resistance is not favored due to the limit of resistance to compaction. The rate of water absorption decreased with the pressure increase and the temperature statistically affected in 140 °C briquettes. We observed volumetric expansion values in consonance to other found in dense biofuels of the literature. Further, the apparent density and energy density were favored by pressure improvement and the temperature helped in the increase of the apparent density. Moreover, the produced briquettes presented gain in the apparent density regarding the in natura biomass and had energy density comparable to coal and adequate to co-firing in boilers.

Synergistic Effects on the Co-pyrolysis of Agricultural Wastes and Sewage Sludge at Various Ratios

This study investigated the co-pyrolysis of blends of sewage sludge (SS) with rice husk (RH) and with hemp straw (HS) at different ratios by using thermogravimetry (TG) and its rate (DTG, derivative TG) analysis at heating rates of 10, 20, and 30 K/min. The resulting kinetic parameters of activation energy (E _a) were calculated by both Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose models, followed by comparison of experimental values with calculated values to reveal the synergistic effects of SS/RH and SS/HS. With increasing additions of RH or HS to SS, a gradual decreasing trend in the experimental pyrolysis temperature range was evident, ranging from 144.5 to 95.2 °C for SS/RH and from 144.5 to 88.8 °C for SS/RH. Moreover, such temperature ranges were 6.7-20.4 °C less than the calculated values at the same blending ratio. The fitting results of the two kinetic models showed that with the same SS mass ratio, the experimental E _a ^* (average activation energy) of both SS/RH and SS/HS were less than the calculated E _a ^*. Especially, the experimental E _a ^* of 7SS-3RH was lower around 43.8% than the calculated E _a ^*, whereas the experimental E _a ^* of 3SS-7HS was lower by about 39.4% than the calculated E _a ^*. Synergistic analysis demonstrated that the co-pyrolysis of RH or HS with SS at various mass ratios presented obvious synergistic effects and then the decrease of E _a. The mechanism experiment showed that the co-pyrolysis of SS/HS may promote the decrease of E _a by changing the co-pyrolysis gas products or by increasing the overflow of volatile matter and then forming intermediate transition products, while SS/RH may accelerate the decrease of the E _a by using an appropriate K addition ratio from RH as a metal catalyst.

Kinetic and thermodynamic study of finger millet straw pyrolysis through thermogravimetric analysis

Pyrolysis kinetics of finger millet straw (FMS) was studied using a thermogravimetric analyzer under N₂ environment. Physico-chemical characteristics of FMS were comparable with the established pyrolysis feedstocks. FMS thermally decomposed in three stages: drying, active pyrolysis, and char formation resulting in 70.37% overall weight loss. Average activation energy determined by Friedman and Starink methods was 177.80 and 172.18 kJ mol^-1, respectively. Frequency factor was found to be in the range of 10⁸ to 10²⁹. Reaction pathway followed diffusion, nucleation, and order-based mechanisms. The pyrolysis of FMS was characterized by empirical modeling and predicted well with model adequacy of 97.55%. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔG and ΔH) revealed the non-spontaneous and endothermic nature of FMS pyrolysis. The biochar obtained at multiple heating rates were characterized for its physicochemical, functional, and morphological characteristics. The kinetic and thermodynamic analyses illustrate the feasibility of exploiting finger millet straw as a pyrolysis feedstock to derive biofuels.

Pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics analysis of oil sludge with CaO additive

In the process of exploitation, transportation and refining of high-sulfur crude oil, a large number of oil sludge (OS) with high sulfur content is produced. Pyrolysis has been proved to be an effective method for OS disposal, but for solid waste with high sulfur content, lots of sulfur-containing gases will be released during thermal disposal. The addition of calcium oxide in pyrolysis process is an economical and effective way to capture sulfur-containing gases. In order to understand the pyrolysis process of OS with CaO, a thermogravimetric analyser was used to conduct pyrolysis experiments of OS with different Ca/S molar ratios (0, 1, 2 and 3) at different heating rates (10°C/min, 20°C/min, 30°C/min and 40°C/min). The results showed that with the increase of CaO addition the derivative thermogravimetric curves showed a gentle trend. In addition, new weight loss peaks were occurred at 700-900°C and after 1100°C, which were the decomposition of calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate, respectively. The kinetic parameters were solved by Friedman, FWO, and Starink methods, and the results were similar, with an average activation energies (E) value of 214 kJ/mol. The change trend of the activation energy was followed by an increase and then a decrease corresponding to the change of energy demand for the reaction. The calculated average values of ΔH, ΔG and ΔS were about 207, 447 and -0.3250 kJ/mol, respectively. When the conversion rate was 0.5, the thermodynamic parameters reached their maximum values.

Valorization of Rice Straw via Hydrotropic Lignin Extraction and Its Characterization

Rice straw hydrotropic lignin was extracted from p-Toluene sulfonic acid (p-TsOH) fractionation with a different combined delignification factor (CDF). Hydrotropic lignin characterization was systematically investigated, and alkaline lignin was also studied for the contrast. Results showed that the hydrotropic rice straw lignin particle was in nanometer scopes. Compared with alkaline lignin, the hydrotropic lignin had greater molecular weight. NMR analysis showed that β-aryl ether linkage was well preserved at low severities, and the unsaturation in the side chain of hydrotropic lignin was high. H units and G units were preferentially degraded and subsequently condensed at high severity. High severity also resulted in the cleavage of part β-aryl ether linkage. ³¹P-NMR showed the decrease in aliphatic hydroxyl groups and the increasing carboxyl group content at high severity. The maximum weight loss temperature of the hydrotropic lignin was in the range of 330–350 °C, higher than the alkaline lignin, and the glass conversion temperature (T_g) of the hydrotropic lignin was in the range of 107–125 °C, lower than that of the alkaline lignin. The hydrotropic lignin has high β-aryl ether linkage content, high activity, nanoscale particle size, and low T_g, which is beneficial for its further valorization.

Apparent Pyrolysis Kinetics and Index-Based Assessment of Pretreated Peach Seeds

To better understand pyrolysis for upscaling purposes, a kinetic characterization of the process is necessary for every feedstock. Laboratory experiments allow identification of apparent kinetic models. This paper aims at the apparent kinetic investigation of peach seeds’ slow pyrolysis. Peach seeds from Greek peach fruits pyrolyzed under inert atmospheric conditions at different temperatures (475–785 °C), heating rates (100–250 °C/min) and N2 flow rates (25–200 cc/min). Prior to pyrolysis, they submitted to hexane extraction for the recovery of 36.8% wt. of the contained oils. Determination of the specific rate constant (k) and activation energy (Ea) for each considered reaction was made by using the Coats–Redfern integral non-isothermal fitting model that requires an assumption of the reaction order (n). Results revealed that a 3rd order reaction model best fits the process, the increasing of the pyrolysis temperature leads to a decrease of the activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (A), while nitrogen flow rate and heating rate had an opposite impact. E and A values ranged from 23 to 56 kJ/mol and 1.82 × 106 to 1.13 × 106 min−1, respectively, at different pyrolysis conditions. Furthermore, estimation of combustion and pyrolysis indexes were made to assess the suitability of peach seeds as a fuel, using isothermal thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). Results revealed that peach seeds are a suitable feedstock for pyrolysis, while prior submission of peach seeds to oils extraction, in a cascade biorefinery approach, can increase the energy and material recovery efficiency and potentially the environmental and economic benefit of the agri-food industrial sector.

Thermogravimetric Analysis of Solid Biofuels with Additive under Air Atmosphere

The paper presents the combustion profile of selected fuels as a result of thermogravimetric analysis. The main purpose of this study was to investigate a mixture of different types of fuel and the influence of the use of a fuel additive on the combustion process profile. As a fuel additive, halloysite was used to investigate the thermogravimetric profiles. It was confirmed that the main combustion parameters such as ignition temperature, burnout temperature, and maximum peak temperature correlated accordingly with different combustibility indices such as the ignition index, the burnout index, and the combustion indices. Furthermore, the present study provided a comparison of selected methods for analyzing non-isothermal solid-state kinetic data and investigated the kinetics of thermal decomposition to describe the ongoing process. Two non-isothermal model methods (Kissinger and Ozawa) were used to calculate the Arrhenius parameters. The effect of heating rate and the addition of halloysite as a fuel additive on decomposition were studied.

Investigation of pyrolysis kinetics parameters and thermal behavior of thermochemically modified bagasse for bioenergy potential

Biomass is considering a source of organic carbon, which can replace fossil resources by using pyrolysis process, therefore an efficient biomass thermal modification technology has been target of so much research. The objective of this work is to study the potential energy of sugarcane bagasse and thermochemically modified bagasse for bioenergy potential for use in heat generation and energy. The thermal analysis was conducted by powder-shaped exposure of the three study samples (SB, AC-1, and AC-2) at three heating rates of (5, 7.5 and 10 °C min−1), it was possible to identify three stages of thermal degradation and study some thermochemical reactions, using two iso-conversional models, Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS) and Ozawa–Flynn–Wall (OFW) to calculate some kinetic parameters, such as activation energy (Ea) and pre-exponential factor (A). First step was about the devolatilization of volatile matter, moisture, and other substances. Degradation of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin were shown in a second step. Characterization analyzes, such as SEM–EDX and textural parameters of the samples, show the presence of carbon in samples SB and AC-1. Due to SEM analyzes, morphological differences between the samples are showing as AC-1 and AC-2 samples present a rougher shape with pores, on the other hand, SB sample show a fibrous shape. In conclusion, sugarcane bagasse and thermochemically modified bagasse, show very promising results, for future studies, such as for bioenergy potential.
