Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to evaluate the vestibular system of children who had undergone cochlear implant surgery and to compare them with the healthy population by vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gains in unilateral and bilateral implant users, with the implants both on and off. METHODS Patients older than 5 years who had undergone cochlear implant surgery between 2012 and 2020 and who were cochlear implant users for at least one year were included. After consent was obtained, a video head impulse test (VHIT) was performed to evaluate the three semicircular canals, with devices on and off, and VOR gains were evaluated. VHIT was also used to assess VOR gains in the control group. The VOR gains of the study and control groups, VOR gains of unilateral and bilateral implant users, and VOR gains with implants on and off were compared. RESULTS When the VOR gains of 24 unilateral and 13 bilateral cochlear implant users and the control group (n = 30) were compared, a significant difference was found only in the anterior semicircular canal, although the VOR gains were found to be low in all three semicircular canals in the implant users (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the VOR gains of unilateral and bilateral implant users. There was no significant difference between the VOR gains when either on or off. There was no correlation between cochlear implant usage time, implant insertion age, patient age and VOR gain. CONCLUSION The effects of cochlear implant surgery on the vestibular system continue in the late period, but no correlation was observed between implant usage time and VOR gain after the first year. It was observed that having the cochlear implant on or off had no effect on VOR gain. Furthermore, bilateral implant surgery did not lead to additional vestibular dysfunction compared to unilateral implant surgery.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aims to assess the benefit of sequential bilateral cochlear implantation in children with congenital bilateral profound hearing loss, submitted to the first implant at an early age. METHODS We enrolled all the bilateral sequential cochlear implanted children who received the first implant within 48 months and the second within 12 years of age at our Institution. The children were submitted to disyllabic word recognition tests and Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) assessment using the OLSA matrix sentence test with the first implanted device (CI1), with the second implanted device (CI2), and with both devices (CIbil). Furthermore, we measured the datalogging of both devices. Then we calculated the binaural SRT gain (b-SRTgain) and checked the correlations between speech perception results and the b-SRTgain with the child's age at CI1 and CI2, DELTA and the datalogging reports. RESULTS With the bilateral electric stimulation, we found a significant improvement in disyllabic word recognition scores and in SRT. Moreover, the datalogging showed no significant differences in the time of use of CI1 and CI2. We found significant negative correlations between speech perception abilities with CI2 and age at CI2 and DELTA, and between the SRT with CI1 and the b-SRTgain. CONCLUSIONS From this study we can conclude that in a sequential CI procedure, even if a short inter-implant delay and lower ages at the second surgery can lead to better speech perception with CI2, children can benefit from bilateral stimulation independently of age at the second surgery and the DELTA.

Abstract
AbstractObjectiveTo study the effectiveness of unilateral cochlear implantation, binaural-bimodal hearing devices, and bilateral cochlear implantation in children with inner-ear malformation.MethodsThis study comprised 261 patients who were allocated to inner-ear malformation or control groups. Twenty-four months after surgery, aided sound-field thresholds were tested, and the Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale, Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale, Meaningful Use of Speech Scale, Categories of Auditory Performance scale and Speech Intelligibility Rating test were completed.ResultsAided sound-field thresholds were significantly better for bilateral cochlear implantation patients than for unilateral cochlear implantation or binaural-bimodal hearing device patients. There was no significant difference in Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale, Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale, or Categories of Auditory Performance scores among the three groups. The binaural-bimodal hearing device patients outperformed unilateral cochlear implantation patients on both Meaningful Use of Speech Scale and Speech Intelligibility Rating scores. No statistical difference was observed between the two subgroups.ConclusionChildren who received bilateral cochlear implants have the best auditory awareness in a quiet environment. Children with binaural-bimodal hearing devices have better voice control and verbal skills than unilateral cochlear implantation patients, and people are more likely to understand them. Children with inner-ear malformations benefit from cochlear implantation.

Abstract
There is a tendency for children undergoing sequential cochlear implant after a long period of unilateral implant use to have a smaller dynamic range in their second implant compared to their first implant. This study aimed to investigate if balancing the dynamic ranges between the two implants influenced functional outcomes in sequentially implanted children. Nineteen participants with long inter-implant time delays were randomly assigned to a study group or a control group. Children in the study group received progressive minimal changes to both first and second implants over a period of nine months to achieve balanced dynamic ranges, while the children in the control group received only changes to their sequential implant. Functional outcomes were collected 24-months after sequential implantation and consisted of speech discrimination scores, spatial localisation, device use and quality of life measures. Results show that spatial discrimination skills improved over time for both groups of children; however children in the study group had smaller localisation errors compared with the children in the control group. No other differences between the two groups were observed. Balanced dynamic ranges in sequentially implanted children can contribute to better performance, particularly in spatial discrimination tasks that rely in inter-aural level differences.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide a scoping review of the available literature for determining objectively the effect of cochlear implantation on vestibular function in children. METHODS A literature search was performed and the following criteria were applied: vestibular tests that were performed on subjects within the range of 0-18 years old before and after cochlear implantation. The papers conducted at least one of the following tests: (video) head impulse test, caloric test, cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials or rotatory chair test. Included papers underwent quality assessment and this was graded by risk of bias and directness of evidence. RESULTS Fourteen articles met the selection criteria. The included studies showed that cochlear implantation leads to a decrease in vestibular function in a proportion of the patient population. This loss of vestibular function can be permanent, but (partial) restoration over the course of months to years is possible. The pooling of data determined that the articles varied on multiple factors, such as time of testing pre- and post-operatively, age of implantation, etiologies of hearing loss, used surgical techniques, type of implants and the applied protocols to determine altered responses within vestibular tests. The overall quality of the included literature was deemed as high risk of bias and medium to low level of directness of evidence. Therefore, the data was considered not feasible for systematic analysis. CONCLUSION This review implicates that vestibular function is either unaffected or shows short-term or permanent deterioration after cochlear implantation in children. However, the heterogeneity of the available literature indicates the importance of standardized testing to improve our knowledge of the effect of cochlear implantation on the vestibular function and subsequent developmental consequences for the concerned children.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to explore: 1) the average use of each device in sequentially implanted cochlear implants; 2) whether the inter-implant duration between implants produced any significant difference in the average use of the second implant; and 3) whether wearing hearing aids before the implantation of the second cochlear implant affects its average use. Materials and methods The study included 20 participants with bilateral Nucleus 24 implants (Cochlear Corporation, Lone Tree, CO). Data regarding various variables were extracted and then analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics for Mac, version 23 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results The pediatric group included 14 subjects (average age 7.5 years) while the adult group comprised six subjects (average age 37.5 years). The average use of the second device was 0.9 hours per day more than the first in the pediatric group while it was 1.22 hours per day more in the adult group. We also divided the subjects on the basis of duration between the first and second devices and calculated the average use of each device by them. There was no significant difference (p>0.05). The average use by subjects who did and did not use hearing aids before implantation was also insignificant (p>0.05). Conclusions No significant difference between the average use of the first and second implants, between the inter-implant duration of the first and second implants, the average use of the second implant, and between using hearing aids before the implantation of the second device and the average use was observed.

Abstract
PURPOSES The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a difference in phoneme recognition and school-age language skills in children with bilateral and unilateral cochlear implants (CI). The second aim of the study is to examine language-based skills in bilateral cochlear implanted children with the first implant, second implant and in the bilateral listening situations. METHOD 60 to 108-month-old children with similar demographic and audiological features were included. Of the 64 participants in total, 30 are bilateral cochlear implant users and 34 of them use unilateral cochlear implants. Turkish version of "Test of Language Development-Primary: Fourth edition (TOLD-P:4)" and "Phoneme Recognition Test (PRT)" were implemented for the evaluation of the language sub-components skills and auditory perception. In addition, the PRT test audio file was presented directly to the implant with connection cables via the fitting program methodologically. RESULTS Children with bilateral cochlear implants were more successful in all language-based skills than children with unilateral cochlear implants (p < 0.05). In the PRT test, the most successful scores were obtained in the bilateral listening conditions, the second with the experienced implant side, and the most unsuccessful scores in the listening conditions with second implant. CONCLUSION Bilateral cochlear implants are very useful in terms of language-based skills in children with severe/profound hearing loss. This can positively affect even the future academic and social skills of children.
