Abstract
Objectives. This study aimed to investigate the effects of separate and concurrent exposure to occupational noise and hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) on auditory and cognitive attention. Methods. The experimental study was conducted with 40 construction workers who were exposed to noise (A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level of 90 dB) and to HTV (10 m/s2 at 31.5 Hz), and concurrent exposure to both for 30 min under simulated work with vibrating equipment used in construction. Cognitive performance aspects were then evaluated from each individual in two pre-exposure and post-exposure settings for each session. Results. The effect sizes of concurrent exposure (HTV + noise) and separate exposure to noise on auditory attention were very close (effect size = 0.648 and 0.626). The largest changes in the difference of response time in both types of attention (selective and divided attention) were related to the concurrent exposure scenario and then exposure to HTV, respectively. The highest effects for the correct response of selective and divided attention are related to concurrent exposure (HTV + noise) and then noise exposure, respectively. Conclusion. The HTV effect during concurrent exposure is hidden in auditory attention, and noise has the main effects. The divided attention was more affected than the selective attention in the different scenarios.

Abstract
PURPOSE Tinnitus is a condition that causes people to hear sounds without an external source. One significant issue arising from this condition is the difficulty in communicating, especially in the presence of noisy backgrounds. The process of understanding speech in challenging situations requires both cognitive and auditory abilities. Since tinnitus presents unique challenges, it is important to investigate how it affects speech perception in noise. METHOD In this review, 32 articles were investigated to determine the effect of tinnitus on the effect of speech in noise perception performance. Based on the meta-analysis performed using a random-effects model, meta-regression was used to explore the moderating effects of age and hearing acuity. RESULTS A total of 32 studies were reviewed, and the results of the meta-analysis revealed that tinnitus significantly impacts speech in terms of noise perception performance. Additionally, the regression analysis revealed that age and hearing acuity are not significant predictors of speech in noise perception. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that tinnitus affects speech perception in noisy environments due to cognitive impairments and central auditory processing deficits. Hearing loss and aging also contribute to reduced speech in noise performance. Interventions and further research are necessary to address individual challenges associated with continuous subjective tinnitus.

Abstract
Attention is a fundamental aspect of human cognitive function and is crucial for essential activities such as learning, social interaction, and routine tasks. Notably, Auditory attention involves complex interactions and collaboration among multiple brain networks. Recognizing the impairment of auditory attention, comprehending its underlying mechanisms, and identifying the activated brain regions essential for the development of treatments and interventions for individuals facing auditory attention deficits, emphasizes the significance of investigating these matters. In the current study, we conducted a review by searching for the full text of 53 articles published related to auditory attention, mechanisms, and networks in databases like Science Direct, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and PubMed using the keywords Attention, Auditory Attention, Auditory Attention Impairment, theories of attention were investigated in the years 2000 to 2023 And focused on articles that provided discussions within this research domain. The studies have demonstrated that auditory attention exceeds being an acoustic attribute and assumes a fundamental role in complex acoustic environments, information processing, and even speech comprehension. In the context of this study, we have conducted a review and summary of the proposed theories related to attention and the brain networks involved in different forms of auditory attention. In conclusion, the integration of auditory attention assessments, behavioral observations, and an understanding of the neural mechanisms and brain regions implicated in auditory attention proves to be an effective approach for the diagnosis and treatment of attention-related disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our study aimed to verify the evidence of auditory training employed in the audiological treatment of tinnitus in adults and older adults. METHODS Scoping review based on a search for articles in journals available in MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase (Elsevier), LILACS (BVS), and Cochrane Library. Titles and abstracts of the retrieved articles were assessed by peers, following the eligibility criteria; they were afterward read in full text, and the references were hand searched in the results found. Studies' level of evidence was classified into very high (Level A+), high (Level A), moderate (Level B), limited (Level C), low (Level D), or very low (Level D-) based on the Critically Appraised Topics. RESULTS 2160 records were identified in the searching stage and 15 studies were eligible for data extraction. Study design, sample characterization, auditory training tasks, sound stimuli, outcome measures, and results were extracted. Frequency discrimination training was the most frequent strategy, followed by auditory attentional skills training and multisensory training. Almost all studies with daily auditory training sessions reported significant benefits demonstrated in at least one outcome measure. Studies that used auditory discrimination training and attentional auditory skill stimulation to treat tinnitus obtained quality evidence levels ranging from limited to high (C‒A) and studies that applied multisensory training or attentional training combined with counseling and passive listening in tinnitus patients reached a high-quality evidence level (A). CONCLUSION Recent studies had higher levels of evidence and considered attentional factors and multisensory pathways in auditory training strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current study investigates evidence of hypothesized reduced central inhibition and/or increased excitation in individuals with tinnitus by evaluating cortical auditory onset versus offset responses. METHODS Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) were recorded to the onset and offset of 3-second white noise stimuli in tinnitus and control groups matched in pairs by age, hearing, and sex (n = 26 total). Independent t-tests and 2-way mixed model ANOVA were used to evaluate onset-offset differences in amplitude, area, and latency of CAEP components by group. The predictive influence of tinnitus presence and associated participant characteristics on CAEP outcomes was assessed by multiple regression proportional reduction in error. RESULTS The tinnitus group had significantly larger onset minus offset P2 amplitudes (ΔP2 amplitudes) than control group participants. No other component variables differed significantly. ΔP2 amplitude was best predicted by tinnitus status and not significantly influenced by other variables such as hearing loss or age. CONCLUSIONS Hypothesized reduced central inhibition and/or increased excitation in tinnitus participants was partially supported by a group difference in ΔP2 amplitude. SIGNIFICANCE This was the first study to evaluate CAEP onset minus offset differences to investigate changes in central excitation/inhibition in individuals with tinnitus versus controls in matched groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tinnitus can result from auditory system reorganization due to neural activity dysfunctions. Auditory stimulation can cause temporary or persistent tinnitus alleviation by altering the neural generators. The present study investigated the changes in Late-Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (LLAEPs) after tinnitus suppression using auditory stimulation with short-term Residual Inhibition (RI) and long-term Tinnitus Masker (TM). METHODS The study included 40 participates with equal numbers in the Tinnitus Group (TG), including the chronic tinnitus subjects, and the Control Group (CG), including matched volunteers. The participants had normal hearing in conventional audiometry. All the participants underwent LLAEP recording pre-intervention and after a one-minute auditory stimulation (RI), as well as a pre-intervention Dichotic Digit Test (DDT) as a behavioral assessment of the selective attention. Moreover, TG underwent a 3-month course of TM, a third LLAEP recording post-TM, a second DDT post-TM, and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) before and after the TM. RESULTS In the baseline LLAEP recording, the TG had significantly later N1, P3a, and P3b latencies, as well as significantly lower P3a and P3b amplitudes. The second LLAEP recording showed a significant intragroup increase in P3a amplitude and a significant decrease in P3a latency in the TG, while no significant intragroup difference was observed in the CG. In the third LLAEP recording performed on TG, the P3a amplitude and latency had significant changes compared to the second recording, while the N1 latency was significantly decreased. Moreover, the DDT and THI scores had significant improvement after the TM in TG. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed the neurophysiological changes after short-term (RI) and long-term (TM) auditory stimulations in tinnitus subjects. The LLAEP changes suggest that these interventions lead to tinnitus suppression through common mechanisms. The electrophysiological observation was also confirmed using behavioral assessments. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE This study type is a "comparative study" with the level of evidence "3".

Abstract
Purpose:
Previous studies have demonstrated that people with tinnitus show attention dysfunctions. In this study, we investigated the influence of tinnitus on attention orienting, especially whether the ability of attention orienting could be modulated by the degree of tinnitus.
Method:
Fifty-nine and 54 unilateral tinnitus participants were included in Experiment 1 and Experiment 2, respectively. All participants reported subjective tinnitus for at least 3 months and were divided into a mild tinnitus group (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory [THI] < 37) or a moderate to severe tinnitus group (THI ≥ 37) according to the THI score. An auditory exogenous attention task and an auditory endogenous attention task were adopted. In the exogenous task, a target sound following a cue sound was presented on either the left or right side. Participants were required to discriminate whether the target was pure tone or white noise. In the endogenous task, participants were required to pay attention to the stimuli on one side and judge the pitch of a target sound. Mixed-design analyses of variance were conducted for the mean reaction times and accuracy across the experimental conditions.
Results:
Our results showed that in the endogenous attention task, compared with the mild tinnitus group, moderate to severe tinnitus participants had better performance for stimuli presented on the tinnitus side but not on the nontinnitus side. In contrast, in the exogenous attention task, no differences were found between mild and moderate to severe tinnitus groups.
Conclusion:
The results suggest that the degree of tinnitus influences the performance of auditory endogenous attention but not auditory exogenous attention orienting.

Abstract
Background Attention and habituation are two domains known to play key roles in the perception and maintenance of tinnitus. The heterogeneous nature of tinnitus and the methodologies adopted by various studies make it difficult to generalize findings. The current review aims at assessing and synthesizing evidence on the possible roles of attention and habituation in continuous subjective tinnitus. Methodology The literature search included five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences, CINAHL and ProQuest) that resulted in 1,293 articles, published by July 2019. Studies on attention and/or habituation in individuals with tinnitus using either behavioural or electrophysiological tests were included in the review after a quality assessment. Results Seventeen studies on attention in tinnitus were included in the narrative synthesis. Two meta-analyses were performed to assess the role of attention in tinnitus using a behavioural methodology (z = 4.06; p < 0.0001) and P300 amplitude (z = 2.70; p = 0.007) with 531 participants. With respect to habituation, the review indicates the lack of quality articles for habituation inclusion in the narrative synthesis. Conclusions The review highlights that selective domains of attention were consistently impaired in individuals with tinnitus. Habituation, on the other hand, needs further exploration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between tinnitus parameters (duration, severity, reaction, handicap levels) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain values in patients with tinnitus with normal hearing without vertigo or any other complaints and to compare the VOR gains with a healthy group. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study group consisted of 30 individuals aged between 18 and 65 years who suffered from tinnitus but not from hearing loss and vertigo. The control group also consisted of 30 individuals who were categorized as healthy adults. The tinnitus handicap inventory, tinnitus reaction questionnaire, and tinnitus handicap questionnaire were applied to each individual in the tinnitus group, and the video head impulse test (VHIT) was conducted in 2 groups. RESULTS Statistically, a significant difference was found between the 2 groups in terms of VOR gain values in horizontal and vertical semicircular canal planes (p<0.05). However, there was no statistically significant correlation between tinnitus parameters, age, and VOR gain values in the study group (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Considering the lower VOR gain values of the study group than the control group, these patients may need to be followed up for vestibular dysfunction associated with tinnitus, which can be a symptom of peripheral vestibular disorder. Abstract
In the present study, we used an innovative music-rest interleaved fMRI paradigm to investigate the neural correlates of tinnitus distress. Tinnitus is a poorly-understood hearing disorder where individuals perceive sounds, in the absence of an external source. Although the great majority of individuals habituate to chronic tinnitus and report few symptoms, a minority report debilitating distress and annoyance. Prior research suggests that a diverse set of brain regions, including the attention, the salience, and the limbic networks, play key roles in mediating both the perception of tinnitus and its impact on the individual; however, evidence of the degree and extent of their involvement has been inconsistent. Here, we minimally modified the conventional resting state fMRI by interleaving it with segments of jazz music. We found that the functional connectivity between a set of brain regions-including cerebellum, precuneus, superior/middle frontal gyrus, and primary visual cortex-and seeds in the dorsal attention network, the salience network, and the amygdala, were effective in fractionating the tinnitus patients into two subgroups, characterized by the severity of tinnitus-related distress. Further, our findings revealed cross-modal modulation of the attention and salience networks by the visual modality during the music segments. On average, the more bothersome the reported tinnitus, the stronger was the exhibited inter-network functional connectivity. This study substantiates the essential role of the attention, salience, and limbic networks in tinnitus habituation, and suggests modulation of the attention and salience networks across the auditory and visual modalities as a possible compensatory mechanism for bothersome tinnitus.

Abstract
Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding external sound source, and bothersome tinnitus has been linked to poorer cognitive performance. This review comprehensively quantifies the association between tinnitus and different domains of cognitive performance. The review protocol was preregistered and published in a peer-reviewed journal. The review and analyses were reported according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis guidelines. Peer-reviewed literature was searched using electronic databases to find studies featuring participants with tinnitus who had undertaken measures of cognitive performance. Studies were assessed for quality and categorized according to an established cognitive framework. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed on various cognitive domains with potential moderator variables assessed where possible. Thirty-eight records were included in the analysis from a total of 1,863 participants. Analyses showed that tinnitus is associated with poorer executive function, processing speed, general short-term memory, and general learning and retrieval. Narrow cognitive domains of Inhibition and Shifting (within executive function) and learning and retrieval (within general learning and retrieval) were also associated with tinnitus.

Abstract
Introduction
The Sustained Auditory Attention Ability Test (SAAAT) is an instrument used to assess sustained auditory attention in children. Difficulties related to this ability are not unique to children alone, as adults have been observed to present with the same deficits. Therefore, there is a need to adapt instruments like the SAAAT and provide reference values for adults.
Objective
To assess adult performance on the SAAAT.
Methods
Approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee under n° 034/2011. The sample consisted of 30 participants aged between 18 and 30 years old (average age = 24.2 years old), female and male. The inclusion criteria were: peripheral hearing within normal limits, type A tympanometric curve, and no attention-related complaints. The participants were submitted to Tonal Audiometry, Logoaudiometry, Immitanciometry and to the SAAAT.
Results
The following mean values and standard deviations (SD) were observed: inattention = 1.7 (SD = 2.2) and impulsivity = 0.8 (SD = 0.9) error types. For the SAAAT, the mean value for the total error score was 2.4 (SD = 2.6), and for the decrease in vigilance, it was 0.3 (SD = 0.5). When comparing the performance of adults and children, a statistically significant difference was observed for inattention (

= 0.000) and impulsivity (

= 0.001) error types, as well as in the total error score (
p
= 0.000) and in decreased vigilance (

= 0.0003).
Conclusion
The performance of adults in the SAAAT differed from the children's parameters, since adults showed lower scores in all variables of the instrument.
