Abstract
Despite the existence of several studies about the scapula’s position and motion, in shoulder pain conditions, there are still conflicting findings regarding scapular adaptations and reduced research about the scapula’s role during functional tasks. The present study aimed to compare scapular-related kinematic and electromyographic outcomes during different shoulder movements (with and without load) and the drinking task, between symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects. Forty subjects (divided into two groups) participated in this cross-sectional observational study. Scapulothoracic motion, scapulohumeral rhythm, and movement quality (considering trunk compensation, time-to-peak acceleration, and smoothness), as well as the relative surface electromyographic activity and muscle ratio considering the trapezius, serratus anterior, and levator scapulae (LS), were assessed. The symptomatic group presented the following: (1) changes in scapular upward rotation (p = 0.008) and winging (p = 0.026 and p = 0.005) during backward transport and drink phases; (2) increased muscle activity level of the middle trapezius (MT) in all tasks (p < 0.0001 to p = 0.039), of LS during shoulder elevation with load (p = 0.007), and of LS and LT during most of the drinking task phases (p = 0.007 to p = 0.043 and p < 0.0001 to p = 0.014, respectively); (3) a decreased serratus anterior lower portion activity level (SAlow) during shoulder lowering with load (p = 0.030) and drink phase (p = 0.047); and (4) an increased muscular ratio between scapular abductors/adductors (p = 0.005 to p = 0.036) and elevators/depressors (p = 0.008 to p = 0.028). Compared to asymptomatic subjects, subjects with chronic shoulder pain presented scapular upward rotation and winging adaptations; increased activity levels of MT, LT, and LS; decreased activity levels of SAlow; and increased scapular muscle ratios.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate whether scapular movement training (SMT) is superior to standardized exercises in improving scapular biomechanics, behavioral, and clinical aspects of individuals with shoulder pain. METHODS AND METHODS A total of 64 individuals with chronic shoulder pain were randomly assigned to receive 16 sessions of SMT or SE over 8 weeks. Outcome measures included three-dimensional scapular kinematics, muscle activity of scapulothoracic muscles, pain, disability, fear-avoidance, kinesiophobia, and self-perceived changes. Kinematics and muscle activity were assessed at baseline and after treatment, and self-reported measurements at baseline, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. RESULTS SMT significantly (p < 0.05) decreased scapular internal rotation during arm elevation and lowering at sagittal and scapular planes (mean difference [MD]: ranged from 2.8 to 4.1°), and at lower angles of arm elevation and lowering at the frontal plane (MD: 3.4° and 2.4°, respectively), increased upper trapezius (UT) activity (MD: 10.3%) and decreased middle trapezius (MT) (MD: 60.4%) and serratus anterior (MD: 9.9%) activity during arm lowering compared to SE. Both groups significantly improved pain, disability, fear-avoidance, kinesiophobia, and self-perceived changes over 4 weeks, which was sustained over the remaining 8 weeks. CONCLUSIONS SMT is not superior to standardized exercises in improving scapular biomechanics, behavioral, and clinical aspects of individuals with shoulder pain. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT03528499Implications for rehabilitationScapular movement training (SMT) showed small and likely not clinically relevant changes in scapular kinematics and muscle activity compared to standardized exercises.SMT and standardized exercises presented similar improvements in pain, disability, fear-avoidance beliefs, kinesiophobia, and self-perceived change in health condition immediately following 4-weeks of treatment, which was sustained over the following 8 weeks.The changes in patient-reported outcome measures are unlikely to be associated with changes in scapular kinematics and electromyographic activity.Clinicians should consider other factors than scapular movement during the treatment of patients with shoulder pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Computer use is a well-known source of chronic pain, leading to absenteeism and reduced productivity and well-being. This study evaluated the feasibility of conducting a full-scale randomised controlled trial. Several methodological variables defined trial feasibility. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty adults, daily computer users reporting pain, were recruited. Data collection took place at LABIOMEP. Participants were randomised into 1 of 3 parallel groups and received either osteopathic, sham or no treatment. Only the volunteers were blind to group assignments. The primary objective was to study the feasibility and acceptability of the protocol. RESULTS Of 77 participants interested, 30 were included and randomised into three groups of ten. All participants concluded the study, and all the data was analysed. The feasibility outcomes were deemed appropriate. No adverse events or severe side effects were reported or identified. CONCLUSION Studying the efficacy of osteopathic consultation on computer users by conducting an RCT is feasible and safe. With adjustments, a full-scale study can be designed. Abstract
This study aimed to compare electromyographic response of the lower trapezius muscle during maximal voluntary isometric contractions under two conditions: overhead shoulder position versus scapular position, rating the pain after each condition. Twenty-six participants with shoulder pain (SP; n = 15; Shoulder Pain and Disability Index-Pain = 34 [range 6-66]) and without shoulder pain (nSP; n = 11; Shoulder Pain and Disability Index-Pain = 0 [range 0-14]) performed maximal voluntary isometric contractions in those 2 conditions while the lower trapezius was monitored using surface electromyography. Pain was rated using the visual analog scale. The nSP group experienced no pain, whereas the SP group reported pain in both conditions with higher pain during the overhead movement. No differences were observed for muscle excitation between conditions, but higher levels were observed for the nSP group compared with the SP group. The overhead condition was more painful for the SP group (visual analog scale: SP = 4 vs nSP = 1.09, P = .036). Scapular position showed the same levels of LT excitation than overhead position. The scapular position is preferable, compared with overhead positioning, to normalize the lower trapezius instead of overhead positioning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The available literature lacks data about the influence of whole body cryotherapy (WBC) on muscle activity in patients with sclerosis multiplex (MS). OBJECTIVE Assessment of the influence of the 20 WBC series on the surface electromyography (sEMG) signal and the relationship between it and the functional state in patients with MS. METHODS The study group was 114 of MS patients (aged 45.24±11.88yr.,) which 74 of them received 20 of WBC. An assessment was made of: the hand grip (HGS), Timed 25-Foot Walk, Fatigue Severity Scale, sEMG signal from the dominant limb. RESULTS After a series of 20 WBC: in the rest electromyograms, an increase of extensor carpi radialis (ECR) and a decrease of flexor carpi radialis (FCR) amplitude were demonstrated (non-normalized signal ECR p = 0.0001); significant differences in sEMG rest signals between ECR and FCR have decreased; for voluntary contraction in both assessed antagonistic muscle amplitude was significantly decreased (p = 0.0005; p = 0.0316, p = 0.0185); an increase of HGS (p < 0.001); gait improvement (p = 0.001); decrease fatigue (p = 0.024). No significant changes were observed in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Series of 20 WBC improves the functional state and reduces fatigue in patients with MS, which may be due to adaptive changes in bioelectrical muscle activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Scapular focused exercise interventions are frequently used to treat individuals with shoulder pain. However, evidence for changes in scapular motion after intervention is limited. OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of scapular movement training versus standardized exercises for individuals with shoulder pain. METHODS This will be a single-blinded randomized controlled trial. Sixty-four individuals with shoulder pain for at least 3 months, scapular dyskinesis, and a positive scapular assistance test will be randomly allocated to one of two groups: Scapular Movement Training (group 1) and Standardized Exercises (group 2). Group 1 will receive education about scapular position and movement, and be trained to modify the scapular movement pattern. Group 2 will perform stretching and strengthening exercises. Both groups will be treated twice a week for eight weeks. Three-dimensional scapular kinematics and muscle activity of the serratus anterior and upper, middle, and lower trapezius during elevation and lowering of the arm will be assessed at baseline and after 8 weeks of treatment. Pain intensity, function, fear avoidance beliefs, and kinesiophobia will be assessed at baseline and after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment, and 4 weeks after the end of treatment. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study may contribute to a better understanding of the efficacy of scapular focused treatments for individuals with shoulder pain. Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A case control study. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify the potential impact of cervical spine malalignment on muscle parameters. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Muscular factors are associated with cervical alignment. Nevertheless, only muscle dimensions or imaging changes have been evaluated, function of cervical muscles has scarcely been investigated. METHODS Thirty-four patients diagnosed as cervical spine degeneration associated with cervical malalignment and 32 control subjects were included in this case control study. Visual analogue scale (VAS) and the neck disability index (NDI) were used. The sagittal alignment parameters and cervical range of motion (ROM) were measured on cervical spine lateral radiographs, included C2-C7 lordosis, C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis (C2-C7 SVA), cervical gravity-sagittal vertical axis (CG-SVA), T1-Slope, and spinal canal angle (SCA). Surface electromyography (SEMG)-based flexion-relaxation ratio (FRR) was measured. RESULTS The result showed VAS score of the neck significantly lower in controls (P<0.05), C2-C7 lordosis, C2-C7 SVA, CG-SVA, T1-Slope and ROM showed significantly different (P<0.001) between malalignment group and control group, FRR of splenius capitis (FRRSpl) and upper trapezius (FRRUTr) of the malalignment group were lower than in the control group, which correlated well with NDI (rSpl = -0.181 rUTr = -0.275), FRRSpl correlated well with VAS (rSpl = -0.177). FRRSpl correlated strongly with C2-C7 SVA (r = 0.30), CG-SVA (r = 0.32), T1-Slope (r = 0.17), ROM (r = 0.19), FRRUTr correlated with C2-C7 lordosis (r = -0.23), CG-SVA (r = 0.19), T1-Slope (r = 0.28), ROM (r = 0.23). CONCLUSION Cervical malalignment patients had more tensional posterior cervical muscle and poor muscle functions. CG-SVA showed advantages in evaluating cervical malalignment.Level of Evidence: 3.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the reliability of different methods to normalize pelvic floor muscles (PFM) electromyography (EMG). METHODS Thirty nulliparous women (23.9 ± 3.2 years), free from PFM dysfunction, completed two test sessions 7 days apart. For EMG normalization, signals were acquired during four different tasks using a vaginal probe in situ: PFM maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and three daily activities with increased intra-abdominal pressure (coughing, Valsalva maneuver, and abdominal contraction). The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), relative standard error of measurement (%SEM), and minimal detectable change (MDC) were calculated for each variable. RESULTS ICC values for test-retest reliability of normalization methods ranged from 0.61 to 0.95. The highest values were obtained for mean root mean square (RMS) of the abdominal contraction and peak RMS of PFM-MVC. Normalization using RMS of PFM-MVC showed the lowest values of SEM and MDC. CONCLUSIONS The normalization of EMG data is considered a fundamental part of EMG investigations. These findings suggest that the normalization of PFM-EMG by either peak RMS of PFM-MVC or mean and peak RMS of abdominal contraction has excellent reliability and it can be applied in studies involving the evaluation of young women.

Abstract
PURPOSE To verify the elastic therapeutic tape effects on the trapezius muscle in healthy adults, using data from surface electromyography and a self-reported questionnaire. METHODS A total of 51 across sex healthy adults were enrolled in this study, whose age range was 20 to 35 years.. The individuals were divided into three groups: G1, who wore the elastic therapeutic tape applied with tension; G2, who wore the elastic therapeutic tape applied with no tension; and G3, control group, who did not wear the elastic therapeutic tape. The elastic therapeutic tape was bilaterally applied on the trapezius muscle. For measuring results, surface electromyography signals were collected before, while and after the elastic therapeutic tape was worn, and a qualitative questionnaire was applied. RESULTS There were no significant differences in either pre- or post-electromyography findings within each group, or when groups were compared. When comparing G1 and G2 moments before and while the elastic therapeutic tape was worn, a statistically significant difference was noted during the maximum voluntary contraction variable on the individuals' left side. When answering the questionnaire, most individuals mentioned a relaxing feeling while wearing the elastic therapeutic tape. CONCLUSION The individuals wearing the elastic therapeutic tape in this sample did not present any significant differences during the surface electromyography assessment. As for the questionnaire, most of the individuals investigated reported a relaxing feeling after wearing the elastic therapeutic tape.

Abstract
Ergonomic supports have become popular for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. This study sought to evaluate the efficacy of different ergonomic supports and their combination to reduce muscle activity of the neck and shoulder muscles. A one-way repeated measures design was used to evaluate 36 practicing dentists while they performed three posterior composite restoration procedures on a phantom head. Portable surface electromyography (sEMG) recordings were used to measure the muscle activity of three muscles (Upper Trapezius, Lateral Deltoid and Anterior Deltoid) in the dominant upper extremity, with and without the use of different ergonomic supports (ergonomic stool, magnification lenses and both) during the performance of these tasks. A repeated measures analysis of variance was used. The muscle activity of all muscles differed significantly across the four ergonomic conditions during the three tasks. The use of ergonomic supports such as magnification lenses, the ergonomic stool, or the combination of both, is effective for decreasing the muscle activity of the three muscles during the three tasks, when compared to standard practice. In addition, the decrease of muscle activity was higher using magnification lenses when compared to the ergonomic stool. Furthermore, the greatest decrease was found with the combination of both supports.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about trapezius muscle activities during scapular retraction exercises in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome. The aim of this study was to compare upper trapezius, middle trapezius and lower trapezius muscle activity and upper/middle and upper/lower trapezius ratios between patients with subacromial impingement syndrome and healthy individuals during six scapular retraction exercises. METHODS Twenty-two patients with subacromial impingement syndrome and 22 healthy individuals participated. Upper, middle, and lower trapezius activities were measured by surface electromyography, while the participants performed six scapular retraction exercises at different shoulder abduction angles in a standing position. Upper/middle and upper/lower trapezius ratios were also calculated. Repeated-measures analyses of variance were performed to determine whether muscle activation levels and ratios differed between groups during exercises. FINDINGS There was no significant exercise × group interactions for upper, middle, and lower trapezius activation levels and upper/middle and upper/lower trapezius ratios (P > .05). A main effect for the exercise was observed for the upper/middle and upper/lower trapezius ratios (P < .05). INTERPRETATION Compared to healthy individuals, patients with subacromial impingement syndrome did not exhibit different upper, middle, and lower trapezius activity and had similar upper/middle and upper/lower trapezius ratios during the various scapular retraction exercises. Therefore, scapular retraction exercises with various shoulder abduction could be safely offered for the patients with subacromial impingement syndrome since it does not lead to abnormal compensatory trapezius muscle activity. If the goal is to minimize upper/middle and upper/lower trapezius ratios, the scapular retraction exercises at 0° shoulder abduction may be used in early stage of shoulder rehabilitation.
