Abstract
This article describes the development of a recyclable polystyrene-based phosphonic acid resin and its use for the synthesis of immobilized glycosyl phosphonate donors and subsequent glycosylation reaction. This solid support was generated on a decagram scale from the commercially available Merrifield resin and subsequently functionalized via two different methods into eight different glycosylphosphonates. The resultant glycosylphosphonate-containing resins were obtained in 59-96% yields and were found to be bench-stable at room temperature. These donors could be activated using trifluoroborane etherate at 80 °C to react with various alcohol- and thiol-based acceptors to provide 17 different glycosides in good-to-excellent yields (53-98%). In addition, it was demonstrated that glycosylated resin could be recovered and recycled multiple times to regenerate immobilized glycosylphosphonate donors and could be subjected to on-resin glycan elongation.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of hospital-acquired infections. It is listed among the top "serious threats" to human health in the USA, due in large part to rising rates of resistance. Many S. aureus infections are recalcitrant to antibiotic therapy due to their ability to form a biofilm, which acts not only as a physical barrier to antibiotics and the immune system, but results in differences in metabolism that further restricts antibiotic efficacy. Development of a modular strategy to synthesize a library of phenolic glycosides allowed for bioactivity testing and identification of anti-biofilm compounds within an extract of the elmleaf blackberry (Rubus ulmifolius). Two ellagic acid (EA) derivatives, EA xyloside and EA rhamnoside, have been identified as components of the Rubus extract. In addition, EA rhamnoside has been identified as an inhibitor of biofilm formation, with activity comparable to the complex extract 220D-F2 (composed of a mixture of EA glycosides), and confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy analyses.

Abstract
The dual inhibitory action of the pain related peptide opiorphin (H-Gln-Arg-Phe-Ser-Arg-OH) against neutral endopeptidase (NEP) and aminopeptidase N (AP-N) was further investigated by a SAR study involving minor modifications on the polar side chains of Arg residues and glycosylation with monosaccharides at Ser. None of them exerted dual or individual inhibitory potency superior than opiorphin. However, the correlations deduced offer further proof for the key role of these residues upon the binding and bioactive conformational stabilization of opiorphin. NMR conformational studies on the glycopeptides suggest that they are still very flexible compounds that may attain their respective bioactive conformations.

Abstract
Natural products are important materials that have found a wide variety of uses, especially in medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has especially taken advantage of natural products and compounds found in Leonurus, a species of herb used extensively in TCM to treat various ailments. Herein we describe the synthesis of three natural products from Leonurus japonicus and our investigation of their hepatoprotective properties.

Abstract
An epimeric mixture of H-phosphonates 5R and 5S has been synthesized in three steps from known secouridine 1. Separation of the epimers has been accomplished by RP-HPLC, allowing full characterization and incorporation of monomers X and Y into 9-mer oligonucleotides using H-phosphonates building blocks 5R and 5S, respectively. A single incorporation of either monomer X or monomer Y in the central position of a DNA 9-mer results in decreased thermal affinity toward both DNA and RNA complements (ΔT(m) = -3.5 °C/-3.5 °C for monomer X and ΔT(m) = -11.0 °C/-6.5 °C for monomer Y). CD measurements do not reveal major rearrangements of the duplexes formed, but molecular modeling suggests that local rearrangement of the sugar phosphate backbone and decreased base interactions with neighboring bases might be the origin of the decreased stability of duplexes.

Abstract
Phosphoramidon blocks the formation of endothelin-1 (ET-1), a proinflammatory mediator implicated in the pathogenesis of a variety of lung diseases. To determine whether phosphoramidon can ameliorate pulmonary inflammation, our laboratory undertook a series of experiments involving treatment of hamsters with either intraperitoneal (i.p.) or aerosolized phosphoramidon prior to induction of acute lung injury by intratracheal administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The results indicate that phosphoramidon significantly reduces LPS-induced pulmonary inflammation as measured by lung histology, neutrophil content of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, percent tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1)-labeled BAL macrophages, and alveolar septal cell apoptosis. In additional experiments, i.p. administration of a novel endothelin A receptor anatgonist (HJP272) similarly decreased BAL neutrophils, whereas i.p. administration of either ET-1, or its precursor peptide, "big" ET-1, had the opposite effect. These findings support further evaluation of phosphoramidon and other ET-1 suppressors as potential treatments for human inflammatory lung disease.
