Abstract
The aim of this study is to synthesize novel piperazine-containing dihydrofuran compounds (3a-n)from radical additions and cyclizations of diacyl and alkyl-acyl piperazine derivatives (1a-h) with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds (2a-c) mediated by Mn(OAc)
3
for the first time. From the reactions of 1a-c with dimedone (2a);1a, 1c, and 1d with acetylacetone (2b); and 1a with ethylacetoacetate(2c) ,the dihydrofuran-piperazine compounds 3a-c, 3d-f, and 3g were obtained in medium to high yields (31%–81%), respectively. In addition, dihydrofuran-piperazine compounds 3h-j and 3k-n were prepared at low to medium yields (20%–40%) from the reactions of

with
2a
and
1e-h
with
2c
, respectively.

Abstract
Crude CH2Cl2 extract from leaves of Piper laevicarpu (Piperaceae) displayed antitrypanosomal activity against trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi (Y strain) and antimicrobial potential against Cryptococcus gattii (strain-type WM 178). Bioactivity-guided fractionation of crude extract afforded one new natural bioactive lactam derivative, named laevicarpin. The structure of isolated compound, which displayed a very rare ring system, was elucidated based on NMR, IR and MS spectral analysis. Using MTT assay, the trypomastigotes of T. cruzi demonstrated susceptibility to laevicarpin displaying IC50 value of 14.7μg/mL (49.6μM), about 10-fold more potent than the standard drug benznidazole. The mammalian cytotoxicity of laevicarpin was verified against murine fibroblasts (NCTC cells) and demonstrated a CC50 value of 100.3μg/mL (337.7μM-SI=7). When tested against Cryptococcus gattii, laevicarpin showed an IC50 value of 2.3μg/mL (7.9μM) and a MIC value of 7.4μg/mL (25μM). Based in the obtained results, laevicarpin could be used as a scaffold for future drug design studies against the Chagas disease and anti-cryptococosis agents.

Abstract
A comprehensive investigation of chemical constituents from brown algae Stoechospermum marginatum yielded ten known spatane compounds (1-10). To develop the compound libraries on these scaffolds, a series of semi synthetic derivatives was prepared (1a-1d, 2a, 4a, 11 and 12) and investigated for their anti-microbial and anticancer activities. The results indicated that compounds 2a, 4, 1b and 4a exhibited potent cytotoxic activities against B16F10 cancer cell line with IC50 values of 3.28, 3.45, 3.62 and 4.11 μg/ml respectively, which are comparable to the standard drug (etoposide IC50=4.12 μg/ml). In addition, 4 and 1b were also manifested potent antimicrobial activities against tested bacterial and fungal strains. This is the first Letter on the synthesis and biological activities of these novel derivatives.

Abstract
The chemical investigation of soft coral Sinularia kavarattiensis is described. It yielded furano-sesquiterpene carboxylic acids 1 and 2 and their methyl esters 3 and 4. Semi-synthesis of furano-sesquiterpene carboxylic acid 1 gave amide derivatives 5-12. Structures of all the compounds were established by IR, NMR and mass spectral analysis. Interestingly all compounds are selectively potent on leukemia cell line. All these compounds were screened for cytotoxic activity against five human cancer cell lines (leukemia, prostate, lung, breast and cervix). Among these compounds 9 and 10 showed promising activity against leukemia and prostate cancer cell lines.
