Lung_PAYNet: a pyramidal attention based deep learning network for lung nodule segmentation

Accurate and reliable lung nodule segmentation in computed tomography (CT) images is required for early diagnosis of lung cancer. Some of the difficulties in detecting lung nodules include the various types and shapes of lung nodules, lung nodules near other lung structures, and similar visual aspects. This study proposes a new model named Lung_PAYNet, a pyramidal attention-based architecture, for improved lung nodule segmentation in low-dose CT images. In this architecture, the encoder and decoder are designed using an inverted residual block and swish activation function. It also employs a feature pyramid attention network between the encoder and decoder to extract exact dense features for pixel classification. The proposed architecture was compared to the existing UNet architecture, and the proposed methodology yielded significant results. The proposed model was comprehensively trained and validated using the LIDC-IDRI dataset available in the public domain. The experimental results revealed that the Lung_PAYNet delivered remarkable segmentation with a Dice similarity coefficient of 95.7%, mIOU of 91.75%, sensitivity of 92.57%, and precision of 96.75%.

Research progress of computer aided diagnosis system for pulmonary nodules in CT images

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Since CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis) system can make it easier and more efficient to interpret CT (Computer Tomography) images, it has gained much attention and developed rapidly in recent years. This article reviews recent CAD techniques for pulmonary nodule detection and diagnosis in CT Images.

METHODS

CAD systems can be classified into computer-aided detection (CADe) and computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) systems. This review reports recent researches of both systems, including the database, technique, innovation and experimental results of each work. Multi-task CAD systems, which can handle segmentation, false positive reduction, malignancy prediction and other tasks at the same time. The commercial CAD systems are also briefly introduced.

RESULTS

We have found that deep learning based CAD is the mainstream of current research. The reported sensitivity of deep learning based CADe systems ranged between 80.06% and 94.1% with an average 4.3 false-positive (FP) per scan when using LIDC-IDRI dataset, and between 94.4% and 97.9% with an average 4 FP/scan when using LUNA16 dataset, respectively. The overall accuracy of deep learning based CADx systems ranged between 86.84% and 92.3% with an average AUC of 0.956 reported when using LIDC-IDRI dataset.

CONCLUSIONS

We summarized the current tendency and limitations as well as future challenges in this field. The development of CAD needs to meet the rigid clinical requirements, such as high accuracy, strong robustness, high efficiency, fine-grained analysis and classification, and to provide practical clinical functions. This review provides helpful information for both engineering researchers and radiologists to learn the latest development of CAD systems.

Automatic Lung Segmentation Based on Texture and Deep Features of HRCT Images with Interstitial Lung Disease

Lung segmentation in high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images is necessary before the computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Traditional methods are less intelligent and have lower accuracy of segmentation. This paper develops a novel automatic segmentation model using radiomics with a combination of hand-crafted features and deep features. The study uses ILD Database-MedGIFT from 128 patients with 108 annotated image series and selects 1946 regions of interest (ROI) of lung tissue patterns for training and testing. First, images are denoised by Wiener filter. Then, segmentation is performed by fusion of features that are extracted from the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) which is a classic texture analysis method and U-Net which is a standard convolutional neural network (CNN). The final experiment result for segmentation in terms of dice similarity coefficient (DSC) is 89.42%, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art methods. The training performance shows the effectiveness for a combination of texture and deep radiomics features in lung segmentation.

Automatic nodule detection for lung cancer in CT images: A review

Automatic lung nodule detection has great significance for treating lung cancer and increasing patient survival. This work summarizes a critical review of recent techniques for automatic lung nodule detection in computed tomography images. This review indicates the current tendency and obtained progress as well as future challenges in this field. This research covered the databases including Web of Science, PubMed, and the Press, including IEEE Xplore and Science Direct, up to May 2018. Each part of the paper is summarized carefully in terms of the method and validation results for better comparison. Based on the results, some techniques show better performance for lung nodule detection. However, researchers should pay attention to the existing challenges, such as high sensitivity with a low false positive rate, large and different patient databases, developing or optimizing the detection technique of various types of lung nodules with different sizes, shapes, textures and locations, combining electronic medical records and picture archiving and communication systems, building efficient feature sets for better classification and promoting the cooperation and communication between academic institutions and medical organizations. We believe that automatic computer-aided detection systems will be developed with strong robustness, high efficiency and security assurance. This review will be helpful for professional researchers and radiologists to further learn about the latest techniques in computer-aided detection systems.
