Flow ball-assisted voice training: Immediate effects on vocal fold contacting

Voice efficiency for different voice qualities combining experimentally derived sound signals and numerical modeling of the vocal tract

Purpose: Concerning voice efficiency considerations of different singing styles, from western classical singing to contemporary commercial music, only limited data is available to date. This single-subject study attempts to quantify the acoustic sound intensity within the human glottis depending on different vocal tract configurations and vocal fold vibration. Methods: Combining Finite-Element-Models derived from 3D-MRI data, audio recordings, and electroglottography (EGG) we analyzed vocal tract transfer functions, particle velocity and acoustic pressure at the glottis, and EGG-related quantities to evaluate voice efficiency at the glottal level and resonance characteristics of different voice qualities according to Estill Voice Training^®. Results: Voice qualities Opera and Belting represent highly efficient strategies but apply different vowel strategies and should thus be capable of predominate orchestral sounds. Twang and Belting use similar vowels, but the twang vocal tract configuration enabled the occurrence of anti-resonances and was associated with reduced vocal fold contact but still partially comparable energy transfer from the glottis to the vocal tract. Speech was associated with highly efficient glottal to vocal tract energy transfer, but with the absence of psychoactive strategies makes it more susceptible to noise interference. Falsetto and Sobbing apply less efficiently. Falsetto mainly due to its voice source characteristics, Sobbing due to energy loss in the vocal tract. Thus technical amplification might be appropriate here. Conclusion: Differences exist between voice qualities regarding the sound intensity, caused by different vocal tract morphologies and oscillation characteristics of the vocal folds. The combination of numerical analysis of geometries inside the human body and experimentally determined data outside sheds light on acoustical quantities at the glottal level.

Effect of Varied Tube Phonation in Water Exercises on Nasometric and Electroglottographic parameters: Modification in Terms of Fluid Density and Tube Submerged Depth

OBJECTIVE

Within the scope of semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs), we aimed to examine the effects of four exercise combinations, which involved various fluid densities and tube submersion depths, on acoustic and electroglottographic (EGG) parameters.

METHODS

Four procedures (P) were applied consecutively to 30 female participants with normal voices using different tube submersion depths and fluid densities, including P1 (2 cm, water), P2 (2 cm, nectar), P3 (10 cm, water), and P4 (10 cm, nectar). Nasometric (Nasometer II model 6450) and EGG (Electroglottograph model 6103) measurements were taken before the procedures were initiated (pre-test) and at the end of each procedure. In addition, EGG measurements were taken for each procedure during the application.

RESULTS

For all three velar positions (oral passage, oro-nasal passage, nasal passage), the only procedure that caused a significant change compared to the pre-test stage in regard to nasalance score was P2 (2 cm nectar) in common. All other procedures except P1 (2 cm water) significantly increased velar closure compared to pre-test levels. However, when the differences between the exercises were examined, the least velar closure, compared to the other procedures, was obtained after P4 (10 cm nectar). While there was no significant difference between the procedures in the EGG measurements during the exercise, a significantly higher tendency to contact was observed after the procedures with a denser consistency, and an increase in the fundamental frequency (fo) values occurred in the pairwise comparisons of the procedures in the measurements after the exercises.

CONCLUSION

In SOVTEs in which water phonation is performed with a tube, the use of a fluid with a consistency denser than water can be considered a particularly promising approach. In addition, exercises performed with increasing consistencies in 2 cm depth can provide more vocal cord and velopharyngeal port closure by increasing EGG-CQ and nasalance score values. However, more care should be taken while increasing the consistency at a submersion depth of 10 cm.

Electroglottograph-Based Speech Emotion Recognition via Cross-Modal Distillation

Speech emotion recognition (SER) is an important component of emotion computation and signal processing. Recently, many works have applied abundant acoustic features and complex model architectures to enhance the model’s performance, but these works sacrifice the portability of the model. To address this problem, we propose a model utilizing only the fundamental frequency from electroglottograph (EGG) signals. EGG signals are a sort of physiological signal that can directly reflect the movement of the vocal cord. Under the assumption that different acoustic features share similar representations in the internal emotional state, we propose cross-modal emotion distillation (CMED) to train the EGG-based SER model by transferring robust speech emotion representations from the log-Mel-spectrogram-based model. Utilizing the cross-modal emotion distillation, we achieve an increase of recognition accuracy from 58.98% to 66.80% on the S70 subset of the Chinese Dual-mode Emotional Speech Database (CDESD 7-classes) and 32.29% to 42.71% on the EMO-DB (7-classes) dataset, which shows that our proposed method achieves a comparable result with the human subjective experiment and realizes a trade-off between model complexity and performance.

Limited text speech synthesis with electroglottograph based on Bi-LSTM and modified Tacotron-2

This paper proposes a framework of applying only the EGG signal for speech synthesis in the limited categories of contents scenario. EGG is a sort of physiological signal which can reflect the trends of the vocal cord movement. Note that EGG’s different acquisition method contrasted with speech signals, we exploit its application in speech synthesis under the following two scenarios. (1) To synthesize speeches under high noise circumstances, where clean speech signals are unavailable. (2) To enable dumb people who retain vocal cord vibration to speak again. Our study consists of two stages, EGG to text and text to speech. The first is a text content recognition model based on Bi-LSTM, which converts each EGG signal sample into the corresponding text with a limited class of contents. This model achieves 91.12% accuracy on the validation set in a 20-class content recognition experiment. Then the second step synthesizes speeches with the corresponding text and the EGG signal. Based on modified Tacotron-2, our model gains the Mel cepstral distortion (MCD) of 5.877 and the mean opinion score (MOS) of 3.87, which is comparable with the state-of-the-art performance and achieves an improvement by 0.42 and a relatively smaller model size than the origin Tacotron-2. Considering to introduce the characteristics of speakers contained in EGG to the final synthesized speech, we put forward a fine-grained fundamental frequency modification method, which adjusts the fundamental frequency according to EGG signals and achieves a lower MCD of 5.781 and a higher MOS of 3.94 than that without modification.

Quantitative and Qualitative Electroglottographic Wave Shape Differences in Children and Adults Using Voice Map-Based Analysis

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the extent to which various measurements of contacting parameters differ between children and adults during habitual range and overlap vocal frequency/intensity, using voice map-based assessment of noninvasive electroglottography (EGG). Method EGG voice maps were analyzed from 26 adults (22-45 years) and 22 children (4-8 years) during connected speech and vowel /a/ over the habitual range and the overlap vocal frequency/intensity from the voice range profile task on the vowel /a/. Mean and standard deviations of contact quotient by integration, normalized contacting speed, quotient of speed by integration, and cycle-rate sample entropy were obtained. Group differences were evaluated using the linear mixed model analysis for the habitual range connected speech and the vowel, whereas analysis of covariance was conducted for the overlap vocal frequency/intensity from the voice range profile task. Presence of a "knee" on the EGG wave shape was determined by visual inspection of the presence of convexity along the decontacting slope of the EGG pulse and the presence of the second derivative zero-crossing. Results The contact quotient by integration, normalized contacting speed, quotient of speed by integration, and cycle-rate sample entropy were significantly different in children compared to (a) adult males for habitual range and (b) adult males and adult females for the overlap vocal frequency/intensity. None of the children had a "knee" on the decontacting slope of the EGG slope. Conclusion EGG parameters of contact quotient by integration, normalized contacting speed, quotient of speed by integration, cycle-rate sample entropy, and absence of a "knee" on the decontacting slope characterize the wave shape differences between children and adults, whereas the normalized contacting speed, quotient of speed by integration, cycle-rate sample entropy, and presence of a "knee" on the downward pulse slope characterize the wave shape differences between adult males and adult females.
