Abstract
INTRODUCTION Statistical and epidemiological data taken throughout decades show trends of the pathology of burns and its treatment. The aim of this study is to analyze the summarized epidemiological and clinical data of severe burn patients during the period 2009-2019 in order to acquire an accurate and recent picture of this pathology. This can create a basis for improving community health outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHOD The study retrospectively analyzes the data of severe burn patients admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Service of Burns and Plastic Surgery of the University Hospital Center in Tirana, Albania, from 2009 to 2019. SPSS 23 software is used for the conduction of the Descriptive and Inferential Statistics. Statistical significance is defined as p<0.05. RESULTS Incidence rate of burn admissions which need ICU treatment in our data was 5.2 patients/100,000population/year. The mean age of our population was 24.9±25.5 years. The most frequent causes of burns in all patients were scalds (49.6%) followed by flame (39.5%), electrical (5.1%), chemical (5%) and with unknown cause (0.7%). Death rate from fire and burns for the period 2009-2019 was 0.3 patients per 100,000population/year. Overall mortality was 6.8%. The ABSI, Baux and R Baux scoring system remain accurate and valuable tools in the prediction of burn patient mortality. A probability of death chart for our service has been developed based on age and BSA (%) burned which needs to validate in the future. CONCLUSIONS Etiology of burns have changed toward an increase in proportion of flame burns especially in adults and elderly population. Survival following severe burns has improved over the past 11 years even in patients with three risk factors (age ≥60, BSA (%) burned ≥40% and presence of inhalation burn). LA 50 for all patients was 80%. LOS/BSA (%) ratio is a more valuable indicator than LOS alone. Improvement in the treatment of severe burns is a combination of preventive health care, appropriate treatment protocols and improvements in equipment and infrastructure.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Paediatric population still represents a high burden of hospitalisations among burns inpatients. Children under five years old have a distinct aetiology distribution comparing to other age groups, representing in Portugal a fifth of all hospitalisations with burns. We aimed to describe the demographic and clinical burden of burns requiring hospitalization, as well as hospitalization charges, among this age group in Portugal. METHODS We performed a retrospective study including inpatients younger than five years-old and discharged between 2011 and 2015 in a public Portuguese hospital with a main or secondary diagnosis of burns (ICD-9-CM: 940.xx-949.xx). Clinical and demographics characteristics were assessed, as well as hospital reimbursement charges. RESULTS A total of 1217 hospitalisations with burns were found, with a hospitalization rate of 54.6 hospitalisations/100,000 inhabitants/year, higher among boys. Ninety percent of them were due to hot liquid or objects. There were three in-hospital deaths. There was a median length of stay of 9days and a mean hospitalization reimbursed charge of 3073 Euros (4918 I$). Non-rural: rural hospitalization rate ratio was of 0.42:1. Évora and Bragança were the districts with higher hospitalization rate with 116 and 107, respectively. DISCUSSION This Portuguese nation-wide study on hospitalisations with burns highlights that 90% of all burns were due to hot liquid or object and a major impact of patients younger than 2years old in this age group. Urban vs rural difference in hospitalization rate should also be considered for further health inequalities' studies. As conclusion, ongoing attention needs to be dedicated to paediatric burn prevention and safety cost-effective strategies, particularly in relation to scalds, to further reduce the incidence of burn hospitalisations in children and the associated hospital costs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In South Africa, injuries are the third leading cause of death and disability. Children are especially susceptible to unintentional injuries, especially pedestrian injuries, burns and drowning. Injury risk is informed by children's exposure to adverse environmental circumstances, and individual capacities dependent on developmental maturity. Boys are at greater risk than girls. This study investigates the incidence of fatal childhood injuries as well as sex differences across psychosocial development stages. METHODS Data on fatal injuries in Gauteng, South Africa's most populous province, were obtained from the National Injury Mortality Surveillance System. The analysis drew on Erikson's psychosocial theory of development which was used to create meaningful age groups. Age-specific population data from the 2011 Census were used to calculate rates, and significant differences were determined through the generation of risk ratios and confidence intervals. RESULTS There were 5404 fatal injuries among children in Gauteng from 2008 to 2011. The average age of victims was 8.9 years, and the majority male (65.6%). In infancy, the mortality rates for all injuries and non-traffic unintentional injuries were significantly higher than for the other age groups. Burns were the most common cause of death in infancy and early childhood. Pedestrian injuries accounted for a third of mortality in preschool and school age, and homicide rates were significantly higher in adolescence than in the other developmental stages. For injuries in general, boys had significantly higher mortality rates than girls in all age groups except preschool. The only instance where the mortality rate for girls was significantly higher than for boys was for adolescent ingestion poisoning suicides. CONCLUSIONS The exposure to environmental and social risks is differentially moderated with maturing age and levels of autonomy. The sex of the child also informs risk. The nature of these risks is important when considering child injury prevention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burn injuries are the most frequently occurring injuries among pediatric populations worldwide, and they are significant pediatric injuries in Iran. AIM This study was conducted to analyze the pattern of pediatric burns in Khuzestan province in the south-west of Iran from April 2006 to March 2007. PATIENTS AND METHODS The location of the study was Taleghani Hospital, a sole center for burn patients in Khuzestan province. The number of patients with burns admitted to the center in 1 year (from April 2006 to March 2007) was 211. Data were obtained by reviewing the medical records of patients hospitalized at the center. RESULTS Of the patients, 85 (40.3%) were female and 126 (59.7%) were male. Of the 85 female patients, 50 were from urban areas and 35 were from rural areas. Of the 126 male patients, 68 (54%) were from urban areas and 58 (46%) were from rural areas. The mean ± SE age of the children ranging between 0 and 11 years was 3.20 ± 0.188. Scalding was the predominant cause of burns and caused 86.7% of the burns. The age of the patients with scald injuries (2.95 ± 2.56 years) was significantly lower than that of patients with flame injuries (4.28 ± 3.3 years) (P=0.007). Correlation analysis showed that younger children and urban residents are more vulnerable to scald injuries. The mean body surface area of burns was 20.5 ± 10.26 cm in all patients. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS Scalding was the most common cause of burns. Age <4 years and residency in urban areas were the major factors increasing the risk of burn accidents in children in Khuzestan. An appropriate burn prevention program, with focus on education, is needed to prevent this injury.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Burn injury is a serious pathology, potentially leading to severe morbidity and significant mortality, but it also has a considerable health-economic impact. The aim of this study was to describe the European hospitalized population with severe burn injury, including the incidence, etiology, risk factors, mortality, and causes of death. METHODS The systematic literature search (1985 to 2009) involved PubMed, the Web of Science, and the search engine Google. The reference lists and the Science Citation Index were used for hand searching (snowballing). Only studies dealing with epidemiologic issues (for example, incidence and outcome) as their major topic, on hospitalized populations with severe burn injury (in secondary and tertiary care) in Europe were included. Language restrictions were set on English, French, and Dutch. RESULTS The search led to 76 eligible studies, including more than 186,500 patients in total. The annual incidence of severe burns was 0.2 to 2.9/10,000 inhabitants with a decreasing trend in time. Almost 50% of patients were younger than 16 years, and ~60% were male patients. Flames, scalds, and contact burns were the most prevalent causes in the total population, but in children, scalds clearly dominated. Mortality was usually between 1.4% and 18% and is decreasing in time. Major risk factors for death were older age and a higher total percentage of burned surface area, as well as chronic diseases. (Multi) organ failure and sepsis were the most frequently reported causes of death. The main causes of early death (< 48 hours) were burn shock and inhalation injury. CONCLUSIONS Despite the lack of a large-scale European registration of burn injury, more epidemiologic information is available about the hospitalized population with severe burn injury than is generally presumed. National and international registration systems nevertheless remain necessary to allow better targeting of prevention campaigns and further improvement of cost-effectiveness in total burn care.
