Abstract
BACKGROUND Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized tissue-sparing technique used to treat skin cancers. OBJECTIVE By understanding the attributes that make a research paper one of the top 100 cited papers on Mohs surgery, we hope to illuminate seminal research in this field. METHODS AND MATERIALS The global literature about Mohs surgery published between 1900 and 2023 was searched on the Web of Science. Publication data for all results meeting the search criteria were exported and analyzed. RESULTS In total, 4,961 publications with 81,405 citations were identified. Dermatologic Surgery was the most cited journal, with 1,073 publications. Papers from the top 100 most cited that were published in the year 2000 or prior had an average of 22.1 citations in the first five years after publication, whereas papers published after 2001 had an average of 56.0 citations in the first five years. CONCLUSION Analysis of the most cited papers on Mohs surgery demonstrates the influential role of the Dermatological Surgery journal in advancing the field. Noteworthy studies addressing cost, safety, and efficacy have received substantial citations, reflecting their significance within the literature. A trend toward more citation in the first five years after publication over time was identified.

Abstract
Background: Gender-affirming surgery is becoming more common among reconstructive surgeons. Bibliometric analyses are statistical evaluations of published scientific correspondence and are a validated method of measuring influence in the scientific community. As no such bibliometric analysis has been done as of yet, the purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of the 50 most-cited peer-reviewed articles on gender-affirming surgery. Methods: The Scopus abstract and citation database was utilized in April 2020 to search for English-language publications related to gender-affirming surgery. The 50 most-cited publications that met inclusion criteria were reviewed for various metric tabulations. Results: The 50 publications have been cited a total of 4402 times. Thirty-one (62%) were published in 2000 or later. Phalloplasty was the most discussed surgical technique, and 18 of the articles focused on female-to-male (FtM) patients. Case series (46%) and review articles (24%) were most common and there were no Level I or Level II studies. The Netherlands contributed the most, with 13 articles. Among the most frequent keywords in the 50 abstracts were "flap" and "complication". The earliest author keywords used were "transsexual" and "sex reassignment". Conclusions: The keyword usage in these abstracts over time seems to follow the trend of a more socially inclusive lexicon. A focus on studies with a higher level of evidence may optimize surgeon education and more appropriately guide clinical practice. This study reveals that the most influential and commonly referenced studies may not be sufficient to appropriately guide clinical practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burn injury is associated with significant mortality and disability. Resilient and responsive health systems are needed for optimal response and care for people who sustain burn injuries. However, the extent of health systems research (HSR) in burn care is unknown. This review aimed to systematically map the global HSR related to burn care. METHODS An evidence gap map (EGM) was developed based on the World Health Organization health systems framework. All major medical, health and injury databases were searched. A standard method was used to develop the EGM. RESULTS A total of 6586 articles were screened, and the full text of 206 articles was reviewed, of which 106 met the inclusion criteria. Most included studies were cross-sectional (61%) and were conducted in hospitals (71%) with patients (48%) or healthcare providers (29%) as participants. Most studies were conducted in high-income countries, while only 13% were conducted in low-and middle-income countries, accounting for 60% of burns mortality burden globally. The most common health systems areas of focus were service delivery (53%), health workforce (33%) and technology (19%). Studies on health policy, governance and leadership were absent, and there were only 14 qualitative studies. CONCLUSIONS Major evidence gaps exist for an integrated health systems response to burns care. There is an inequity between the burden of burn injuries and HSR. Strengthening research capacity will facilitate evidence-informed health systems and policy reforms to sustainably improve access to affordable, equitable and optimal burn care and outcomes.

Abstract
Background: Transdermal delivery has become a crucial field in pharmaceutical research. There has been a proliferation of innovative methods for transdermal drug delivery. In recent years, the number of publications regarding transdermal drug delivery has been rising rapidly. To investigate the current research trends and hotspots in transdermal drug delivery, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis was performed. Methods: An extensive literature review was conducted to gather information on transdermal drug delivery that had been published between 2003 and 2022. The articles were obtained from the Web of Science (WOS) and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) databases. Subsequently, the collected data underwent analysis and visualization using a variety of software tools. This approach enables a deeper exploration of the hotspots and emerging trends within this particular research domain. Results: The results showed that the number of articles published on transdermal delivery has increased steadily over the years, with a total of 2,555 articles being analyzed. The most frequently cited articles were related to the optimization of drug delivery and the use of nanotechnology in transdermal drug delivery. The most active countries in the field of transdermal delivery research were the China, United States, and India. Furthermore, the hotspots over the past 2 decades were identified (e.g., drug therapy, drug delivery, and pharmaceutical preparations and drug design). The shift in research focus reflects an increasing emphasis on drug delivery and control release, rather than simply absorption and penetration, and suggests a growing interest in engineering approaches to transdermal drug delivery. Conclusion: This study provided a comprehensive overview of transdermal delivery research. The research indicated that transdermal delivery would be a rapidly evolving field with many opportunities for future research and development. Moreover, this bibliometric analysis will help researchers gain insights into transdermal drug delivery research's hotspots and trends accurately and quickly.

Abstract
Whiplash injury is a common diagnosis and causes substantial economic burden. Numerous papers have been published to provide new insights into whiplash injury. However, so far there has not been a comprehensive analysis of the most influential publications on whiplash injury. This study aimed to determine the 100 most cited publications on whiplash injury and analyze their characteristics. A keyword search was conducted using the Web of Science database. The top 100 cited publications relevant to whiplash injury were gathered. The main characteristics including title, year of publication, citation, authorship, journal, country, institution, and topic were generated. The number of citations of the top 100 cited publications ranged from 82 to 777. Fifteen countries contributed the top 100 publications. Australia had the largest number of publications (26), followed by the United States (21), and Canada (12). The majority of the publications were from Europe (40) and North America (33). A total of 19 institutions and 17 authors published more than one publication. The University of Queensland (16) and the author Sterling M (7) had the leading publication record. This is the first citation analysis to identify and characterize the highest impact researches on whiplash injury. The present analysis provides the most influential studies on whiplash injury, and reveals the leading journals, counties, institutions, and authors with special contributions in this filed. The list may serve as an archive of historical development of whiplash injury and a basis for further research.

Abstract
The pandemic led to a significant change in the clinical routine of many orthopaedic surgeons. To observe the impact of the pandemic on scientific output all studies published in the fields of orthopaedics listed in the Web of Science databases were analysed regarding the scientific merit of the years 2019, 2020, and 2021. Subsequently, correlation analyses were performed with parameters of regional pandemic situation (obtained from WHO) and economic strength (obtained from the World Bank). The investigations revealed that the Covid-19 pandemic led to a decrease in the annual publication rate for the first time in 20 years (2020 to 2021: –5.69%). There were regional differences in the publication rate, which correlated significantly with the respective Covid-19 case count (r = –.77, p < 0.01), associated death count (r = –.63, p < 0.01), and the gross domestic product per capita (r = –.40, p < 0.01) but not with the number of vaccinations (r = .09, p = 0.30). Furthermore, there was a drastic decrease in funding from private agencies (relative share: 2019: 36.43%, 2020: 22.66%, 2021: 19.22%), and a balanced decrease in publication output for research areas of acute and elective patient care. The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a decline in orthopaedic annual publication rates for the first time in 20 years. This reduction was subject to marked regional differences and correlated directly with the pandemic load and was associated with decreased research funding from the private sector.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Microneedles composed of arrays of micro-sized needles assembled on a patch, has attracted increasing interest in transdermal drug delivery due to its ease of use and lack of painful responses. Here, a bibliometric analysis was conducted to determine a hotspot and trend of microneedles in the biomedical field. METHODS All relevant articles about microneedles between 2011 and 2020 were obtained from the databases of Web of Science (WOS) and PubMed of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). A series of software such as VOSviwewer, the online bibliometric analysis website, CiteSpace, BICOMB and gCLUTO were used to process the data and get visual images. Processed data and visualized images were conducted to predict the trend of this research field. RESULTS The number of articles published over the last decade had increased rapidly (37 in 2011, 165 in 2020), the Journal of Controlled Release was the most productive journal in microneedle studies. The United States was the most productive country, while the Queens Univ Belfast topped the other institutions. Ryan F Donnelly was the most productive author in the field, while the two most cited articles were published by Gu Zhen group. More importantly, the research trend of microneedles had ranged from physicochemical properties and pharmacokinetics to insulin transdermal injection and vaccine development over the past decade. The four hot spots in microneedle studies, including skin rejuvenation, vaccines, fabrication technology and insulin delivery, were identified. Microneedle vaccination shows promising application prospects, and polymers are considered as the most promising materials for microneedles manufacturing. CONCLUSIONS This study will help researchers understand the hot spots and trends of microneedles in the biomedical field accurately and quickly. Moreover, the exploitation of novel polymeric microneedles will be a solid direction for subsequent research and development of transdermal drug delivery.

Abstract
Brachial plexus injury is often debilitating because it can severely impair upper extremity function and, thus, quality of life. The surgical treatment of injuries to the brachial plexus is very demanding because it requires a profound understanding of the anatomy and expertise in microsurgery. The aim of this study was to get an overview of the landscape in adult brachial plexus injury surgery, and to understand how this has changed over the years. Methods The most frequently cited articles in English relevant to adult brachial plexus injury were identified through the Web of Science online database. Results The average number of citations per article was 32.8 (median 24, range 4-158). Authors from 26 countries contributed to our list, and the US was the biggest contributor. Almost half of all nerve transfer cases were described by Asian authors. Amongst nerve transfer, the spinal accessory nerve was the preferred donor overall, except in Asia, where intercostal nerves were preferred. Distal nerve transfers were described more often than plexo-plexal and extra-plexal-to-plexal transfers. The most common grafts were sural nerve grafts and vascularized ulnar nerve grafts, which became popular in the last decade. Conclusions Our study sheds light on the regional variations in treatment trends of adult brachial plexus injury, and on the evolution of the field over the last 30 years. The articles included in our analysis are an excellent foundation for those interested in the surgical management of brachial plexus injuries.

Abstract
Objective To highlight the characteristics of the most highly cited articles and propose the research interests over the past decades in the field of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and labral tear. Methods The ISI Web of Science database (Clarivate Analytics, New York, the United States) was utilized for the identification of articles on 15 December 2020. FAI and labral tear‐related articles (1138 articles) were retrieved, of which the 100 most‐cited articles (top 100) were identified. Subsequent analysis included citation density (citations/article age), authorship, institution, journal, geographic distribution, level of evidence, and theme. Results The number of citations per article ranged from 66 to 1189 with a mean of 163.31. The majority of articles were published in the United States (all articles/top 100 = 655/57) and Switzerland (85/22). University of Bern (n = 10) was the most prolific institution. The journal with the most of articles was Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery. The most prolific coauthor (all articles) or first authors (top 100) was Domb (n = 109) and Philippon (n = 6), respectively. The evidence with the most articles is level IV (n = 41). The top three most popular topics of research article were outcomes of surgery (n = 23), imaging diagnosis (n = 18), and comparison of surgery (n = 8). The top four most prevalent themes of review were labral tears (n = 3), FAI (n = 3), comparison of surgery imaging diagnosis, and outcomes of surgery (both n = 2). Six keywords with the newest average publication year, including FAI syndrome (average publication year = 2019.50), patient‐reported outcomes (2019.43), femoroplasty (2018.60), clinical outcomes (2018.17), borderline dysplasia (2018.00), and capsule (2018.00). Five keywords with the highest average citations, including outcome (average citations = 88.50), alpha angle (58.00), complications (55.86), revision hip arthroscopy (49.00), and systematic review (46.14). Conclusions Outcomes research is the most popular research interest and patient‐reported outcome instruments might be further and widely used in the emerging articles in the near future. The field of FAI and labral tear has shown an obvious trend of development and is steadily evolving. It could be predicted that there will be an increasing number of publications in the following years, with the United States and Switzerland maintaining leadership in this field.

Abstract
Background In this study, we aimed to examine the development of knowledge on pectus deformities through a meticulous analysis of the 100 most-cited articles published on this topic. Methods Publications related to pectus deformities from January 1975 to April 2020 were scanned using the Web of Science Core Collection database. The publications were ranked from maximum to minimum according to the number of citations and were examined in detail. Results The 100 articles were published in 27 different journals and received a total of 8,290 citations. The average of the impact factors of journals in 2018 was 4.441. The mean citation density of all articles was 5.1±3.8. In the past years, a surgical technique definition and experience transfer were more frequently used, while complications and technical details were started to be presented in recent years. Conclusion Our study results suggest that the studies of pectus deformities would continue and, from now on, issues such as complications and technical details would come to the forefront in the articles.

Abstract
Background The concept of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) has become widely accepted, gaining increased attention in recent years and resulting in many research achievements in this field. Purpose The aim of this study was to determine which original articles on ACLR have been most influential in this field by identifying and analyzing the characteristics of the 100 most cited articles. Study Design Cross-sectional study. Methods Articles on ACLR were identified via the Thomson ISI Web of Science database on November 30, 2019. The 100 most cited articles were identified based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data extracted from each article for the subsequent analysis included title, date of publication, total citations, average citations per year (ACY), journal name, first author, institutions, themes, level of evidence, and keywords. Results The total number of citations was 29,629. The date of publication ranged from 1975 to 2015. A majority of the articles originated from the United States (58%) and were published in the 1990s (32%) and 2000s (48%). The mean ACY was 18.43 ± 9.51. Of the selected articles, nearly one-half were published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (42%). The most prolific co-author and first author were Freddie H. Fu (n = 13) and K. Donald Shelbourne (n = 5), respectively. The most productive institution was the University of Pittsburgh (14%). Material comparison (19%) and technique comparison (16%) were the 2 most popular themes. More than one-quarter of articles were level 4 evidence (37%). Moreover, the keywords ACL, ACL reconstruction, ACL rupture, knee joint, knee injuries, and human showed the highest degree of centrality. Conclusion By analyzing the characteristics of articles, this study demonstrated that ACLR is a growing and popular area of research, with the focus of research varying through timeline trends. Studies on anatomic reconstruction and biomechanics might be areas of future trends.

Abstract
Although many reviews describe significant advances in burn care, no studies have yet examined why these papers had such profound impact. Our objective was to identify the most highly cited, as well as the most clinically influential studies in burns, and describe their characteristics, to inform future research in the field. Web of Science was searched using keywords related to burns to identify the 100 most-cited burns papers. Study design, year and journal of publication, and subject of the paper were recorded. A mixed-methods approach was used to identify papers in burn research leading to change in clinical practice. Characteristics of these papers were compared with identify any factors predictive of future citations or clinical influence. The 100 highly cited papers were cited between 159 and 907 times. There was no correlation between total citations and journal impact factor, year of publication, or subject area. Level of evidence did not predict future citations or influence, but may be influenced by evolving research standards. Of 23 clinically influential studies, 6 were not among 100 most-cited. Using papers only from the 100 most-cited list was not sufficient to identify leading researchers in burns. Citation analysis is a beneficial, however not alone sufficient to identify landmark papers, particularly for multidisciplinary fields such as burns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The number of citations a scientific paper has received indicates its impact within any medical field. We performed a bibliometric analysis to highlight the key topics of the most frequently cited 100 articles on perianal fistula to determine the advances in this field. METHODS The Scopus database was searched from 1960 to 2018 using the search terms "perianal fistula" or "anal fistula" or "fistula in ano" or "anal fistulae" or "anorectal fistulae" including full articles. The topic, year of publication, publishing journal, country of origin, institution, and department of the first author were analyzed. RESULTS The median number of citations for the top 100 of 3431 eligible papers, ranked in order of the number of citations, was 100 (range: 65-811), and the number of citations per year was 7.5 (range: 3.8-40.1). The most-cited paper (by Parks et al in 1976; 811citations) focused on the classification of perianal fistula. The institution with the highest number of publications was St Mark's Hospital, London, UK. The most-studied topic was surgical management (n = 47). The country and the decade with the greatest number of publications in this field were the USA (n = 34) and the 2000s (n = 50), respectively. CONCLUSION The 100 most frequently cited manuscripts showed that surgical management had the greatest impact on the study of perianal fistula. This citation analysis provides a reference of what could be considered the most classic papers on perianal fistula, and may serve as a reference for researchers and clinicians as to what constitutes a citable paper in this field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to highlight the key studies that have led to the current understanding and treatment of head and neck cancer. METHOD The Thomson Reuters Web of Science database was used to identify relevant manuscripts. The results were ranked according to the number of citations. The 100 most cited papers were analysed. RESULTS A total of 63 538 eligible papers were returned. The median number of citations was 626. The most cited paper compared radiotherapy with and without cetuximab (3205 citations). The New England Journal of Medicine had the most citations (23 514), and the USA had the greatest number of publications (n = 66). The most common topics of publication were the treatment (n = 45) and basic science (n = 19) of head and neck cancer, followed by the role of human papillomavirus (n = 16). CONCLUSION This analysis highlighted key articles that influenced head and neck cancer research and treatment. It serves as a guide as to what makes a 'citable' paper in this field.

Abstract
Since the first robotic assisted surgery in 1985, the number of procedures performed annually has steadily increased. Bibliometric analysis highlights the key studies that have influenced current practice in a field of interest. We use bibliometric analysis to evaluate the 100 most cited manuscripts on robotic surgery and discuss their content and influence on the evolution of the platform. The terms 'robotic surgery,' 'robot assisted surgery' and 'robot-assisted surgery' were used to search Thomson Reuters Web of Science database for full length, English language manuscripts. The top 100 cited manuscripts were analyzed by manuscript type, surgical specialty, first and last author, institution, year and journal of publication. 14,980 manuscripts were returned. Within the top 100 cited manuscripts, the majority featured urological surgery (n = 28), followed by combined results from multiple surgical subspecialties (n = 15) and colorectal surgery (n = 13). The majority of manuscripts featured case series/reports (n = 42), followed by comparative studies (n = 24). The most cited paper authored by Nelson et al. (432 citations) reviewed technological advances in the field. The year and country with the greatest number of publications were 2009 (n = 15) and the USA (n = 68). The Johns Hopkins University published the most top 100 manuscripts (n = 18). The 100 most cited manuscripts reflect the progression of robotic surgery from a basic instrument-holding platform to today's articulated instruments with 3D technology. From feasibility studies to multicenter trials, this analysis demonstrates how robotic assisted surgery has gained acceptance in urological, colorectal, general, cardiothoracic, orthopedic, maxillofacial and neuro surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A substantial global inequality exists between surgical need and the availability of safe, affordable surgical care. Low- and middle-income countries have the greatest burden of untreated surgical disease and addressing this inequity is the goal of the Global Surgery movement. Reconstructive surgery is a fundamental component of Global Surgery as it is central to the appropriate treatment of trauma, burns, wounds, and congenital malformations. The objective of this study was to analyze the most frequently cited articles in the field of global reconstructive surgery to understand the main publication trends. METHODS The 25 most cited articles relating to global reconstructive surgery were identified from all available journals through the Web of Science online database. The following data were extracted from each included article: title, source journal, publication year, total citations, average citations per year, authors, main subject, reconstructive surgery subspecialty, country, and institution of origin. RESULTS The average number of citations per article was 21.7 (median, 19; range, 10-40). Most articles originated from the United States, and only 1 originated from a low-income country. The majority of the articles focused on cleft lip and palate (CLP) (72%), with few articles discussing burns or trauma. The main discussion themes were the quality of care provided in low- and middle-income countries both by local and visiting teams, the burden of diseases in relation to global reconstructive surgery, and the impact of surgical interventions economically and on patients. CONCLUSIONS The number of research articles and citations related to global reconstructive surgery are limited. Despite having a lower incidence than burns or trauma, there is a preponderance of reports focusing on missions treating CLP. These findings suggest that more research funding could be invested in global reconstructive surgery for conditions other than CLP.

Abstract
Background: From time to time, neuroimaging research findings receive press coverage and attention by the general public. Scientific articles therefore should be written in a readable manner to facilitate knowledge translation and dissemination. However, no published readability report on neuroimaging articles like those published in education, medical and marketing journals is available. As a start, this study therefore aimed to evaluate the readability of the most-cited neuroimaging articles. Methods: The 100 most-cited articles in neuroimaging identified in a recent study by Kim et al. (2016) were evaluated. Headings, mathematical equations, tables, figures, footnotes, appendices, and reference lists were trimmed from the articles. The rest was processed for number of characters, words and sentences. Five readability indices that indicate the school grade appropriate for that reading difficulty (Automated Readability Index, Coleman-Liau Index, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning Fog index and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook index) were computed. An average reading grade level (AGL) was calculated by taking the mean of these five indices. The Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) score was also computed. The readability of the trimmed abstracts and full texts was evaluated against number of authors, country of corresponding author, total citation count, normalized citation count, article type, publication year, impact factor of the year published and type of journal. Results: Mean AGL ± standard deviation (SD) of the trimmed abstracts and full texts were 17.15 ± 2.81 (college graduate level) and 14.22 ± 1.66 (college level) respectively. Mean FRE score ± SD of the abstracts and full texts were 15.70 ± 14.11 (college graduate level) and 32.11 ± 8.56 (college level) respectively. Both items indicated that the full texts were significantly more readable than the abstracts (p < 0.001). Abstract readability was not associated with any factors under investigation. ANCOVAs showed that review/meta-analysis (mean AGL ± SD: 16.0 ± 1.4) and higher impact factor significantly associated with lower readability of the trimmed full texts surveyed. Conclusion: Concerning the 100 most-cited articles in neuroimaging, the full text appears to be more readable than the abstracts. Experimental articles and methodology papers were more readable than reviews/meta-analyses. Articles published in journals with higher impact factors were less readable.

Abstract
Citation counts can identify landmark papers. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize the top-cited articles in the pediatric liver transplantation literature. A search strategy for the Scopus® database was designed for pediatric liver transplantation publications from 1945 to 2014. The 50 top-cited articles were analyzed. Author co-citation analysis was performed using VOSviewer techniques. There were 2896 articles published between 1969 and 2015. The mean citation count of the top 50 cited articles was 166 (range 95-635). There were three case reports in this top-cited list. There were 15 collaborations in this top-cited list with nine being international. The top-cited publications originated in 12 countries, with the USA and the UK contributing 31 and seven articles, respectively. There were 14 authors with four or more publications in this list. There was a single author with nine publications in the top-cited list. These top-cited papers were found in 16 journals, with three journals collectively publishing over 50% of these publications. Pediatric liver transplantation research is an evolving entity. Surgical techniques and case reports are influential articles. Collaborations at a national and international level produce highly cited articles, which are found in influential journals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The identification of the top 100 papers in ulcerative colitis (UC) using citation analysis provides a unique insight into the advancement of disease understanding and subsequent treatment innovations that have progressed over time. METHODS The Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge was used to identify the 100 most cited UC manuscripts. Title, first and senior authors, institution and department of first author, journal, country of origin, year and topic of each manuscript were analyzed. RESULTS The top 100 manuscripts were published between 1955-2012. Thirty eight percent of the manuscripts originated from the US followed by the UK (26%). Genetics was the topic with the most publications (n = 27), followed by treatment (n = 22) and immunological pathways (n = 17). Truelove had the highest amount of authorships. The institutions with the highest number of publications were St. Mark's, London and the Radcliffe Infirmary. CONCLUSION This list of highly cited papers identifies the topics and authors that have made the most impact in the study of UC over the last century. This paper provides a reference of what could be considered as the most influential UC papers and serves as a reference of what comprises a 'highly citable' manuscript for both researchers and clinicians.

Abstract
PURPOSE Bibliometric analysis highlights the key topics and studies which have led to the current understanding and treatment of a disease of interest. In this original article we analyze the 100 most cited manuscripts in the field of colorectal cancer (CRC). MATERIALS AND METHODS The Thomson Reuters Web of Science database with the search terms 'colorectal cancer,' 'colorectal cancer surgery,' 'colon cancer,' 'rectal cancer,' 'colorectal carcinoma,' 'colon carcinoma,' 'rectal carcinoma' and/or 'colonoscopy' was used to identify the manuscripts for the study. Only full length manuscripts were included. The 100 most cited papers were identified and further analyzed by topic, journal, author, year and institution. The journals' 5 year impact factor and Eigenfactor scores were recorded. RESULTS 146,833 eligible papers were returned. Within the top 100 cited manuscripts, the most studied topic was genetics in CRC (n = 41), followed by chemotherapy (n = 20) and surgical management (n = 7). The most cited paper authored by Fearon et al. (7850 citations) focused on genetic models of tumorgenesis. The NEJM published the highest number of papers (n = 23 with 42,576 citations). The country and year with the greatest number of publications were the USA (n = 62) and 2004 (n = 13) respectively. CONCLUSION The most cited manuscripts highlighted in the current work describe the genetic, immunologic, basic science and surgical techniques that have resulted in the current understanding and treatment of CRC. The majority of these works were published in high impact journals and have been cited at least 900 times each reflecting their quality and influence. This work provides a reference of what could be considered as the most influential papers in CRC and serves as a reference for researchers and clinicians as to what makes a 'citable' paper.

Abstract
Craniofacial surgery (CFS) has a rich history of collaboration with a wide variety of surgical and nonsurgical specialties. This has resulted in a large volume of publications across this spectrum of subspecialties cataloging the advancements across the field. The authors aim to analyze the characteristics of the most cited articles in CFS. A literature search was performed using the Thomson/Reuters Web of Knowledge database to identify the top 50 most cited articles in CFS. The articles were analyzed for journal distribution, total citations, year of publication, citations per year, number of authors, type of article, institution, departmental affiliation, national affiliation, and top contributors. The articles were extracted from an assortment of 21 journals. The number of citations per article ranged from 115 to 1092 (average of 185). Forty-eight percent of articles were published in the 1990s, and 22% in the 2000s. The average number of years since publication until the present time was 21.34 (range 6-45 y). The most cited article (1092 citations and 52 citations/y) was an article by McCarthy et al on human mandible lengthening via gradual distraction. Departmental distribution indicated that the majority were attributable to departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for 21 articles (42%). Twenty articles were categorized under cranial defect/bone substitutes, 12 under craniosynostosis, 7 under surgical modeling, 6 under distraction osteogenesis, and the remaining 5 under other. These articles qualitatively represent important milestones in CFS. This study affirms the potential value of "number of citations" as a meaningful metric when assessing the importance of an article within CFS.

Abstract
Objective The aim of the study was to analyze the 100 most cited publications with Turkish origin in the Web of Science Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) journals. Methods The Web of Science database was searched in terms of citations for publications originating from Turkey in ORL journals since 1983. After the identification of the 100 most cited articles, analysis was performed for the first author, institution, city, publication type, subject related to subspecialty, and journals having the most cited articles. Moreover, the number of ORL publications and citations of countries was determined in descending order using the same database. Results A total of 3948 ORL articles with Turkish origin was identified. The number of citations was 181 for the first and 28 for the last in the 100 most cited articles. As there was more than one article with 28 citations, 101 articles were analyzed. The number of the articles was 76, 22, and 3 for the university, education/research, and state hospitals, respectively. Hacettepe University, Ankara Numune Hospital, and Gazi University were the three leading institutions having the most cited articles, and Ankara was the first city. While 98 of 101 articles were original research, the number of case reports and review articles were 2 and 1, respectively. Thirty-five articles were related to otology, 23 to pediatric ORL, 20 to rhinology and head and neck surgery, and 3 to facial plastic surgery. Laryngoscope, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology were the leading 3 journals with the most cited articles coming from Turkey. The evaluation of countries revealed that Turkey was among the first 10 countries in terms of number of ORL articles but fell behind for the number of citations. Conclusion This bibliometric study is the first one regarding the contribution of Turkish authors and institutions to ORL literature. Similar studies might be periodically repeated to determine national development in the field of ORL and place of Turkey in the world.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to identify the 100 top-cited articles published on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to analyze their characteristics so as to provide information on the achievement and development in COPD research over the past decades. METHODS AND MATERIALS A comprehensive list of citation classics in COPD was generated by searching the Science Citation Index expanded database, using the keywords "COPD" or "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease" or "chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases". The 100 top-cited research papers were retrieved by reading the abstract or full text if needed. All eligible articles were read for basic information, including country of origin, organizations, article type, journals, research field, and authors. RESULTS The 100 top-cited articles on COPD were published between 1966 and 2010. The number of citations ranged from 254 to 2,164, with a mean of 450 citations for each article. These citation classics were from 32 countries, with 38 from the United States. The Imperial College London led the list of classics, with 16 papers. The 100 top-cited articles were distributed in 18 journals, with the American Journal of Respiratory, Critical Care Medicine, and Journal of the American Medical Association topping the list. Among the various fields, both respiratory system (63%) and general internal medicine (63%) were the most common fields of study for the 100 articles. CONCLUSION Our bibliometric analysis provides a historical perspective on the progress of scientific research on COPD. Articles originating from the United States and published in high-impact specialized respiratory journals are most likely to be cited in the field of COPD research.

Abstract
Spinal deformity is a condition that has been recognized for many millennia. There have been major advances in the treatment of spinal deformity in recent years and studies outlining new ideas can inspire others to further advance the speciality. The number of citations a paper receives may indicate the influence of that paper. It is therefore important that we evaluate and analyze the most cited works in our field. The aim of this study is to identify the 100 most cited papers relevant to spinal deformity surgery in the literature. A search through the Thomson Reuters Web of Science™ for citations related to spinal deformity surgery was performed. The number of citations, mean citation number (total number citations/years since publication), journal, authors, year of publication and country of origin of the top 100 papers was recorded. The top 100 papers were cited a combined 17,646 times, ranging from 453 to 112. The majority of papers originated from the United States (71) and were published in 20 different journals. The decade 1990-1999 was the most prolific, with 36 of the 100 papers published during this time. Papers pertaining to the management of scoliosis (49) were the most common. This study identifies the top 100 most cited papers in the field of spinal deformity surgery. While citation is not a specific marker of the scientific quality of a paper, it is a surrogate for the influence a paper has had on the orthopedic community. This list of papers provides an invaluable resource for both those in training and those actively practicing and involved in the further development of spinal deformity surgery.
