Comparison of the effects of Benson relaxation technique and nature sounds on pain, anxiety, and body image in burn-injured patients admitted to the burn ICU: A single-blind randomized clinical trial

The effect of listening to the sound of running water on pain and anxiety experienced during cannulation by hemodialysis patients: A randomized, controlled, open-label study

INTRODUCTION

This study was conducted to determine the effect of the sound of running water, which we had not previously encountered being used in dialysis patients, on invasive pain and anxiety experienced during cannulation.

METHODS

The research was conducted as a randomized, controlled study. A descriptive form, a VAS pain scale, and state-trait anxiety scales were used as a data collection form. The data were analyzed on SPSS version 22.00 for Windows software. The independent groups t-test was applied to compare descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, number, and percentage in independent groups, while categorical data were compared using the chi-square test. The effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable was tested using linear regression analysis. p values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

The study was completed with 32 experimental and 33 control group patients. There was no significant difference in pre-intervention pain and anxiety between the groups. The pain levels of the patients after the first and 12th cannulations were significantly lower in the experimental group (p < 0.05). State and trait anxiety levels were also significantly lower in the experimental group at the 12th session (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

We conclude that the sound of running water has a significant positive effect on pain and anxiety experienced during cannulation by dialysis patients. We recommend that clinicians apply such a simple method as listening to the sound of running water for reducing pain and anxiety during invasive procedures.

Status and Influencing Factors of Body Image Disturbance in Patients With Hemifacial Spasm: A Quantitative and Qualitative Study

OBJECTIVE

Patients diagnosed with hemifacial spasm (HFS) often experience significant facial changes that affect their body image and potentially have a negative impact on their physical and psychological well-being. This study therefore seeks to identify the current state of body image of Chinese patients with HFS, analyze the factors that influence it, and further explore their experiences based on their level of body image disturbance (BID) using a mixed methods approach.

METHODS

A mixed-methods study was conducted between January 2021 and June 2023. Phase I encompassed the completion of questionnaires by 124 participants. Subsequently, in Phase II, in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 individuals selected from Phase I to gain deeper insights into their specific experiences with BID.

RESULTS

Patients afflicted with HFS achieved Body Image Scale scores 9.00 (0.00, 12.00). Age, anxiety, depression, and fear of negative evaluation were identified as predictors of exacerbated BID (P < 0.05). Qualitative research predominantly centered on 2 primary themes: the experiences and outward manifestations of BID in HFS patients. These individuals expressed dissatisfaction with their appearance, apprehensions about being the focus of attention, and instances of social avoidance.

CONCLUSIONS

Owing to varying degrees of anxiety, depression, and apprehension about external evaluation, individuals grappling with HFS are susceptible to experiencing BID. Consequently, when devising interventions, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the patient's condition and implement targeted measures aimed at ameliorating body image, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of life for the patient.

The effect of Benson relaxation technique on cancer patients: a systematic review

PURPOSE

Although many studies have investigated the effect of this method on cancer patients, no review of the available literature has been done. So, a literature review is conducted to evaluate all published literature on the Benson relaxation technique in cancer patients.

METHODS

A systematic literature search was conducted. A systematic search of online electronic databases including PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus Web of Science, PsycINFO, and EMBASE was performed using keywords extracted from Medical Subject Headings such as "Benson Relaxation Technique," "Cancer Patients," "Malignancy," and "Neoplasia" from the beginning to April 27, 2023. A total of 810 publications were assessed for relevance by title and abstract. The remaining 31 articles were examined using inclusion criteria for all Persian and English-language publications that evaluate the effectiveness of the Benson relaxation technique on cancer patients. We did not have gray literature in our review. The methodological quality of the included studies was appraised using specific checklists.

RESULTS

Finally, nine studies were included in this systematic review. Studies on breast cancer patients showed improvement in fatigue, nausea, vomiting, pain, shortness of breath, insomnia, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, treatment side effects, breast symptoms, arm symptoms, worry about hair loss, and scores of hope. Two studies were conducted among cervical cancer patients that showed a decrease in anxiety scores and an improvement in the quality of sleep. Another study on gastric cancer patients showed decreased Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching scores.

CONCLUSION

Overall, this systematic review showed that the Benson relaxation method could improve sleep quality, appetite, anxiety, and quality of life. Therefore, using the Benson relaxation technique is suggested to improve health-related outcomes in cancer patients.
