Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with a predilection for pediatric patients, known for its rapid growth and MYC oncogene-associated chromosomal translocations. CASE PRESENTATION A 33-year-old male presented with a perineal ulcerated wound, initially misdiagnosed as a musculoskeletal injury. Imaging and histopathological analysis eventually confirmed BL, leading to the initiation of high-dose chemotherapy. CLINICAL DISCUSSION BL is characterized by its rapid growth, typically as masses in the abdomen or jaw. Nevertheless, atypical presentations can lead to diagnostic delays, underscoring the importance of considering BL even in the absence of classic symptoms. Swift recognition and accurate diagnosis are critical for initiating timely chemotherapy. Comprehensive clinical evaluation, advanced imaging, and histopathological analysis are pivotal in confirming the diagnosis. CONCLUSION This unique case of BL with a perineal mass presentation emphasizes the necessity of considering BL as a potential diagnosis in atypical cases, highlighting the importance of early recognition and appropriate therapeutic strategies. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the potential for unusual BL presentations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gene expression profiling yields quantitative data on gene expression used to create prognostic models that accurately predict patient outcome in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Often, data are analyzed with genes classified by whether they fall above or below the median expression level. We sought to determine whether examining multiple cut-points might be a more powerful technique to investigate the association of gene expression with outcome. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We explored gene expression profiling data using variable cut-point analysis for 36 genes with reported prognostic value in DLBCL. We plotted two-group survival logrank test statistics against corresponding cut-points of the gene expression levels and smooth estimates of the hazard ratio of death versus gene expression levels. To facilitate comparisons we also standardized the expression of each of the genes by the fraction of patients that would be identified by any cut-point. A multiple comparison adjusted permutation p-value identified 3 different patterns of significance: 1) genes with significant cut-point points below the median, whose loss is associated with poor outcome (e.g. HLA-DR); 2) genes with significant cut-points above the median, whose over-expression is associated with poor outcome (e.g. CCND2); and 3) genes with significant cut-points on either side of the median, (e.g. extracellular molecules such as FN1). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE Variable cut-point analysis with permutation p-value calculation can be used to identify significant genes that would not otherwise be identified with median cut-points and may suggest biological patterns of gene effects.

Abstract
It has long been recognized that the border between classical Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) and classical diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is hard to determine. Instead, both classical lymphoma entities seem to be the extreme ends of a spectrum of diseases that contains a group of lymphomas characterized predominately by the fact that they are hard to assign to the one or the other group. This gray zone has been recently termed “lymphoma, unclassifiable, with features intermediate between DLBCL and BL” by the updated WHO classification. The term “intermediate” resembles that from a recent gene-expression study of mature aggressive B-cell lymphomas, although, notably, it is used differently. Intermediate lymphomas according to the WHO classification clearly are a temporary container of different biologic subtypes of aggressive lymphoma, from which several might be associated with an unfavorable clinical outcome. The present review aims at describing the morphologic, clinical, and biologic heterogeneity of the intermediate lymphomas and, moreover, attempts to propose testable subgroups based on age and presence of genetic aberrations.

Abstract
Genetics of susceptibility to radiation-induced hematopoietic neoplasms and somatic chromosomal aberrations were analyzed in 305 backcross (CcS-17xCcS-2)xCcS-2 mice of two CcS/Dem recombinant congenic strains. Irradiated CcS-2 mice were previously shown to exhibit high frequency of myeloid neoplasms whereas irradiated CcS-17 mice were susceptible to T-cell lymphomas. Mice were exposed to four whole-body irradiation doses of 1.7 Gy at one week intervals, which resulted in 139 hematopoietic neoplasms. The hematopoietic neoplasms were classified according to the Bethesda proposals for classification of lymphoid and nonlymphoid hematopoietic neoplasms in mice. Genotyping of mice with 24 microsatellite markers and subsequent statistical analysis indicated linkage of the radiation induced T-lymphomas to two loci on chromosome 10 (D10Mit134) and chromosome 12 (D12Mit52). T-lymphoma susceptibility appeared to be linked to D10Mit134 in a sex dependent way. In contrast, the myeloid-granulocytic leukemias susceptibility is linked to combined effects of chromosome 5 (D5Mit179) and 16 (D16Mit34). Cytogenetic analysis was performed according to the standard G-bands procedure and confirmed using FISH method. We found non-random numerical and structural chromosomal changes in lymphoid neoplasms. Cytogenetic analysis indicated chromosomal aberrations presumably associated with lymphomagenesis, no specific cancer-related rearrangements were observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Translocations involving the MYC gene and increased MYC mRNA levels are associated with poor outcome in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. However, the presence of increased MYC gene copy number and/or polysomy of chromosome 8 have not been previously described. DESIGN AND METHODS Utilizing dual color chromogenic in situ hybridization, we investigated MYC gene copy and chromosome 8 centromere numbers in 52 cases of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Cases were divided into those with "increased" or "not increased" MYC gene copy number for comparison with MYC mRNA levels, Ki-67 values, and survival. RESULTS Increased MYC gene copy number was present in 38% of cases. Overall, the average MYC mRNA level was 2398 (range, 342 - 9783) and the percentage of nuclei positive for Ki-67 was 57.5% (range, 20-87%). Within the group with increased MYC copy number, the MYC mRNA values ranged from 816 to 5912 (average, 2843) and the Ki-67 values ranged from 23% to 83% (average, 57%). Within the group with not increased MYC copy number, MYC mRNA values ranged from 342 to 9783 (average, 2118) and the Ki-67 values ranged from 20% to 87% (average, 58%). There was a statistically significant relationship between increased MYC gene copy number and increased MYC mRNA (P=0.034) and a trend toward a relationship between increased mRNA and higher Ki-67 values. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report that low level copy number increases are common in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and that these changes correlate with MYC mRNA in a statistically significant manner. MYC copy number changes are an additional possible molecular mechanism that may result in increased mRNA and, likely, high proliferation and poor outcome.

Abstract
This study reports on the cytogenetic features of a novel case of pediatric Burkitt-like lymphoma (BLL), that adds to the three published. Four groups of cytogenetic abnormalities were detected in the present case: (1) imbalances shared by most germinal center (GC) derived B-cell tumors including BLL (+1q, -6q, -8p, +8q24 and +11); (2) imbalances already reported in adult but not in pediatric BLL cases and shared with most GC B-cell tumors (+7, -9p, -9q, +12q, -13q, +17, +19, -3 and -4); (3) imbalances already reported in pediatric but not in adult BLL cases and shared with some GC B-cell tumors (-2q); and (4) imbalances never described before in pediatric or adult BLL, but present in different GC B-cell tumors (-6p, -1p and -18q). In view of the paucity of pediatric BLL cases published, this report adds novel, relevant information on the molecular cytogenetic features of this rare tumor.

Abstract
Burkitt's lymphoma is a poorly differentiated rare and aggressive type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This article reports the case of a male child aged seven years, who was examined at the Odontopediatric Clinic of the UFRN Dentistry Department. The patient presented a tumor in the premolar region of the mandible; teeth were mobile in this region. Radiology revealed a diffuse radioluscent area which was diagnosed histopathologically as Burkitt's lymphoma. The patient was treated with polychemotherapy; complete remission of the disease was attained.

Abstract
O linfoma de Burkitt é um raro e agressivo tipo de linfoma não-Hodgkin pobremente diferenciado. O presente relato trata de uma criança do sexo masculino, com sete anos de idade, que foi examinada na Clínica de Odontopediatria do Departamento de Odontologia da UFRN, exibindo uma massa tumoral na região de pré-molares mandibulares com mobilidade dentária. O exame radiográfico revelou uma área radiolúcida difusa e o diagnóstico histopatológico foi de linfoma de Burkitt. O paciente foi tratado por poliquimioterapia e obteve completa remissão da patologia.

Abstract
Cytogenetic analysis is now a routine part of the diagnosis and management of a significant number of lymphoid malignancies. Whilst conventional cytogenetics remains the most comprehensive method for assessing chromosome abnormalities, the technical difficulties associated with conventional cytogenetics in most lymphomas has resulted in increased use of fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) to identify specific abnormalities that are useful in either the diagnosis or management of these disorders. The finding of one of the Burkitt's translocations is of major importance in the diagnosis of Burkitt's and Burkitt's-like lymphomas, whereas the t(14;18), although seen in most follicular lymphomas (FL), is not usually required to make a diagnosis. Thus, whilst cytogenetics may be of interest in FL, it is not an essential part of the diagnostic work-up. Conventional cytogenetics may be useful for identifying markers of resistance to Helicobacter pylori therapy in MALT lymphomas. In disorders such as Hodgkin lymphoma, hairy cell leukaemia and lymphoplasmacytoid lymphoma, although many cytogenetic abnormalities have been observed, no consistent or specific abnormalities have been identified and so, at this point in our knowledge of the genetics of these disorders, cytogenetics cannot be considered a useful test for either diagnosis or prognosis. In contrast, the diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma is now dependent upon the identification of the 11;14 translocation that results in cyclin D1 up-regulation. It is widely acknowledged that FISH is the most consistently useful test to identify the juxtaposition of the CCND1 and IGH genes in mantle cell lymphoma and is regarded as the 'gold standard'. FISH also has a role in identifying genetic abnormalities of prognostic significance in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Given the wealth of genetic and cytogenetic abnormalities that are continuing to be found in chronic lymphoid malignancies, it will be some time before the optimal use of both conventional cytogenetics and FISH is established in the diagnosis and management of lymphomas.
