Physicochemical properties of heat-moisture treated, sodium stearate complexed starch: The effect of sodium stearate concentration

Amylose‑sodium stearate (SS) complexes (2, 5 and 8%) in heat-moisture treated potato starch (HPS) were evaluated for their physicochemical properties. Based on the DSC thermograms, the amylose - SS complexes were successfully formed with high thermal stability, indicated by a melt temperature (T_peak) of ≥ 112 °C for type I and ≥125 °C for type II complexes. Addition of 2% SS resulted in a single endothermal peak of the complexes, while 5 and 8% led to the formation of type I and II complexes with much higher enthalpy (ΔH) values. The XRD curve confirmed that the complexes were successfully formed. The pasting temperature increased from 66 °C for native to 91 °C for HPS145 complexed starch with 5% SS. Furthermore, the swelling power could be largely decreased, and the granular structure preserved. In addition, the inclusion complexation with SS on (HPS) succesfully improved the cook stabiliy.

A Comprehensive Review on Corn Starch-Based Nanomaterials: Properties, Simulations, and Applications

Corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the major food crops, and it is considered to be a very distinctive plant, since it is able to produce a large amount of the natural polymer of starch through its capacity to utilize large amounts of sunlight. Corn starch is used in a wide range of products and applications. In recent years, the use of nanotechnology for applications in the food industry has become more apparent; it has been used for protecting against biological and chemical deterioration, increasing bioavailability, and enhancing physical properties, among other functions. However, the high cost of nanotechnology can make it difficult for its application on a commercial scale. As a biodegradable natural polymer, corn starch is a great alternative for the production of nanomaterials. Therefore, the search for alternative materials to be used in nanotechnology has been studied. This review has discussed in detail the properties, simulations, and wide range of applications of corn starch-based nanomaterials.

New Binary Blends of Ethylene-co-n-butyl Acrylate (EBA) Copolymer and Low Molecular Weight Rosin Ester Resin with Potential as Pressure Sensitive Adhesives

For improving the adhesion property of ethylene-co-n-butyl acrylate copolymer (EBA) at ambient temperature, binary blends of EBA with 27 wt% n-butyl acrylate and different amounts (20–62 wt%) of low molecular weight hydrogenated glycerol rosin ester (ECH) resin have been prepared. The addition of glycerol rosin ester resin decreased the crystallinity and size of the ethylene domains of the EBA copolymer. The addition of up to 50 wt% (100 phr) ECH resin improved the compatibility with the EBA copolymer, whereas when more than 50 wt% (100 phr) ECH resin was added, the compatibility of the blends did not change but the viscoelastic properties were noticeably decreased. Furthermore, the compatibility was noticeably improved by adding only 20 wt% ECH resin although the best compromise between compatibility and viscoelasticity corresponded to the binary blend made with 43 wt% ECH resin. The EBA copolymer + ECH resin blends showed high tack (initial adhesion) at 25 °C and some of them even at 5 °C, and they have adequate 180° peel strength both to polar (polyethylene terephthalate-PET) and nonpolar (polypropylene-PP) substrate. Furthermore, all EBA copolymer + ECH resin blends showed high shear strength at 25 °C. Finally, the blend with 43 wt% ECH resin showed excellent pressure sensitive adhesive property exhibiting excellent creep, high tack, high 180° peel strength, and high single lap-shear strength.

Graphene Oxide Filled Lignin/Starch Polymer Bionanocomposite: Structural, Physical, and Mechanical Studies

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was investigated as a potential nanoreinforcing agent in starch/lignin (ST/L) biopolymer matrix. Bionanocomposite films based on ST/L blend matrix and GO were prepared by solution-casting technique of the corresponding film-forming solution. The structures, morphologies, and properties of bionanocomposite films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), SEM, and tensile tests. The experimental results showed that content of GO have a significant influence on the mechanical properties of the produced films. The results revealed that the interfacial interaction formed in the bionanocomposite films improved the compatibility between GO fillers and ST/L matrix. The addition of GO also reduced moisture uptake (Mu) and water vapor permeability of ST/L blend film. In addition, TGA showed that the thermal stability of bionanocomposite films was better than that of neat starch film. These findings confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed approach to produce biodegradable films with enhanced properties, which may be used in packaging applications.

New blends of ethylene-butyl acrylate copolymers with thermoplastic starch. Characterization and bacterial biodegradation

Ethylene-butyl acrylate copolymer (EBA) with 13% of butyl acrylate content was used to produce blends with 10, 30 and 60% of thermoplastic starch (TPS) plasticized with glycerol. Ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) was used as compatibilizer at 20% content with respect to EBA. The blends were characterized by X-ray diffraction, ATR-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), water-Contact Angle measurements (CA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Stress-strain mechanical tests. Initiated autoxidation of the polymer blends was studied by chemiluminescence (CL) confirming that the presence of the polyolefin-TPS interphase did not substantially affect the oxidative thermostability of the materials. Three bacterial species have been isolated from the blend films buried in soil and identified as Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus borstelensis and Bacillus licheniformis. Biodegradation of the blends (28days at 45°C) was evaluated by carbon dioxide measurement using the indirect impedance technique.
