Novel cationic-modified salep as an efficient flocculating agent for settling of cement slurries

Progress of improving waste activated sludge dewaterability: Influence factors, conditioning technologies and implications and perspectives

Large amounts of waste activated sludge (WAS) as a by-product generated from the biological treatment in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is of high moisture content (MC), organic pollutants, heavy metals and pathogenic bacteria, it may cause serious environmental ecological risk without appropriate disposal. More than one half of the total operation cost is accounted for sludge disposal in a WWTP. Dewatering is an essential and important step during the sludge treatment and disposal process for it could efficiently reduce its volume, and be beneficial to the subsequent treatment and disposal of sludge. However, sludge should be conditioned before mechanical dewatering because of its high hydrophilicity. In this work, it presented a comprehensive review on sludge dewatering including summarizing the dewaterability measurement indexes, affecting factors, conditioning technologies, the improvement mechanisms. Finally, based on the eventual disposal and low carbon emission target, the implications and perspectives development of sludge conditioning were discussed. Based on the above discussion, there is no unified theoretical insight of the improvement mechanism of sludge dewaterability. In addition, the relationship between the microstructure of organic matters in sludge floc and the dewaterability should be deepened. Especially, how to choose the optimal conditioning technology for sludge dewatering lies in the physical and chemical properties of sludge, however, the carbon emission of the conditioning and dewatering process also needs to be considered. Accordingly, green, low-cost and organic conditioning agents are the direction of future research, and the establishment of automatic operating system and real-time evaluation index system is the key challenge.

Preparation and characterization of chemically cross-linked zwitterionic copolymer hydrogel for direct dye and toxic trace metal removal from aqueous medium

In this work, a zwitterionic copolymer hydrogel with adsorption affinity toward anionic dye and cationic trace metal was prepared by a free radical copolymerization of cationic ([3-(methacryloylamino)propyl] trimethylammonium chloride (MPTC)) and anionic (sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate (SVBS)) monomers. Bis[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] phosphate was used as a cross-linker and its effect on the adsorption properties of the prepared hydrogel was evaluated. The prepared materials were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, and N₂ adsorption at 77 K analysis. FTIR and EDX analysis demonstrated the successful preparation of poly(MPTC-co-VBS). XRD and SEM analysis showed that the poly (MPTC-co-VBS) is amorphous and has quasi-honeycomb morphology with large pores. Increasing the amount of the cross-linker enhanced the adsorption of direct blue 71 dye (DB71) and Pb(II) ions. The highest removal of DB71 and Pb(II) was achieved after 2 h using 1.5 g/L of poly(MPTC-co-VBS); however, the optimum solution pH was 3 for DB71 and 5 for Pb(II). The kinetics and isotherm studies illustrated that the surface of poly(MPTC-co-VBS) is heterogenous with small-sized homogenous pitches and the DB71 and Pb(II) adsorption onto poly(MPTC-co-VBS) is favorable. Finally, poly(MPTC-co-VBS) is more efficient in removing DB71 and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions than many other reported adsorbents.

Self-Assembly Anchored Cationic Copolymer Interfaces for Applying the Control of Counterion-Induced Bacteria Killing/Release Procedure

In recent years, daily hygiene and disease control issues have received increasing attention, especially the raging epidemics caused by the spread of deadly viruses. The construction of the interface of new polymer materials is focused on, which can provide a cyclic operation process for the killing and releasing of bacteria, and perform repeated regeneration, which is of great significance for the development of advanced medical biomaterials. In order to explore the basic physical phenomena of bacterial attachment and detachment on the polymer material interface by different amine groups, this study plans to synthesize four different butyl methacrylate (BMA)-based cationic copolymers with primary, ternary, and quaternary amine groups, and compare their effects on bactericidal efficiency. Since BMA can generate strong hydrophobic interactions with the benzene ring structure, this study used a polystyrene substrate to realize a self-assembled cationic copolymer interface for controlling the counterion-induced bacterial killing/release process. Furthermore, negatively charged ions are introduced to induce changes in the hydration capability of water molecules and control the subsequent bacterial detachment function. In this study, possible directions to answer and clarify the above concepts are proposed, and there is a basic reference principle that can lead to research work in macromolecular bioscience fields.

Research Progress on Typical Quaternary Ammonium Salt Polymers

Quaternary ammonium salt polymers, a kind of polyelectrolyte with a quaternary ammonium group, are widely used in traditional and emerging industries due to their good water-solubility, adjustable cationicity and molecular weight, high efficiency and nontoxicity. In this paper, firstly, the properties and several synthesis methods of typical quaternary ammonium salt monomers were introduced. Secondly, the research progress on the synthesis of polymers was summarized from the perspective of obtaining products with high molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution and high monomer conversion, and special functional polymers. Thirdly, the relationships between the structures and properties of the polymer were analyzed from the perspectives of molecular weight, charge density, structural stability, and microstructural regulation of the polymer chain unit. Fourthly, typical examples of quaternary ammonium salt polymers in the application fields of water treatment, daily chemicals, petroleum exploitation, papermaking, and textile printing and dyeing were listed. Finally, constructive suggestions were put forward on developing quaternary ammonium salt polymers with high molecular weights, strengthening the research on the relationships between the structures and their properties and pinpointing relevant application fields.

Application of composite degradable modified starch-based flocculant on dewatering and recycling properties

Sludge dewatering is an important step for wastewater treatment. Composite degradable flocculant (CDF) was prepared by cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) grafting onto modified starch with a novel initiator, and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The microstructure of flocculated sludge was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The study investigated the properties of CDF compared to PAM, which showed that the prepared CDF exhibited a highly effective flocculation on sludge dewatering, a higher transmittance and chemical oxygen demand removal rate, and a lower value of effluent ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus. The fermentation process was also analyzed by testing the performance of dewatered sludge (temperature, pH, ammonia nitrogen, E4/E6 (humic acid absorbance at 465 nm (E4) and 665 nm (E6))). The dehydrated sludge with CDF could be easily compressed into cakes by belt-filter for easy transportation and storage. With the continuous addition of CDF and PAM, the corresponding index of capillary suction time (CST) increased. Moreover, the total value of CST with CDF was low, showing a good dewaterability. In addition, the sludge index of pumping time and moisture content with CDF were low in contrast with PAM. Fermentation experiments demonstrated that sludge with CDF had a comparatively high temperature and low value of E4/E6. Such novel CDF shows enormous potential in wastewater treatment and sludge fermentation.

Critical review on dewatering of sewage sludge: Influential mechanism, conditioning technologies and implications to sludge re-utilizations

Sewage sludge (mainly composed of excessive bio-sludge) is an inevitable by-product of biological wastewater treatment process and contains various toxic substances, such as pathogens, heavy metals, and organic contaminants. The production of sewage sludge may cause serious pollution risks without appropriate disposals. As the essential step of sludge treatment, dewatering plays significant roles in minimizing the sludge volume, facilitating the transportation, increasing the calorific value and even reducing the leachate production in landfill sites. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the issues related to dewatering of sewage sludge. Section 1 starts with the environmental implications of sludge dewatering. Section 2 deals with the concepts and challenges about differentiation of bound water fractions, and also reviews the recent progress of in-situ visualization of water occurrence states in bio-flocs. Section 3 discusses about how various physiochemical properties influence the sludge dewaterability, and the insufficiency in in-situ micro-characterization of sludge constituents is pointed out. Section 4 reviews the existing conditioning technologies for sludge dewaterability improvement, and the advantages/disadvantages of each technology in terms of applicable occasions, material consumption, energy consumption and environmental impacts are evaluated. The last section (section 5) specifically analyzes the feasibility of integrating sludge dewatering and re-utilization, and raises attention to the potential environmental risks of dewatering conditioning. Based on the above discussion, we propose that a unified theory for sludge dewaterability improvement remains to be established. Especially, how the molecular structures of sludge compositions affect the solid-water interface behavior requires to be deepened, which will further unravel the mechanism behind strong water-holding capacities of bio-flocs. Additionally, we believe that the key challenges for sludge dewatering is how to select the appropriate conditioning technique according to the physiochemical properties of target sludge. The reliable indicators for real-time control of conditioning operations are still deficient, e.g., dynamic dosage control of conditioning chemicals. Accordingly, the potential environmental risks of excessive conditioning chemicals should be taken into more consideration.

Dynamic mechanical spectra of salep and casein mixtures

In this study, a glucomannan based salep and casein were mixed in a solution at different concentrations (0-0.75% salep and 0-3.0% casein) according to the central composite rotatable design and their color, steady shear and dynamic shear rheological properties were characterized. All studied parameters were affected by the salep and casein levels significantly. Salep increased the apparent viscosity, consistency coefficient, storage modulus and complex modulus of the solution compared to casein and an interaction was observed between the salep and casein which shows a significant increasing effect on the parameters. Frequency dependency increased with the increase of casein in the mixtures. Regression equations having quite high coefficients of determination were constructed for the estimation of studied parameter levels. Optimization performed with desirability function showed that the maximum levels for the rheological parameters could be achieved by more increment of salep level in the solutions because sole effect of casein on the rheological parameters was limited compared to salep.

Delivery of Doxorubicin Using Double-Layered Core-Shell Nanocarrier Based on Magnetic Fe3O4 Core and Salep Shells

Herein, we developed a magnetic drug delivery system based on magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles with double shells of modified salep polysaccharide for the delivery of doxorubicin (Dox). The drug-loaded nanocarrier was synthesized in an easy way, and large amounts of drug molecules were loaded into the nanocarrier. The drug-loaded nanocarrier showed excellent pH responsibility in vitro, and large amounts of Dox were released at lower pH (60% release), whereas the nanocarrier was stable at neutral pH. The hemolysis assay results showed that the nanocarrier has negligible hemolytic effects on human red blood cells and showed good biocompatibility. Moreover, the result of coagulation assays showed that the nanocarrier was not active in any coagulation pathways. Cytotoxicity assays of nanocarrier and drug-loaded nanocarrier toward HeLa cells demonstrated that the nanocarrier has negligible toxicity, whereas the drug-loaded nanocarrier kills more than 90% of cells during 48 h. The flow cytometry analysis also showed that the uptake of drug-loaded nanocarrier into the cancerous cells is time-dependent and higher concentrations of drug internalized into the cells at longer incubation time. On the basis of the results, we suggest that the present nanocarrier can be applicable for in vivo drug delivery as an easy-made and cheap nanocarrier.

Coagulation/flocculation in dewatering of sludge: A review

Sludge disposal is an integral part of wastewater treatment systems, and its cost usually accounts for more than half of the total operation cost. Sludge disposal technology is facing challenges and opportunities simultaneously and can still be improved. Sludge dewatering is an essential process in sludge disposal, and it is important for the effective reduction of the final processing cost. Coagulation/flocculation is a relatively mature, cost-effective, user-friendly sludge dewatering technology. In this work, coagulation/flocculation and their combinations with other pretreatments, including dewatering mechanisms, are reviewed. Various coagulants/flocculants used in sludge dewatering, including inorganic coagulants, organic synthetic and natural polymeric flocculants, and bioflocculants, are introduced in detail because coagulants/flocculants are the key in coagulation/flocculation. The different factors that influence the dewatering performance of these coagulants/flocculants are also presented briefly. Moreover, aiming at the complicated composition of sludge and its treatment difficulty, the prospects and technical developments of coagulation/flocculation in sludge dewatering are discussed.

The investigation of the specific behavior of a cationic block structure and its excellent flocculation performance in high-turbidity water treatment

The fabrication of a cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) with high efficiency and economy has been highly desired in the field of high-turbidity water treatment. This study introduced an ultrasound (US)-initiated template polymerization (UTP) method to develop a novel cationic templated polyacrylamide (TPAA) with a microblock structure. TPAA was prepared using acrylamide (AM) and sodium (3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride (ATAC) as the monomers and sodium polyacrylate (NaPAA) as the template. Factors that affected polymerization such as the ultrasound power, ultrasound time, initiator concentration, pH, and m_AM : m_ATAC and n_NaPAA : n_ATAC values were investigated. The properties of the polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated the successful formation of a cationic microblock structure in TPAA. In addition, TPAA displayed favorable thermal decomposition properties and a rough and coarse surface morphology, as shown by analyses using TGA and SEM, respectively. Moreover, a zip (type I) template polymerization mechanism was identified via analyses of the association constant (K_M), conversion (C_v) and polymerization rate (R_p). The flocculation performance of the templated copolymer TPAA was evaluated by treating high-turbidity water. According to the results for the zeta potentials and FTIR spectra of the generated flocs, it was indicated that the cationic microblocks in the templated copolymer could greatly enhance its charge neutralization, patching and bridging ability, and therefore excellent flocculation performance (residual turbidity: 5.8 NTU, D_f: 1.89, floc size d₅₀: 608.404 μm and floc kinetic: 15.86 × 10⁻⁴ s⁻¹) for treating high-turbidity water was achieved.

Effect of the Cationic Block Structure on the Characteristics of Sludge Flocs Formed by Charge Neutralization and Patching

In this study, a template copolymer (TPAA) of (3-Acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride (AATPAC) and acrylamide (AM) was successfully synthesized though ultrasonic-initiated template copolymerization (UTP), using sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) as a template. TPAA was characterized by an evident cationic microblock structure which was observed through the analyses of the reactivity ratio, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ¹H (¹³C) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H (¹³C) NMR), and thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC). The introduction of the template could improve the monomer (AATPAC) reactivity ratio and increase the length and amount of AATPAC segments. This novel cationic microblock structure extremely enhanced the ability of charge neutralization, patching, and bridging, thus improving the activated sludge flocculation performance. The experiments of floc formation, breakage, and regrowth revealed that the cationic microblock structure in the copolymer resulted in large and compact flocs, and these flocs had a rapid regrowth when broken. Finally, the larger and more compact flocs contributed to the formation of more channels and voids, and therefore the specific resistance to filtration (SRF) reached a minimum.

UV-initiated template copolymerization of AM and MAPTAC: Microblock structure, copolymerization mechanism, and flocculation performance

Flocculation as the core technology of sludge pretreatment can improve the dewatering performance of sludge that enables to reduce the cost of sludge transportation and the subsequent disposal costs. Therefore, synthesis of high-efficiency and economic flocculant is remarkably desired in this field. This study presents a cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) flocculant with microblock structure synthesized through ultraviolet (UV)-initiated template copolymerization by using acrylamide (AM) and methacrylamido propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) as monomers, sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) as template, and 2,2'-azobis [2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl) propane] dihydrochloride (VA-044) as photoinitiator. The microblock structure of the CPAM was observed through nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. Furthermore, thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC) analysis was used to evaluate its thermal decomposition property. The copolymerization mechanism was investigated through the determination of the binding constant M_K and study on polymerization kinetics. Results showed that the copolymerization was conducted in accordance with the I (ZIP) template polymerization mechanism, and revealed the coexistence of bimolecular termination free-radical reaction and mono-radical termination in the polymerization process. Results of sludge dewatering tests indicated the superior flocculation performance of microblock flocculant than random distributed CPAM. The residual turbidity, filter cake moisture content, and specific resistance to filtration reached 9.37 NTU, 68.01%, and 6.24 (10¹² m kg^-1), respectively, at 40 mg L^-1 of template poly(AM-MAPTAC) and pH 6.0. Furthermore, all flocculant except commercial CPAM showed a wide scope of pH application.

Synthesis, properties and performance of organic polymers employed in flocculation applications

Recent developments on the synthesis and flocculation efficiency of several non-ionic, cationic, anionic and amphoteric polymers are presented and summarised.

Production of cationic xylan-METAC copolymer as a flocculant for textile industry

Xylan is a part of hemicelluloses of woody materials and can be converted to value-added products such as flocculants for the textile industry. To assess the production of flocculants from hemicelluloses of woody materials, xylan was selected as a model and rendered cationic via copolymerization. In this study, the copolymerization reaction of xylan and [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride (METAC) was optimized. The optimum parameters were 3mol/mol METAC/xylose, 3h reaction time, 80°C reaction temperature, pH 7 and 25g/L xylan concentration. The copolymer was characterized by a charge density analyzer, viscometer, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), light scattering instrument, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and an elemental analyzer. The application of the cationic xylan copolymer as a flocculant to decolorize the simulated reactive orange 16 azo-dye wastewater was evaluated. The results confirmed that, by having 160mg/L xylan-METAC concentration in the dye solution with the concentration of 100mg/L, 97.8% of dye could be removed.

Synthesis of a novel supermagnetic iron oxide nanocomposite hydrogel based on graft copolymerization of poly((2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) onto salep for controlled release of drug

In this research, a novel supermagnetic iron oxide nanocomposite hydrogel was prepared using simultaneous in situ formation of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) and three-dimensional cross-linked polymer networks based on graft copolymerization of poly((2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMA) onto salep (PDMA-g-salep). The prepared ION-PDMA-g-salep hydrogel was systematically characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDAX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). In addition, the ION-PDMA-g-salep hydrogel exhibits favorable swelling properties that are sensitive to temperature, pH, and external magnetic field (EMF). The drug release behavior of the prepared hydrogel under EMF, different temperatures and pHs was also studied for the evaluation of the release mechanism and determination of diffusion coefficients. Finally, the antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity studies of the prepared hydrogel were examined. These results suggested that the ION-PDMA-g-salep hydrogel could be a promising candidate for biological dressing applications.
