Rational Design of MIL-68(In) Derived Multiple Sulfides with Well Confined Quantum Dots and the Promoted Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Quantum dots (QDs) of metal sulfides were proven to be excellent cocatalysts in visible-light-driven photocatalytic reactions. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) possess a 3D porous channel that effectively confines small QDs and preserves their high catalytic activity by preventing their aggregation. In order to precisely construct the ternary metal sulfides of ZnS/ZnIn2S4/In2S3 with well-maintained Zn-AgInS2 (ZAIS) QDs, an in situ sulfurization combining a subsequent Zn(II)-exchange strategy was employed in this work. First, the ZAIS QDs were incorporated into MIL-68(In), which were then used as the precursors to precisely construct the ternary metal sulfides of ZnS/ZnIn2S4/In2S3 with well maintained ZAIS QDs through an in situ sulfurization combining subsequent Zn(II)-exchange strategy. When the optimized nanocomposites (QDs@M-t-Zn, where t is the sulfurization time) were applied in visible light-induced photocatalytic hydrogen generation, the resulting QDs@M-24h-Zn showed a significantly improved hydrogen evolution rate of 448.96 μmol g-1 h-1, which values are clearly higher than those of MIL-68(In), QDs@MIL-68(In), and M-24h-Zn without the presence of ZAIS QDs. To elucidate the increased photocatalytic mechanism, the optical patterns and the batch electrochemical investigations were combined. It has been discovered that the matching band potentials and the close contact heterojunction enhance interface charge transfer, which in turn encourages photocatalytic hydrogen production. This study demonstrates the well-thought-out design of the uniform confinement architecture inherited from MOF QD-assisted multinary metal sulfides photocatalysts.

Rapid flotation of Microcystis wesenbergii mediated by high light exposure: implications for surface scum formation and cyanobacterial species succession

Increasing occurrences of Microcystis surface scum have been observed in the context of global climate change and the increase in anthropogenic pollution, causing deteriorating water quality in aquatic ecosystems. Previous studies on scum formation mainly focus on the buoyancy-driven floating process of larger Microcystis colonies, neglecting other potential mechanisms. To study the non-buoyancy-driven rapid flotation of Microcystis, we here investigate the floating processes of two strains of single-cell species (Microcystis aeruginosa and Microcystis wesenbergii), which are typically buoyant, under light conditions (150 μmol photons s-1 m-2). Our results showed that M. wesenbergii exhibited fast upward migration and formed surface scum within 4 hours, while M. aeruginosa did not form visible scum throughout the experiments. To further explore the underlying mechanism of these processes, we compared the dissolved oxygen (DO), extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content, and colony size of Microcystis in different treatments. We found supersaturated DO and the formation of micro-bubbles (50-200 µm in diameter) in M. wesenbergii treatments. M. aeruginosa produces bubbles in small quantities and small sizes. Additionally, M. wesenbergii produced more EPS and tended to aggregate into larger colonies. M. wesenbergii had much more derived-soluble extracellular proteins and polysaccharides compared to M. aeruginosa. At the same time, M. wesenbergii contains abundant functional groups, which was beneficial to the formation of agglomerates. The surface scum observed in M. wesenbergii is likely due to micro-bubbles attaching to the surface of cell aggregates or becoming trapped within the colony. Our study reveals a species-specific mechanism for the rapid floatation of Microcystis, providing novel insights into surface scum formation as well as succession of cyanobacterial species.

Rectifying disorder of extracellular matrix to suppress urethral stricture by protein nanofilm-controlled drug delivery from urinary catheter

Urethral stricture secondary to urethral injury, afflicting both patients and urologists, is initiated by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix in the submucosal and periurethral tissues. Although various anti-fibrotic drugs have been applied to urethral stricture by irrigation or submucosal injection, their clinical feasibility and effectiveness are limited. Here, to target the pathological state of the extracellular matrix, we design a protein-based nanofilm-controlled drug delivery system and assemble it on the catheter. This approach, which integrates excellent anti-biofilm properties with stable and controlled drug delivery for tens of days in one step, ensures optimal efficacy and negligible side effects while preventing biofilm-related infections. In a rabbit model of urethral injury, the anti-fibrotic catheter maintains extracellular matrix homeostasis by reducing fibroblast-derived collagen production and enhancing metalloproteinase 1-induced collagen degradation, resulting in a greater improvement in lumen stenosis than other topical therapies for urethral stricture prevention. Such facilely fabricated biocompatible coating with antibacterial contamination and sustained-drug-release functionality could not only benefit populations at high risk of urethral stricture but also serve as an advanced paradigm for a range of biomedical applications.

Novel biocompatible and sensitive visual sensor based on aggregation-induced emission for on-site detection of radioactive uranium in water and live cell imaging

In consideration of the severe hazards of radioactive uranium pollution, the rapid assessment of uranium in field and in vivo are urgently needed. In this work a novel biocompatible and sensitive visual fluorescent sensor based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was designed for onsite detection of UO₂²⁺ in complex environmental samples, including wastewater from Uranium Plant, river water and living cell. The AIE-active sensor (named as TPA-SP) was prepared with a "bottom-up" strategy by introducing a trianiline group (TPA) with a single-bond rotatable helix structure into the salicylaldehyde Schiff-base molecule. The photophysical properties, cytotoxicity test, recognition mechanism and the analytical performance for the detection of UO₂²⁺ in actual water samples and cell imaging were systematically investigated. TPA-SP exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity toward UO₂²⁺ as well as outstanding anti-interference ability against large equivalent of different ions in a wide effective pH range. A good linear relationship in the UO₂²⁺ concentration range of 0.05-1 μM was obtained with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 39.4 nM (9.38 ppb) for uranium detection. The prepared visual sensor showed great potential for fast risk assessment of uranium pollution in environmental systems. In addition, our results also indicated that the TPA-SP exhibited very low cytotoxicity in cells and demonstrated great potential for uranium detection in vivo.

Nanoarchitectonics of RGO-Wrapped CNF/GO Aerogels with Controlled Pore Structures by PVA-Assisted Freeze-Casting Approach for Efficient Sound and Microwave Absorption

Acoustic absorption materials play an important role in eliminating the negative effects of noise. Herein, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-assisted freeze-casting was developed for controllably fabricating reduced graphene oxide wrapped carbon nanofiber (RGO@CNF)/graphene oxide composite aerogel. During the freeze-casting, PVA was used as an icing inhibitor to control the size of ice crystals. While the concentration of PVA increased from 0 to 15 mg ⋅ ml^-1 , the average pore size of the aerogel was reduced from 154 to 45 μm. Due to the modulation of the pore size and composition, the propagation path and friction loss for sound were optimized, especially at low frequency. For instance, the normalized sound absorption coefficient of RGO@CNF/GO-10 achieves 0.79 (250-6300 Hz). The sample also exhibits a desirable microwave absorbing property whose maximum reflection loss is -47.3 dB (9.44 GHz, d=3.0 mm). Prospectively, this synthetic strategy can be extended to develop other forms of elastic aerogel with a controlled pore size.

Formation mechanism of high-viscosity gelatinous egg white among "Fenghuang Egg": Phenomenon, structure, and substance composition

"Fenghuang Egg" is a special egg product incubated for 12 days by fertilized hen eggs. Its egg white contains high-viscosity and excellent thermal gel strength. A comparative study on the differences in gel properties, structure, and substance composition between fresh egg white (FEW) and "Fenghuang egg" gelatinous egg white (GEW) was carried out. Experimental results showed GEW had better apparent viscosity, as well as the hardness, cohesiveness and water holding capacity (WHC) of thermal gel; the content and size of aggregate structure increased significantly in GEW, and a fibrous dense network composed of numerous spherical nanoparticles connected in series was formed after heating. In addition, it also discovered that more water molecules in GEW existed in the form of bound water. A total of 41 proteins changed significantly in FEW and GEW, Mucin 6 might be the main reason for the enhanced viscosity of GEW, and OVA might be the dominant protein differentiating the thermal gel properties between FEW and GEW. This study revealed that the differences in gel properties and structures between FEW and GEW were closely related to the content of highly glycosylated globular proteins, laying a theoretical foundation for the application of high-viscosity egg whites.

Preparation and characterization of multi-network hydrogels based on sodium alginate/krill protein/polyacrylamide-Strength, shape memory, conductivity and biocompatibility

Sodium alginate/krill protein/polyacrylamide (SA/AKP/PAM) hydrogel with "covalent bond-ion complex-hydrogen bond" multi-network structure was prepared by covalent cross-linking and complexion ion crosslinking using SA, AKP, and acrylamide (AM) as raw materials. The effects of ion species (Fe³⁺, Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺, Ca²⁺, and Zn²⁺) on the structure, morphology, and properties of multi-network hydrogels were studied in detail. The results showed that the mechanical strength of ionic cross-linked hydrogels increased significantly. The compressive strength of Fe³⁺ cross-linked hydrogels was 5.56 MPa, 16.13 times that of non-ionic crosslinked hydrogels. The results of ionic conductivity measurements showed that hydrogels had significant ionic conductivity and were sensitive to external forces. Interestingly, the hydrogel can be used as a capacitive pen in mobile phone writing, painting and dialing numbers. Moreover, ionic cross-linked hydrogels had a unique three-dimensional porous structure with gradient distribution, excellent shape memory effect, and good biocompatibility. Fe³⁺, Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺, and Ca²⁺ cross-linked hydrogels were nontoxic and conducive to the adhesion and growth of Schwann cells. These excellent properties of ionic cross-linked SA/AKP/PAM hydrogels have broad applications prospects in flexible electronic devices, sensors, soft electronic skins, and tissue engineering.

Myofibrillar Protein Interacting with Trehalose Elevated the Quality of Frozen Meat

This work studied the interactions between trehalose/chitooligosaccharide (COS) and myofibrillar protein (MP), and the effect of such interactions on the quality of meat after freezing was also evaluated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that both trehalose and COS could enhance the content of hydrogen bonds of MP. Zeta potential measurement displayed trehalose/COS reduced the absolute value of the surface potential of MP. The results of Raman spectroscopy suggested that the hydrophobic residues of MP were more exposed after treatment with trehalose/COS. Thus, trehalose and COS could both interact with MP through non-covalent bonds. Subsequently, the evaluation of the effect of trehalose and COS on the physicochemical properties of frozen meat was conducted. Results showed that both trehalose and COS significantly reduced thawing loss of frozen meat, and sensory evaluation showed that trehalose had a better performance from the perspective of smell, texture, and overall consumer acceptance. In conclusion, trehalose/COS interacting with MP can reduce meat thawing loss, which might provide technical guidance in the quality control of frozen meat.

Rapid removal of trace haloacetic acids from drinking water by a continuous adsorption process using graphene oxide

Significant health risks are caused by trace levels of haloacetic acids (HAAs) in drinking water. We used graphene oxide (GO), a high-performance absorbent, to remove monochloroacetic acid (MCAA), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA). 31.6%, 27.1% and 30.2% of MCAA, DCAA and TCAA in drinking water could be rapidly removed within 2 min by the interaction of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between GO and HAAs. On the other hand, as a type of weak interaction, intermolecular hydrogen bonds are easy to fracture, which leads to the recovery of GO. The removal efficiency of MCAA, DCAA and TCAA monotonously decreased with increasing pH from 3 to 11. Temperature was not an important influence on the removal efficiency of HAAs, and only affected the interaction of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between GO and HAAs. A continuous adsorption process was used for further improving the removal efficiency of HAAs, and the concentration of total HAAs decreased from 436 to 52.5 μg L^-1 after five adsorption processes. The total contact time was just 2.25 min, which was faster than other reported adsorbents, and total HAAs could be decreased by 88%. The innovative process in this study provides an effective method for application of GO to rapidly remove HAAs in drinking water.

The Improvement of the Modified Starch—Glucomannan—Polyvinyl Alcohol Biothermoplastic Composite Characteristics With Polycaprolactone and Anhydride Maleic Acid

The purpose of this study was to determine the concentrations of polycaprolactone (PCL) and anhydride maleic acid (AMA) to produce a biothermoplastic composite (BtC) of modified cassava starch–glucomannan–polyvinyl alcohol (MSGPvA) that meets the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) and International Bioplastic Standards such as ISO 527/1B, PCL from the UK, and ASTM 5336 for PLA plastic from Japan. This study measured the tensile strength ratio and Young's modulus of MSGPvA BtC compared to commercial biothermoplastic (CBt), elongation at break, swelling, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and biodegradation time. In addition, the surface profile, functional group, crystallinity, and thermal stability were also observed, which were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. MSGPvA BtC with 20% PCL and 3.5% AMA was able to increase and improve tensile strength, elongation at break, Young's modulus, swelling, WVTR, and degradation time. MSGPvA BtC with 5% PCL and 0.5% AMA has a transverse surface profile that shows the presence of clear and wavy fibers and an elongated surface profile with indistinct waves, containing the OH functional group at wavenumbers 2,962.66 and 3,448.72 cm−1 and C=O at a wavenumber of 1,735.93 cm−1, and has a low crystallinity degree but relatively high thermal stability. All MSGPvA BtC characteristics with 5% PCL and 0.5% AMA have met the SNI and International Bioplastic Standards (ISO 527/1B, PCL from England, ASTM 5336 for PLA plastic from Japan), except for swelling characteristics. Thus, MSGPvA BtC with 5% PCL and 0.5% AMA has the potential to be used as food packaging material.

The impact of pH on mechanical properties, storage stability and digestion of alginate-based and soy protein isolate-stabilized emulsion gel beads with encapsulated lycopene

In alginate-based emulsion gels containing protein-coated droplets, pH can influence the gelation mechanism of alginate gels, and the interactions between alginate molecules and protein-coated droplets, and thus properties of emulsion gels. This study investigated the impact of pH 3-7 on the properties (e.g., surface structures of droplets, mechanical properties, storage stability, digestion behavior) of alginate gel beads containing soy protein isolate(SPI)-stabilized oil droplets. Emulsion droplets were SPI-coated droplets at pH 6-7 and alginate/SPI-coated droplets at pH 3-5. Emulsion droplet flocculation only occurred in emulsions at pH 7.0. Emulsion gel beads at pH 3.0 had lower mechanical strength, higher storage stability, faster release of encapsulated lycopene during in-vitro digestion, and higher bioaccesibility of lycopene after 2 h of intestinal digestion than those at pH 7.0 and 5.0. The findings of this study are crucial to emulsion gel beads with controlled release and improved storage stability of encapsulated compounds by changing the pH of emulsions.

Characteristics of Sodium Alginate/Antarctic Krill Protein Composite Fiber Based on Cellulose Nanocrystals Modification: Rheology, Hydrogen Bond, Crystallization, Strength, and Water-Resistance

The purpose of adding cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) into sodium alginate (SA) and Antarctic krill protein (AKP) system is to use the ionic cross-linking of SA and AKP and the dynamic hydrogen-bonding between them and CNCs to construct multiple cross-linking structures, to improve the water-resistance and strength of SA/AKP/CNCs composite fiber. Based on the structural viscosity index in rheological theory, the ratio of spinning solution and temperature were optimized by studying the structural viscosity index of the solution under different CNCs content and temperature, then the composite fiber was prepared by wet spinning. We found that when the content of CNCs is 0.8% and 1.2%, the temperature is 45 °C and 55 °C, the structural viscosity is relatively low. Under the optimal conditions, the intermolecular hydrogen bonds decrease with the increase of temperature. Some of the reduced hydrogen bonds convert into intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Some of them exist as free hydroxyl; increasing CNCs content increases intermolecular hydrogen bonds. With the increase of temperature, the crystallinity of composite fiber increases. The maximum crystallinity reaches 27%; the CNCs content increases from 0.8% to 1.2%, the breaking strength of composite fiber increases by 31%. The water resistance of composite fiber improves obviously, while the swelling rate is only 14%.

Effect of Trehalose on the Physicochemical Properties of Freeze-Dried Powder of Royal Jelly of Northeastern Black Bee

Trehalose is known for its effect of improving the stability of freeze-dried foods. In this work, vacuum freeze-drying (VFD) technology was employed to prepare northeast black bee royal jelly into lyophilized powder and a novel method mixing trehalose into royal jelly is successfully developed to enhance the free radical scavenging ability and the nutrition stability of royal jelly lyophilized powder. The effects of different trehalose content (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 wt.%) on the physicochemical properties of lyophilized royal jelly powder were studied. With systematic analysis, it was found that the incorporation of suitable trehalose content in lyophilized royal jelly powder can reduce the loss of the protein, total sugar, total flavone content during the VFD process and enhance the total phenolic antioxidant capacity, solubility, angle of repose, and bulk density of the royal jelly powder. Finally, lyophilized royal jelly with 0.5 wt.% trehalose is selected as the suitable addition content which exhibits the best radical scavenging ability as well as the lowest hygroscopicity. From the perspective of sensory evaluation, all royal jelly lyophilized powders with trehalose are acceptable.

Preparation of Electrospun Polyvinyl Alcohol/Nanocellulose Composite Film and Evaluation of Its Biomedical Performance

Using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and nanocellulose (NC) as raw materials, PVA/NC nanofiber membranes were prepared by electrospinning. The hydrogen bonding, crystalline properties and microscopic appearance of PVA/NC membranes with different NC contents were characterized. The mechanical properties, liquid absorption and cytotoxicity of the nanofiber membrane were evaluated. The results show that the free hydroxyl group of the PVA/NC nanofiber membranes have a maximum value of 9% at a mass fraction of 6% NC. The crystallinity of the PVA/NC nanofiber membranes and the average diameter of the nanofibers decreased and then increased as the NC content increased, with a minimum value of 38.23% and 272.03 nm, respectively, at 6% NC content. At this time, the contact angle was the smallest. The maximum strength of the PVA/NC nanofiber membranes is 75.8% higher than that of the PVA membrane at 2% NC content. With increasing NC content, the absorption of water, PBS sustained-release suspensions and artificial blood by PVA/NC nanofiber membranes increases. Cytotoxicity tests have shown that PVA/NC nanofiber membranes are non-toxic, have good cytocompatibility and are expected to be used in the field of medical dressings.

Bioflocculation effect of Glyptotendipes tokunagai on different Microcystis species: Interactions between secreted silk and extracellular polymeric substances

Cyanobacterial blooms are a major problem in many lakes and can negatively impact public health and ecosystem services. The bioflocculation technique has proven to be a cost-effective, environmentally friendly technique with no secondary pollution to harvest multiple microalgae; however, few studies have focused on its effect on and potential for controlling cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lakes. In this study, the bioflocculation efficiencies of different Microcystis species under Glyptotendipes tokunagai (Diptera, Chironomidae) stress conditions and the interactions between secreted silk from Chironomid larvae and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from Microcystis were compared. The results indicated that G. tokunagai presented better bioflocculation efficiency on M. wesenbergii than on M. aeruginosa. The formation of "Large Algal Aggregate" flocs was promoted by the derived-soluble extracellular polymeric substances (i.e., proteins and polysaccharides, sEPS) from M. wesenbergii and silk from G. tokunagai. Both M. wesenbergii and midge silk had abundant functional groups, which was beneficial to the formation of the large aggregate. G. tokunagai secreted a large amount of silk to bridge with the sEPS of M. wesenbergii, forming a network structure via interaction between filamentous substance (i.e., complex of sEPS and silk) that plays an important role in the aggregation of Microcystis and the removal of the Microcystis biomass in the water column. The findings provide further insights that will benefit the existing efforts of combating Microcystis blooms in the water column via bioflocculation and will provide a new sustainable approach for inhibiting early bloom formation from the perspective of its provenance in the sediment-water interface.

Understanding the dependence of start-up and stability of aerobic granule on pH from the perspective of adhesion behavior and properties of extracellular polymeric substances

The start-up and stability of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) could be greatly influenced by pH variation. The inner core in the aerobic granules provided adhesion sites for microbes by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) adhesion, the adhesion behavior of EPS and the properties of adhesion layer formed by EPS with pH changes might directly affect the start-up efficiency and stability of AGS. In this study, the adhesion behavior of EPS at an inorganic surface and the viscoelasticity of the EPS adhesion layer with pH variation was investigated by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, and the response of functional groups and intermolecular interactions to pH changes was explored. Based on the interaction energy calculation, it was found that the charge repulsion between substances dominated the interactions between EPS components and between EPS and the surface by regulating protonation and deprotonation of the functional groups of EPS with pH variation. A lower energy barrier between EPS and the surface at a lower pH value could facilitate the adhesion of EPS at the surface, which favored the rapid start-up of AGS. Moreover, the high ratio of both α-helix and intermolecular hydrogen bond at an acid condition could enhance the gel-strength of EPS, which provide AGS the resistance ability against external disturbance. This study revealed the mechanism of the interactions in EPS adhesion process with the variation of pH and provided useful information for a better understanding of the stability of the AGS.

Elucidation of Mechanical, Physical, Chemical and Thermal Properties of Microbial Composite Films by Integrating Sodium Alginate with Bacillus subtilis sp

Materials are the foundation in human development for improving human standards of life. This research aimed to develop microbial composite films by integrating sodium alginate with Bacillus subtilis. Sodium alginate film was fabricated as control. The microbial composite films were fabricated by integrating 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 g of Bacillus subtilis into the sodium alginate. Evaluations were performed on the mechanical, physical, chemical and thermal properties of the films. It was found that films reinforced with Bacillus subtilis significantly improved all the mentioned properties. Results show that 0.5 g microbial composite films had the highest tensile strength, breaking strain and toughness, which were 0.858 MPa, 87.406% and 0.045 MJ/m³, respectively. The thickness of the film was 1.057 mm. White light opacity, black light opacity and brightness values were 13.65%, 40.55% and 8.19%, respectively. It also had the highest conductivity, which was 37 mV, while its water absorption ability was 300.93%. Furthermore, it had a higher melting point of 218.94 °C and higher decomposition temperature of 252.69 °C. SEM also showed that it had filled cross-sectional structure and smoother surface compared to the sodium alginate film. Additionally, FTIR showed that 0.5 g microbial composite films possessed more functional groups at 800 and 662 cm⁻¹ wavenumbers that referred to C–C, C–OH, C–H ring and side group vibrations and C–OH out-of-plane bending, respectively, which contributed to the stronger bonds in the microbial composite film. Initial conclusions depict the potential of Bacillus subtilis to be used as reinforcing material in the development of microbial composite films, which also have the prospect to be used in electronic applications. This is due to the conductivity of the films increasing as Bacillus subtilis cell mass increases.

Bioresponsive supramolecular hydrogels for hemostasis, infection control and accelerated dermal wound healing

Injectable, drug-releasing hydrogel scaffolds with multifunctional properties including hemostasis and anti-bacterial activity are essential for successful wound healing; however, designing ideal materials is still challenging. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of a biodegradable, temperature-pH dual responsive supramolecular hydrogel (SHG) scaffold based on sodium alginate/poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) (AG/PVCL) through free radical polymerization and the subsequent chemical and ionic cross-linking. A natural therapeutic molecule, tannic acid (TA)-incorporated SHG (AG/PVCL-TA), was also fabricated and its hemostatic and wound healing efficiency were studied. In the AG/PVCL-TA system, TA acts as a therapeutic molecule and also substitutes as an effective gelation binder. Notably, the polyphenol-arm structure and diverse bonding abilities of TA can hold polymer chains through multiple bonding and co-ordinate cross-linking, which were vital in the formation of the mechanically robust AG/PVCL-TA. The SHG formation was successfully balanced by varying the composition of SA, VCL, TA and cross-linkers. The AG/PVCL-TA scaffold was capable of releasing a therapeutic dose of TA in a sustained manner under physiological temperature-pH conditions. AG/PVCL-TA displayed excellent free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and cell proliferation activity towards the 3T3 fibroblast cell line. The wound healing performance of AG/PVCL-TA was further confirmed in skin excision wound models, which demonstrated the potential application of AG/PVCL-TA for skin regeneration and rapid wound healing.

Molecular forces governing protein-protein interaction: Structure-function relationship of complexes protein in the food industry

The application of protein-protein interaction (PPI) has been widely used in various industries, such as food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical. A deeper understanding of PPI is needed, and the molecular forces governing proteins and their interaction must be explained. The design of new structures with improved functional properties, e.g., solubility, emulsion, and gelation, has been fueled by the development of structural and colloidal building blocks. In this review, the molecular forces of protein structures are discussed, followed by the relationship between molecular force and structure, ways of a bind of proteins together in solution or at the interface, and functional properties. A more detailed look is thus taken at the relationship between the various influencing factors on molecular forces involved in PPI. These factors include protein properties, such as types, concentration, and mixing ratio, and solvent conditions, such as ionic strength and pH. This review also summarizes methods tha1t are capable of identifying molecular forces in protein and PPI, as well as characterizing protein structure.

Investigation on hydrogen bonds and conformational changes in protein/polysaccharide/ceramic based tri-component system

The main attention of present work is to study the molecular level interactions in the interface of biocomposite to increase their applicability. A specific kind of molecular interaction namely, hydrogen bonds play a vital role in deciding composite property. In this study, we construct a tri-component system based on silk fibroin/sodium alginate/hydroxyapatite by varying protein and polysaccharide proportions using in-situ co-precipitation method. The Fourier Transfer Infrared (FTIR) prediction state that prepared composite exhibit inter-(OH⋯N, OH⋯O, OH⋯π) and intra-(OH⋯OH) molecular hydrogen bonds and their strength are varied in accordance with composition of composite. During composite preparation, conformational changes from the random coil to β-sheet structure through intermediate β-turns exist within the protein molecule that is confirmed by vibrational spectra. The crystallographic profile and morphology of HAP were greatly influenced by virtue of polymer matrix. Simulated body fluid (SBF) immersion study shows that biodegradation and swelling ratio are correlated with type of hydrogen bond and secondary structure of protein. Moreover, the in-vitro biomineralization, cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity of composite were analysed in detail.

Microencapsulated soil conditioner with a water-soluble core: improving soil nutrition of crop root

Traditional level of fertilisers was used by most farmers in China with the risks about resources wasting, environmental pollution together with soil structure deterioration. It is practicable to tackle the challenges about over-fertilisation and low efficiency with microencapsulated soil conditioner (MSC), which clads the water soluble core with natural polymer. Fulvic acid (FA) can be used as core material, because it possesses the characteristics of water-soluble, fertiliser maintenance and expedient monitoring. The morphology, structure, and properties of MSC were studied and compared. The particle size of MSC was ranged from 1.58 to 2.14 mm with a similar shape which was obtained by conventional measuring method due to their soft features. This was mainly attributed to the concentration of liquid paraffin and the interaction between shell materials and calcium chloride_. FTIR spectra showed that a peak appeared at 1372 cm^-1, and this was ascribed to the microcapsules crosslinked and solidified by calcium ions. Sustained release experiment revealed that the microcapsules owned better fertiliser-retaining and water-retaining performances, and FA may be released as long as 750 h. Biodegradation experiments revealed that an obvious pore structure was found on the surface of microspheres after 30 d of degradation, and this was consistent with the sustained release experiment. Pot experiment illustrated that the plants cured with the microcapsules showed significant growth trend and grew up to 9.2 cm with a maximum rate, and this revealed that MSC owned better performance of promoting the growth of crop root.

Green Technology Approach for Reinforcement of Calcium Chloride Cured Sodium Alginate Films by Isolated Bacteria from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)

The suitability of bacteria application as fillers to reinforce calcium chloride cured sodium alginate film was investigated through the determination of the physical, morphological and mechanical properties of composite films. There were six species of bacteria isolated from palm oil mill effluent sample. The bacteria sample selected for filler reinforcement has a sub-micron diameter of 0.83 ± 0.13 µm. The growth curve of selected bacteria revealed that four days of broth culture produced the maximum bacteria mass. The composite films were produced with reinforcement of 0.1 g, 0.2 g, 0.3 g and 0.4 g of bacteria respectively. Overall, the increment of bacteria mass resulted in the production of yellowish composite films with improved morphological, physical and mechanical properties. The results revealed that the composite films reinforced with 0.3 g and 0.4 g of bacteria appeared to have less curling on the surface of the film. The water absorption properties of the films were initially 140.74% and remained constant at an approximate of 200% after the reinforcement. The tensile strength properties showed a total increment of approximately 22.70% (from 36.10 ± 1.94 MPa to 44.29 ± 0.60 MPa). Based on the results, bacteria fillers were not able to enhance the elongation properties because only about 0.6% of overall increment was observed which was considered insignificant. It was concluded that the bacteria biomass has the potential to be used as fillers to reinforce calcium chloride cured sodium alginate film.

Employment of Alginate Floating In Situ Gel for Controlled Delivery of Celecoxib: Solubilization and Formulation Studies

Celecoxib (CXB) is a COX-2-selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to control pain and various inflammatory conditions. CXB has limited oral bioavailability and a slow dissociation rate due to its poor water solubility. In order to enhance the oral bioavailability of CXB and reduce the frequency of administration, the present study was aimed at enhancing the aqueous solubility of CXB by a cosolvency technique and then at formulating and evaluating a CXB in situ floating gelling system for sustained oral delivery. Three cosolvents, namely, PEG 600, propylene glycol, and glycerin, at different concentrations, were used to solubilize CXB. Particle size analysis was performed to confirm the solubility of CXB in the solutions. The floating in situ gel formulations were then prepared by the incorporation of the CXB solution into sodium alginate solutions (0.25, 0.5, and 1% w/v). Formulations, in sol form, were then in vitro characterized for their physical appearance, pH, and rheological behaviors, while formulations in gel form were evaluated for their floating behavior and in vitro drug release studies. FTIR spectroscopy was performed to examine drug-polymer interaction. The selected formula was evaluated biologically for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Results revealed that the less-polar solvent PEG 600 at 80% v/v had the highest solubilization potential, and it was used to optimize the in situ gel formulation. The candidate formula (F3) was found to have the highest sodium alginate concentration (1% w/v) and showed the optimum sustained release profile with the Higuchi model release kinetics. The results from the FTIR spectroscopy analysis showed noticeable drug-polymer molecular interaction. Moreover, F3 exhibited a significantly higher percentage of paw edema inhibition at 8 h compared with the reference drug (p < 0.05). Also, it showed a sustained duration of analgesia that persisted for the entire experimental time.

Effect of Coagulation Bath Temperature on Mechanical, Morphological, and Thermal Properties of Cellulose/Antarctic Krill Protein Composite Fibers

Cellulose (C) and Antarctic krill protein (AKP) were dissolved at low temperature, and then C/AKP composite fibers were prepared by wet spinning. In this paper, the effect of coagulation bath temperature on the properties of C/AKP composite fibers were studied by FT-IR, XRD, DSC, and other tests. The results showed that, when the temperature of the coagulation bath increased from 5 to 25 °C, the intermolecular hydrogen bond content of the C/AKP composite fibers increased from 28.20% to 31.33%. When the coagulation bath temperature is 15 °C, the breaking strength of the composite fibers is 1.64cN/dtex, which is 12% higher than that of the composite fibers at room temperature. At this temperature, the crystallinity of the composite fibers is improved, the thermal stability is slightly improved, and the surface morphology is smoother. Inspiringly, when zinc sulfate is added to the coagulation bath, the formation process of the fibers is milder. Moreover, the C/AKP composite fibers have excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

A sodium alginate/feather keratin composite fiber with skin-core structure as the carrier for sustained drug release

To alleviate the serious gastrointestinal side reaction of indomethacin (IDM), sodium alginate/feather keratin (SA/FK) fiber with skin-core structure was prepared via wet spinning as the carrier for sustained release of IDM. Fourier translation infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was adopted to investigate the reaction mechanism among SA, FK and IDM, and Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy was used to systematically evaluate the sustained release capacity of SA/FK fiber in three simulated fluids. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to observe the apparent morphology of SA/FK fiber. The results indicate that, release amount of IDM exhibits an increase trend along with time; the release amount of IDM reaches 80% after 12 h in colon fluid and small intestinal fluid, and is less than 20% in digestive fluid. Simultaneously, FK can effectively control the release of IDM, and with the increase of FK content, IDM release time of the carrier fiber extends.

Understanding the role of extracellular polymeric substances in the rheological properties of aerobic granular sludge

The gel-properties of aerobic granular sludge could sustain the mechanical strength and stability of granules during the operation of wastewater treatment. The contributing extracellular polymeric substances to the gel strength of aerobic granular sludge were verified from the perspective of rheological properties in this study. Moreover, the correlations between the molecular structure and gel properties of extracellular polymeric substances were established by analyzing rheological properties and spectrum results of extracellular polymeric substances extracted by various extraction methods. The results indicated that protein and polysaccharide were indispensable to maintain the cross-linking structure of extracellular polymeric substances. The gel strength of extracellular polymeric substances was positively correlated with the amount of α-helix of natural protein and intermolecular hydrogen bond between each component. The cation exchange resin method which retained the relatively higher ratio of α-helix of natural protein and intermolecular hydrogen bond could better preserve the gel properties of the original aerobic granular sludge. This study could provide a theoretical reference for the cultivation of aerobic granular sludge and the optimization of operating conditions of the reactor.

Preparation of calcium alginate/polyethylene glycol acrylate double network fiber with excellent properties by dynamic molding method

In order to greatly reduce the viscosity of sodium alginate (SA) gel solution and improve the properties of calcium alginate (CA) fiber, SA/polyethylene glycol acrylate (PEGDA) gel spinning solution with interpenetrating network structure was prepared by using one-pot method firstly. Then the solution was extruded continuously into the coagulation bath. CA/PEGDA composite fiber with double network was prepared by ionic crosslinking SA macromolecules with Ca²⁺ during the dynamic molding process of solidification, stretch and curl. Rheological results indicated that the spinning solution's apparent viscosity was 92.8% smaller than that of the pure SA solution at PEGDA content of 20 wt%. As the PEGDA content increased, the storage modulus G' and the loss modulus G" both decreased. FTIR results showed that PEGDA content had an obvious influence on hydrogen bond in CA/PEGDA system. The tensile strength of composite fiber reached maximum of 2.91cN/dtex at PEGDA of 10%.
