Thermal sensitivity and protein anti-adsorption of hydroxypropyl cellulose-g- poly(2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl phosphorylcholine)

Synthesis and characterization of temperature-sensitive microspheres based on acrylamide grafted hydroxypropyl cellulose and chitosan for the controlled release of amoxicillin trihydrate

This study deals with the preparation of temperature-sensitive chitosan/hydroxypropyl cellulose-graft-polyacrylamide (CS/HPC-g-PAAm) blend microspheres as a controlled drug release system. For this purpose, HPC-g-PAAm copolymers of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) with acrylamide (AAm) were synthesized using cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate as initiator. The HPC-g-PAAm copolymers were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) of the synthesized copolymers were determined. Temperature-sensitive blend microspheres of HPC-g-PAAm and chitosan were prepared by emulsion cross-linking method using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a cross-linker in the hydrochloric acid catalyst (HCl) and they were used to achieve controlled release of amoxicillin trihydrate (AMX), an antibiotic drug. The microspheres were characterized by DSC, X-ray diffraction (X-RD), and FTIR spectroscopy. In addition, surfaces of empty and drug-loaded microspheres were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of variables such as CS/HPC-g-PAAm ratio, drug/polymer ratio, amount of cross-linker, and reaction time of grafting on AMX release were investigated at three different pH environments (1.2, 6.8, 7.4) at 25 °C, 37 °C, and 50 °C. The release results showed that the microspheres had temperature sensitivity and the AMX release was slightly more controlled by especially increasing graft yield (%).

Improved antifouling properties of PVA hydrogel via an organic semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride catalyzed surface-initiated photo atom transfer radical polymerization

An innovative g-C₃N₄ catalyzed surface-initiated photo atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-photoATRP) has been developed to construct MEDSAH zwitterionic polymer brushes on PVA hydrogel surface. g-C₃N₄ catalyzed SI-photoATRP is temporal and spatial control. As a heterogeneous reaction system, it can solve the catalyst residues problem. After grafting with MEDSAH, surface chemical composition and morphology of PVA-g-pMEDSAH hydrogel confirmed that MEDSAH was successfully grafted onto PVA hydrogel. Thermal property of PVA-g-pMEDSAH hydrogel decreased and hydrophilicity increased. No statistically significant differences between PVA and PVA-g-pMEDSAH were observed on mechanical properties. Cytotoxicity in vitro of PVA-g-pMEDSAH hydrogel could be considered as no cytotoxicity for L929 and NDHF cells. The antifouling properties of PVA-g-pMEDSAH hydrogel were significantly improved due to the enhancement of the surface hydration and steric repulsion effects caused by pMEDSAH polymer brushes. In addition, g-C₃N₄ is easier to modify to enhance the photocatalyst property. Thus, the heterogeneous reaction system of g-C₃N₄ catalyzed SI-photoATRP has huge potential applied in biomaterials surface modification.

Performance analysis of grafted poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) on additively manufactured titanium substrate for hip implant applications

The incidence of total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been evidently growing over the last few decades. Surface modification, such as polymer grafting onto implant surfaces using poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC), has been gaining attention due to its excellent biocompatibility and high lubricity behaviour resulting in reducing surgical recurrence number and increasing implant lifetime. Investigating thermal stability and mechanical properties of the grafted polymer is, therefore, extremely important as these properties define the failure mechanism of implants. This study focuses on optimising monomer concentration to achieve the best physical, thermal and mechanical properties of the grafted additively manufactured titanium (Ti6Al4V) implants. Three different concentration of monomers, 0.4 M, 0.6 M and 0.8 M, were investigated, and grafted implants were characterised. The results from thermal analysis confirmed that the PMPC polymer is thermally stable for implant applications regardless of the monomer concentrations. A significant reduction in Young's modulus of polymer grafted samples (33.2-42.9%), in comparison with untreated Ti6Al4V samples and consequent improvement of wear resistance and elasticity behaviour, proved the potentiality of polymer films for implant applications. In summary, polymer grafted implant prepared with 0.6 M monomer concentration showed the optimal thermal, physical and wear resistance properties.
