Embedment of silver into temperature- and pH-responsive microgel for the development of smart textiles with simultaneous moisture management and controlled antimicrobial activities

Conception and evaluation of a washable multimodal smart textile

Smart textiles can support people with specific needs and diseases, such as diabetes or heart disease. Currently there are efforts to combine continuous mobile monitoring with other health-related conditions. On this basis, algorithms could be developed that can be used to detect unusual or critical conditions. A study was to investigate whether a previously developed washable Multi-Modal Smart Textile (MMST), based on inexpensive materials, would provide valid and reliable results with regard to the vital parameters of pulse, temperature and mobility. The measurement of the vital parameters was carried out with the developed prototype MMST as well as with validated devices. All electronics including the rechargeable NiMH has been washed more than 30 times with different methods and it remained fully functional. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for pulse (temperature) measurement ranged between 0.036 and 0.232 (0.077 and 0.817) depending on the activity of the tested individuals (standing, sitting, lying down, moving). Cohen’s Kappa for the detection of the body position was 0.765. For the parameter of pulse, the results indicated an insufficient derivation for both validity and reliability. Due to flaws in the methodology applied, the validly and reliably for the parameter of temperature could not be determined. Valid and reliable results were obtained for the parameter mobility/change of position. If the MMST (after modification of the prototype) achieves reliable results, there are many advantages for people giving and receiving care on a budget price, even in threatening emergency situations.

Novel Green In Situ Synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles on Cotton Using Pomegranate Peel Extract

This work presents the novel and entirely green in situ synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) on cotton fabric. Pomegranate peel extract was used as a reducing agent and wood ash extract was used as an alkali source for the formation of ZnO-NP from zinc acetate. Four different synthesis methods, which varied in drying between immersion of fabric in the active solutions for synthesis and the use of padding and ultrasonication, were investigated to evaluate the most suitable one to achieve excellent ultraviolet (UV) protective properties of the functionalized textile. For comparison, the cotton fabrics were also functionalized with each active solution separately or in a combination of two (i.e., Zn-acetate and plant extract). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirm the successful formation of ZnO-NP on cotton. Among the synthesis methods, the method that included continuous drying of the samples between immersion in the active solutions for synthesis (Method 4) was found to be the most suitable to deliver uniformly impregnated cotton fibers with numerous small ZnO wurtzite structured crystals and excellent UV protection, with a UV protection factor of 154.0. This research presents an example of a green circular economy where a bio-waste material can be used to produce ZnO-NP directly on cotton at low temperatures and short treatment times without the addition of chemicals and enables the production of cellulosic fabrics with excellent UV protection.

Preparation of polyacrylonitrile-based fibres with chelated Ag ions for antibacterial applications

The need for an excellent antibacterial material that is sufficiently powerful to never develop bacterial resistance is urgent. In this study, a series of novel polyacrylonitrile-based fibres with chelated Ag ions (referred to as Ag-SH-PANF) were prepared by a two-step chemical modification process: grafting and chelating. The properties of the as-prepared Ag-SH-PANF were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The antibacterial activities of Ag-SH-PANF were examined against pathogenic bacteria, and an antibacterial mechanism was explicated based on the release of Ag ions from the fibres' surfaces. The results showed that, although chelation occurred between the Ag ions and the grafted amino, sulfhydryl and disulfide groups, Ag-SH-PANF retained its fine microstructure and thermal stability. Moreover, Ag-SH-PANF displayed excellent antibacterial ability against pathogenic bacteria as well as good washing durability. In terms of the antibacterial mechanism, Ag ions are the main bactericidal agents in the role of catalysts and are not consumed in the antibacterial process. Nonetheless, a relatively higher concentration of Ag ions can accelerate the bactericidal process.

Insight into light-driven antibacterial cotton fabrics decorated by in situ growth strategy

Development of ease-fabricated and effectively self-disinfecting textile materials for antimicrobial and infection prevention has been urgently desired by both consumers and industry. However, some nonresponsive antibacterial agents finished fabrics may be harmful to human. To address this issue, we developed a facile finishing method to endow woven cotton fabrics (WCF) with light-driven antibacterial property. Here in, porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (PCN-224) were in situ synthesized on WCF (termed PCN-224/WCF) and PCN-224/WCF was proven to be used for antibacterial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI). aPDI studies indicated no difference in bacterial inactivation, the inactivation was 99.9999% of Gram-negative Escherichia coli 8099 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa CMCC (B) 10104 as well as Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC-6538 and Bacillus subtilis CMCC (B) 63501 under visible light illumination (500 W, 15 cm vertical distance, λ ≥ 420 nm, 45 min). Cytotoxicity tests revealed PCN-224/WCF had low biological toxicity and good biocompatibility. Mechanism study revealed that singlet oxygen (¹O₂) was produced by PCN-224/WCF and caused severe damage to bacteria which was observed from the SEM images. This study provided a facile guideline to functionalize cotton fabrics with responsive bactericidal property which showed great potential for new generation of textiles with practical applications.

Stereochemical Strategy Advances Microbially Antiadhesive Cotton Textile in Safeguarding Skin Flora

Microbial contamination on cotton textiles (CT) negatively affects people's health as well as the textile itself during use and storage. Using antimicrobial CT in a body-safe manner is currently still a challenge because it is difficult to balance killing microbes and protecting skin flora. Herein, a borneol-decorated CT (BDCT) through coupling of borneol 4-formylbenzoate molecules onto the amino-modified CT is reported. This BDCT shows strong and broad-spectrum microbially antiadhesive activities against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis), gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and fungi (Aspergillus niger, Mucor racemosus, and Candida albicans). Because of its unique stereochemical microbial antiadhesion mechanism, BDCT is harmless to skin flora. In addition, BDCT exhibits prominent durability of microbially antiadhesive capability by bearing 50 times of accelerated laundering. Therefore, this stereochemical BDCT strategy shows great potential for applications in the new generation of textiles, food packaging, and medical protection.

Switchable Dual-Function and Bioresponsive Materials to Control Bacterial Infections

The colonization of undesired bacteria on the surface of devices used in biomedical and clinical applications has become a persistent problem. Different types of single-function (cell resistance or bactericidal) bioresponsive materials have been developed to cope with this problem. Even though these materials meet the basic requirements of many biomedical and clinical applications, dual-function (cell resistance and biocidal) bioresponsive materials with superior design and function could be better suited for these applications. The past few years have witnessed the emergence of a new class of dual-function materials that can reversibly switch between cell-resistance and biocidal functions in response to external stimuli. These materials are finding increased applications in biomedical devices, tissue engineering, and drug-delivery systems. This review highlights the recent advances in design, structure, and fabrication of dual-function bioresponsive materials and discusses translational challenges and future prospects for research involving these materials.

Chitin/Chitosan: Versatile Ecological, Industrial, and Biomedical Applications

Chitin is a linear polysaccharide of N-acetylglucosamine, which is highly abundant in nature and mainly produced by marine crustaceans. Chitosan is obtained by hydrolytic deacetylation. Both polysaccharides are renewable resources, simply and cost-effectively extracted from waste material of fish industry, mainly crab and shrimp shells. Research over the past five decades has revealed that chitosan, in particular, possesses unique and useful characteristics such as chemical versatility, polyelectrolyte properties, gel- and film-forming ability, high adsorption capacity, antimicrobial and antioxidative properties, low toxicity, and biocompatibility and biodegradability features. A plethora of chemical chitosan derivatives have been synthesized yielding improved materials with suggested or effective applications in water treatment, biosensor engineering, agriculture, food processing and storage, textile additives, cosmetics fabrication, and in veterinary and human medicine. The number of studies in this research field has exploded particularly during the last two decades. Here, we review recent advances in utilizing chitosan and chitosan derivatives in different technical, agricultural, and biomedical fields.

Bioengineering of Functional Nanosilver Nanogels for Smart Healthcare Systems

Functional designing of nanogels has become an attractive domain of biomedical engineering to develop bioactive materials with innovative features for the human healthcare system. Nanosilver has attracted enormous attention due to its wide antimicrobial spectrum and ability to kill almost all types of bacteria in its vicinity. However, the most crucial challenge for bioscientists is the lack of binding ability of nanosilver with the material surfaces that allow nanosilver to leach out to the surrounding tissue and exert toxicity while the biomaterial is in contact with the living system. Designing nanosilver within a nanogel confinement offers enormous possibilities to develop functional bioactive nanoparticles that may be bonded to any biomaterial surface via the nanogel functionality. This approach requires the proper combination of material science with nanotechnology and biotechnology to innovate interesting domain of functional nanogels with unique features. This work aims at providing a critical review on the current progress, approaches, and vision in designing nanosilver-entrapped nanogel particles with diverse functionality, and their bioactivity against microorganisms for human healthcare devices.

Biomedical Applications of Silver Nanoparticles: An Up-to-Date Overview

During the past few years, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) became one of the most investigated and explored nanotechnology-derived nanostructures, given the fact that nanosilver-based materials proved to have interesting, challenging, and promising characteristics suitable for various biomedical applications. Among modern biomedical potential of AgNPs, tremendous interest is oriented toward the therapeutically enhanced personalized healthcare practice. AgNPs proved to have genuine features and impressive potential for the development of novel antimicrobial agents, drug-delivery formulations, detection and diagnosis platforms, biomaterial and medical device coatings, tissue restoration and regeneration materials, complex healthcare condition strategies, and performance-enhanced therapeutic alternatives. Given the impressive biomedical-related potential applications of AgNPs, impressive efforts were undertaken on understanding the intricate mechanisms of their biological interactions and possible toxic effects. Within this review, we focused on the latest data regarding the biomedical use of AgNP-based nanostructures, including aspects related to their potential toxicity, unique physiochemical properties, and biofunctional behaviors, discussing herein the intrinsic anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities of silver-based nanostructures.

Tailoring of temperature- and pH-responsive cotton fabric with antimicrobial activity: Effect of the concentration of a bio-barrier-forming agent

A stimuli-responsive cotton fabric was designed using temperature and pH-responsive poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (poly-NiPAAm) and chitosan (PNCS) microgel as a carrier of antimicrobially active 3-(trimethoxysilyl)-propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride (Si-QAC), which forms a bio-barrier on the fibre surface. The influence of Si-QAC on the moisture management and thermoregulation abilities of the PNCS microgel was investigated. Using a pad-dry cure method, Si-QAC was applied to a 100% cotton fabric model in concentrations ranging from 0.05-4% to determine the antimicrobial activity of Si-QAC against two types of bacteria, gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative Escherichia coli. Based on these results, three different concentrations of Si-QAC were selected (0.5, 2 and 4%) and tested with in situ embedment of the agent into PNCS microgel particles for further functionalization of the cotton fabric. The functional properties of the studied samples were assessed by measuring the moisture content, water vapour transmission rate, water uptake and antibacterial activity, and FT-IR and SEM were used to study the chemical and morphological properties of the fibres. The results show that regardless of the concentration, the presence of Si-QAC caused a reduction in the change in the volume of the PNCS microgel particles under conditions that would normally cause swelling. Accordingly, the moisture management and thermoregulation properties of the PNCS microgel were best preserved when the lowest Si-QAC concentration (0.5%) was used. Despite the low concentration, at the conditions required, enough Si-QAC was released from the microgel particles onto the surface of the fibres to form a bio-barrier with excellent antimicrobial activity.
