Responsive Regulation of Energy Transfer in Lanthanide-Doped Nanomaterials Dispersed in Chiral Nematic Structure

The responsive control of energy transfer (ET) plays a key role in the broad applications of lanthanide-doped nanomaterials. Photonic crystals (PCs) are excellent materials for ET regulation. Among the numerous materials that can be used to fabricate PCs, chiral nematic liquid crystals are highly attractive due to their good photoelectric responsiveness and biocompatibility. Here, the mechanisms of ET and the photonic effect of chiral nematic structures on ET are introduced; the regulation methods of chiral nematic structures and the resulting changes in ET of lanthanide-doped nanomaterials are highlighted; and the challenges and promising opportunities for ET in chiral nematic structures are discussed.

Loose Pre-Cross-Linking Mediating Cellulose Self-Assembly for 3D Printing Strong and Tough Biomimetic Scaffolds

The lack of an effective printable ink preparation method and the usual mechanically weak performance obstruct the functional 3D printing hydrogel exploitation and application. Herein, we propose a gentle pre-cross-linking strategy to enable a loosely cross-linked cellulose network for simultaneously achieving favorable printability and a strong hydrogel network via mediating the cellulose self-assembly. A small amount of epichlorohydrin is applied to (i) slightly pre-cross-link the cellulose chains for forming the percolating network to regulate the rheological properties and (ii) form the loosely cross-linked points to mediate the cellulose chains' self-assembly for achieving superior mechanical properties. The fabrication of the complex 3D structures verifies the design flexibility. The printed cellulose hydrogels exhibit a biomimetic nanofibrous topology, remarkable tensile and compressive strength (5.22 and 11.80 MPa), as well as toughness (1.81 and 2.16 MJ/m³). As a demonstration, a bilayer scaffold (mimicking the osteochondral structure) consisting of a top pristine cellulose and a bottom cellulose/bioactive glass hydrogel is printed and exhibits superior osteochondral defect repair performance, showing a potential in tissue engineering. We anticipate that our loose pre-cross-linking 3D printing ink preparation concept can inspire the development of other polymeric inks and strong 3D printing functional hydrogels, eventually spreading the applications in diverse fields.

A Review on the Design and Hydration Properties of Natural Polymer-Based Hydrogels

Hydrogels are hydrophilic 3D networks that are able to ingest large amounts of water or biological fluids, and are potential candidates for biosensors, drug delivery vectors, energy harvester devices, and carriers or matrices for cells in tissue engineering. Natural polymers, e.g., cellulose, chitosan and starch, have excellent properties that afford fabrication of advanced hydrogel materials for biomedical applications: biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, hydrophilicity, thermal and chemical stability, and the high capacity for swelling induced by facile synthetic modification, among other physicochemical properties. Hydrogels require variable time to reach an equilibrium swelling due to the variable diffusion rates of water sorption, capillary action, and other modalities. In this study, the nature, transport kinetics, and the role of water in the formation and structural stability of various types of hydrogels comprised of natural polymers are reviewed. Since water is an integral part of hydrogels that constitute a substantive portion of its composition, there is a need to obtain an improved understanding of the role of hydration in the structure, degree of swelling and the mechanical stability of such biomaterial hydrogels. The capacity of the polymer chains to swell in an aqueous solvent can be expressed by the rubber elasticity theory and other thermodynamic contributions; whereas the rate of water diffusion can be driven either by concentration gradient or chemical potential. An overview of fabrication strategies for various types of hydrogels is presented as well as their responsiveness to external stimuli, along with their potential utility in diverse and novel applications. This review aims to shed light on the role of hydration to the structure and function of hydrogels. In turn, this review will further contribute to the development of advanced materials, such as "injectable hydrogels" and super-adsorbents for applications in the field of environmental science and biomedicine.

Facile preparation of biomass lignin-based hydroxyethyl cellulose super-absorbent hydrogel for dye pollutant removal

The severe preparation process, poor swelling properties and mechanical properties of traditional cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogels heavily limited their practical applications. To solve these issues, we use long-chain hydroxyethyl celluloses (HECs) as framework backbones, short-chain PVAs as branched chains, lignin molecules as extended crosslinkers and epichlorohydrin molecules as crosslinkers to prepare the lignin-based hydroxyethyl cellulose-PVA (LCP) super-absorbent hydrogels in the alkaline aqueous solution under mild reaction conditions, demonstrating high swelling ratio of up to 1220 g/g. The LCP hydrogels could take up large amounts of positively charged dyes rhodamine 6G, crystal violet and methylene blue with uptakes of 153, 184 and 196 mg/g, respectively. The LCP super-absorbent hydrogels also present excellent water retention, biodegradability and excellent swelling properties, which are very promising for applications in the fields of commercial diapers, soil water retention and seed cultivation in agriculture, and dye pollutant removal.
