In-situ formation of supramolecular aggregates between chitin nanofibers and silver nanoparticles

Yeast biomass ornamented macro-hierarchical chitin nanofiber aerogel for enhanced adsorption of cadmium(II) ions

There is an urgent need to develop sustainable, renewable, and environment-friendly adsorbents to rectify heavy metals from water. In the current study, a green hybrid aerogel was prepared by immobilizing yeast on chitin nanofibers in the presence of a chitosan interacting substrate. A cryo-freezing technique was employed to construct a 3D honeycomb architecture comprising the hybrid aerogel with excellent reversible compressibility and abundant water transportation pathways for the accelerated diffusion of Cadmium(II) (Cd(II)) solution. This 3D hybrid aerogel structure offered copious binding sites to accelerate the Cd(II) adsorption. Moreover, the addition of yeast biomass amplified the adsorption capacity and reversible wet compression of hybrid aerogel. The monolayer chemisorption mechanism explored by Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 127.5 mg/g. The hybrid aerogel demonstrated higher compatibility for Cd(II) ions as compared to the other coexisted ions in wastewater and manifested a better regeneration potential following four consecutive sorption-desorption cycles. Complexation, electrostatic attraction, ion-exchange and pore entrapment were perhaps major mechanisms involved in the removal of Cd(II) revealed by XPS and FT-IR. This study unveiled a novel avenue for efficient green-synthesized hybrid aerogel that may be sustainably used as an excellent purifying agent for Cd(II) removal from wastewater.

Tuning liquid aggregation of zwitterionic chitin nanocrystals by graphene oxide planar catchers via electrostatic regulation

As important structural units, biomass nanomaterials have exhibited great potentials to construct high-performance macroscopic materials for broad applications by liquid assembly. However, the liquid aggregation of nanomaterials was less investigated. Here, we demonstrate that the one-dimensional (1D) zwitterionic chitin nanocrystals (ZChNCs) can be reversibly captured and released by two-dimensional (2D) planar catchers of graphene oxide (GO) sheets. The dominant electrostatic regulation strategy by pH variation drives that there are three reversible changes for the liquid aggregation of ZChNCs and GO, which were the isolated dispersion state (pH > 7), homogeneous hybridization state (7 ≥ pH ≥ 5), and partially stacked hybridization state (pH < 5), respectively. We found there are no sedimentation during the change of liquid aggregation with the higher absolute Zeta potentials (almost>30 mV). Moreover, the ZChNCs-GO nanohybrids have reached a maximum Zeta potential up to -80 mV, which can be explained by the ionization of excess carboxyl groups on the surface of ZChNCs. Besides, the electrostatic regulation endows the nanohybrids with rheological behavior, which is beneficial to the macro assembly of liquid nanomaterials. This work provides a new class of hybrid colloidal nanomaterials, opens the structural design dimension of macro assembly and holds great potentials in high-performance biodegradable material.

Viscoelastic and Properties of Amphiphilic Chitin in Plasticised Polylactic Acid/Starch Biocomposite

The enhancement of the PLA thermomechanical properties is significant due to its suitability as a replacement for primary synthetic polymer use in diverse industrial production. The amphiphilic chitin was used as a compatibilizer in PLA/starch biocomposite. The properties of plasticised polylactic acid blended with starch, and amphiphilic chitin was studied for enhanced thermomechanical and viscoelastic properties. Chitin was modified using acetylated substitution reaction and blended with plasticised PLA/starch biocomposite. The biocomposite was prepared with combined compression and melt extrusion techniques. The biocomposite’s thermomechanical, thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties were studied using dynamic mechanical analysis, TGA-DSC, tensile test, and scanning electron microscopy. The storage and loss modulus were significantly enhanced with increased amphiphilic chitin content. Similarly, the single peak of tan delta showed good miscibility of the polymeric blend. Additionally, the modulus increases with frequency change from 1 Hz to 10 Hz. The thermal stability of the biocomposite was observed to be lower than the neat PLA. The tensile properties of the biocomposite increased significantly more than the neat PLA, with P4S4C having the highest tensile strength and modulus of 87 MPa and 7600 MPa. The SEM images show good miscibility with no significant void in the fractured surface. The viscoelastic properties of PLA were enhanced considerably with plasticizer and amphiphilic chitin with improved biodegradability. The properties of the biocomposite can be adapted for various industrial applications.

Functional miscibility and thermomechanical properties enhancement of substituted phthalic acetylated modified chitin filler in biopolymer composite

The miscibility between hydrophobic and hydrophilic biopolymers has been of significant challenge. This study used a novel simplified chitin modification method to produce phthalic chitin using phthalic anhydride in a substitution reaction. The FT-IR functional group analysis was used to confirm the substitution reaction. The modified chitin was used as compatibilizer in polylactic acid (PLA)/starch biocomposite to enhance its properties. The biocomposite was prepared using melt extrusion and compression moulding technique. The biocomposite's morphological, thermomechanical and water absorption properties were characterized using scanning electron microscope, tensile test, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thickness swelling and water absorption test. The FT-IR study shows a successful substitution reaction of the amine hydrogen ion present in the chitin as opposed to substituting the hydrogen ion in the hydroxide group. The tensile and impact properties of biocomposite incorporated with modified chitin showed better results compared with other samples. The SEM images showed uniform miscibility of the modified biocomposite. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed improved modulus value with the incorporation of modified chitin. The thermal properties showed improved thermal stability of the modified biocomposite. Furthermore, the percentage of water absorbed by biocomposite with modified chitin is reduced compared with the PLA/starch biocomposite. The produced biodegradable ternary blend can be used as a substitute for plastics in industrial applications.

Chitin Nanofibril-Nanolignin Complexes as Carriers of Functional Molecules for Skin Contact Applications

Chitin nanofibrils (CN) and nanolignin (NL) were used to embed active molecules, such as vitamin E, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, lutein, nicotinamide and glycyrrhetinic acid (derived from licorice), in the design of antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nanostructured chitin nanofibrils–nanolignin (CN-NL) complexes for skin contact products, thus forming CN-NL/M complexes, where M indicates the embedded functional molecule. Nano-silver was also embedded in CN-NL complexes or on chitin nanofibrils to exploit its well-known antimicrobial activity. A powdery product suitable for application was finally obtained by spray-drying the complexes co-formulated with poly(ethylene glycol). The structure and morphology of the complexes was studied using infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy, while their thermal stability was investigated via thermo-gravimetry. The latter provided criteria for evaluating the suitability of the obtained complexes for subsequent demanding industrial processing, such as, for instance, incorporation into bio-based thermoplastic polymers through conventional melt extrusion. In vitro tests were carried out at different concentrations to assess skin compatibility. The obtained results provided a physical–chemical, morphological and cytocompatibility knowledge platform for the correct selection and further development of such nanomaterials, allowing them to be applied in different products. In particular, chitin nanofibrils and the CN-NL complex containing glycyrrhetinic acid can combine excellent thermal stability and skin compatibility to provide a nanostructured system potentially suitable for industrial applications.

N-methylene phosphonic acid chitosan/graphene sheets decorated with silver nanoparticles as green antimicrobial agents

A green and scalable approach for the preparation of few-layered graphene utilizing the biowaste of potato peels has been developed. The potato peels have been dried and carbonized to obtain a new graphite structure that has been exfoliated in N-methylene phosphonic acid chitosan (MPC). The exfoliation process assisted the formation of graphene sheets with a high size diameter and quality of 50% based on the weight of graphite structure. The graphene sheets were green decorated with silver nanoparticles using microwave power to obtain new nanocomposites. The mass ratio between the graphite and silver nitrate was optimized and observed to change the morphology and size diameter of silver nanoparticles. The as-prepared MPC structure, graphene, and silver decorated graphene nanocomposites were characterized using ¹HNMR, FTIR, XRD, UV/Vis spectrophotometer, SEM, and TEM besides tested as antimicrobial agents. The bacterial performance was also controlled by changing the number of AgNPs distributed on graphene sheets based on the mass ratios of graphite/AgNO₃. The inhibition diameter of silver decorated graphene was considerably increased to 24.8, and 20.1 mm as in the case of MPC-GRP-Ag30 composite compared to the pure graphene (11.2, 13.5 mm) for E. coli and S. aureus, consecutively proposing that the blade edge of graphene sheets can destroy the bacteria membrane and release silver cations promptly that are directed for the interaction with the cytoplasmic parts of the bacteria cell. Such findings offer green and biocompatible antibacterial agents based on the graphene derived from the biowaste products.

Isolation of Textile Waste Cellulose Nanofibrillated Fibre Reinforced in Polylactic Acid-Chitin Biodegradable Composite for Green Packaging Application

Textile waste cellulose nanofibrillated fibre has been reported with excellent strength reinforcement ability in other biopolymers. In this research cellulose nanofibrilated fibre (CNF) was isolated from the textile waste cotton fabrics with combined supercritical carbon dioxide and high-pressure homogenisation. The isolated CNF was used to enhance the polylactic acid/chitin (PLA/chitin) properties. The properties enhancement effect of the CNF was studied by characterising the PLA/chitin/CNF biocomposite for improved mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties. The tensile properties, impact strength, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and the PLA/chitin/CNF biocomposite wettability were studied. The result showed that the tensile strength, elongation, tensile modulus, and impact strength improved significantly with chitin and CNF compared with the neat PLA. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) morphological images showed uniform distribution and dispersion of the three polymers in each other, which corroborate the improvement in mechanical properties. The biocomposite’s water absorption increased more than the neat PLA, and the contact angle was reduced. The results of the ternary blend compared with PLA/chitin binary blend showed significant enhancement with CNF. This showed that the three polymers’ combination resulted in a better material property than the binary blend.

Graphene oxide-silver nanocomposites embedded nanofiber core-spun yarns for durable antibacterial textiles

Antibacterial textiles, which effectively inhibit bacterial breeding and resist pathogenic diseases, have wide applications in medicine, hygiene, and related fields. However, traditional antibacterial textiles exhibit significant limitations, such as poor antibacterial durability and contamination during preparation. In this work, nanofiber yarn loaded with a high-efficiency antibacterial agent was prepared using electrospinning technology. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was introduced as a solubilizing material to functionalize graphene oxide (GO) to form GO-PEI composites. A facile microwave heating method was used to synthesize GO-PEI and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). A multi-needle conjugated electrospinning device was used to blend the nanofibers with the GO-PEI-Ag composite to form a nanofiber core-spun yarn. The antibacterial agent was firmly fixed on the fiber to prevent easy removal. A uniformly oriented yarn structure and internal morphology were observed, and the antibacterial activity of the fabric was measured. The antibacterial rate of the fabric was over 99.99%for both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. After ten washes, the antibacterial rate remained above 99.99%. Thus, nanofiber fabric from electrospinning displays high antibacterial activity and excellent durability, thereby providing a feasible methodology for future production of antibacterial textiles.

Shape-stabilization of polyethylene glycol phase change materials with chitin nanofibers for applications in "smart" windows

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) based shape-stabilized phase change materials (PCMs) were successfully prepared using chitin nanofibers (CNFs). CNFs were isolated from crab shells and, resulted CNFs were several tenth of nanometers in diameter and had lengths ranging from several hundreds of nanometers to few micrometers. Introduction of CNFs in to PEG resulted shape-stabilized composites. Various PEG-CNF composites were fabricated and the resulted materials were encapsulated in to an optical device to obtain temperature dependent transparency. In the optimized formulation, the device remained opaque (∼3.5 %) below the melting point of the PEG-CNF composite and became gradually transparent as the temperature of the device increased ultimately stabilizing at a transmittance value of ∼88 %. CNF phase was seen to have an effect on the thermal properties of the PEG-CNF material. The work introduces a novel strategy for the shape stabilization of liquid-solid phase change materials unlocking potential for new PCM based devices.

In vitro evaluation of drug release and antibacterial activity of a silver-loaded wound dressing coated with a multilayer system

The goal of the study was to elaborate an antibacterial silver wound dressing covered by a protective coating that would prevent silver diffusion toward skin without losing its biocide properties. Therefore, non woven polyethyleneterephtalate (PET) textiles were pre-treated by two types of polysaccharides - chitosan and cyclodextrin - both crosslinked with citric acid by a pad/dry/cure process. Both types of resulting thermofixed textiles carrying the citrate crosslinks were then impregnated in silver solution followed by a thermal treatment and were finally coated by Layer-by-Layer (L-b-L) deposition of a polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) film consisting of anionic water-soluble poly-cyclodextrin and cationic chitosan. The influence of the process parameters was investigated in terms of silver adsorption capacity, PEM system build-up, silver kinetics of release and antibacterial activity. We demonstrate i) the utility of the intermediate thermal treatment step in the reduction of silver leakage in the polyelectrolyte solutions used in the L-b-L process, ii) that silver adsorption on the preliminary thermofixed layers did not affect the PEM system build-up, iii) the slowing down of silver release kinetic thanks to the PEM coating, iv) the preservation of the antibacterial activity despite the PEM coating.

Synthesis of Novel Chitin Derivatives Bearing Amino Groups and Evaluation of Their Antifungal Activity

Chemical modification is one of the most effective methods to improve the biological activity of chitin. In the current study, we modified C3-OH and C6-OH of chitin (CT) and successfully synthesized 6-amino-chitin (NCT) and 3,6-diamino-chitin (DNCT) through a series of chemical reactions. The structure of NCT and DNCT were characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, 13C NMR, XRD, and SEM. The inhibitory effects of CT, NCT, and DNCT against six kinds of phytopathogen (F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumerium, B. cinerea, C. lagenarium, P. asparagi, F. oxysporum f. niveum, and G. zeae) were evaluated using disk diffusion method in vitro. Meanwhile, carbendazim and amphotericin B were used as positive controls. Results revealed that 6-amino-chitin (NCT) and 3,6-diamino-chitin (DNCT) showed improved antifungal properties compared with pristine chitin. Moreover, DNCT exhibited the better antifungal property than NCT. Especially, while the inhibition zone diameters of NCT are ranged from 11.2 to 16.3 mm, DNCT are about 11.4⁻20.4 mm. These data demonstrated that the introduction of amino group into chitin derivatives could be key to increasing the antifungal activity of such compounds, and the greater the number of amino groups in the chitin derivatives, the better their antifungal activity was.
