Optimization of microwave-expanding pretreatment and microwave-assisted extraction of hemicellulose from bagasse cells with the exploration of the extracting mechanism

Hemicellulose is mainly distributed in the tightly packed S2 layer of the plant cell wall and the middle lamella. This rigid microstructure of wood and interactions among hemicellulose, lignin, and cellulose jointly restrict the separation and transformation of hemicellulose in the wood matrix. To address this issue, a method combined with microwave-expanding pretreatment (MEP) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) with a NaOH solution was carried out. We found that the MEP could effectively create new pathways for bagasse cells in mass transferring. More specifically, 195 % of the specific surface area (m2/g) with 193 % of the pores (>50 nm) increased after MEP; the SEM images also confirmed that the microstructure of bagasse was modified. MAE could considerably exfoliate hemicellulose from cellulose fiber and accelerate mass transfer. Additionally, we optimized MEP and MAE by using response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal parameters were 370 K, 3.7 min, 1081 W microwave power, and 9.9 wt% NH4HCO3 consumption for the MEP and 1100 W microwave power, 2.5 wt% NaOH concentration, 34.6 min reaction time for MAE, respectively. Moreover, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation suggests that NaOH could significantly lower the work needed to peel off the xylan chain from cellulose nanofibril.

Sustainable biohydrogen production from lignocellulosic biomass sources - metabolic pathways, production enhancement, and challenges

Hydrogen production from biological processes has been hailed as a promising strategy for generating sustainable energy. Fermentative hydrogen production processes such as dark and photofermentation are considered more sustainable and economical than other biological methods such as biophotolysis. However, these methods have constraints such as low hydrogen yield and conversion efficiency, so practical implementations still need to be made. The present review provides an assessment and feasibility of producing biohydrogen through dark and photofermentation techniques utilizing various lignocellulosic biomass wastes as substrates. Furthermore, this review includes information about the strategies to increase the productivity rate of biohydrogen in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner, like integration of dark and photofermentation techniques, pretreatment of biomass, genetic modification of microorganisms, and application of nanoadditives.

One-Step Treatment for Upgrading Bleached Bamboo Pulp to Dissolving Pulp High Solvency in Green Alkali/Urea Aqueous Solution

Bleached bamboo pulp, as a kind of natural cellulose, has received significant attention in the field of biomass materials due to its advantages of environmental protection and the abundance of raw materials. Low-temperature alkali/urea aqueous system is a green dissolution technology for cellulose, which has promising application prospects in the field of regenerated cellulose materials. However, bleached bamboo pulp, with high viscosity average molecular weight (Mη) and high crystallinity, is difficult to dissolve in an alkaline urea solvent system, restraining its practical application in the textile field. Herein, based on commercial bleached bamboo pulp with high Mη, a series of dissolvable bamboo pulps with suitable Mη was prepared using a method of adjusting the ratio of sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide in the pulping process. Due to the hydroxyl radicals being able to react with hydroxyls of cellulose, molecular chains are cut down. Moreover, several regenerated cellulose hydrogels and films were fabricated in an ethanol coagulation bath or a citric acid coagulation bath, and the relationship between the properties of the regenerated materials and the Mη of the bamboo cellulose was systematically studied. The results showed that hydrogel/film had good mechanical properties, as the Mη is 8.3 × 104 and the tensile strength of a regenerated film and the film have values up to 101 MPa and 3.19 MPa, respectively. In this contribution, a simple method of a one-step oxidation of hydroxyl radicals to prepare bamboo cellulose with diversified Mη is presented, providing an avenue for a preparation of dissolving pulp with different Mη in an alkali/urea dissolution system and expanding the practical applications of bamboo pulp in biomass-based materials, textiles, and biomedical materials.

A review on biological recycling in agricultural waste-based biohydrogen production: Recent developments

Hydrogen has become a research highlight by virtue of its clean energy production technology and high energy content. The technology of biohydrogen production from biological waste via fermentation has lower costs, provides environment-friendly methods regarding energy balance, and creates a pathway for sustainable utilization of massive agricultural waste. However, biohydrogen production is generally limited by lower productivity. Many studies have been conducted aimed at improving biohydrogen production efficiency. Hence, this review is intended to describe improving routes for biohydrogen production from agricultural waste and highlights recent advances in these approaches. In addition, the critical factors affecting biohydrogen production, including the pretreatment method, substrate resource, fermentation conditions, and bioreactor design, were also comprehensively discussed along with challenges and future prospects.

Reduce recalcitrance of cornstalk using post-hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater pretreatment

Hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) using an acidic catalyst is known to be effective for reducing lignocellulosic biomass recalcitrance. Post-hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater (PHW) from hydrothermal liquefaction of swine manure contains a large fraction of organic acids and thus was introduced to improve the HTP of cornstalk in this study. The response surface methodology was performed to optimize operating parameters of HTP for preserving structural polysaccharides while removing the barrier substances. A remarkable co-extraction of cell wall polymers was observed during PHW-catalyzed HTP at 172 °C for 88 min. The analysis of particle size, crystalline cellulose, the degree of polymerization (DP), mole number (MN) and SEM suggested that the co-extraction effect could distinctively alter lignocellulosic structures associated with recalcitrance and thus accelerate biomass saccharification. Additionally, the biodegradability of PHW was improved after HTP as a result of balanced nutrients and increased acids and sugars suitable for biogas production via anaerobic fermentation.

Quantitation of fast hydrolysis of cellulose catalyzed by its substituents for potential biomass conversion

This paper investigates the accelerated acidic hydrolysis of cellulose by its substituents for potential biomass conversion. Insufficient pretreatments and slow cellulose hydrolysis are major obstacles that impede efficient hydrolysis of cellulose. Substituted cellulose, such as dyed cotton, has large availability. It is susceptible to acidic hydrolysis and can be used for biomass conversion without any pretreatments. To understand the mechanism of accelerated hydrolysis of cellulose by its substituents is a prerequisite for cellulosic biomass conversion with high efficiency. Substituents with different charge properties were synthesized and their interactions with oxocarbenium ions were studied based on Density Functional Theory. Results indicate that hydrolysis rate is affected by field effect from substituents. Such field effect is dominated by amounts of negative charges on substituents and distance between negatively charged groups and oxocarbenium. Hydrolysis rate of dye-substituted cotton is higher than or comparable to that applied with other catalytic approaches.
